IT SOLD FOR WHAT? Some absolutely amazing prices were paid for classic cars at the recent Silverstone Auction held at the recent Classic car Show in the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham. Here are some examples. This Ford had an estimated value of between £80,000 and £100,000. With just 1066 miles on the clock this car was possibly the most original RS200 available on the market and is even fitted with its original Pirelli tyres. 1960 Aston Martin DB4 Series II – SOLD for £224,000 It was estimated to have a value of between £180,000 and £200,000. One of only 351 produced, it is little surprise that this stunning Jet Black example commanded an impressive figure. P
erhaps the best way to describe the B-Max, is a small MPV based on the Fiesta platform. It has its own body styling and this is where the Clever, Innovative design comes in. Unlike most cars with four passenger doors, it has no fixed B-pillar between the floor platform and the roof structure. The B-pillar is built into the rear edge of the front doors and is designed to interlock with anchorages in the side sills and the roof structure, when the doors are closed. The two rear doors are not hinged in the normal manner, but slide open parallel to the sides of the body. This is very useful in our normal far too narrow parking bays and with no fixed B-pillar when the coresponding front doors are open, it gives a clear, unobstructed access to the rear seats. This is particularly handy for parents trying to strap young children into, or release from, their safety seats. The B-Max’s higher build also makes it easier to get into, or exit from the car and when driving, especially in city traffic, gives a better view all around. The very raked windscreen pillars allow a large sloping windscreen to be fitted, which gives an excellent view forwards due to its large area. Although it is based on the Fiesta, the B-Max does have its own, unique exterior styling. Normal seating provides for the driver and four passengers. The rear seat backrest is divided 60/40 so it can be adapted to carry fewer passengers and awkward items of luggage if the need arises. The two outer rear seat positions are equipped with ISOfix fittings for child safety seats. Normal luggage space, between the floor and the underside of the rear shelf, is 0.318 cubic metres, but this can be expanded to 1.386 cubic metres when the rear seat backrest is completely folded and you load to the roof. The B-Max is thus a practical and very versatile family car. My only complaint on that score, is that the test car came without a spare wheel, which I consider to be wholly impractical, especially in a family car. Being a small car towing capacity is limited to braked trailers/caravans of up to 4 MotorMarket
750 kg, or unbraked trailers of up to 575 kg. I was not able to obtain a figure for roof loads, but based on the Fiesta, I expect it to be in the region of 50 kg. In these difficult financial times, performance is more about a frugal fuel consumption than overall speed, although an acceptable level of acceleration is still important. On that score the B-Max performs well. The test car was fitted with the new 1.5 litre diesel engine. By EU testing standards, it has an Urban cycle fuel consumption of 58 mpg (4.8 lt/100 km), improving to 74 mpg (3.8 lt/100 km) on the Extra urban cycle and averaging 68 mpg (4.1 lt/100 km) on the Combined cycle. This level of consumption gives exhaust emissions of 109 gm/km, placing the car comfortably in Irish road tax band A, the lowest price category. That is a plus point for any family motorist. On the velocity side, it is credited with a top speed of 157 kph (97 mph), which again is more than satisfactory for a compact, versatile family car. Acceleration from 0-100 kph takes 16.5 seconds, which while it is not in the boy-racer category, is still more than acceptable in daily city/suburban driving, which is the area of operations for most family cars today. From a driving point of view, the instruments and controls are well laid out. The leather covered steering wheel had a good feel and was adjustable for both reach and height. It had selectors on the left hand horizontal arm for the Bluetooth and contd. on page 4

associated mobile telephone operations. The curved instrument binnacle ahead of the steering wheel contained two large analogue instruments; the tachometer on the left and the speedometer on the right. Both had black backgrounds, white lettering and blue pointed needles. Between these two large instruments, there was digital panel at the top showing the outside air temperature and the trip distance recorder. At the bottom there was an analogue fuel level gauge.
Over in the centre console, there was a larger, rectangular digital panel that served a number of selected functions connected with the audio system and satellite navigation, parking sensors etc. The large panel below was the audio system control and selection, while the smaller panel below, ahead of the gearlever was the airconditioning selectors and controls. Below this, ahead of the gearlever, there was an open storage space, with a covered 12v socket. Controls for the four electric windows and heated, folding, exterior rear view mirrors, are in the driver’s door armrest. There is a selection of controls on the lower right hand side of the facia, below the air vent, for the headlamps and fog lamps. An interesting feature is the small mirror above the interior rear view mirror, for monitoring the passengers in the rear seat. It folds away out of sight when not needed. On the road, the B-Max rides and handles well. The steering is direct and positive with 2.7 turns of the wheel from lock to lock. The leather covered wheel itself has a fine, high quality feel about it. The brakes, using ventilated discs at the front and drums at the back, worked smoothly and progressively, which helps to inspire driver

or the 2013 model year, the Mazda MX5 has revised exterior styling and minor changes to the specification and equipment levels. Immediately noticeable is the new larger central grille with larger air inlets ahead of the front wheels. The new design is said to reduce aerodynamic drag around the fog lamps and over the front wheels. What cannot be seen is the pedestrian safety bonnet. When the possibility of a collision with a pedestrian is detected, the rear edge of the bonnet pops up to give an increased crumple zone between the underside of the bonnet and the top of the engine.

Buyers still have the choice of a 1.8 litre, 93 kW, 167 Nm engine, giving a top speed of 194 kph (121 mph), with 0-100 kph acceleration in 9.9 seconds, in both the Roadster and Roadster Coupe versions, or a 2.0 litre 118 kW, 188 Nm engine, offering a top speed of 212 kph (132 mph) with 0-100 kph in 7.6 seconds in the case
of the Roadster and 7.9 seconds with the Roadster Coupe. In both models fitted with the 1.8 litre engine, Combined cycle fuel consumption is 39 mpg (7.0 lt/100 km) with exhaust emissions of 167 gm/km. The 1.8 litre is connected to a five speed manual gearbox, while the 2.0 litre models come as standard with a six speed manual. With the 2.0 litre engine, there is also the option of a six speed Powershift automatic/manual transmission. Power and torque output remain the same, but 0-100 kph acceleration is reduced to 8.9 seconds, top speed drops to 194 kph (121 mph), with a Combined cycle fuel consumption of 35 mpg (8.0 lt/100 km) and exhaust emissions of 188 gm/km. The Powershift transmission is only available with the Roadster Coupe body style. One point eight litre models only come with the SE trim and equipment level. The 2.0 litre comes with Sport Tec and Sport Tec Nav levels. Depending on the specification level, buyers get satellite navigation, side airbags, climate control air-conditioning, auto dimming interior rear view mirror, alloy pedals, iPod and Bluetooth compatibility.
