Avis Ireland unveils winning Avis Art Car design A talented software engineer from Kildare was recently announced as the winner of the inaugural Avis Ireland Art Car design competition. Chris Quayle, originally from South Africa and now living in Celbridge will see his winning design adorn an Avis rental car that will be seen across the highroads and byroads of Ireland by thousands of people in the coming months.

Chris’s quirky design beat off stiff competition from hundreds of entries to the Avis Art Car, a major design competition that was launched in Ireland earlier this year.

The expert judging panel which included fashion stylist and journalist, Angela Scanlon and broadcaster, Anton Savage awarded Chris top place for his offbeat and original take on the competition theme ‘Freedom from Limitations’, a brand philosophy unique to Avis. His bold chain design has been reproduced as a vehicle ‘skin’ for the award-winning Nissan Juke, one of the more popular vehicles in the Avis fleet.

Mandy Young, Sales and Marketing Manager with Avis Ireland, commented: “Chris’s design really stood out among the judges because it’s very distinctive and eyecatching and would have a real visual ‘wow’ factor on the road. As part of the

competition brief, we were looking for the public to help inject some personality, colour and fun into one of the Avis fleet cars, and this is exactly what Chris delivered with his vibrant chain-breaking design. I was so excited by Chris’s design on paper, and it is fantastic to see it now as a reality.”

For the last 16 years Chris has worked as a software engineer, and is currently employed as a Solutions Architect at Citigroup after re-locating to Ireland in 2001.

Winner Chris Quayle said, “I was shocked, and overjoyed when I heard I had won the Avis Art Car competition. I had a great time working on the design, and felt inspired by the Freedom From Limitation theme. My wife Elaine, our two children, Alannah and Adam, and I are so excited to see my artwork be brought to life on the open road!”

I

am a little bit confused by Ford’s policy of having two almost identical, seven seater MPVs, the Galaxy and the S Max. Both are after all built on the same platform and use similar mechanical units. Perhaps it is all down to the exterior styling.

The S Max has a more sporting side profile, due to its more sporting side window line. The Galaxy has a more practical, van like appearance, with its larger more rectangular side windows.

The test car was fitted with Ford’s wellproven 2.0 litre TDCi diesel engine, driving the front wheels, through a six speed manual gearbox. The engine is smooth and powerful and the gearchange is light and precise, making the S Max a pleasure to drive. This pleasure is heightened by the fact that the higher build of the S Max allows both the driver and passengers to get a better view all round, especially in city driving conditions. The steering wheel is leather covered and is geared to provide

2.7 turns from lock to lock. The steering’s electric power assistance gives a light, yet direct feel. Although the S Max is a large car overall, it rides and handles well in all conditions from narrow twisting country roads to city traffic and straight open motorways. It is the sort of comfortable, practical car I could comfortably live with as my daily transport. Its performance is more than satisfactory, with a potential top speed of 195 kph (121 mph) and a 0-100 kph acceleration time of 10.2 seconds. contd. on page 4

Being a seven seater, it is obviously intended to be a practical family car. The specification of the test car provided a frugal fuel consumption, for a car of this size, when measured by EU testing standards, On the Urban cycle, it is credited with a fuel consumption of 40 mpg (7.0 lt/100 km), stretching to 54 mpg (5.2 lt/100 km) on the Extra urban cycle. This gives a Combined cycle average of 47 mpg (6.0 lt/100 km). It also gives an exhaust

emissions reading of 149 gm/km, placing the S Max in Irish road tax band C, with a current annual charge of €330. In my view that is highly satisfactory for a large, comfortable, versatile family car like the seven seater S Max. If you do need the seven seats all the time, then there is a disadvantage in that the normal luggage space is only 0.285 cubic metres, which is very much in the small car segment. However, if you don’t need the seven seats all the time, the rear

As the pictures show, the S Max offers a very versatile

luggage space. However, for family holidays, you may need all seven seats and the maximum amount of luggage space. In these circumstances you will have to consider a trailer or roof box. The test car had a storage well below the floor on the right hand side, behind the driver’s seat. It contained a plug-in air compressor and a bottle of latex, plus a screw-

in towing eye. There was no jack or wheel spanner. In the glovebox on the front passenger side there was a plastic bag with a security socket for the security nut on each of the wheels. In my opinion this lack of a spare wheel and wheel spanner, is a major disadvantage and one that completely calls into question the practicality of the S Max as a serious family car. It is a case of

ruining the ship for a hap’worth of tar !

Generally speaking the instruments and driving controls are well laid out for comfort and ease of use. The driver’s seat adjusts for reach, height and backrest angle, while the front passenger seats adjusts for reach and backrest angle.

There are four electric windows and electrically adjustable, exterior rear view

mirrors. The instruments are easy to see in the binnacle ahead of the steering wheel and have clear white lettering on black backgrounds. The steering wheel adjusts for reach and height and has additional controls for the audio and related systems. The handbrake has an interesting, inverted U shape. The centre console houses the audio system

with the heating/ventilating controls below.

In the middle row, there are three individually adjustable seats, of the same comfort and standard

as the two front seats. The two outer ones slide forwards to give access to the two rear seats. These too are of a good standard and level of comfort.

udi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz had better look to their laurels, as this new Kia Optima is a top of the range Executive car, with a comprehensive luxury specification, yet comes on the market at an extremely attractive price. The Platinum specification, as tested, had a panoramic glass roof, with a sliding sun-roof over the front seats, leather upholstery, automatically folding rear view mirrors, a full size alloy spare wheel and a whole array of electronic applications, all included in the price as standard. In this Kia Optima you get all this luxury specification for just €28,995. With the three German brands mentioned you can get

most of these things, but each item carries an additional extra charge.

For example an Audi A6 tested in March 2010 had a

price tag of €55,050, while an E class Mercedes tested in December 2009 had a price of €53,912. Back in 2008 I had a BMW 123 D

BMW decided that my readers were not the sort of people who bought BMWs and they decided not to give me any more cars on test !

As a result I cannot give you a recent price comparison for a five series BMW, but believe me it will be up there in the Audi/Mercedes territory.

Then to top it all off in the grand manner, Kia give you a Seven years/150,000 km warranty !

The Kia Optima has a leather covered steering wheel with a polished wooden section in the top of its rim. It adjusts for both reach and height. The steering wheel itself is virtually a second instrument panel with its multitude of switches for the audio related, mobile telephone, cruise control and other associated applications. The audio unit itself is in the top centre of the facia, just below the slot for the CD. It is simple and clear, with a digital information screen for things like the satellite navigation and similar applications. Below the audio unit there is a digital

panel showing dual zone, climate control associated information, plus the outside air temperature. The selector knobs and buttons are in the panel below this small screen. Ahead of the

gearlever, there is an open storage space, plus selector buttons for the heated front seats and sockets for the USB, iPod and other connections.

In the driver’s door there

are buttons for the four electric windows, locking/unlocking, plus two selectable memory settings for the driver’s seat. The seat itself has electric adjustments for reach, height, backrest angle and lumbar support. The instrument binnacle, behind the steering wheel, contains two large analogue dials, with white lettering on black backgrounds. The tachometer is on the left and it has an engine temperature indicator in its lower circumference. The speedometer is on the right, with a fuel level indicator in its lower section. Between these two dials there is a rectangular, digital panel that displays a variety of selectable information, plus a longer digital panel lower down that serves as a background for a variety of items like, occupied seats with unfastened seatbelts, handbrake applied etc.

Wipers and washers are operated by the right hand stalk under the steering wheel, while lights and direction indicators are operated by the left hand stalk.

The two front seats are comfortable and well bolstered. They have an ample range of adjustments.

When the key is inserted into the ignition switch, the driver’s seat automatically slides forwards into its selected position. When the key is withdrawn from the slot the seat automatically slides backwards, giving more space for your feet and legs when entering or leaving the car.

I had the Optima on test during the week of my daughter’s wedding. As a result I did not have the time to gather all the information I usually present. I offer my sincere apologies for this omission.

The rear seating area is equally spacious and comfortable. While the Optima is equipped with three rear headrests and seat belts, the centre section is harder and flatter than the two positions on either side.

Thus it would be acceptable for shorter journeys, but not ideally suited to longer distances. In this it is no different to most cars on the market today. Children would probably find it acceptable. It houses a fold down centre armrest with two cup holders. The two outer positions are equipped to accept ISOfix fittings for child safety seats. The seat backrest is divided 60/40, so it can be adapted to carry both passengers and extra luggage.

The Optima offers 0.505 cubic metres of luggage space, when all five seats are in use. This is not quite as spacious as the Audi A6 or

the Mercedes E220, but very similar to the Jaguar XF-S and better than the Volvo S80 and Citroen C5. As the rear seat cushions do not lift, when the backrests are folded, while you do get more space, it does not come with a level floor. I was unable to get towing weights, or maximum roof loading weight. It is likely the panoramic glass roof may make roof loading impossible.

From a driving point of view, the Kia Optima was a satisfying pleasure all the way. It would cruise along at city and suburban speeds, silently and effortlessly, yet when you needed extra power for accelerating and overtaking, it was there immediately and effortlessly at the slightest increase in pressure on the accelerator.

Out along an open road it would cruise at the maximum speed limit without difficulty.

comfort orientated 2.9 turns from lock to lock. The gearchange was similarly light and precise, with a set of well chosen ratios, providing both performance and good fuel economy.

From a performance point of view, top speed is said to be 202 kph (125 mph).

Obviously I could not check this for myself on a public road, as it is well above our national speed limit.

Perhaps of more interest is its 0-100 kph acceleration time of 10.6 seconds, providing all the performance you need in city and suburban traffic.

On the fuel consumption side, by EU testing standards, the Urban cycle consumption is 6.1 lt/100 km (46 mpg), improving to 4.5 lt/100 km (62 mpg) on the Extra urban cycle. This gives a Combined cycle average of 5.1 lt/100 km (55 mpg). By the same standards, its exhaust emissions are 133 gm/km, positioning this version of the Optima comfortably in Irish road tax band B, with a current annual charge of €225.

The ride was comfortable, even over our poorly maintained road

surfaces. The roadholding was likewise very good, even on twisting country roads and at higher speeds on fast open roads. The servo assisted, braking system includes anti-lock, plus an electronic stability programme with vehicle stability management and hill holder assist. It uses ventilated discs at the front and plain discs at the back.

On the test car power is provided by a 1685 cc, four cylinder, turbocharged, direct injection diesel engine. It is tuned to deliver 100 kW @ 4,000 rpm, with 325 Nm @ 2,000 rpm.

VW BEETLE CONVERTIBLE MARK III

olkswagen are planning to launch the third generation Beetle Convertible at the Los Angeles Motor Show at the end of November. The original Beetle convertible was launched in 1949 and between then and the end of its life in 1980, the company managed to sell 330,000 world-wide. The second generation model was launched in 2002, when what was then the New Beetle was introduced.

This new third generation model, is expected to go on sale in European markets in the Spring of 2013. It is designed as a four seater, with a 0.225 cubic metre luggage space. However, the back of the rear seat is split 50/50, so it can be folded in sections to carry awkward or extra items of luggage.

The folding soft top operates electrically and can be raised or lowered in around ten seconds, even whilst on the move. There is also a

standard cover for the hood when it is folded.

Compared to the hardtop Beetle, the windscreen pillars are more upright and these together with two roll over bars behind the rear seats, provide protection in the event of a roll over accident.

Buyers will be offered the choice of four petrol and three diesel engines. The petrol range starts with a 1.2 litre TSI unit giving a power output of 78 kW. There will also be a BlueMotion version of this engine. Next up the scale is the 1.4 TSI with a power output of 118 kW. This should be an interesting engine, offering as it does a splendid performance, with a good fuel economy. Top of the petrol range is a 2.0 TSI delivering 148 kW. This is undoubtedly the engine for those who rate performance above all else.

The diesel range also offers a good combination. Base engine in the range is the 1.6 TDI with a power output of 78 kW, similar to that of the base petrol engine. This engine will also

be offered in BlueMotion specification. Top of the diesel range is a 2.0 TDI delivering 103 kW. This engine should offer a good combination of performance and fuel economy.

The interior is designed and finished to a very high standard. It has all the traditional instruments and controls, plus a comprehensive selection of the latest electronic aids and applications.

Recently, with the introduction of the new Golf, there have been doubts expressed as to the future of both the Eos and the Golf cabriolet.

Looking at the pictures of this new Beetle Convertible, I think that it would make an ideal sporty convertible to fill the void left by the departure of the Golf cabriolet and the Eos. I can’t wait to see it in production form and hopefully to get the opportunity to do a full road test, especially if the test car is finished in the same vibrant colours as the car pictured.

Modern design and engineering has put a lot of time and effort into making cars quieter, so much so that in most modern well designed cars, the sound of the engine is almost inaudible inside the passenger cabin. However, in certain types of car, engine noise is a very important part of the overall driving enjoyment. This is especially so for young, motor sport orientated, drivers. The Sound Symposer amplifies the sound produced by the engine and channels it along a pipe to the dashboard panel where it is easily audible to the driver. The system developed specially for the new 180 kW, two litre EcoBoost Focus ST, triggers an electronically controlled valve to open under heavy acceleration. It can double engine noise levels inside the cabin, which is a factor of pure driving enjoyment to certain drivers. It remains closed at times when the driver is likely to appreciate a more peaceful environment, such as under more moderate acceleration.

The new Ford Focus ST hatchback is now on sale in Ireland, with a recommended retail price, excluding delivery and associated charges, of €35,170.
