James Muir, president of Seat, said that sports saloons will play an important role in the Seat range in the future, but that the IBL concept did not pre-empt any particular future model. It is described as combining the elegant, spaciousness and utility of a classic saloon, with the dynamic styling of a powerful four door sports coupe.

Built on a 2710 mm wheelbase, it is 4670 mm in overall length and 1850 mm wide, with short overhangs front and rear. The LED headlamps serve several functions from main beams with variable illumination to daytime running lights.

There are twenty inches diameter wheels of a distinctive design.

Light matt leather for the interior gives a light, bright and spacious feel to this area. It is offset with black and red trim panels, which harmonise with the red exterior colour. A one piece curved glass surface covers the entire instrument panel.

The main instrument binnacle behind the steering wheel is fully digital, but it can be programmed by the driver to provide the information in a classic analogue layout, or in a fully digital format. The centre display is the information system and can be programmed to provide the information in three formats; Travel for relaxed driving, Sport for driving fun and Efficiency for fuel efficiency in the plug-in hybrid drive.

Refined Luxury and Comfort hen you open the doors of the new C Class Mercedes-Benz saloon, you are entering a world of refined luxury and comfort of the highest order. The test car was fitted and equipped to the Avantgarde standard and was absolutely superb. My only difficulty was that it is equipped with so many electronic gadgets, I doubt if I discovered even half of them, let alone got to use them.

However, those that I did use, worked with an effortless ease.

Power was provided by a 2.0 litre, turbocharged, direct injection diesel engine, driving the rear wheels through a seven speed automatic gearbox. Power delivery was 99 kW @ 2,800 rpm, with 360 Nm @ 1,600 rpm. While this is a very unstressed level of tune, giving just 46.196 kW/lt, it delivered an absolutely effortless performance. When you needed the power it was there, requiring no more than a slightly firmer press on the accelerator pedal. Top speed is a more than adequate

218 kph (135 mph), with 0-100 kph acceleration in a similarly satisfactory 9.2 seconds. On the combined cycle it gives 58 mpg (4.8 lt/100 km), while exhaust emissions are a meagre 129 gm/km. This premium quality large saloon thus falls into Irish road tax band B, with a current annual charge of â&#x201A;Ź156. Even though it is a superbly equipped, luxurious and comfortable large saloon, with a more than adequate performance, velocity wise, it still manages to deliver an impressive

47 mpg (5.9 lt/100 km) on the Urban cycle and an outstanding 68 mpg (4.1 lt/100 km) on the Extra urban cycle.

The interior was a mixture of matt black plastic, beige leather upholstery and polished silver trim. The leather covered steering wheel adjusted for both reach and height. seats themselves were well bolstered and superbly comfortable. Besides the matt black plastic, the doors and facia had polished black wood veneer trim strips.

The rear bench seat was similarly impressive and comfortable. It has a folding centre armrest that opens up to reveal two cupholders and a small storage tray. The two outer positions are provided with ISOfix fittings for child safety seats. The backs of the two front seats have pockets for storing maps and similar flat items. While the rear seat can accommodate three adults side by side, depending on their build, shoulder room may be rather tight. Two adults, however would be superbly comfortable. The seat, is however, perfectly suitable for three children, well into their teenage years.

All five seats are fitted with adjustable headrests and lap and shoulder seat

belts. When starting off, once you have fastened your seatbelt, they are automatically pulled in tightly, but they release again to a more comfortable tension. It can be a bit frightening at first, as it feels as if the car is trying to choke you, but it is done purely as a safety measure, in order to take up any unnecessary slack in the seat belt adjustment.

The instruments are all laid out for clarity and ease of use. The audio related controls are in a panel below the two central air vents at the top of the centre console.

The dual range climate control is located ahead of the gearlever at the bottom of the centre console. The steering wheel has additional controls for audio and mobile telephone functions. The binnacle ahead of the steering wheel has one large central analogue instrument and two smaller ones on either side. The large one is

the speedometer and it has a digital information panel on the dark background in its centre. To its left there is an instrument housing both the fuel level gauge and the engine temperature gauge.

The matching instrument to the right of the speedometer is the tachometer. In the centre of the facia, above the two air vents there is a digital screen that serves the audio system and the satellite navigation when fitted. When these functions are not required it shows the time in small white figures in its upper left hand corner.

Between the two front seats there are two round spaces, covered by a sliding top, that can be used as cupholders, or handy small storage spaces. Behind them is a larger storage box, with an opening top that also serves as an armrest. This new C class saloon is just so refined, comfortable and convenient, that it makes an excellent touring car.

From a touring point of view the boot offers 0.475 cubic metres of luggage space. If that is not enough for your needs, then perhaps you may like to ruin its refined good looks with a suitable roof box. It can carry up to 100 kg on the roof.

Alternatively you may like to tow a trailer or caravan. It can take a caravan/trailer fitted with brakes, weighing up to 1865 kg, or 750 kg without brakes. The only downside to towing a trailer, is that the car comes as standard with a skinny, Spacesaver spare wheel.

Ride and roadholding are excellent. The suspension smoothes out poorly surfaced roads to give a truly limousine quality ride, It follows twisty roads and goes around corners as if on rails.

The speed sensitive, power assisted, rack and pinion steering is nicely weighted for a good feel, but effortless to use. It is geared to give a sports orientated 2.75 turns from lock to lock.

Overall I found the car absolutely effortless to drive.

You are surrounded by premium quality luxury and comfort. The engine is so quiet, it is impossible to tell whether it is petrol, electric or diesel. When driving all you can hear is the rumble of the tyres over the road surface. The seven speed automatic is absolutely smooth and silent in operation. The only time you feel any activity, is when you are cruising along at a low speed and you suddenly floor the accelerator for a burst of acceleration. There is a slight jerk as the tachometer suddenly indicates a shift

esigned specifically for the requirements of European markets, the new Honda Civic, launched at the Frankfurt Motor Show, is expected to go on sale in those markets, early in 2012. It is a five door hatchback and will be offered with the choice of three engines; two petrol and a diesel. The diesel is Honda’s well known 2.2 litre unit, delivering 119 kW. Its Combined cycle fuel consumption is expected to be in the region of 67 mpg (4.2

lt/100 km) with exhaust emissions of 110 gm/km. This would put it in Irish road tax band A, with a current annual charge of 104 euro.

If you prefer petrol power you have the choice of a 1.8 litre, linked to either a manual or an automatic transmission, or a 1.4 litre linked to a manual transmission. The most economical from an operating point of view would be the 1.4 litre. It develops 73 kW and has exhaust emissions of 129 gm/km, with a Combined cycle

fuel consumption of 52 mpg (5.4 lt/100 km). It falls into Irish tax band B with a current annual charge of 156 euro.

The 1.8 litre linked to the manual transmission, also falls into Irish tax band B, with exhaust emissions of 137 gm/km, resulting from its Combined cycle fuel consumption of 48 mpg (5.8 lt/100 km). Producing 104 kW, it would obviously offer a higher level of performance than the 1.4 litre unit. When linked to the automatic transmission Combined cycle fuel consumption drops to 44 mpg (6.4 lt/100 km) and emissions rise to 148 gm/km, putting it into Irish road tax band C, with a current annual charge of 302 euro. Obviously it would be the most relaxing to drive and it should offer a satisfactory level of performance, but you do have to pay dearly for these attributes.

Obviously the recommended retail price is going to have a huge influence on which version suits you best. But based purely on the figures given above, the diesel would be my number one choice every time, provided the price is similar.

Hamann BMW 6 Series Convertible O If you are filthy rich and want to be noticed, then this is perhaps the car for you. Basically it is the BMW 6 series convertible that has been modified by tuning specialists Hamann. The company, based in Laupheim Germany, has specialised in BMW products since 1986. Besides the cosmetic body modifications, like the 21 inches diameter special Anniversary Evo alloy wheels, there are also distinctive LED daytime running lights and aerodynamic front and rear spoilers, plus revised side skirts. The 9J x 21 front wheels are shod with 265/30 ZR 21 tyres, while at the

rear they are 11J x 21 and fitted with 295/25 ZR 21 tyres. To accommodate these larger wheels, the suspension has been lowered by 30 mm.

While the car currently retains its standard engine, Hamann are working on a turbocharged 375 kW version for even more performance. So that everyone can hear your progress through the surroundings, the engine is fitted with a special, four pipe sport exhaust system.

The interior has special black anodised aluminium trim, but the company can produce anything you may require from personalised floor mats, to embroidered headrests, including specialised upholstery in the finest leather.

Hamann gave the car its public debut at the opening day of the Frankfurt Motor Show.

B

eauty is definitely in the eye of the beholder and while some people did find the styling of the previous Micra not quite to their tastes, it was nonetheless an excellent little car. This latest Micra has a far less controversial styling and it too is an outstanding little car.

Power is provided by a state of the art, modern three cylinder petrol engine, driving the front wheels through a five speed manual gearbox. Whereas some three cylinder engines can be a little noisy in their performance, the engine in this Micra is silky smooth and very subdued in its delivery of power. Looking at the figures they may not appear to be all that impressive, but behind the wheel, the power delivery is effortless and no deficiency was ever apparent, compared to the other traffic.

Indeed this Micra more than held its own with all the other traffic, in city, suburban and open road conditions. In addition it cruised along the motorway at the legal maximum with an effortless ease. It is credited with a top speed of 170 kph (105 mph), while its 0-100 kph acceleration time is 13.7 seconds. Some people have suggested that its acceleration is therefore lackadaisical, but it was always first away from the lights and it certainly did not hold up any other traffic in its city and

suburban driving.

While velocity and acceleration are one aspect of performance, of far more significance is its frugal fuel consumption.

On the Urban cycle it delivers 46 mpg (6.1 lt/100 km), which improves to a highly impressive 65 mpg (4.3 lt/100 km) on the Extra urban cycle, giving a Combined cycle average of 55 mpg (5.1 lt/100 km).

Remember this Micra has a a three cylinder petrol engine, not a diesel ! That level of fuel

consumption gives an exhaust emissions reading of 115 gm/km, putting the Micra comfortably in Irelandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s lowest road tax band A, with a current annual charge of â&#x201A;Ź104.

This is not some miniature single seater city car. The Micra has four passenger doors, a lift-up luggage access door and comfortable seating for four adults. The 60/40 split rear bench seat can accommodate three persons, provided they contd. on page 20

are of a smaller size, like young teenagers. When all five seats are in use, there is still a satisfactory 0.265 cubic metres of luggage space available. If only two seats are needed the rear seat can be folded up into a vertical position behind the two front seats, making 1.130 cubic metres of space available if you load up to the roof.

Unfortunately I was unable to get a figure for roofbox loading and in common with

many other Japanese makes, towing is not recommended.

However, in spite of those difficulties, the Micra proved to be a very adaptable and versatile little family runabout, that was comfortable and a pleasure to drive.

The instrument binnacle is simple and well laid out. In the centre there is a large round analogue speedometer with an orange digital information panel and fuel level gauge in its centre. To the left there is a smaller, yet still easy to see,

tachometer, while on the right there is a round space that incorporates various warning lights as well as a digital trip recorder and clock in its lower section.

The two horizontal spokes of the steering wheel house a selection of buttons for various things. Those on the left are for the audio system and mobile telephone connection, while those on the right cater for the cruise control. The silver panel in the centre console, below the two

round air vents, is also part of the audio system and telephone facilities. The round panel below that looks after the air conditioning and all its associated functions. Below that, ahead of the gear lever, in the forward end of the centre tunnel there are two cupholders and a small open storage space. To the left of these on the passenger side there is a 12v socket. Buttons for the two electrically raised and lowered front windows, as well as the locking and unlocking and childproof locks are located in the driver’s door armrest. The controls for the electrically adjustable, exterior rear view mirrors are on the lower side of the facia, between the steering column and the driver’s door. Lights and direction indicators are operated by the stalk on the left of the steering column, while wipers and washers are looked after by the right hand stalk. The steering wheel adjusts for height, as does the driver’s seat. Both front seats have reach and backrest angle adjustments.

In the case of the 60/40 split rear bench seat, the backrests initially drop into a horizontal position on the seat cushion, to facilitate the carrying of both passengers and awkward loads. The whole cushion/backrest unit can then be tipped up into a vertical position behind the front seat to provide even more space for awkward loads.

A Spacesaver spare wheel comes as standard and it is neatly accommodated below the normal luggage floor. The tools and jack are carried in a foam block that sits above the spare wheel. Interestingly, although sporty looking plastic wheel discs are standard, they do not have to be removed

I found this Micra to be a really pleasant, satisfying and effortless car to drive. The ride and roadholding are excellent, the car going around sharp, twisty roads as if on rails.

Although the steering is geared to give a very comfort

orientated almost three and a half turns from lock, it still felt direct and positive when negotiating twisty roads at speed. The gearchange is smooth and direct, which all adds to the overall driving pleasure. When it comes to brakes, ventilated discs are fitted at the front, with drums at the back.

KIA GT The Kia GT concept, unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show, this week, is Kia’s first rear wheel drive model. The sleek four door, four seater, GT concept, is powered by a 3.3 litre direct injection, turbocharged, V6 petrol engine. It delivers 290 kW and 534 Nm and transmits its power through an eight speed automatic transmission. Built on a long 2860 mm wheelbase, it is 4690 mm in overall length, 1890 mm wide and just 1380 mm high.

The GT concept’s wheels are interesting in having a propellor design and made in two sections, from aluminium alloy and carbonfibre. Exterior rear view mirrors are replaced by rear view cameras.

Each headlamp unit houses six deeply recessed LED illuminators, while a single wing shaped tail light flows across the rear and around either side. Burnished copper strips run up the A-pillars and along the roof and down towards the boot. This copper colour is also reflected in the colour used for the interior.

ollowing on from their Concept Universe, shown earlier in the year and based on feedback they have received, the company have now developed Concept You. Concept You is an exercise in trying to develop a new up market luxury car to replace the existing S80 model.

It has some rather interesting features like a wooden floor, as found in many Scandinavian homes, covered with hand tufted carpet. In the front the carpet has a firm texture, but it is described as being luxuriously soft in the back. The front seating area is dark coloured but transforms into a light coloured rear seating space. There are four individual seats. Those in the front are upholstered in a dark leather with suede in the centre sections for better grip, while those in the back are covered in a light beige suede with leather covered centre sections.

Walnut, leather and aluminium are used to further trim the interior.

From a driving point of view touch screens have replaced buttons and controls, with a selection that includes smart phones and iPads. The wood and leather steering wheel has aluminium and glass paddles and touch screens. The digital Driver Information Module has a touch screen in the centre console, another between the two rear seats and a head-up display on the windscreen.

The centre console touch screen remains inactive until the driver actually looks at it.

Certain functions, such as surfing the web, can only be accessed from the passenger side when the car is in motion. Information required by the driver can be switched to the windscreen head-up display, by touching the screen.

AUDI A2 CONCEPT

aking its debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show, the Audi A2 concept, is an all electric, four door, four seater model. Power is provided by a 85 kW/270 Nm traction motor, drawing its power from a Lithium-ion battery pack located in the sandwich floor construction. It provides a top speed governed to 149 kph (93 mph), with 0-100 kph acceleration in 9.3 seconds.

On a full charge it has a range of 200 km (124 miles). Using a 230 volt domestic supply, a full charge takes four hours, while a special 400 volt supply can give a full charge in one and a half hours.

Electronics play a huge part in the whole operational process, which Audi describe as shift by wire, brake by wire and steer by wire. However, when it comes to recharging, it is described as contactless charging using Audi Wireless Charging.

Lightweight plays an important part in the whole concept, with the Audi aluminium spaceframe construction being complemented with carbonfibre Polymer components, giving an

unladen weight of 1150 kg.

The A2 is 3800 mm long, 1690 mm wide and 1490 mm high. The white show car had a dark glass panoramic roof, that becomes transparent at the touch of a button. Running from front to rear at lower window level is a beam of red light, which acts as a permanent side marker, When the turn indicators are activated, this turns into a pulsating beam on the side you are turning. It also acts as a recognition beam that can unlock the doors as you approach the car when parked. The rear fog lamp produces a beam of light in fog and projects a red triangle onto the road as a warning to other vehicles. The tail lamps adapt their illumination to the visibility conditions, while LED lamps with a matrix beam provide a non-glare main beam.

There are naturally LED daytime running lights.

SUZUKI SWIFT SPORT

his latest version of the Suzuki Swift Sport was introduced at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

Although its M16A engine is basically the same as that used in the previous model, it has been refined and updated with a variable intake system, increased valve lift and revised variable valve timing, which all contribute to increasing power output to 100 kW @ 6,900 rpm and torque to 160 Nm @ 4,400 rpm. In spite of this increase in both power and torque, Combined cycle fuel consumption improves to 44 mpg (6.4 lt/100 km) and exhaust emissions reduce to 147 gm/km. Helping in this improvement are the substitution of the former five speed manual transmission with a six speed manual in this latest version.

A new design of alloy wheel has been specially produced for the Swift Sport and each rim is around 1kg lighter than previously. They are fitted with 195/45 R 17 tyres that have similarly been specially developed

for the Swift Sport. Riding on a 2430 mm wheelbase, the new Sport is 3890 mm long, 1695 mm wide and 1510 mm high. Numerous revisions and refinements have been made to the suspension, both front and rear, as well as to the wheel bearings, to give a more sporting handling.

The new model goes on sale in certain European markets from October, but models for the Irish and UK markets are not expected until early in 2012.signal can detect when a driver is applying the brakes hard and suddenly. When this happens it flashes the brake lights three times to warn following traffic.

The EX specification includes all of the above and adds rear electric windows, electrically adjustable, rear view mirrors, front fog lamps, Bluetooth telephone connections, air-conditioning and additional audio controls on the leather covered steering wheel, plus iPod and USB sockets. The EX specification is listed at €12,595.
