ord’s three cylinder, one litre, EcoBoost, petrol engine, is a marvellous piece of machinery.

It uses all the latest technology, like turbo charging, direct fuel injection and variable valve timing, to deliver an outstanding performance, velocity wise, but combined with a very frugal fuel consumption and low exhaust emissions. The 999 cc engine has a power output of 74 kW @ 6,000 rpm, which equates to a specific power output of 74,074 kW/lt, which is right up there in the super grand touring category. In this five door Fiesta hatchback it offers a top speed of 180 kph (111 mph), with 0-100 kph acceleration in 11.2 seconds, which may not impress you as a super sporting performance, but it comes with an EU testing standards, Combined cycle fuel consumption of 65 mpg (4.3 lt/100 km) and exhaust emissions of 99 gm/km. That is impressive, incurring an annual Irish road tax, at present rates of 180 euro. Fuel consumption on the Urban cycle is 53 mpg (5.3 lt/100 km), improving to an outstanding 76 mpg (3.7 lt/100 km) on the Extra urban cycle. From a driving point of view, the Fiesta 1.0 EcoBoost is just as at home in city and suburban driving as it is out on open country roads or busy motorways. It has the acceleration and speed to comfortably match all the diverse driving conditions you are ever likely to encounter. Its ride and roadholding is excellent, the steering light and positive, with a sporty 2.5 turns from lock to lock. The brakes were well able to cope with all the diverse driving conditions in a safe and confidence inspiring manner. Based on my experience with this car, I was not the least bit surprised to discover that it was the best selling small car in both the UK and European markets as a whole during 2012. In the ever growing Chinese market it was also the best selling passenger car in 2012.

Besides being stylish and good looking, it is also a highly practical small car for everyday use. The two front seats were superbly comfortable. The 60/40 split rear seat will accommodate two average sized adults in comfort and can carry a third adult passenger if the need arises. It has ISOfix fittings for two child safety seats, for those with young children. Its normal luggage space, under the rear parcels shelf, is 0.276 cubic metres. This can be expanded to 0.960 cubic metres if the shelf is removed, the rear seat backs folded and you load to the roof.

While the luggage capacity may not be the best in this segment of the market, it is not the worst either and is up there with most of its competitors. contd. ON page 6

Although it has a small capacity engine, it can still tow braked trailers/caravans up to 900 kg in weight. While its attractive alloy wheels are of fifteen inches diameter, the spare wheel is fourteen inches diameter, but it is a full size wheel, not a skinny Spacesaver, so it would be perfectly suitable for use when towing if the need arose.

The instruments and driving controls are laid out for comfort and ease of use.

The main instruments are housed in a binnacle behind the steering wheel and comfortably in the driver’s normal line of sight. There were two large, round, analogue gauges, with black backgrounds, white lettering and blue needles. That on the left is the tachometer, with a red strip from 6,500 rpm to 8,000 rpm. Matching it on the right is the speedometer. Its background is also used to

display red warning lights for various functions.

In the lower centre of the binnacle, between the two large gauges, there are two small indicators for engine temperature and fuel level. At the top centre of the binnacle, there is a digital panel that shows things like the outside air temperature, the current level of fuel consumption and other selectable information.

The right hand stalk under the steering wheel controls the

wipers and washers, front and rear, while the left hand stalk looks after the direction indicators, headlamp flashers and main/dipped beam selection. On the left hand horizontal arm of the steering wheel there are audio system related selectors/controls. The driver’s door armrest has controls for adjusting the exterior rear view mirrors and operating the front electric windows.

At the top centre of the

facia there is a digital screen that can display audio related information and maps for the satellite navigation when fitted. When not needed for these operations it shows the time and date in clear lettering. Below this there is a slot for the CD and a large panel with two knobs and a number of buttons for audio related systems. It also has buttons for the central locking/unlocking and the hazard warning lights selector.

Below that, just ahead of the gear lever, there is a smaller panel, with three round selectors for the airconditioning system. The small selector on the left controls speed of the air distribution and the windscreen demisting. Its opposite number on the right selects the temperature required and operates the rear window demisting, while the large central dial controls the air conditioning, the distribution of the airflow and the choice of fresh or recycled air.

There is an open storage space ahead of the gear lever and two open cupholders in the centre tunnel alongside the gear lever. There is also a large covered storage space on the left hand side of the facia, ahead of the front passenger seat.
