DRIVING EACH OTHER
NUTS!
Next time you and your partner go out together, it may be a good idea to get a taxi or use public transport rather than the car. According to recent research, put a couple together in a car and the only place they're likely to drive each other is round the bend. The survey found that one-in-five people regularly argued with their partner about their driving skills and bad habits. We're not too happy about lending our pride and joy to each other either. Women are slightly more trusting than men, with three-quarters saying they would allow their partner to use their car. When it comes to men, only two-thirds would be prepared to hand over the keys. There is some basis for caution here: one-infive respondents admitted to having had an accident in their partner's car.
HOW BAD CAN THE DIFFERENCES BECOME? Well, among the 17 to 24-year-olds, almost one in 10 had broken up with a partner over their car. The figure for all ages is slightly lower, with just three per cent admitting a car was the reason for a relationship break-up. When it comes to fixing things, half of the women surveyed said they would trust their partner to carry out minor maintenance checks or repairs, yet eight in 10 men said they would never ask their partner for help. When asked if they have ever stopped to

CONCEPT CAR REPORT

CITROËN AIRCROSS CONCEPT
A
s the brand celebrates 50 million vehicle sales since its creation some 95 years ago, Citroën is unveiling a surprising, creative and bold new concept car ahead of the Shanghai Motor Show. The new Citroën AirCross concept confirms the brand’s ability to develop its new positioning. Blending power and positive energy, the Citroën AirCross is a protective and welcoming SUV. This resolutely optimistic vehicle casts off any sense of aggression in favour of; a pure and engaging personality, through the overall balance of the body styling underscored with flowing forms, that are punctuated by strong graphic components, including ‘Alloy Bumps’ and ‘Air Signs’. The positive design is heightened by vibrant orange-red paint work symbolising energy and serenity, with innovative materials denoting
robustness. A styling approach emphasising functionality and aerodynamics. The Citroën AirCross concept car was unveiled at the Shanghai Motor Show. This symbolic venue was chosen to reflect the importance of the Chinese market, which accounts for 25% of total sales and stands as Citroën’s number one market. The body is set on large wheels with 275/42 R 22 tyres. The tyres were designed exclusively for the Citroën AirCross by Continental and feature large tread blocks and a unique pattern for excellent traction on the most demanding surfaces. The striking design of the wheels highlights the all-terrain abilities of the Citroën AirCross. The Citroën AirCross is powered by plug-in hybrid petrol technology, with an electric motor located on
the rear axle. This configuration is a perfect fit for the Citroën AirCross, optimising performance and traction, while ensuring low fuel consumption and emissions. The electric motor develops 70 kW and torque of 200 Nm. The motor is powered by lithium-ion batteries, that charge up in just three and a half hours via a 16A domestic socket. The electric motor is combined with a 1.6 THP petrol engine developing 160 kW and torque of 275 Nm. With its plug-in hybrid powertrain, the Citroën AirCross respects the environment. This is especially true in urban driving conditions in ZEV mode. This all-electric mode has a range of 50 km (31 miles). On roads that require successive acceleration and deceleration, the hybrid technology limits fuel consumption by combining both energy sources. On the motorway, the internal combustion engine takes
over, providing optimum high speed performance. No compromise has been made in terms of driving pleasure. When the driver accelerates quickly and torque is required immediately, a boost function combines the torque of the internal combustion engine and the electric motor, delivering optimum performance with up to 230 kW available. Combined cycle fuel consumption is 166 mpg (1.7 l/100 km) and CO2 emissions are an impressively low 39 gm/km. The Citroën AirCross accelerates from 0 to 100 kph in just 4.5 seconds. KEEPING YOUR CAR AND ITS CONTENTS SAFE H
aving your beloved car or items from it stolen is not only distressing but also very inconvenient. Unfortunately this type of crime is an everyday occurrence and will probably happen to most of us at some point during our driving lifetime. Statistics show that public car parks are the most likely place for this crime to take place, with 48 cars targeted out of every 10,000, as opposed to only 11 outside the home or workplace.
The greatest rise in car related crime is where the car is accessed with a key, and although it would seem absolute folly to leave car keys in the ignition of an unattended car, this happens more often than you may think. Drivers will fill up with petrol and then go into the station to pay leaving the car open with the keys inside. Another classic example is the motorist who switches on the engine to defrost the car on his driveway and then pops back indoors. Opportunist thieves are quick to act, and it only takes seconds to jump into the car and drive away. If a car is stolen in this way it is quite likely that the insurance company will refuse to pay out, taking the view that the theft was committed due to the owner's negligence. While it would appear that keys are safe inside the house this is not always the cas either. Do not leave keys lying in full view of the door or letterbox, and be wary of unexpected and unknown callers. Leaving valuables on view in a parked car is asking for trouble, so ensure they are out of sight and thus not a temptation to a thief. It is a good idea not to leave clothing on the seats
as this can look as though something is concealed beneath and a window may get smashed for the sake of an old work jacket or the dog's travel rug. Valuable items can now be security marked, and although this does not prevent theft at least you have the satisfaction that these items will be difficult for the thief to pass on. While modern cars are becoming more difficult to drive away with, there is no window that can't be smashed or item that can't be grabbed in minutes, so keeping temptation out of the way is the best policy. Always be aware of where you are parking your car. If it is going to be left at night try to ensure there is good lighting not only for the sake of the car, but also that of
the motorist if they are going to be returning to the car during the hours of darkness. Choose manned car parks when out and about whenever practical; they may cost a bit more but they are statistically safer for you and your car. If there is no immobiliser on your car look into having one fitted, and put stickers on your car windows stating that the vehicle is security protected, even if it isn't. While manufacturers are improving car security systems year upon year with more sophisticated devices, it is still the responsibility of motorists to play their part in keeping their cars safe so that they can keep on motoring.

HOW TO MANAGE A
TEST DRIVE AND CONDUCT A DEAL?
Y
ou want to sell your car. You've cleaned it up so it looks its best, you've advertised in all the right places and now the buyers are starting to respond. You need to have the right answers and know-how to conduct a deal professionally to get the maximum price from the sale. It all starts on the telephone. Anyone who knows anything about buying a private car will ring up and simply say, "I'm calling about the car." The reason is simple. If you're secretly a dealer in cars, even on a small scale, you'll say, "Which car?" That tells the canny buyer all he needs to know. It will provide reassurance that you're a bona fide individual seller if you simply respond by restating the make and model and ask what details the caller would like to know. Be honest and straightforward in answering questions. Obvious ones you're likely to get are: "Are you the car's owner? How many miles are on the clock and can you be sure these are genuine? Is the car subject to any finance agreements? When was the last service? Why are you selling it?" Answer simply without unnecessary detail. Don't get into hard bargaining over price on the phone. buyer. Don't drive it alone to an unfamiliar place to meet a buyer: the practice is for the buyer to come to your home. Allow them to see the car in daylight and have time for a test drive. If the potential buyer is going to test drive the car - and he or she should - make sure you let them know in advance that you will need to see their driving licence and valid third party insurance. They will have this with any comprehensive policy for another vehicle. Check the licence properly and make a note of the driving licence number when you see it. There's no need to be embarrassed. You would expect this if the roles were reversed
and, as a law-abiding citizen, would not mind. If you allow someone to drive without having the proper documents, you are committing a crime and could end up in court if there were to be an accident. It also makes sense to make it clear that during any test drive, the driver will take responsibility for any offences, such as speeding. You should never allow a stranger to drive the car without you. This is inviting theft and there's no reason any genuine buyer should want to. Try the garage salesmen's method: invite the buyer to take the driver's seat while you get into the passenger seat. Belt up and explain the controls
and only then hand over the keys. If you drive first, the favourite method of swapping over is to let the buyer walk from the passenger side to the driver's side while you shimmy from one seat to the other. If you both have to get out and walk around, take the keys and follow the procedure above. Unlike many showroom sales reps, you should allow any serious potential buyer a proper test drive, rather than five minutes around the block. Half an hour or more would be reasonable so that the car can be driven on different types of road. If asked for a suggested route, you might have worked out something in advance to
cover these, and you can explain the reason for your choice. The aim of a test drive is for the buyer to get a feel for the car and check it's what they want. The onus is on them to ensure it works properly and that they're happy with it. They've no comeback if they buy a lemon. And you should want them to feel it's the car for them too, while being discretely circumspect about security. Courtesy, honesty and a helpful attitude are likely to make a buyer feel much better about a car and that nothing is being hidden from them, and that's likely to translate into an offer to buy.

this easily and you may seem like a pushover for bargaining later. Better to simply say that when the potential buyer sees it you feel they'll agree it's fairly priced, and that ultimately you will consider the offers made by all who are coming to inspect it. You may also want to explain what the caller would need to bring in order to test drive the car - insurance and licence - and about the payment methods you will accept at the time of a sale. It makes sense to give your full address only to someone who says they want to inspect the car. If in doubt about the caller - and thieves will happily check out and steal very ordinary family cars to order say you'll need to call them back shortly to arrange a time for a viewing when you are sure you can be there. That way you at least have a phone number if the car gets stolen overnight. If the enquirer is interested but reluctant to commit to an inspection, they may be working their way through a list of possible vehicles. You could offer to take their number and call them back if you have someone else interested in buying so they could still inspect or make an offer if they wanted. Any sensible buyer is, of course, going to want to see the car. Consider the security of both yourself and the potential

If you are on a budget there's no point spending thousands of pounds on features you don't really need.
hen it comes to buying a car, it's easy to be wowed by images in the Sunday supplements and ideas of what's cool from too many hours watching Top Gear. But a car is a big investment and you need to work out what your needs are, rather than Jeremy Clarkson's. What do you actually use your car for? There's no point becoming wedded to the idea that you need huge space in the back because on a single occasion three years ago you would have found it useful when bringing a flat-pack wardrobe from IKEA. You'll pay through the nose for it. Maybe what you really need is a car to do the school run and haul the groceries once a week with only very occasional longer trips. For others there's a lot of motorway driving, or moving lots of equipment, or transporting half a dozen people at a time. If you are on a budget - and let's face it, that's most of us - there's no point spending thousands of pounds on features you don't really need. Especially interior space. A family of four may require an urban runabout and school-run taxi. So what they want is four seats, economy and maybe above average safety. It's true that a large 4x4 will smooth out the ride over those cursed sleeping policemen between home and school, but is it worth paying thousands and thousands of euros extra for that and seven seats? Equally, if you travel thousands of miles up and down the country, it's worth looking for something that provides the levels of comfort you need and a diesel engine's economy is likely to far outweigh the extra initial purchase cost. Having established the sort of space and features you need, you then need to decide whether you want to buy new or used. If you buy a new car, of course you can choose exactly what you want in terms of model, colour and trim. You'll know the car hasn't been thrashed by a previous owner; it will be in pristine condition and will come with a manufacturer's guarantee of three years or more. But it comes at a price. The most expensive journey you'll ever make is the one out of the showroom. In a few short moments you've lopped four figures off the value of the car when you come to resell. It is true that you're
more likely, though, to find special offers on a new car and some large discounts if you're prepared to do your homework, shop around and be a little bit flexible. Depreciation is at its greatest in the first year of a car's life. So you may want to think about using your budget to look at a second-hand car that's a year or 18 months old instead. You'll still get the balance of the manufacturer's warranty and could even get a bigger or better equipped model within your original budget. Beyond that, if the warranty is an important issue to your peace of mind, it's worth looking at the many used car warranty schemes that exist. You are most likely to have your own ideas about what constitutes style and reliability when it comes to buying a car. In truth, just about any model of car available today is built to a standard of reliability that would have seemed incredible 20 years ago. Old jokes about poorly made brands just aren't valid any more. Some people, of course, want to pay for prestige, which is fair enough. In fact, the extra investment in a particular sporting or upmarket brand isn't likely to turn into a loss, as the selling price, a few years down the line, is likely to continue to reflect the notional value of the badge. At the other end of the scale, some people want something old and basic from the local used car trader or from the newspaper classified ads. Whichever end of the scale you're on, you need to factor running costs into your budget. There's no point using every last penny to get the car of your dreams only to discover that the insurance and running costs are astronomical. So when you have your eye on a car you like, check what the insurance will be, remember the road tax, see how many miles it will do to the gallon and have a rough idea of what regular servicing will cost. Motoring organisation the AA publishes lists of average running costs on its website (www.theaa.ie) which include all the elements involved. Ultimately you must have a mental wish-list for your new car and work out which features are absolutely essential and those on which you will compromise. Then see how far your budget will stretch. There are lots of cars from lots of sources to choose from, so it's then just a matter of getting out there and finding what you want at the price you can afford.
The most expensive journey you’ll ever make is the one out of the showroom

Driving motorists to distraction
M
obile phones are now such a part of our lives that for most of us they're the last thing we see at night and the first thing we look at in the morning. Our addictive relationship with the gadget has grown in proportion to the apps we rely on to direct our daily lives - not all of which are to our benefit. The dangers of using a mobile while driving are well documented and do attract a fine, penalty points and higher insurance premiums. Yet new research reveals that despite the practice being illegal since 2003, three quarters of British drivers see others using mobile phones on some or most journeys, while a quarter spot drivers using their mobile on every trip. And it's not just talking that's the problem - some drivers are texting, emailing, Tweeting, updating their social networks or taking photographs on the move. The AA/Populus poll of nearly 21,000 UK drivers found 42 per cent say they used a hand-held phone in the car even though nearly two thirds admitted it distracted them from driving. Some 20 per cent confessed to texting behind the steering wheel, four per cent admit to checking emails and two per cent have sent emails or read Twitter or Facebook updates on the move. Another worrying and morbid development is the advent of "digital rubber neckers" - drivers who feel the need to use their phones to film or photograph serious crashes on the motorway, says the motoring organisation. In one incident police recorded 80 drivers using their phones or cameras to photograph emergency services carry out a four and a half hour rescue of a woman trapped in her crashed truck.
Edmund King, AA president, says: "Drivers need to concentrate on driving rather than be distracted by their digital technology. Our research shows that some drivers are now using their smart phones for more than talking on the move. It is really not smart to talk, text or tweet on the move. "Digital rubber neckers who photograph crashes really are morbid voyeurs who should be concentrating on the road not the victims of crashes. It beggars belief that these macabre motorists should put their lives and others at risk through their lust for twisted metal. "We would like to see the police target more mobile phone abusers so that the message gets out that it is not worth hanging on the telephone while driving. However, we have seen a 29% reduction in traffic police in the last decade so their resources are stretched." Road safety charity Brake's campaign urging drivers to put their phones out of sight and out of mind while driving warns that using a phone behind the wheel can lengthen reaction times to a similar
extent to drink driving, significantly increasing the risk of crashing. The charity says unlike other types of deadly risk-taking, men and women - young and old - are almost equally guilty of using their phone behind the wheel, showing widespread misunderstanding of the dangers. Julie Townsend, Brake deputy chief executive, says: "Use a phone while driving and you are taking a horrendous risk with your own life and the lives of others. Many drivers who wouldn't dream of drinkdriving are using phones while driving, oblivious that the effect on your reaction times can be similar. "We're urging people to drive smart, recognising that phone use at the wheel can and does destroy lives, and no call or text is ever that important. If you need to use your phone urgently, pull over somewhere safe first: it's as simple as that. We are also calling on the government to do more to tackle phone use at the wheel, including banning hands-free phones and bringing in far stiffer penalties."
DRIVING WITH CHILDREN keeping it stress-free suitable for a toddler, and car seats should be replaced as the child grows. The seat should be correctly fitted as defined by the manufacturer's instructions and should be in compliance with current safety
C
onveying your children in the family car is an almost everyday experience but there are some important and often overlooked factors in making sure that the journey is a safe and pleasurable experience for all concerned. Children under three should be carried in a safety seat which is the correct type for their weight, both for the comfort of the child and their safety. What is suitable for a baby is not
guidelines. Always be aware that children are curious little beings. Employ child locks for every journey, and make sure that tiny fingers are out of the way when the electric sunroof or windows are opened or shut. The new style of sun shades which still allow the window to move up and down are a good addition to your car, providing shade on sunny days and
protecting a stationary child from becoming overheated. Most children cope well with the normal day-to-day journeys by car, but a longer trip can be a challenge for all concerned. Every parent will have experienced the stress that can occur on long drives with restless, bored children in the rear. It can be very distracting for the driver but there are some very simple steps that can be taken both prior to, and during the journey, to alleviate this. Pack your car before you pack the children in and make sure you don't overload it and make it impossible for them to move. Be careful to ensure that items are secure and cannot be thrown about the car during braking or other manoeuvres. You can get your children to pack a small bag of favourite things to entertain themselves with on the journey so that they will see it all as an adventure and something pleasurable. Tell them where you are going, how long it will take and what you
22 MotorMarket
will be doing at the journey's end, so they know what is going on and how long they are to be in the car. Put their favourite music or story CDs in the car to play during the trip and pack up a few healthy snacks and drinks, avoiding any with additives which may make your children hyperactive. If the trip is very long, it is important to schedule regular stops for toilet breaks and to stretch little legs. There are plenty of places that have play areas attached and just half an hour of running around will keep them from getting too bored, as well as giving the driver a chance to have refreshments and stretch their legs too. It is sometimes a good idea to travel at night as most children will happily fall asleep in the car and only awaken when a large portion of the journey has been completed. Driving long distances with children is not always a pleasurable experience but with a little forethought and planning it need not be something to be dreaded.
