TRIM & ENGINE OPTIONS Presently, the new Hyundai i20 is available in two trim levels – entrylevel ‘Classic’ and a limited-run ‘Launch Edition’, with the latter coming with the option of a twotone colour combination for ultimate personalisation.

With 1197 cc of engine displacement and 4 cylinders, the new i20’s 84PS (83bhp) entry engine comes with a 5-speed manual transmission as standard. This

power unit is available in both trim levels and offers pleasant torque delivery, along with fuel consumption as low as 5.3l/100km on a combined driving cycle, and annual road tax of just €190 (Co2 120g/km). However, the new i20 ‘Launch Edition’ is also available with a 100bhp 1.0-litre petrol engine in automatic transmission guise only, which attracts annual road tax of €210.

TEST CAR My test car was a new Hyundai i20 1.2-litre (5speed manual) ‘Launch Edition’, which was finished in striking Polar White with a contrasting black roof and door mirror casings for added visual drama (a €500 cost option).

The standard equipment of the e-tron GT includes a heat pump that heats the interior with the waste heat of the high-voltage components. It can reduce the loss of range caused by climate control significantly, especially in winter when it replaces the thermoelectric heating element. Customers can manage pre-entry climate control of the interior and charging via their smartphones using the myAudi app.

Like all Audi models, the e-tron GT is fully connected.

The infotainment, the online services from Audi connect, and the assist systems are state-of-the-art. And since the dynamic work of art must also sound good, Audi has composed a unique sound for the e-tron GT. It sounds powerful and progressive – like a real Audi.

FIRST DRIVE IMPRESSION At the recent launch event in Dublin I was given the opportunity to drive a

new e-tron GT for a thrilling 60 minutes, with every passing minute proving to me how much of an amazing feat of technological advancement Audi’s engineering team have achieved.

The e-tron GT is blessed with a magically supple ride quality, fast and precise steering, effortless supercarrivalling performance and massive road presence, while a pulsating hum from outside the car warns pedestrians of your imminent arrival.

With 405-litres of boot space on offer, and an additional 81-litres under the bonnet, the e-tron GT is quite a practical car too.

I look forward to spending more time behind the sumptuous leathertrimmed steering wheel of the new Audi e-tron GT in the coming months, and I will publish a full road test review then.

One thing is for certain though – the low, long, wide and lean looking e-tron GT will attract admiring glances wherever you go in it.

World’s first rechargeable electric car recreated for historic test drive

o mark the 140th anniversary of the first viable, battery-powered electric vehicle MAXUS, one of the world’s leading EV commercial vehicle brands, supported the recreation of the 1881 replica, which had its inaugural journey through the streets of Paris on the 19th April 2021.

The replica vehicle, which took two months to create, paid homage to French inventor and electrical engineer, Gustave Trouvé, who is believed to have driven the world’s first rechargeable electric vehicle down Rue de Valois in Central Paris in April 1881.

A combination of an English-made tricycle, and his own electric motor and rechargeable battery, M. Trouvé’s invention paved the way for a wave of late Victorian electric cars.

The replica vehicle was created by Victorian cycle engineer, Christian Richards in his workshop in North Yorkshire. It was transported to France in a MAXUS eDELIVER 9, where it followed the original EV’s first test-drive route at an average speed of 16kmh.

The replica EV has been made with materials

that closely match the original vehicle. “I was actually researching electric vehicles when I had the call to see if I would like to recreate the 1881 model,” said Richards. “There are very few detailed images of the original EV available, but I think this is pretty precise and I’ve tried to stay as true to the original as possible.”

The model was built using a Coventry lever tricycle and the only 21st Century elements are a battery and motor from an e-bike.

Like the original, the replica vehicle features solid rubber tyres that are not much wider than a thumb and a brake made from a strip of leather.

Unlike the EVs of today, the original EV model is not what many would consider a comfortable carriage.

“It is quite lively, especially with tiller steering. I have put a restrictor on the throttle, but even so, it has lots of power,” Richards commented, after the first test drive, undertaken at jogging speed. “I have kept the pedals on from the original tricycle and rather than help it go faster, they help to slow it down.”

Celebrating the evolution of electric vehicles,

Trouvé was a true visionary and it’s ironic that a 19th Century invention, with just a few 21st Century modifications (quite a few actually), is now the powertrain of the future.

The MAXUS eDELIVER9 with its slightly bigger battery (72Kwh) and marginally better range (up to 219 miles), was the perfect carrier for this precious cargo. The idea to celebrate this EV’s 140th anniversary was the brainchild of writer and broadcaster Jeremy Hart, who has created other world firsts such as arranging for a Formula E electric race car to drive on the Greenland ice cap and getting a Jaguar on a 300m high wire over the River Thames.

NEW OPEL CROSSLAND – STYLISH VERSATILITY

he new Crossland is the first model to adopt Opel’s unmistakable new ‘Vizor’ face, which was showcased just a few months ago by the new Opel Mokka (due on sale in Ireland soon).

Physically integrating the grille and headlights, the Opel Vizor on the new Crossland extends in one single sweep across the front of the vehicle, and provides the fascia with a reduced amount of elements, while Opel’s legendary lightning-flash emblem proudly dominates the centre.

The Vizor will become a hallmark of all Opel models in the course of the 2020’s

with the idea of further integrating new technologies along the way.

At the rear, new darktinted tail-lights enhance the signature Opel wing light design, and the new highgloss black tailgate surface (available in combination with the black roof) makes the new Crossland look wider and stronger. As with the forth-coming Mokka, the Opel Crossland dispenses with the X-appendix that adorned its predecessor.

DYNAMIC DRIVING EXPERIENCE In order to prove that the new Crossland is much more than just a pretty face, Opel’s engineers have

further developed the chassis and steering of the car to deliver a dynamic driving experience. The new Crossland is crisp and compact on the outside, but very spacious and versatile on the inside, with sliding rear seats (Elite trim) designed to enhance cabin or boot space – depending on the need.

With the rear seats in their rearmost position, an impressive 410-litres of space is on offer. However, this can be extended to 520litres with the rear seats in their foremost position, or increased to a vast 1,255litres with the rear seats folded flat.

ENGINE & TRIM OPTIONS Engine options in the new Crossland consist of a 3-cylinder 1.2-litre petrol unit with 83bhp (5-speed manual) or 130bhp (6-speed automatic), and a 4-cylinder 1.5-litre turbo-diesel with 110bhp (6-speed manual) or 120bhp (6-speed automatic), with all engines designed to meet strict Euro 6d emission standards.

Trim levels consist of SC, SRi and range-topping Elite, with an impressive array of standard equipment across all trim levels.

TEST CAR My test car was an Opel Crossland 1.2-litre 83bhp SRi model, which was finished in White Jade solid paint, with contrasting black mirror casings, black roof and black alloy wheels. The 1.2-litre petrol engine produces 83bhp and 118Nm of torque, enabling the 0100km/h sprint to be completed in 14.0-seconds, on the way to a top speed of 170km/h. With WLTP fuel consumption as low as 5.9l/100km on a combined driving cycle, the new Crossland promises to be easy to live with, and easy on the pocket too.

The Crossland’s light steering makes it easy to nip in and out of lanes of traffic in an urban setting, and also helps with low-speed 30 MotorMarket

manoeuvres, while maintaining excellent stability at motorway speeds.

The 5-speed manual gearbox in my test car was slick and precise in its operation, and all major controls inside the car are within easy reach of the driver.

Key SRi standard features include 16” alloy wheels, rear privacy glass, Bluetooth™, Apple CarPlay™, Android Auto™, FM/AM/DAB radio, 7” capacitive multimedia touchscreen, remote central locking with alarm, parking sensors front and rear, rear camera, AGR ergonomic driver’s seat with 8-way adjustment and cushion extension, driver’s centre armrest, airconditioning with particle and odour filter, electric child lock function, ISOFIX child seat anchorage points x 2, enhanced traffic sign recognition, Hill Start Assist and Lane Departure Warning, along with many more comfort, convenience, safety and security features.

The Crossland’s interior fit and finish is excellent, with plush, soft-touch materials used throughout the cabin, along with some neat chrome and gloss black finishers for an upmarket look. Headroom in the cabin is excellent, while foot space under the front

seats provides additional legroom for rear seat passengers.

Additionally, the central tunnel that runs along the Crossland’s floor isn’t as pronounced as it is in its competitors, thereby ensuring the middle rear seat passenger doesn’t lose out in terms of leg room either.
