– PURE EXPRESSION T

he all-new Volvo C40 Recharge is the coupé-SUV version of the multi award-winning XC40 Recharge SUV, and it is the first Volvo car to debut as a purely electric model. Available only in a practical five door body style, the new C40 Recharge uses the same mechanicals as its high-achieving XC40 sibling, and has all the benefits of an SUV but with a lower, sleeker design. The rear of the car features a distinctive striking design to go with the lower roof line, while the new front design introduces a new face for electric Volvo’s and includes headlights with state-of-the-art pixel technology. The C40 Recharge is the first Volvo with a 100 percent leather-free interior – including steering wheel, gear shifter and upholstery. Volvo believe this represents a new, more respectful interpretation of luxury and how materials can be used in car design.

IMPRESSIVE INFOTAINMENT In the cabin of the new C40 Recharge, occupants benefit from a high seating position for a commanding view of the road ahead, while a range of colour and deco options unique to the model allow customers to personalise their new C40 Recharge to their own preferred

choice. Like the XC40 Recharge, the new C40 Recharge comes with one of the best infotainment systems on the market, jointly developed with Google, and based on the Android operating system. It provides customers with Google apps and services built-in, such as Google Maps, Google Assistant and the Google

Play Store. Unlimited data enables superior connectivity, and the C40 Recharge will receive software updates over the air, so that it will continue to improve over time after it has left the factory. All five occupants of the new C40 Recharge will appreciate the traditional Volvo comfort of

ergonomically designed seats, along with the pleasing levels of headroom on offer too. The rear seat is easy to fold individually into the load area floor so that passengers and/or cargo can be transported without compromising either comfort or safety. Continued on page 2

NEW VOLVO C40 RECHARGE

With the rear seats up, the load compartment has 413-litres of space below the load cover, but this can be expanded to 1,205-litres when all of the rear seats are folded down when the need arises. Additionally, a foldable floor acts as a handy divider to hold shopping bags secure as well as enabling hidden, lockable underfloor storage. A convenient 31-litre front load compartment provides smart extra storage, and it is the perfect space to keep your charging cables easily accessible and well protected from dirt, dust and moisture. A lower section in this storage compartment is dedicated to the storage of a puncture repair kit, with the two sections divided by an easily removable load floor. RAPID-CHARGING CAPABILITY The new Volvo C40 Recharge is available in front-wheel drive (FWD) and all-wheel drive (AWD)

guises, with the AWD variant benefitting from twin electric motors, as opposed to a single motor in the FWD edition. With the C40 Recharge (as with its XC40 Recharge sibling) Volvo has simplified the EV driving experience by omitting a starter button and handbrake. You simply get into the car, shift the gear selector to D and you are on your way. The new C40 Recharge comes with a 78kWh lithium-ion battery that provides the car with a driving range of up to 431kms (FWD) or 441kms (AWD), and the car does come with rapid-charging capability. At the car’s maximum charging speed of 150kW, the battery can be charged from 0-80% in just 37 minutes, while a full charge from a regular 7.4kW home wallbox charger takes around 12 hours (0-100%). TEST CAR DETAILS My test car was a C40 Recharge Pro Twin AWD,

contd from page 1

which was finished in striking fusion red metallic paintwork with a contrasting black roof and stylish 20” two-tone alloy wheels. As is the case with all electric cars, the instant torque from the twin electric motors in my test car enabled outstanding linear acceleration from the getgo. Producing 408bhp and a mighty 660Nm of torque, my test car completed the 0-100km/h sprint in just 4.7seconds, on its way to a top speed of 180km/h.

The selectable OnePedal-Drive feature ramps up the regenerative braking function and can bring the car to a complete stop, with little or no need to touch the brake pedal at all. Some other car manufacturer’s offer a similar feature on their EV’s, but Volvo has judged it really well and it makes for very smooth progress once you get used to it. However, if you do step on the brake pedal, the car automatically mixes

regenerative and friction braking in a well-controlled fashion. The steering is light and the wheel turns without any resistance but, if you prefer, you can increase the weight of the steering via the touchscreen. Overall ride quality in the C40 Recharge is excellent, with the car’s supple suspension set-up well able to absorb road imperfections with great ease. While many cars with similar power outputs are jumpy and impatient, the C40 Recharge allows you to

layer the power on smoothly and progressively, with none of the hesitating or lurching that can often be experienced in an internalcombustion-powered car. VERDICT & PRICING Volvo has made the new C40 Recharge an attractive and technologicallyadvanced EV in its own right. Excellent performance, a decent real-world driving range, outstanding comfort, and a host of driverassistance safety systems

come as standard across the new C40 Recharge variant line-up. Pricing starts at €53,730 (inclusive of current Government EV incentives for private buyers, but excluding dealer-related charges). A Volvo Care package comes as standard and includes service, roadside assistance, warranty and an insurance contribution (see your local Volvo dealership for full terms and conditions).

Top Gear Electric Award for New Renault Mégane

T

he All-New Renault Mégane E-Tech Electric has been named the ‘Best Electric Hatch’ at the Top Gear Electric Awards 2022. The All-New Renault Mégane E-Tech Electric scooped the prestigious award after impressing the Top Gear judges with its engaging drive, stylish appearance and quality feel. On their decision to award the latest 100 per cent electric vehicle from Renault, the Top Gear judges commented: “The New Renault Mégane E-Tech is just so serene. The suspension takes on a magic as you get some speed under the wheels, it opens up and breathes beautifully. “It’s quiet too, but it isn’t soggy. Sharp steering and rapid responses keep it alive to your direction. “The powertrain is alert too – you’d expect that from

a smallish electric hatch of 220bhp endowment. But frankly you might still want a Mégane even were its dynamics a metaphorical car crash. “It looks great, muscular but not OTT, and the cabin is a lovely piece of work, another example of the way Renault has long overtaken the VW incumbency in material quality.” The Top Gear Electric Awards were established in 2020 to celebrate the very best electrified cars the world has to offer. The award for ‘Best Electric Hatch’ follows the All-New Renault Mégane E-Tech Electric recently winning the ‘Family Hatch of the Year’ category in the Top Gear annual awards issue. As the first of a new generation of electric vehicles to benefit from the advanced CMF-EV electric car platform, the All-New Mégane E-Tech Electric

offers increased efficiency and range. The new model is available a 60kWh battery for up to 292 miles of range (WLTP). Multiple charging options are available up to 130kW for a faster turnaround, providing up to 186 miles of range in just 30 minutes. Sporting Renault’s new logo, with a compact footprint and high-tech headlights, the All-New Mégane E-Tech Electric leads the way with its elegant design. Inside, the cabin delivers ample spaciousness with optimal comfort and Renault’s new OpenR Link technology. The All-New Mégane E-Tech Electric offers up to 26 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) bringing innovative safety systems and driver aids to the segment. This has also contributed to the forthcoming EV being

BUIL LT T FOR A BETTER WORLD

HAPPY BIRTHDAY OPEL: 160 YEARS

I

n 2022, Opel is celebrating a very special anniversary. Founded by Adam Opel in August 1862, the company rose from humble sewing machine beginnings, to become first, a global leader in bicycle manufacturing, then a pioneer in automotive engineering. Enjoying 160 years of rich success, peppered with innovation, today Opel now embraces the future and is on its way to becoming a sustainable mobility brand that will rely entirely on electric vehicles in Europe from 2028. The Opel success story began in 1862 when Adam Opel assembled his first sewing machine in Rüsselsheim, Germany. Production figures quickly rose and in 1868, Adam Opel and his employees moved into a new factory. The company soon developed into one of the largest sewing machine manufacturers in Germany and exported to the whole of Europe. Opel built up its next successful pillar with the bicycle. In 1886 the first penny-farthing bicycle was built in Rüsselsheim, making Opel one of the first bicycle manufacturers in Germany. Soon the range of

models expanded to include tricycles and in 1888 the first Opel bicycle factory was inaugurated. The success story continued through the decades and by the 1920s, Opel advanced to become the world's largest bicycle manufacturer. Driven forward by his five sons after Adam Opel's death, Opel embraced automobile production in 1899 in Rüsselsheim, with the Opel "Patent-Motorwagen System Lutzmann". In 1906 the 1,000th vehicle was built. Over the course of its 160-year rich history, Opel has repeatedly set trends with new models, new comfort, technology and safety features, and created true bestsellers, each one born with a nod to the past, yet each one looking to the future. The most enduring model line to date is the Kadett, unveiled in 1936. In 1962, the Kadett A became a million-seller, a driving force behind the German "economic miracle". Rebranded as Astra since 1991, the Kadett legacy continues to ensure that innovations find their way into the compact car class, with the all-new sixth generation Astra

arriving in 2022, and a fully electric Astra-e due in 2023. Indeed, Opel was on the road to electric as early as 1971 when the Elektro GT set six sensational electric car world records on the Hockenheim racetrack. Opel continued its role as electric pioneer in series production vehicles with the electrified Opel Ampera, Europe's "Car of the Year 2012", establishing a new segment in the European automotive market. With its range extender, the coupé-like four-seater was the first electrically driven vehicle suitable for everyday use with a range of around 500km. The Opel Ampera-e, a purely battery-electric compact car, followed in 2016. A single charge of the 60-kWh lithium-ion battery provides a driving range of up to 520km. The Opel Manta sports coupe became a cult car in the 1970s and 1980s. The Manta A inspired with its design and striking front visor, which today is reincarnated as the Opel Vizor and adorns all new Opel models, from the current Mokka, to the new

Grandland and new Astra. The public emotions aroused from the unveiling of an electrified Opel Manta GSe Elektromod model in 2021 secured the production of a new Manta-e in the near-future. Born in the eighties, the Opel Corsa small car celebrates its 40th anniversary this year. Right from the start, it quickly became the best-selling vehicle in its segment. In 2019, Opel launched the Corsa-e, the brand's first all-electric compact car, making e-mobility accessible to many customers across Europe. The current-generation Corsa and Corsa-e 100% electric, is once again a bestseller in its class. The range of electrified Opel models, plug-in hybrids and battery-electric, today spans Corsa, Mokka, Grandland, Combo Life, Zafira Life and the full Opel van range, with the Vivaro-e mid-sized panel van crowned Irish Van of the Year 2022 and enjoying top position in electric van sales in Ireland year to date. By 2024 all Opel models will be available in electrified variants and by 2028, Opel will be purely powered by battery-electric vehicles in Europe.

New Škoda Fabia gets even more fabulous By DECLAN GLYNN www.motoringmatters.ie

P

revious generations of the Škoda Fabia have always offered practicality, quality and value by the bucketload, but the latest generation of Škoda’s bigselling supermini builds on these strengths, and adds stylish good looks and desirability into the mix too. More than 4.5 million Fabia’s were sold around the world over the last 20 years, with customers enjoying the affordable running costs, space, reliability and strong build quality on offer. The new Fabia is longer (by 111mm) and wider (by 48mm) than its predecessor, but an 8mm reduction in height provides the car with a sleeker and more modern look than ever before.

NEW PLATFORM What lies underneath the stylish body of the new Fabia is all-new, and the benefits that this brings to the five-door supermini are substantial. The Fabia is the last of the VW Group superminis to move to the MQB-A0 platform, with the VW Polo, SEAT Ibiza and Audi A1 having switched to the new platform in their current generations. The benefits of the new platform are to be found in every area of the new Fabia. There is improved refinement, more space inside than before, and the very latest in safety technology, with the added

bonus of improved cabin quality too. Škoda has become synonymous with practicality, along with ‘Simply Clever’ innovations (like the umbrella concealed in the inner door panel), and there is no change in that approach with the new Fabia. A 380-litre boot space behind the rear seats is on par with many cars from the class above, and this can be expanded to an impressive 1,190-litres by dropping the rear seat backs when the need arises. HIGH QUALITY THROUGHOUT Inside the cabin of the

new Fabia, a quick look around will reveal soft-touch plastics in all of the important touch points up front, stylish fabric trim inserts on the dashboard, a Fabia-branded instrument cowl, chunky air vents, and a striking two-spoke steering wheel. The new Fabia’s advanced connectivity will make everyday use of the car easier. Škoda Connect online services deliver online navigation and information services, including online traffic information, and the option to control selected vehicle functions remotely with the MyŠKODA smartphone application.

TRIM & ENGINE OPTIONS The new Fabia is available in four trim variants – Active, Ambition, Style and range-topping Monte Carlo – with LED headlights and daytime running lights, multiple airbags, remote central locking, Lane Assist (including Active Steering), Hill Hold Control, Driver Alert, Forward Collision Warning with Emergency Brake & Pedestrian Recognition, TPMS, and eCall emergency call system fitted as standard across all trim levels. Engine options in the new Fabia consist of a 1.0litre MPI 3-cylinder petrol unit with 65bhp or 80bhp (5-speed manual only), and a 1.0-litre TSI 3-cylinder petrol unit with 95bhp in 5-speed manual guise, or 110bhp when mated to a 7-speed DSG (automatic) transmission. All new Fabia’s are driven by their front wheels and can tow a braked trailer of up to 1100kg - depending on the model chosen. CAR ON REVIEW My review car was a new Fabia Style 1.0-litre TSI, which looked terrific in its Race Blue metallic paintwork with a black roof, door pillars and door mirror casings. 175Nm of torque, the refined 999cc engine enables the car to sprint from 0-100km/h in 10.6-seconds, while consuming as little a 5.1litres of petrol for every 100kms driven on a WLTP combined driving cycle. While excellent stability on the road has always been a Fabia trademark, the new Fabia feels even more solid and secure, and does a good job of convincing drivers that it is a larger car from the driver’s seat. A natural feel to the Fabia’s steering, along with excellent handling characteristics, precise gearing, and comfortable ride quality make the new Fabia very relaxing to drive. The slick five-speed manual transmission proves its worthiness when driving in city traffic, but the Fabia is equally impressive at

motorway speeds too. Key standard equipment in ‘Style’ trim includes 16inch ‘Proxima’ alloy wheels with black aero inserts, keyless entry/start system, and a ‘Bolero’ infotainment system to include an 8-inch colour touchscreen display. VERDICT & PRICING Overall, the new Škoda Fabia is an immensely practical, spacious, comfortable, frugal and stylish supermini that feels

DID YOU KNOW...??

and looks more upmarket than ever before. In addition, Śkoda’s reputation for great value for money still remains, with prices starting at just €19,150. All Škoda passenger cars comes complete with a comprehensive 3-year/ 150,000 manufacturer’s warranty, along with the benefit of 3-years roadside assistance too. All in all, the new Škoda Fabia is even more fabulous than ever before.

# Škoda, one of the world’s largest car manufacturers, has a reputation for being excellent value for money. It is the 3rd oldest car manufacturer in the world and sells over 1 million cars per year, all over the globe. Over the past century, the Czech brand has increased dramatically in value, resulting in a long list of award-winning cars that are distributed worldwide. # Since joining the Volkswagen group in 2000, the brand has gone from strength-to-strength. Škoda have a whole host of awards to their name, including ‘Auto Express’ Best Manufacturer and Motor Trader’s Car of the Year award. # Škoda have not always been a car-manufacturing company. Originally, Škoda founders Laurin and Klement began creating and selling push bikes. In December 1895, mechanic Laurin had a bike that needed fixing. He visited a bike shop in Czechoslovakia and was extremely disappointed with the service when staff were rude and refused to fix the bike. Laurin and Klement learnt how to make bikes in order to provide a service that they were looking for. They became good at creating bikes and many push bikes were sold, so they decided to take the next step and add motors. They started making motorbikes in 1899, eventually resulting in creating over 4,000 different types of motorbikes. Eventually cars were brought into the mix when the world went mad for cars, with Škoda replacing motorbikes with cars in 1905.

NEW TOYOTA C-HR GETS SPORTY

T

he original Toyota C-HR (Coupé-High Rider) SUV was launched in Ireland in 2016 and it became an instant hit with car buyers across the country due to its radical styling that mixes elegant crossover lines with a low-slung coupé-style roofline. Initially available with a 1.2-litre petrol engine or a 1.8-litre hybrid powerplant, this combination was replaced by a 1.8-litre or 2.0-litre petrol/electric self-charging hybrid powertrain when the C-HR was revised by Toyota in 2020. Updates at the time included improvements in terms of noise, vibration and harshness, and an array of style and specification upgrades, along with additional torque delivery from the electric motor. Furthermore, one By exciting new feature is the significant inclusion of a ‘ZEV Driving Data’ monitor, which displays the percentage DECLAN GLYNN time spent producing zero emissions. It is a simple but extremely effective visual tool for a better www.motoringmatters.ie understanding of the benefits of the hybrid technology in the new C-HR. NEW GR SPORT VARIANT Now Toyota has added the flagship GR Sport to their C-HR model line-up, and with it comes an impressive array of sporty exterior and interior features courtesy of Gazoo Racing (GR) - the motorsport/performance brand of Toyota. As with other trim lines in the C-HR (namely Luna, Sport, and Sol) the GR Sport is available with a 1.8-litre self-charging hybrid drivetrain, but is exclusively available with the option of a more powerful 2.0-litre selfcharging Hybrid Dynamic Force unit. Both engines are chain driven (no timing belt) and are mated to a slick electronically-controlled Continuously Variable Transmission (e-CVT) for ultimate driving pleasure. A Lithium-Ion battery

comes as standard with the 1.8-litre hybrid engine, while a Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) battery is standard in 2.0-litre hybrid engine guise. The fourth-generation 1.8 hybrid system develops 122hp and 142Nm of engine torque, with the added power of a 53kW electric motor which develops maximum torque of 163Nm from 0 rpm. An all-new 2.0 Hybrid Dynamic Force engine is energised by more power, a Sport driving mode, and a Sequential Shiftmatic transmission for a more dynamic, engaging driving experience. Standard key equipment in the C-HR GR Sport includes striking 19” Black machined-face alloy wheels, GR Sport exclusive exterior and interior design elements, darkened high

LED headlights, dark chrome-plated lower front grille, GR Sport door scuff plates, Cool Silver deco line, black Alcantara upholstery with black leather bolsters and red & silver stitching, and a driver seat with power recline and height adjust, along with black door mirrors and roof to compliment the GR Sport’s distinctive look. LOW RUNNING COSTS The C-HR GR Sport (as with all models in the C-HR line-up) offers outstanding fuel efficiency, with an official WLTP fuel consumption figure as low as 5.3l/100km (53.3mpg) easily achievable on a combined driving cycle. The combination of hybrid power and an automatic gearbox makes it ideal for urban driving or

Test drive the new

motorway cruising, with charge going to the C-HR’s batteries from energy harnessed during the driving process. It is possible to cruise silently on battery power alone at low speeds, such as driving around town, but the C-HR’s does rely on its petrol power at faster speeds. However, Toyota claim that 50% all-electric driving is possible on an everyday commute and this, along with annual road tax of just €190, equates to low running costs overall. CAR ON REVIEW My review car was a Toyota C-HR GR Sport 2.0litre, which looked amazing in its elegant Celestite Grey metallic paint, with a contrasting black roof and door mirrors. In addition to the GR

Sport-exclusive features, an outstanding array of comfort, infotainment and connectivity features also come as standard, along with Toyota Safety Sense 2 (TSS2). With 184bhp and 190Nm of torque on offer from the C-HR’s 2.0-litre Hybrid engine, the car can sprint from 0-100km/h in a sprightly 8.2-seconds, with the powertrain providing effortless acceleration and terrific refinement. Toyota’s engineers have made revisions to the suspension and steering on the 2.0-litre hybrid to account for its extra weight over its 1.8-litre sibling, and this makes it one of the best handling crossovers on the market. The C-HR performs admirably on a wide variety of road surfaces, with only

minimal road noise from the tyres. Overall though, C-HR occupants will find the car quiet and smooth to travel in, while a 377-litre boot can be made substantially larger when the rear seat backs are folded flat. The driver and front passenger are provided with an ample amount of leg room, while rear seat passengers benefit from room for their feet under the high-mounted front seats. Given the sloping roofline of the C-HR, there’s a surprising amount of headroom too, while the view out is a little limited to the sides, due to the wide roof pillars. Wide rear doors reveal a generous aperture which allows for easy access for rear seat passengers, while the rear exterior door handles are neatly concealed in the roof pillars. A plentiful supply of useful interior stowage areas will prove very useful for families on the move,

while bottle holders located on the rear door panels are sure to be popular with rear seat passengers. PRICING & WARRANTY The new Toyota C-HR GR Sport combines contemporary urban style with a powerful and sporty design, while a luxurious cabin, and the innovative Toyota Safety Sense 2 suite of advanced driver assistance systems ensure the comfort and safety of all occupants. The new C-HR range is priced from just €31,205 (exdelivery), with the rangetopping GR Sport model priced from €38,515 (exdelivery) or €41,160 (exdelivery) for the 1.8-litre and 2.0-litre respectively. All Toyota passenger cars avail of Toyota’s comprehensive 3-year/ 100,000km warranty on mechanical components, and a 5-year/100,000km warranty on Hybrid components.

NEW MG ZS EV EVEN MORE TO ENJOY system with 3D sound, rain sensing wipers, odour and pollutant air-conditioning filter, and a panoramic opening sky roof.

By DECLAN GLYNN – www.motoringmatters.ie

T

he new MG ZS EV is a Crossover/SUV that provides a thrilling new perspective on affordable electric driving. Loaded with new design features and upgraded technology, this is the most technologically advanced MG ever. The new MG ZS EV includes an extended range of up to 440kms on a single charge, enhanced control with iSMART app technology, fast charging, a 360-degree camera and so much more. The MG ZS EV now takes electrified driving to new lengths, with a long range 72.6kWh lithium-ion battery based on a novel modular design that delivers higher energy density without sacrificing battery safety or size. The iSMART app from MG gives drivers control of a whole range of smart systems – from charging at the most cost-efficient times to controlling key functions, such as pre-heating/cooling the cabin before you get into the car.

ATTENTION-GRABBING PRICE With a starting price of €31,995 (including Government grants currently available), the MG ZS EV’s price grabs attention, as it is cheap enough to make potential buyers of rival brands sit-up and take notice. The MG ZS EV is powered by a 72.6kWh lithium-ion battery which is covered under MG’s standard 7 year warranty. In terms of charging, the

Exclusive, with both models coming with standard features such as airconditioning, remote central locking, keyless entry & start, adaptive cruise control, leather steering wheel, rotary gear selector, electric parking brake with auto-hold function, front & rear electric windows, 3 modes of regenerative braking with toggle switch

ZS can be fully charged from empty in as little as ten-anda-half hours from a 7kW wall box, or 63 minutes to 80% charge from a CCS 50kW public charger, and in as little as 42 minutes from a CCS 100kW public charger. Located to the left hand side the MG badge in the front grille, the charging port is easily accessible from either side of the car. TRIM LEVELS AVAILABLE The MG ZS is available in two trim levels – Excite and

selector. It also comes with 3 driving modes – Eco, Normal and Sport, 8” colour touchscreen, DAB radio, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, and iGo in-car navigation, along with MG Pilot - a suite of advanced safety systems to provide total peace of mind on the go. Common MG ZS exterior features include LED daytime running lights, LED centre brake light, auto headlights with Bi-Function projection, rear parking sensors, 17” diamond-cut alloy wheels, and electrically-adjustable door mirrors. Range-topping Exclusive trim brings with it silver roof rails, heated and power folding door mirrors, rear parking camera, leather style upholstery with contrast stitching, BlindSpot Detection, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, 6-speaker audio

CAR ON REVIEW My review car was an MG ZS Exclusive, which struck a pose in its Brilliant Blue metallic paint. Other colour options currently available are Monument Silver metallic, Black Pearl metallic, Dynamic Red tricoat metallic, and Arctic White (non-metallic), all of which work well in highlighting the sporty SUV silhouette of the ZS. Producing 156bhp and 280Nm of instant torque, the MG ZS offers peppy performance from the getgo, with a 0-100km/h time of 8.4-seconds and a top speed of 175km/h on offer. The interior of the MG ZS is well laid out and functional, while passenger space is in plentiful supply. A 448-litre boot capacity offers around 60-litres more than the typical compact SUV, with the added benefit of a split-level boot for larger items like suitcases, prams and leisure equipment. Additionally, the folding rear seats in the MG ZS allow for the transportation of bicycles or large, bulky items that the boot alone can’t accommodate, with up to 1,100-litres of space available when the need arises.

Built to the highest standards in their state-ofthe-art manufacturing plants, MG is so confident of the quality and reliability of the new MG ZS EV that they give it a 7 year manufacturer’s warranty. The new MG ZS EV Long Range SUV is priced at just €31,995 with the Exclusive variant priced at €34,995. Managed by MG’s Intelligent Battery Temperature Control system, the water-cooled battery pack in the ZS is insulated from external temperature variations, delivering the optimum power and range whatever the weather. Designed to achieve dynamic handling and chassis feel, the ZS EV’s powertrain has been intelligently packaged to achieve a low centre of gravity. Housed underneath the passenger compartment as part of the ZS EV’s flatfloor architecture, the balanced distribution of weight keeps the ZS EV planted to the road through the corners.

Drivers urged to be alert for motorcyclists IN ASSOCIATION WITH

T

he Road Safety Authority (RSA) and An Garda Síochána are appealing to motorists to be aware of, and to look out for motorcyclists, not just over the May Bank Holiday weekend but at all times. The appeal is being made as a worryingly high number of motorcyclists have died so far in 2022. Drivers should expect to encounter motorcyclists on the road more often now and throughout the summer period. They also need to understand that motorcyclists have less protection in the event of a crash and so are many times more vulnerable. A factor in collisions involving a motorcyclist and a driver is when a car or van turns or drives through a junction / joins a main road from a minor road, fails to observe, and ends up colliding with the motorcyclist. Therefore, it is critical that drivers look out for motorcyclists, especially at junctions, at intersections, when turning onto a main road and when changing lanes. Stefan Auler, Regional Manager, Driver Testing, RSA said: “As someone who tests motorcyclists and is a keen motorcyclist, I have first-hand experience of the challenges that motorcyclists face daily on the road. “Visibility is often a factor in motorcycle crashes involving other vehicles. Because of its narrow profile, a motorcycle can be easily hidden in a car’s blind spots such as the door and roof pillars or masked by objects or backgrounds outside a car like bushes, fences, and bridges. “Drivers should always assume motorcyclists are closer than they appear. Their speed and distance are difficult to judge, especially at intersections. “Look twice before turning

right or left, crossing junctions and when changing lanes.” “Any motorcyclist will tell you of a near miss encounter or collision they’ve had with a car or van where that driver said the immortal words ‘Sorry, I just didn’t see you’. So, drivers, expect to meet motorcyclists on your journey, concentrate on observing the road and don’t get distracted.” Garda Adrian Corcoran, DMR Roads Policing Unit, Dublin Castle, said "As a Garda motorcyclist and a motorcycle enthusiast I know how enjoyable riding a motorcycle can be. I also know how vulnerable we are on the road. “Motorcycling is challenging and it requires very high levels of knowledge, skill, and understanding. A good motorcycle rider needs to have a healthy respect for the motorcycle they are riding and a socially responsible attitude when using the roads. “As motorcyclists we should also ensure we are equipped with the correct PPE and ride with dipped headlights on, to increase visibility. “Unfortunately, motorcyclists are overly represented in the road death statistics. In addition, our detection figures show that half of the top speed detections are motorcyclists, with many travelling in excess of 160km/h. “It is also extremely important to show restraint by reducing speed, and never, ever ride a

motorcycle under the influence of an intoxicant.” Garda Corcoran added that: “In June 2021 An Garda Síochána and the RSA launched the BikeSafe pilot safety initiative. The pilot programme offered a workshop on topics such as hazard awareness and an on the road assessment ride accompanied by an Advanced Garda Motorcyclist. “The workshops are open to all motorcyclists holding a full motorcycle driving licence and are free of charge. “The pilot was a huge success providing post-test assessment to over 200 bikers. “Following the success of the pilot An Garda Síochána are planning to offer the BikeSafe programme to motorcyclists on a full time basis.” MOTORCYCLE SAFETY CAMPAIGN The RSA has teamed up with Carole Nash Insurance to run a new motorcycle safety advertising campaign. The campaign includes two radio adverts that encourage drivers to always be on the lookout for motorcyclists. The RSA is also deploying a series of information videos advising motorcyclists on the four known dangerous manoeuvres for motorcyclists. Ireland’s fifth government Road Safety Strategy 2021-2030 aims to reduce the number of deaths and serious injuries on Irish roads by 50% over the next 10 years. Zero’. This is to eliminate all road deaths and serious injuries on Irish roads by the year 2050.

NEW ŠKODA KAROQ IS HERE

ŠKODA has used a more refined design language, sustainable materials, new technologies and a choice of efficient latest-generation EVO engines to make the new Karoq even more appealing. Since its launch as the second SUV model range in 2017, more than 5,000 Karoq have been sold in Ireland, making the smaller brother of the Kodiaq a mainstay in the ŠKODA line-up. Starting from €33,750 the new Karoq is available to order now. The Karoq was introduced in 2017, the second model in Škoda’s SUV line-up. It is a cornerstone of ŠKODA’s model range and was the third most delivered model in the ŠKODA range in Ireland in 2021 after the brand’s bestseller, the Octavia, and the Kodiaq 7-seater SUV. John Donegan, Director of ŠKODA Ireland says: “When we launched the Karoq here in Ireland in 2017, we stepped up the pace of our SUV campaign. The model has become a real success story and has contributed significantly to the fact that SUVs now account for over 45% of total deliveries. The Karoq offers customers an impressive overall package that includes a fresh design, improved aerodynamics, new sustainable materials, state-ofthe-art assistance systems and the latest infotainment options.” MORE REFINED EMOTIVE DESIGN LANGUAGE The new Karoq is characterised by ŠKODA’s updated emotive design language featuring crystalline elements. New design details include the wider, now hexagonal ŠKODA grille, restyled front and rear aprons, as well as slimmer and sharper LED headlights and tail lights. The daytime running lights are now split in two,

and for the first time, the Karoq can be equipped with full-LED Matrix headlights which are standard on Style and Sportline models. Aerodynamics have been improved by more than 9%, meaning that the SUV now boasts a drag coefficient (cd) of 0.30 and correspondingly lower CO2 emissions. This has been made possible, for example, by new alloy wheels with Aero inserts, a longer rear spoiler, side finlets on the rear window and the now covered underbody. An increased range of state-of-the-art assistance and safety systems ensures even higher levels of active and passive safety. NEW SUSTAINABLE INTERIOR The look of the Karoq’s interior is defined by new decorative trim and upholstery options, which can be made from sustainable materials if selected. For example, in the Eco pack, the seat covers are partly made from recycled plastic juice bottles. Optional extras to increase comfort include enhanced LED ambient lighting (standard on Style and Sportline models), which now also illuminates the rear door trim in one of ten colours, and the electrically adjustable front-passenger seat including a memory function. The Karoq is available in the Ambition and Style trim levels and as a SPORTLINE variant.

CHOICE OF THREE EFFICIENT EVO ENGINES The updated ŠKODA Karoq can be equipped with one of three efficient engines from Volkswagen Group’s latest EVO generation. One diesel and two petrol engines deliver power outputs ranging from 110bhp to 150bhp.

Josh Moffett wins Monaghan Rally

M

onaghan’s Josh Moffett (Hyundai i20 R5) co-driven by Jason McKenna took a start to finish victory in the Monaghan Rally, round three of the Triton Showers backed Motorsport Ireland National Rally Championship. They finished twelve seconds ahead of the Ford Fiesta WRC of Sam Moffett/Keith Moriarty. Armagh’s Darren Gass (Citroen C3) co-driven by Barry McNulty were a minute and 11.5 seconds further adrift in third. As expected, Moffett set the pace on the opening 11.78 kilometre state at Scotstown finishing 1.3 seconds ahead of his older brother Sam, who was onboard the Ford Fiesta WRC he last campaigned on the 2019 Donegal International Rally. Darren Gass (Citroen C3) and Robert Barrable (VW Polo GTi R5) followed. Josh was also quickest on the remaining two stages of the loop and arrived at

the Monaghan town centre service park with a 5.1 second lead over his brother Sam. Josh was delighted to be involved in a battle with his brother and was pleased with his own performance on the first stage. “He keeps me under pressure, it’s good. Yeah, it was a nice stage to start the rally. I struggled a bit on the second stage.” Meanwhile, Sam remarked, “ I knew he would be quicker than me on the first loop, hopefully, now we can close the gap. I was on new tyres while he (Josh) was on older ones.” Gass was third - 25.1 seconds further behind as he continued to acclimatise to his Citroen C3. Fourth placed Barrable was just 0.6 of a second behind Gass and was on his first outing in some seven weeks, he found the third stage particularly difficult, declaring he couldn’t find a rhythm. Monaghan’s Stephen Wright (Ford Fiesta R5)

Josh Moffett continued his perfect start to the Motorsport Ireland National Rally Championship with a third straight win

occupied fifth, he had a slight overshoot on the very first junction of the opening stage. Modifications to the rear of his Ford Fiesta Rally2 proved positive as Seamus Leonard was pleased at how it performed. Tydavnet’s Dessie Keenan (Ford Escort) was seventh and led the twowheel drive category, his Escort running with 15” rims and Reiger suspension, he was one of many drivers

that didn’t find the second stage to their liking. The top ten was completed by Paul Barrett (Fiesta R5), Brendan Cumiskey (VW Polo GTi R5) and Damien Tourish (Ford Escort). Barrett spun on S.S. 3 and also had a slight overshoot. Elsewhere, Declan Boyle’s Ford Fiesta WRC stopped as he exited a square left hand junction on S.S. 2. After about an hour, he

was able to drive the car back to service and he completed the final loop under Super Rally. Niall Maguire spun on S.S. 1 and jammed his Ford Fiesta R5 between the fences, he also slid into a bank on S.S. 3. Tim McNulty had no digital display on the dashboard of his Ford Fiesta Rally2 for both the second and third stages. On the repeat loop, there was little between the Moffett brothers with Josh

quickest on S.S. 4 and 5 while Sam punched in the best time through S.S. 6 to trail by 7.2 seconds. Gass was best of the rest - some 52.5 seconds further adrift, having spun on S.S. 4. Earlier, Barrable had leapfrogged the Armagh driver and was 5.7 seconds ahead until his VW Polo GTi punctured a rear left wheel on S.S. 6 with some four kilometres remaining of the stage. At the final service, he trailed Gass by 13.6 seconds. Seamus Leonard (Fiesta Rally2) in fifth, backed off towards the end of the sixth stage due to the amount of stones that were scattered on the roads due to the drivers making cuts. Cumiskey and Barrett were next, the latter caught the Fiesta Rally2 of Joe McGonigle, who had spun earlier on S.S. 4. Tourish in eighth moved into the lead of the modified section, the final top ten places were occupied by Tim McNulty and Dessie Keenan, the latter reckoning a change of

tyres cost him the category lead. Stephen Wright (Fiesta R5) punctured S.S. 4 and lost more time when the jack fell as they attempted to change the wheel. Out on the final loop, Josh set the seal on his third win in as many rounds. He was quickest on stages seven and eight with the final stage cancelled due to timing issues as Josh claimed a 12 second victory over his brother Sam. Gass won the battle for third even though Barrable had cut 13.6 second deficit to 8.8 seconds on S.S. 8. Leonard and Cumiskey rounded out the top six. Paul Barrett (Fiesta R5) came home seventh ahead of the similar car of Tim McNulty. The top ten was completed by the Escorts of Damien Tourish and Dessie Keenan. Courtesy of

New Dacia Duster – Styled by Nature

D

acia has enhanced and updated its big-selling Duster SUV model. This latest version features refreshed design elements, up-to-date features and technology, all while continuing to offer the same robustness, comfort, and value-for-money which it is famed for. Launched in Ireland in 2013, and available across Europe since 2010, the Duster quickly earned a reputation for delivering all the benefits of an SUV at a city car price. With shockingly affordable value at its core, the Duster has shaken-up the SUV segment, having broken the rules to become a unique offering for consumers. With more than 2 million vehicles sold, the Duster has been the number one car for retail sales in its class in Europe’s SUV market since 2019.

TRAILBLAZER SPIRIT True to its heritage, the new Duster is still a family SUV with a trailblazer spirit. Its captivating design has evolved, especially in respect of its lights and grille, which give it an even stronger personality. Stand-out exterior features include a redesigned front end, Y-shaped ‘brand lighting’, and stylish 17” alloy wheels (standard or optional model dependent). The new Duster adopts the style features of Dacia’s refreshed visual identity first seen on the new Sandero and Sandero Stepway. New light units include Y-shaped daytime running lights, a new shape that also inspired the new 3D chromed radiator grille. However, not only is the new Duster more stylish than before, but it is also more efficient thanks to its enhanced aerodynamic performance. NEW LEVELS OF COMFORT Inside, the new Duster is fitted with a high centre console with a retracting armrest, and offers a choice

of two multimedia systems with a new 8-inch screen, while a dual-clutch automatic EDC gearbox is available for the first time. In addition to the Dacia Plug & Music audio equipment (radio, MP3, USB, and Bluetooth), two new user-friendly multimedia systems are available: Media Display and Media Nav. These are accessed through the new centrally mounted touchscreen on the dashboard. Equipped with new upholstery, new headrest design, and a high centre console, the new Duster takes comfort to the next level with a more inviting cabin than before. The upholstery for the seats on the new Duster is 100 per cent new, and the fabric and shape of the enhanced headrests offer improved ergonomics. The new, slim profile of the headrests improves the visibility in the passenger compartment for rear passengers looking to the front, and vice versa.

By BREDA CORRIGAN – www.motoringmatters.ie ENGINE, TRANSMISSION & DRIVETRAIN OPTIONS Fuel (petrol-LPG) unit with 100bhp, and petrol engines (TCe) with 90bhp or 150bhp (1.0-litre and 1.3-litre capacity respectively), while a 1.5-litre (Blue dCi) turbodiesel engine with 115bhp also features. A six-speed manual transmission comes as standard across the new Duster range, with the exception of the TCe 150 engine which is available exclusively with a six-speed EDC transmission. All engine and trim levels in the new Duster come in front-wheel drive guise, while diesel engine variants are available with the option of four-wheel drive (4WD) for times when the going gets

tough. With its high ground clearance, new tyres and specific 4×4 Monitor the new Duster 4WD is at home on both the road and off the beaten track. TRIM LEVEL OPTIONS The new Duster range epitomises Dacia’s no-nonsense approach to delivering quality for the best value, with a straightforward, simple-tounderstand model line-up of four trims – Essential, Comfort, Prestige, and the limited-edition Extreme SE. The entry-level Duster Essential comes with durable steel wheels, new Y-shaped LED daytime running lights, automatic headlights, black roof bars, and a host of latestgeneration safety systems, while inside there is a height and reach-adjustable steering column, cruise control with speed limiter, seven-function on-board computer, DAB Radio and manual air conditioning. Comfort trim adds 16” alloy wheels, black-painted heated and electrically adjustable door mirrors, body-coloured door handles, front fog lights, and hill descent control. The interior, meanwhile, gains upgraded upholstery, height-adjustable driver’s seat with lumbar adjustment, leather steering wheel, electric rear 30 MotorMarket

windows, rear parking sensors with rear camera, and an 8-inch Media Display infotainment system complete with Android Auto® and Apple CarPlay®. Prestige trim brings with it 17” alloy wheels, grey Quartz door mirrors and roof bars, dark-tinted rear windows, and an acoustic windshield. Interior upgrades include automatic air conditioning, keyless entry, multiview camera, front parking sensors, blind spot warning system, heated seats, and an 8” Media Nav onboard

navigation system with wireless smartphone connectivity for Android Auto® and Apple CarPlay®. Completing the new Duster line-up is the limitededition Extreme SE, which features interior and exterior orange dynamic styling inserts, fabric and TEP upholstery accented with orange top-stitching, and striking 17” Tergan black alloy wheels. TEST CAR My test car was a Dacia Duster Comfort Blue dCi 115 2WD, which was finished in

stylish Slate Blue metallic paint with contrasting 16” silver alloy wheels. Producing 115bhp and 260Nm of torque, this latestgeneration four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine enables the Duster to sprint from 0-100km/h in 10.2-seconds, on its way to a top speed of 181km/h (where permitted). The engine feels punchier than before thanks to an overboost function that delivers torque in an orderly fashion. Overall driving dynamics are impressive, with light steering allowing the Duster to be parked with ease, while the raised ride height and seating position makes getting into and out of the Duster a fuss-free exercise. Official WLTP fuel consumption figures are quoted at 4.9l/100kms on a combined driving cycle, and this is not too far off the 5.1l/100kms that I achieved during my time with the car in real-world driving. This outstanding fuel economy, along with annual road tax of just €200, will ensure that motoring costs are kept to a minimum, with no compromise on comfort or drivability. The spacious cabin in the Duster ensures excellent leg, head, and elbow room for up to five occupants, while a boot capacity of 445-litres behind the rear seats is big enough to transport multiple items of luggage, sports equipment or other familyrelated cargo. PRICING The new Dacia Duster is a truly remarkable value-formoney SUV that offers excellent comfort, refined engines and all the space a growing family needs. Pricing for the new Dacia Duster starts at just €21,190 (ex-works) or from €182 per month through Dacia Bank (T’s & C’s apply).

DID YOU KNOW...?? # Dacia was founded in Romania in 1966 as a way of boosting local motor manufacture. It was formed as a Joint Venture with Renault, and it was a version of the medium-sized 12 saloon that the company sold throughout the 1970s and '80s. After years of underinvestment, Renault took overall control of Dacia in 1999, annoucing that it would become its budget brand. The Logan saloon was the first fruit of this collaboration. It proved successful, and led to an expansion of the range with the launch of the Sandero hatchback and Duster off-roader.

Dacia celebrates production of its 10 Millionth vehicle

D

acia is celebrating the production of its 10 millionth vehicle since the brand was born in 1968 The vehicle, produced in Romania, was a stylish new Dacia Duster Extreme SE in Urban Grey Dacia continues to grow, remaining true to its values Within the 10 million vehicles produced, there have been: • 6 million Dacia Sandero and Sandero Stepway, the best-selling vehicle to private customers in Europe since 2017 • 1 million Dacia Duster, the best-selling SUV to private customers in Europe since 2018 • .95 million Dacia Logan and Logan MCV • 3 million Dacia 1300 (and variants). Denis Le Vot, CEO of Dacia said: “We are very proud to have passed the symbolic milestone of 10 million vehicles produced. This result rewards a pragmatic vision of the automobile, focused on what

is essential to our customers. Building on its experience, Dacia will

continue to grow and offer attractive vehicles that are adapted to our customers’ lifestyles.”

Dacia started assembling its very first vehicle, the Dacia 1100, in August 1968. The following

year, the iconic Dacia 1300 model inspired a whole family of derivatives such as the sedan, station wagon,

sports coupe and LCV. It remained in production for 35 years and has left its mark on the Romanian

automotive landscape. A new chapter in Dacia’s history was opened following its acquisition by Renault Group in 1999. With the launch of Logan in 2004, Dacia became a global carmaker and the pace of sales accelerated. In 2005, Dacia opened a production line outside of Romania, at the Somaca plant in Casablanca (Morocco). The expansion of the model range, including Sandero and Duster, and their immediate successes have made it necessary to expand production capacity even further over the years. Expansion includes the inauguration of a brand-new plant in the port city of Tangier, Morocco (2012), the opening of a production line in Oran, exclusively for the Algerian market (2016) and the production of Spring starting at the Shyian plant in China (2020). Dacia vehicles are currently sold in 44 countries, mainly in Europe and the Mediterranean basin.

Tips to save fuel, money and emissions on your motoring staycation Driving style, poorly maintained tyres and excessive drag are the big offenders

W

ith the June Bank Holiday approaching, some will be jumping into their cars and heading off on a well-earned staycation. For those who haven’t switched to an electric vehicle and are still driving a petrol or diesel car, SEAI has some tips to help you drive more efficiently. This will help you use less fuel, reduce your emissions and also stay safe, not only this weekend but all the time. Fuel consumption tends to be affected most by your driving style, excessive rapid acceleration, unnecessary short trips, a cold engine, poor car maintenance and incorrect tyre pressure. A less aggressive, energy conscious driving style could save as much as 10% on your fuel costs.

REGULAR MAINTENANCE This tip applies all the time but is especially important ahead of a long journey or a motoring holiday. A properly maintained petrol or diesel car will have; good engine lubrication, wheel alignment and well-adjusted brakes, reducing your fuel use. It will also mean your car is safer and more reliable. CHECK TYRE CONDITION AND PRESSURE Be sure to check your tyres regularly. Tyres in good condition, with the proper thread depth, and at the right pressure, improve both safety and fuel consumption. Tyres that are 10% below recommended pressure increase fuel consumption by around 2%.

READ THE ROAD By watching the road ahead and anticipating any likely problems, your driving will become smoother, more controlled and be safer for all. Drive in as high a gear as is suitable to road conditions and at bends, reduce your speed gently and accelerate smoothly when you are halfway through to help reduce fuel use. AVOID IDLING Once you turn the engine on, drive off gently without delay. This will reduce excessive fuel consumption and pollution. Even if you’re waiting only 30 seconds it is more economical to switch the engine off and start it again when necessary. Incidentally, many newer cars have an automatic

stop/start function, which means you don’t have to think about this. REDUCE UNNECESSARY DRAG After you arrive safely at your destination make sure to take off any unused bike racks or roof boxes

34 MotorMarket

and save as much as 20% on your fuel costs. You can save a further 3-5% by using the car’s air-conditioning to cool down rather than leaving the windows open while you drive.

AVOID SHORT JOURNEYS A cold engine uses significantly more fuel than a warm engine. So, once you reach your staycation destination opt to walk or cycle where you can and avoid using your car for short journeys.

Polestar’s evolving digital car connectivity

T

he latest software update also brings enhanced app and functionality potential for the future, and will roll out to owners incrementally from early April 2022. The P2.0 software update is the latest in the ongoing series of Over-the-Air (OTA) software releases. Software enhancements are downloaded and installed remotely, allowing Polestar to leverage on digital connectivity to accelerate the integration of new functionality, performance and personalisation for Polestar 2 owners. Ten major OTA releases totalling close to 100 improvements have been issued since launching remote updates for Polestar 2, representing an average of one major OTA release every seven weeks. Recent examples of enhancements delivered via OTA updates include drivetrain optimisations, the ability to schedule preferred charging times, Polestar Digital Key improvements, an eco-climate

mode to improve real world range, and battery optimisation with preconditioning, amongst others. Polestar 2 customers are embracing the benefits and convenience of OTA updates, with more than 90% of all Polestar 2 owners installing updates. “Our approach to software technology in our cars is that it should not be any different from how the latest software is pushed out on smartphones and computers in everyday life,” says Polestar CEO, Thomas Ingenlath. “With OTA updates, our customers receive constant enhancements and can choose when to install the latest updates, without making a trip to a workshop. We’re very encouraged by the positive response as seen from the exponential growth in the number of OTA installations, and will continue to deliver ongoing enhancements.” In another OTA-first for Polestar, the performance software upgrade for eligible Polestar 2 Long range Dual motor

cars was made available for purchase in selected markets from November 2021. The performance software upgrade provides a sharper driving experience and increased power and torque. Output from the dual-motor powertrain increases to 350 kW and 680 Nm, the 0-100 km/h sprint time is reduced to 4.4 seconds, and overall responsiveness is sharpened. Looking ahead for 2022, Polestar aims to build on the positive customer response by ramping up the introduction of more apps, starting with the Journey Log app launched in February 2022. The app allows Polestar 2 drivers to export the journey logs – useful for those who need to claim travel expenses at work. The Journey Log app is currently available in the UK, US, Canada, Sweden and Australia and will continue to be rolled out incrementally in all markets where the Google Play Store is available. A collection of infotainment

features was launched for Polestar 2 in 2021 as well. Of these, the Vivaldi browser, Video Player and A Better Routeplanner,

are most popular with customers, with more than 12,000 downloads each as of the end of March 2022. Polestar will also continue to

leverage on the joint collaborations with partners and developers using Android Automotive OS.

DS7 E-TENSE

n 2014, DS Automobiles set itself a challenge: to revive the savoir-faire of the luxury French car. Style is born from design, and when avant-garde technology meets the poetry of design, that produces automotive excellence, all of which is embodied by DS. In 1955, the first DS made its debut – and caused a sensation – at the Paris Motor Show, making its mark on automotive history. From 2025, all new DS models will be available exclusively in electrified versions, either hybrid or fully electric, with DS promising 6 new cars by the end of 2023. MID-SIZE LUXURY SUV found, connected by a introduced a new E-Tense The DS 7 Crossback is a chrome strip spanning the powerplant option to the DS mid-size five-seat prestige width of the tailgate, while 7 Crossback range to SUV, and is the first of the some chunky black cladding provide buyers with more second-generation models endows the car with a options than ever before. from DS Automobiles. rugged, off-road look. However, DS 225bhp and 320Nm of Automobiles has now 3D-style LED taillights are torque, with these figures

increasing to 300bhp and 337Nm of torque in the twin motor version. Capable of an all-electric driving range of up to 58kms, a full charge (0-100%) can be completed in just 105 minutes from a 7kW home charging point. Using the standard regenerative braking function in the DS 7 E-Tense will send charge back to the 13.2kWh Lithium-ion battery during deceleration and braking, and this can greatly extend the driving range for even greater efficiency. Additionally, the MyDS App lets drivers control their car from their Smartphone, with range information, remote charging, and remote heating or cooling just a simple tap away. TRIM LEVELS There are three trim levels to choose from in the DS 7 Crossback E-Tense: Performance Line, Performance Line + (plus), and range-topping Prestige, with the single-motor 225bhp hybrid available across all levels, and the twin-motor 300bhp hybrid reserved for Performance Line + and Prestige variants. The DS 7 Crossback E-Tense, as with its internal combustion engine siblings, stands out a mile in the crowded market place that it finds itself in. The exterior styling is like nothing else in the class, while the interior feels even more individual, with 38 MotorMarket

unique design flourishes, interestingly shaped switches, and shiny chrome making the cabin a bright and luxurious place to be. The combination of a 12inch infotainment screen and a 12.3-inch customisable digital instrument display ensure that the driver is aware of everything that is happening around them. The infotainment screen benefits from fixed buttons along the bottom edge that makes swapping between menus easy, while the digital instrument display can be configured in a number of ways to show the information most useful to the driver, including a large sat-nav map. CAR ON REVIEW My review car was a DS 7 Crossback E-Tense 225 Prestige (single motor), which looked stunning in its Platinum Grey metallic paintwork and 19-inch ‘Rome’ alloy wheels. Key features exclusive to Prestige trim include DS Inspiration Rivoli Interior Trim (black basalt grained leather seats), Electric Seats Pack (with massage function, passenger pneumatic lumbar memory), Advanced Safety Pack (Blind Spot Detection, Extended Traffic Sign Recognition and Driver Attention Alert), chrome roof rails, gloss black front grille, and a DS bonnet-mounted badge with chrome inserts.

When driven correctly, the DS 7 Crossback E-Tense is capable of fuel consumption as low as 1.3l/100kms on a WLTP combined driving cycle, while emitting as little as 31g/km of Co2 in the process. The 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine and single motor combination in my review car enabled the 0-100km/h sprint to be completed in just 8.9seconds, with this figure dropping to just 5.9-seconds in the 300bhp twin-motor variant. On the road, the mid-size SUV performs with great poise and precision, remaining comfortable and composed through corners, while the engine is pleasantly refined at idle and low revs. Standard Active Scan suspension uses a camera to read the road’s surface and adjust the suspension to suit. Using swift reactions and finesse to improve comfort on the move, this results in a unique, smooth driving experience. Finding a comfortable driving position behind the leather-bound multi-

New Opel Combo-E Cargo

Pricing and equipment announced for Irish market

O

pel has announced pricing and equipment for the new Combo-e Cargo light commercial vehicle in Ireland. The 100% electric Opel Combo-e compact van makes no compromises on functionality, comfort or safety. Available in Edition and Sportive trims, the Combo-e boasts a range of up to 275km from a single charge and offers up to 3.3m3 cargo space, 800kg payload and a 750kg towing capacity. Retailing from €34,395

plus delivery, or from €28,000 ex-VAT, the new emissions-free van is now available to order. For B2B customers, SEAI grants may be available to qualifying businesses. SEAI provides grant supports towards the purchase of N1 category electric vehicles for business and public entities. N1 category vehicles are typically small goods carrying vans with a technically permissible maximum mass not exceeding 3500kg. A maximum grant of

€3,800 is available for qualifying BEV N1 category when purchased commercially. See https://www.seai.ie/busines s-and-public-sector/ev-forbusiness/grants-andsupports/ for details. James Brooks, Managing Director at Opel Ireland, said: “The all-electric Opel Combo-e Cargo continues the expansion of our zeroemission light commercial vehicle offer. The Vivaro-e, just crowned Irish Van of the Year 2022, is already Ireland’s best-selling electric

van in an emerging market. Shortly, we will also launch the Movano-e, thus electrifying our entire LCV portfolio.” The newest addition to Opel’s all-electric LCV portfolio is available in Ireland in two trims. The Edition trim retails from €34,395 plus delivery and includes cruise control with speed limiter, electric parking brake, spare wheel, solid bulkhead, manual air conditioning, front passenger bench seat, folding passenger seat back table tray, DAB radio,

touchscreen and 3.5” colour instrument display, Bluetooth, USB connectivity, a left-hand side sliding door and automatic headlamp control. The Sportive trim, from €36,395 plus delivery, or from €29,627 ex-VAT, gains front fog lamps, rear parking distance sensors, body coloured door handles, body colour front and rear bumpers. The new Combo-e covers up to 275km on a single charge of its 50kWh lithiumion battery. It accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in

only 11.7 seconds, while the electronically controlled maximum speed is 130 km/h; the perfect balance for urban and motorway driving. A sophisticated regenerative braking system further increases efficiency. Customers can “refill” the battery to 80 per cent in around 30 minutes at public charging stations. The battery with 216 cells and 18 modules is packaged under the floor, so that it does not compromise usage of the cargo area or passenger compartment.

In this location, the battery lowers the centre of gravity as well, which benefits cornering and wind stability even when fully loaded, while also contributing to increased driving pleasure. Opel’s entire light commercial vehicle portfolio will be available in full electric in 2022. By 2024, Opel will offer an electrified version of every passenger car and LCV model. By 2028, Opel will be purely powered by electric in Europe.

MERCEDES LAUNCH ALL-ELECTRIC SUV

M

ercedes-Benz has increased their tally of all-electric SUVs with the launch of their new EQS SUV, first versions of which will arrive here in the first quarter of 2023. Its introduction sees it share space with the existing all-electric EQS saloon and the conventionally powered S-Class on the upper tier of the Mercedes-Benz model range. As might be expected, the new EQS SUV is equipped with all of the advanced features and characteristics found in its two siblings save for the option of an additional third row of seating that boosts passenger carrying up to seven persons. Distinctly Mercedes-Benz, the newcomer echoes EQS in its features and appointments, housed within a design that sees the subtle comingtogether of muscular power and timeless elegance. Inside, its extra headroom gives it a more spacious, airier feel. Tech elements, trim levels, passenger comfort and safety provisions compare to those of its siblings in terms of functionality with materials and fit-and-finish of an expected high standard. At the top end, an eye-catching dash-mounted infotainment Hyperscreen is a dominant feature. Other welcome inclusions are a large stowage compartment below the centre console and a predominance of other useful storage spaces. Three variants are offered: an EQS 450 (in rear wheel and all-wheel drive formats) and an EQS 580 4MATIC allwheel-drive version (with motors on front and rear axles) Powering both are MercedesBenz’s own-manufactured batteries

with a claimed ‘better charging’ performance and ‘significantly higher’ energy density. Helped by its lightweight components and Cd value from 0.20, the EQS SUV has an operating range of up to 660 kms (WLTP) and a power output of up to 400 kW. Electrical consumption is 2318.6kWh/100km (for the 450+) and 2420kWh/100km (for the 580 4MATIC+). Available fast-charging systems include one that delivers an extra 250kms (WLTP) power in just 15 minutes. Featured on all-wheel drive versions is an off-road drive mode that raises the suspension and alters the powertrain's behaviour. Adjustable air suspension and a rear-axle steering system are standard. In addition to its numerous infotainment features and options, the EQS SUV comes with a mix of goodies that includes wireless device connectivity; standard and optional driver-assistance tech; lane-keeping assist; blind-spot monitoring; collision prevention systems; and warnings and automated interventions that protect against unintended hazards. Commenting, Ciaran Allen, sales manager for Mercedes-Benz passenger cars in Ireland said: “the EQS SUV will be a welcome addition to our model line-up, ideal for that high-end clientele whose requirements are for a vehicle that combines deluxe driving and surprising agility with deep-down power and off-road performance.” Prices will be available closer to its arrival here. “Nonetheless, it is likely they will fall near to or north of EQS and S-Class models,” he added.

New Mercedes-Benz C-Class – Oozes sophistication

By BREDA CORRIGAN • www.motoringmatters.ie

T

ree decades since its original introduction, the Mercedes-Benz C-Class has proven its success with just under 11 million units sold worldwide. In fact, the predecessor to the new C-Class sold over 2.5 million alone since its launch in 2014, so the new (sixth-generation) C-Class has a lot to live up to. The underlying platform is the same, but everything that the new C-Class driver interacts with is all-new. It is slightly longer, wider and lower than what went before it, but the cabrearwards profile ensures that the new C-Class looks like the bigger E-Class from a distance, and not too dissimilar to the super-luxurious S-Class limousine that sits at the top of the Mercedes-Benz saloon car family tree.

ENGINE & TRIM VARIANTS Also new to the C-Class are a range of mildlyelectrified drivetrains. Petrol engines consist of 1.5-litre and 2.0-litre units with the former available with 170bhp or 204bhp (badged C180 and C200 respectively), while the latter produces 258bhp and is badged as a C300. Diesel power comes courtesy of a 2.0-litre turbo-

charged unit with 163bhp (badged C200d), 200bhp (badged C220d) or 265bhp (badged C300d). All engines come with a 9G-Tronic automatic transmission as standard. A major advantage of the mild-hybrid engines in the new C-Class is the refinement on offer, with the stop/start systems almost imperceptible, and the

engine shutting off at high speeds (and times of low resistance) quite frequently, thereby resulting in outstanding fuel efficiency. The new C-Class is available in a choice of Avantgarde and AMG Line trim variants, with body styles consisting of a fourdoor saloon and a versatile estate.

TEST CAR My test car was a new C200d Saloon AMG Line, which was finished in graphite grey metallic paint with grey/black ARTICO leather seats and an AMG Night Package fitted as optional extras – priced at €280 and €838 respectively. A hugely comprehensive array of comfort, convenience, safety and infotainment features come as standard in Avantgarde trim, with key AMG Line features consisting of distinctive AMG Line bodystyling, AMG brushed stainless steel sports pedals with black rubber studs, sports suspension, larger brake discs on the front axle, flat-bottomed steering wheel, and sports seats. The AMG Night Package consists of 18” AMG 5-spoke light alloy wheels in highgloss black, AMG front apron and rear bumper trim in high-gloss black, black door mirror casings, heat insulating dark tinted rear glass, black window line trim, and a front grille with pins in high-gloss black for a distinctive sporty look. Producing 163bhp and 380Nm of torque, the refined and punchy engine in my test car can propel the C-Class saloon from 0-100km/h in just 7.7seconds, on its way to a top 42 MotorMarket

speed of 230km/h (where permitted). Fuel consumption as low as 4.2-litres per 100kms driven on a WLTP combined driving cycle is achievable, with an emissions figure of 120g/km leading to annual road tax of just €190. The C-Class has admirable handling characteristics, with it being capable and entertaining in equal measure. Accurate steering, a strong brake pedal feel, and very little body lean in corners ensure that the car is fun to drive. The C-Class is a quiet motorway companion at cruising speed, with little in

the way of engine or road noise, while the standard nine-speed automatic transmission shifts through the gears in a fuss-free manner. OUTSTANDING DESIGN The new C-Class is a very handsome car in every respect. The vertical taillights of its predecessor have been replaced by striking horizontal lights, with slimmer headlights and a distinctive new front grille providing terrific visual drama when viewed headon. It is easy to find a comfortable driving position in the C-Class as all models

benefit from multiple adjustment options for the seat and for the multifunction steering wheel. There are not many physical buttons on the dashboard of the C-Class, but touch-sensitive climate controls are constantly displayed in the lower section of the infotainment screen, rather than hidden in a menu. In place of traditional analogue dials, the new C-Class has a crystal-clear 12.3-inch digital display that can display driving and media information, along with navigation information, if selected. An additional large

‘IRISH LEGENDS’ Motoring Racing Championship

portrait-oriented 11.9-inch central information screen can be operated by touch, voice or via the touchsensitive controls on the leather-bound steering wheel. Voice control is included on all trim levels and has the capability to recognise requests with great efficiency, and can do anything from changing the interior temperature, to programming a location into the navigation, and can even tell a joke when asked to do so. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration comes as standard, and there is wireless phone charging, along with two C-USB ports in the centre console to charge devices. IMPRESSIVE SPACE & COMFORT Thanks to a 25mm longer wheelbase, passenger space within the C-Class saloon is generous, and there are decent sized rear door bins to put bottles in, plus a map pocket on the back of each front seat. The rear seat has a practical 40/20/40 split folding configuration as standard, with 455-litres of cargo space on offer behind the rear seats. Inspired by the cabin of

the new S-Class, the C-Class’ dash is a masterpiece of creativity that adds a real sense of occasion to every journey. Once settled into the nicely sculpted seats with ergonomically-designed headrests, occupants will truly appreciate the massive effort that Mercedes-Benz has made in terms of comfort, space and safety. Small touches such as the backlit air vents add a feeling of tactility and substance to a largely digitised cabin, with all major controls located within easy reach of the driver at all times. The reach and rakeadjustable steering wheel incorporates a new design with two spokes per side, and slim stalks behind on the column for indicating and selecting drive function. The spokes each have their own bank of touchpads to control functions – for example, to increase the volume of the audio you simply slide your left thumb up and down, with the instrument cluster controlled by the top-right wheel spoke. Driver comfort and safety features include distance assist, steering assist, lane keeping assist, improved surround sensors, emergency braking

functions, and a feature that can detect and raise the body height in anticipation of an impending collision. High Performance LED headlamps are standard while optional items include a host of passenger comfort, safety and wellness features already familiar in the S-Class and other MercedesBenz models. VERDICT & PRICING Buyers in the miniexecutive car market want a car that looks cool, is packed with the latest technology, is terrific to drive, and has a sensible range of engines that are economical and refined. The good news is that, with the new C-Class, Mercedes-Benz has delivered on all of the above, and more. In terms of interior displays, build quality, ride comfort, refinement, and elegant design, the new C-Class remains a class leader in my mind. Pricing for the new Mercedes-Benz C-Class saloon starts at €56,425 with my test car specification priced at €63,330 (including optional extras outlined). The new C-Class Estate is priced from €65,120. All prices are quoted excluding dealer and delivery charges.

F

ollowing up on an article written last summer that reported on a Motor Racing Championship known as ‘Irish Legends’ that is contested over 7 rounds, both north and south of the border, we’ve learnt that the Richardson brothers of Mount Merrion Cars and Stillorgan Motor Company are running at the front of the field again for 2022. Two rounds have now been raced and the championship standings show Geoff at the top of the table with Greg closely behind. This makes their dad Ernie (who is always the first to arrive and last to leave the racing paddock!) very proud. Ernie himself has accomplished motor racing success over the years. Racing at the most recent round in Mondello was fierce with the top-5 drivers separated by less than a second! It’s racing like this that has the ‘Irish Legends’ a very popular race amongst spectators and others alike and is seeing an ever growing grid of cars every season, with no less than 17 cars lining up this year. The next event will be raced at the extremely fast and open circuit of Bishops Court, Downpatrick, Northern Ireland on May 22nd, where both Greg and Geoff will have their sights on more silverware. ‘Keep the pedal to the metal’ boys, and we at MotorMarket wish you safe and successful racing for the remainder of the season.

DID YOU KNOW?? Mercedes-Benz # The brand was founded by Karl Benz and Gottlieb Daimler. It was originally known as Daimler Benz, and first marketed by Daimler Motoren Gesellschaft (DMG) in 1901. # The Mercedes Benz is named after Mercedes Jellinek, daughter of the automobile entrepreneur, Emil Jellinek who worked with DMG, and was an excellent marketing strategist. Her Spanish name translated to “mercy.” The company later went on to have the “Mercedes” name trademarked 1902. # In 1899, Jellinek participated in the Nice Race Week under the pseudonym, Monsieur Mercédès. This was the start of the legend of Mercedes Benz on the racing track. # Gottlieb Daimler is credited for running and winning the first ever motorsport event in 1894. # The logo of the Mercedes Benz is synonymous with luxury and quality. The three point star enclosed in a circle was designed by Gottlieb Daimler. It symbolises the use of Daimler engines on land, at sea and in the air. # At one point the company considered a change in the design of the star to include a fourth point that would signify space. However, they decided against it. # One of the 40 facts about Mercedes Benz that would interest you is that, while the triangular star dominated the design, the logo has changed over the last century. For several decades it included the name Mercedes Benz. 43 MotorMarket

MG 5 EV is big on value

W

ith sales of estate cars accounting for around 10% of the Irish new car market at present, it looks like the revitalised MG brand has timed the launch of their MG5 Estate perfectly. Given the fact that the car comes exclusively with a fully-electric powertrain makes the new MG5 even more appealing to motorists looking to make the move to an EV (Electric Vehicle). The brand says the MG5’s bodystyle offers superior aerodynamics and better handling, which is ideal for drivers who value maximum driving efficiency, spaciousness and driving dynamics. The relatively low stance of the MG5, with its water-cooled battery pack integrated into the car’s chassis, provides the car with an extremely low centre of gravity. As is the norm with electric cars, there is the usual instant acceleration from the moment the accelerator pedal is pressed, and this makes the car easy to drive around town, while there is enough oomph for building speed quickly when joining a motorway. MG’s engineers have put an emphasis on comfort, and the compliant suspension does a great job of ensuring the car remains composed when traversing rutted road surfaces and imperfections. The cabin of the MG5 is spacious and feels well made, while the 8” touchscreen media system looks smart and is easy to

navigate around. Visibility from within the car is very good, and the relatively large windows make the cabin feel even more spacious and inviting. VERDICT, PRICING & WARRANTY Overall, the new MG5 EV Long Range is a roomy estate car with a familyfriendly interior, and low running costs, while a respectable battery range, good levels of standard equipment and outstanding value for money will make the MG5 a popular choice in the estate car market going forward. But hit them at 60 km/h, and that chance drops to just 10%. The campaign shows the danger of speeding by small amounts. The kind of speeding some drivers do without even realising. As part of the campaign we commissioned an original song by Irish recording artist Cathy Davey. As our driver nudges their speed up. Moving from 50 km/h to 60 km/h, it’s harder and harder for the singer to keep up with the things that appear on the road. “When you’re going too fast, you can’t keep up with the road”. “Slow down”. study 2020 shows there has been a significant increase in the perceived acceptability of speeding compared to previous years. Between 2014 and 2019, approximately 24% of drivers through it was acceptable to exceed 50 km/h speed limits by more than 10 km/h, in 2020 this rose to 34%. Between 2014 and 2019, approximately 18% of drivers through it was acceptable to exceed 100 km/h speed limits by more than 10 km/h, in 2020 this rose to 34%. Our analysis of available coronial files data for 2013-2017 found that: Of the driver and motorcycle driver fatalities with a record of their actions leading up to the collision (n = 387), 25% (n = 95) were exceeding a safe speed. Exceeding a safe speed refers to driving above the speed limit or driving at a speed that is too high for the road/conditions. The pre-crash report that looks at excessive speed in 867 fatal collisions

2008-2012 shows: • excessive speed was a contributory factor in 1 in 3 fatal collisions between 2008 and 2012. This may not have been the sole cause of the collision. • of this number 19% cited excessive speed as the sole contributory factor. • of the 322 people killed in speedrelated collisions, 158 were drivers, 49 were motorcyclists and 100 were passengers.

The 2018 free speed survey shows • 52% of car drivers breaking the speed limit on urban roads • 27% of car drivers breaking the speed limit on rural roads • 23% of cars speeding on motorways • 44% of cars were speeding on dual carriageways Our campaign highlights and dramatises the consequences of breaking the speed limit, even by a small amount.
