n September of last year I had the 208 five door hatchback on test and was tremendously impressed with the car. It was powered by the 1.4 litre diesel engine driving a five speed manual gearbox. The test covered extensive motorway driving, as well as country, suburban and city roads. I was therefore greatly looking forward to driving the 2008 version. When I collected the 2008, I was told that it was powered by an all new, three cylinder, petrol engine. It too was linked to a five speed manual transmission. This engine was naturally aspirated, with a turbocharged version under development for introduction early next year.

Compared to the 1.4 diesel in the five door hatchback 208, the 1.2 petrol engine has a power output of 60 kW versus 50 kW for the diesel, but its torque delivery is 118 Nm against the 160 Nm of the diesel. Performance, velocity wise is surprisingly similar however. The 2008 has a top speed of 169 kph (105 mph) compared to 163 kph (101 mph), for the diesel and both engines deliver a 0-100 kph acceleration time of 13.5 seconds. The diesel has a far more frugal fuel consumption, with an EU testing standards, Combined cycle fuel consumption of 74 mpg (3.8 lt/100 km), compared to 57 mpg (4.9
lt/100 km) for the 1.2 petrol engine. As a result exhaust emissions are just 98 gm/km, for the diesel powered 208 hatchback, compared to 114 gm/km for the 1.2 petrol powered 2008. However, the distributors are confidant that when the turbocharged 1.2 petrol engine is launched, it will have emissions of 99 gm/km. To be quite honest I had my doubts about this three cylinder, 1.2 litre petrol engine from the start, but as the test programme progressed I became more accustomed to it. Fortunately the circumstances were such that on the second day of

the test I had to make an unplanned 200 miles (321 km) return motorway journey, which helped to greatly impress me as far as the car’s overall performance. With four adults and luggage aboard, it cruised quite effortlessly at the legal maximum speeds on the motorway, with adequate power in reserve for acceleration when needed. The power deliver was smooth and virtually silent, providing a comfortable and relaxing journey. Being higher than the 208, the 2008 also gives an excellent view of the road ahead and the scenery all around. After the motorway stint, the rest of the test programme was based on city and suburban driving. By the time the test period came to an end, I had become thoroughly accustomed to the petrol engine. However, having said that, if I was buying a 2008 for my own use, I would opt for contd. on page 6

one powered by one of the three diesel engines on offer. When the turbocharged 1.2 petrol engine becomes available I may then change my current preference for a diesel, if I am sufficiently impressed with the overall performance of the petrol engine. From a driving point of view, the the seats are well proportioned and comfortable. The driver’s seat adjusts for reach, height and backrest angle. The front passenger seat adjusts for reach and backrest angle. The electrically power assisted steering is geared to give 2.8 turns from lock to lock. The small diameter steering wheel gives an excellent view of the instrument panel ahead of the driver and adjusts for reach and height. The instrument binnacle has two large round analogue dials, with white lettering on a black background. That on the left is the tachometer, with a matching speedometer on the right. Between the two is a digital information panel, that also shows the speed in large clear figures. I find this particularly useful, as the figures on the speedometer
are rather small, so you have to take your eyes off the road for a longer period to look at them, whereas the large digital figure is easy to see instantly, without having to take your eyes off the road ahead. This is particularly useful on motorways, where overall speeds are higher. In the lower left hand corner of the binnacle there is an engine temperature gauge, while in the lower right hand corner there is the fuel level gauge. In the centre of the facia, there is a large digital touch screen that controls a lot of the electronic applications like the audio system, satellite navigation where fitted, mobile telephone etc. There are further controls
on the horizontal arms of the steering wheel for audio and telephone associated operations. Included in the Active specification are electric front windows, cruise control, remote controlled central locking, automatic headlamps and rear parking assist. The rear seat backrest is divided 60/40 and folds flat onto the seat cushion to provide additional luggage space. The two outer seating positions have ISOFix fittings for child safety seats. Normal luggage space, when all seats are in use, is 0.360 cubic metres, which is an improvement on the five door hatchback, which only has 0.285 cubic metres.
A Spacesaver spare wheel is provided in a well below the luggage floor. The driver’s handbook quotes a maximum towing weight for braked trailers of 780 kg and 560 kg for unbraked trailers. However, if you have towing in mind remember that you will need a full size tyre. I must admit to being surprised by the quoted towing weights, which are heavier than those for the 208 hatchback, even though the hatchback was powered by the 1.4 diesel, which has a superior torque output to the naturally aspirated 1.2 litre petrol engine. The unladen weights and gross vehicle weights are also practically identical for both the hatchback 208 and the 2008 mpv. Overall I found the ride and roadholding to be good, making the 2008 relaxing and a pleasure to drive. The servo assisted braking system uses ventilated discs at the front and plain discs at the back. It has all the modern safety systems like anti-lock, electronic brake force distribution, emergency brake assist, plus an electronic stability programme. Measured by EU testing standards, the fuel consumption of the naturally aspirated 1.2 litre petrol engine is : Urban cycle 6.0 lt/100 km (47 mpg) - Extra urban cycle 4.3 lt/100 km (65 mpg) - Combined cycle 4.9 lt/100 km (57 mpg. Routine servicing is required every 20,000 km (12,500 miles) or once a year, whichever comes first. Peugeot offer a three years unlimited mileage warranty, with three years paint cover, two years roadside assistance and twelve years antiperforation cover. The recommended retail price, for the 1.2 petrol version in Active specification, excluding delivery and associated charges, is currently €19,620.
