FIRST EVER RANGE ROVER FOR AUCTION This original Range Rover will be auctioned at Salon Prive, to be held at Syon House in London, on the 4th September. The Range Rover story begins in the 1960s, when Rover acknowledged the demand for a new, more recreational type of off-road vehicle and so development began in 1967 headed by Charles Spencer King. This car was built between 24th November and 17th December 1969, before being registered on 2nd January 1970, nearly six months before the official launch date of the Range Rover. The first owner of the car was Michael Furlong, the producer of two promotional films for the model. In 1975 the car, by this time resprayed in Bahama Gold, passed onto a new owner. Changes to registrations, as well as colour, meant that chassis number 001 was lost for a number of years, passing through another owner, until discovered by the current vendor in the early 1990s.

What followed was a professional, six year ground up restoration, both bodily and mechanically, executed to an exceptional standard, as well as taking it back to its original Olive Green colour. Unusually, the vehicle retains all its matching numbers components; chassis, engine, gearbox, axles, as well as the original aluminium bonnet and original body shell. In 1997 the DVLA reissued Range Rover 001 with its original registration number YVB 151H. It is estimated that it could go for between £100,000 and £140,000.

e have had a Kia Rio estate car in our family since 2004. It serves us well and it gives an average fuel consumption of around 34 mpg (8.3 lt/100 km). Originally it was bought brand new by my youngest son and when he moved on to a sporty open two seater roadster a few years later, my wife and I took it over as our family car. I love its styling and its light grey interior and still get a great deal of driving satisfaction from it. It has taken us all over the country and across the Irish Sea to Britain to visit members of the family who are now living and working there. However, as it has the basic specification it does not have electric windows, which both my wife and I find a bit annoying and its low sporty build is now becoming a bit less comfortable as old age begins to catch up on us. Recently my road test programme for the Kia Soul coincided with a planned visit to Britain to visit my two sons who are now both resident in the UK. The planned route took us from Malahide to Belfast, where we got the Stena Line ferry to Cairnryan. From Cairnryan we drove across south west Scotland and northern England to Gateshead, where my youngest son is currently living. After spending a week in Gateshead we drove south to Camberley in Berkshire, where my eldest son lives. Whilst in southern England I took the opportunity to visit the Haynes International Motor Museum in Sparkford, Somerset. Our return journey from Camberley was to Holyhead in Wales, where we got the Stena Line ferry back to Dublin port. The test thus covered a wide variety of roads and traffic conditions, from motorways, dual carriageways, city and suburban traffic to narrow and twisting country lanes. It also offered the opportunity to access the Kia Soul as a comfortable touring car and a practical every day family car. I am delighted to say that it

passed all the various tests with distinction. The journey from Malahide to Belfast Ferry Port, usually takes about two hours. It is mainly motorway all the way and the Kia Soul diesel cruised along with an effortless ease at 120 kph (75 mph). The engine was smooth and quiet in most gears, making the car a relaxing pleasure to drive. The large exterior rear view mirrors and the internal rear view mirror give a clear picture of all the traffic approaching from behind. The leather covered steering wheel has an excellent high quality feel and the steering itself is smooth and effortless. The higher build of the Soul also makes it more comfortable and relaxing to drive in both city and suburban traffic, as well as on fast motorways. The journey from Cairnryan to Gateshead normally takes about four hours, cruising at around 60 mph (96 kph). I have done it in three and a half hours in a Volkswagen Golf GT with a turbocharged 1.4 litre engine and a six speed gearbox. On this trip there was a lot of large trucks and other traffic on the road, so cruising at 60 mph was not a good option, as you would be permanently stuck behind a lot of slow moving heavy traffic, making it difficult to pass. The best option was to use the middle and right hand lane, where these were provided and to keep moving at 75 mph (120 kph). In spite of the hold-ups, slow moving sections and large volume of traffic on the roads, we managed the Cairnryan to Gateshead journey in

around three hours. A family car needs to have an adaptable luggage space. The Soul has 0.354 cubic meters of covered space when all five seats are in use and this can be expanded to 3.167 cubic metres when the rear seat backs are folded, the parcels shelf removed and only the two front seats are needed. Below the luggage floor there is a large plastic tray, divided into three compartments, which is very handy for carrying smaller items. The Spacesaver spare wheel is stored below this tray. The two outer rear seating positions are equipped with ISOfix fittings for child safety seats. The rear seat backrest is split 60/40 offering a range of options when both passengers and luggage needs to be carried. The Kia Soul is thus perfectly suited to families with young children, as

well as to older people who may have grown up children and grandchildren. The higher build makes it easier to fasten small children into their safety seats, or release them when the journey is over and it is also more comfortable for older people getting in or out. All this versatility helps to make it a highly practical and versatile family car, for young families and older people alike. In addition to the above, if the need arises, the Kia Soul diesel can tow braked trailers/caravans of up to 1300 kg in weight, or unbraked trailers of up to 550 kg. It can also carry up to 70 kg on the roof in a suitable roof box or container. However, if you are thinking of towing a trailer, it may be advisable to get a full size spare wheel for the occasion. One important factor for any family car are its running costs. By EU testing standards, the Kia Soul diesel, with the six speed manual gearbox, delivers

46 mpg (6.1 lt/100 km) on the Urban cycle, 64 mpg (4.4 lt/100 km) on the Extra urban cycle, giving an average of 56 mpg (5.0 lt/100 km) on the Combined cycle. Most vehicles I have tested do not manage to deliver as good a fuel consumption as suggested by the EU testing cycle figures. However, in spite of the speed, congestion and hold-ups, this Soul diesel gave an overall fuel consumption of 51 mpg (5.51 lt/100 km). That is impressive! Its exhaust emissions are 132 gm/km, putting it in Irish road tax band B, with a current annual

charge of €225. That certainly makes it attractive as a family car today. From a driving point of view, all the instruments and controls are well laid out for comfort and ease of use. The hooded binnacle behind the steering wheel contains two large, round, analogue instruments, with black backgrounds, white lettering and red needles. The tachometer is on the left and the speedometer on the right. Between them there is a digital information panel, also with a black background and white lettering, that displays a

variety of selectable information, like the mileage, average fuel consumption etc. The steering wheel has selectors for things like the cruise control, mobile telephone and certain operations of the audio system. The large upper panel in the centre console contains a screen that shows the time and other selectable items associated with the audio system. The smaller panel below it has the selectors for operations connected with the heating and ventilation system. The gearlever falls conveniently to hand in the centre tunnel and has a smooth

On the return journey we missed a turning on the motorway, so we had to make a substantial detour to get back onto the main route. he latest generation Ford Mustang will go on sale in the United States towards the end of this year. Since it was introduced in the United States in the latter half of 1964 around 9.2 million examples have been sold in the US to date. A further 161,000 have been sold in other markets around the world. Unfortunately up to now there has never been a right hand drive version. That is all about to change, as engineers are currently carrying out tests and development work on a right hand drive version of the latest model. 2015 SPRING CLASSIC International Motor Sports Limited has announced that the 2015 Spring Classic will be based at the Vale Resort Hotel, near Cardiff, over the weekend of the 25th and 26th April. Details of the full two day, non competitive route will be published when entries open later in the year. IMS, though, has confirmed that the itinerary will again include a magical mix of great driving roads, plus a number of cultural, motor sport and other places of interest, all chosen specifically to provide a memorable weekend of classic motoring. The MSA Spring Classic is open to all owners of classic cars that are more than 20 years old and has a capacity

of just 100 entries. With so much to see and do, last yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s tour boasted a full entry and even had a waiting list of disappointed drivers. Indeed the cars brushing off their winter cobwebs earlier this year, included a lexicon of true classics from the golden era of the British sports car industry. Among these were number of iconic makes including Alvis, Aston Martin, Austin Healey, Bentley, Jaguar, Lotus, MG, Morgan, Sunbeam, Triumph and TVR. They were joined by classics from right around the globe, with brands such as Porsche and Mercedes representing Europe, while Ford Mustangs and Chevrolet Corvettes added a little American V8 thunder to proceedings
