NEW MG ZS – Unplug and Play 50kW public charger. Located behind the MG badge in the front grille, the charging port is easily accessible from either side of the car.

F

ollowing a 16-year absence from the car market, the iconic MG badge is back in Ireland. The once Britishowned and now Chinese-owned brand has three nicely-appointed electrified models available on the Irish market – the MG ZS EV (SUV), MG HS (SUV) Plug-In Hybrid (PHEV) and the MG 5 EV (Estate Car). TRULY AFFORDABLE SUV The MG ZS EV is a truly affordable family friendly electric compact SUV, designed for those who want all of the advantages of emissions free driving without the compromise on style and practicality. The MG ZS EV couples stunning design with a clean, efficient, and dynamic electric powertrain. With a combined WLTP certified range of up to 263 kilometres on a combined driving cycle or up to 372 kilometres in city-only driving, and rapid

By DECLAN GLYNN www.motoringmatters.ie relatively small battery means fairly short charging times, so the ZS can be fully charged from

empty in as little as six-and-a-half hours from a 7kW wall box, or 40 minutes to 80% charge from a

charging capability, families can enjoy the freedom to go anywhere in an electric car. ATTENTION-GRABBING PRICE With a starting price of €28,995 (including Government grants currently available), the MG ZS EV’s price grabs attention, as it is cheap enough to make potential buyers of rival brands sit up and take notice. The MG ZS EV is powered by a 44.5kWh lithium-ion battery which is covered under MG’s standard 7-year warranty. This

NEW MG ZS continued from page 1 CAR ON REVIEW My review car was an MG ZS Exclusive, which struck a pose in its Dynamic Red metallic paint. Other colour options currently available are Sky Blue metallic, Black Pearl metallic and Arctic White (non-metallic), all of which work well in highlighting the sporty SUV silhouette of the ZS. Producing 141bhp (143PS) and a healthy 353Nm of instant torque, the MG ZS offers peppy performance from the get-go, with a 0-100km/h time of 8.5-seconds and a top speed of 140km/h on offer. The interior of the MG ZS is well laid out and functional, while passenger space is in plentiful supply. A 448-litre boot capacity offers around 60-litres more than the typical compact SUV, with the added benefit of a splitlevel boot for larger items like suitcases, prams and leisure equipment. Additionally, the folding rear seats in the MG ZS allow for the transportation of bicycles or large, bulky items that the boot alone can’t accommodate, with up to 1,100-litres of space available when the need arises. Managed by MG’s Intelligent Battery Temperature Control system, the water-cooled battery pack in the ZS is insulated from external temperature variations, delivering the optimum power and range whatever the weather. Designed to achieve dynamic handling and chassis feel, the ZS EV’s powertrain has been intelligently packaged to achieve a low centre of gravity. Housed underneath the passenger compartment as part of the ZS EV’s flat-floor architecture, the balanced distribution of weight keeps the ZS EV planted to the road through the corners. VERDICT & WARRANTY With a famous reputation built on sporty and distinctive cars, the MG ZS EV is both affordable and a joy to drive. Built to the highest standards in their state-of-the-art manufacturing plants, MG is so confident of the quality and reliability of the new MG ZS EV that they give it a 7 year manufacturer’s warranty.

BROTHERS IN ARMS

W

he Irish Legends Motor Racing Championship is a hotly contested series. The cars that the grid of seasoned competitors drive are 400kg featherweights that run a 1200cc Suzuki motorcycle engines and are capable of very high speeds and have an accelerator rate of 0-100kmg in 3 seconds! Two of the championships top drivers are brothers Geoff and Greg Richardson of the Mount Merrion Cars and Stillorgan Motor Group. Both drivers have vast

motorracing experience, a skill they have inherited from their father Ernie, a former regular competitor at the Kildare circuit in Mondello. The recent Mondello 500 event was won by Geoff with Greg also occupying a podium step and the 2020 Championship honours also went to Geoff. He car now features the No. 1 plate for 2021. The next round of this year’s fiercely fast circuit of Kirkistown, Northern Ireland, is on the 25th September. Best of luck boys!

Volvo Cars Reports Record H1 2021 Performance V

olvo Cars reported the best half-year results in terms of sales and operating profit in its 94-year history amid increasing demand for its cars across all regions. The half-year financial report showed the company achieved a revenue of 141 billion SEK, up 26 per cent, driven by strong demand and positive mix effects. Operating income was 13 billion SEK in the first six months of 2021, representing an operating margin of 9.4 per cent. Sales volumes rebounded 41 per cent compared to the pandemic-affected period in 2020, but the company also saw strong growth of 12 per cent compared to the first six months of 2019, a more relevant comparison without the pandemic disruption. The 12-month rolling sales volume is approximately 775,000 cars, just shy of the 800,000 target set 10 years ago. “The company continued to

grow strongly despite the industry-wide semiconductor shortage, but more importantly, we demonstrated that we are a leader of the ongoing transformation in the automotive industry,” said Håkan Samuelsson, chief executive of Volvo Cars. Volvo Cars aims to become the fastest transforming company in the sector and to be fully electric by 2030. The appeal of Volvo’s electric cars was demonstrated in the first half by the demand for its Recharge models. Sales of both its fully electric and plug-in hybrid cars grew significantly, now making up 25 per cent of the global volume. This is the highest electrification share as a proportion of total sales among traditional car makers. As part of the move towards full electrification, we launched our second fully electric model, the Volvo C40 Recharge. At the same time, we firmed up our strategy of online sales

to meet changing consumer behaviour. From now on, all fully electric models will be available exclusively through volvocars.com, and customers can order at their place of preference; from their home, at a Volvo studio, or together with a retailer. We are now operational with online sales in several markets, with transparent and flexible consumer offerings including care packages of service, wear and tear as well as insurance. Volvo Cars’ subscription offering, Care by Volvo, had a fivefold increase in the first six months to over 10,000 contracts. Securing sustainable batteries is key for Volvo Cars’ transformation. The company is therefore planning to join forces with Northvolt as a strategic partner for joint development and manufacturing of next generation battery cells.

To ensure focus on electrification, Volvo Cars is carving out its internal combustion engine operations into a new unit, Aurobay, in which Geely Holding will be a main shareholder. Through Aurobay, Volvo Cars will realise synergies as well as secure a

supply of competitive combustion engines for its hybrid powertrains until the company is fully electric. “Volvo Cars has a decadelong track record of successful transformation. The car industry is changing more than ever, and we have a strong

determination to be the fastest transformer,” said Håkan Samuelsson. In May, the Board announced that it is evaluating a possible initial public offering (IPO) on Nasdaq Stockholm. The evaluation process continues. Looking at the remaining

half year, Volvo Cars reiterates its full-year outlook. Unless supply of semiconductors improves, the company expects flat sales and revenue for the second half year, compared with the same period last year, despite strong customer demand.

Additional modes include Snow, Sand and Mud modes for times when the going gets tough. EXECUTIVE PLUS SPECIFICATION The new Santa Fe Plug-in Hybrid is available in just

one specification – Executive Plus – and comes generously-equipped with key features such as 19” alloy wheels, chrome exterior door handles, roof rails, power-folding mirrors, electric parking brake with hill hold facility, rear privacy glass, a 12.3” TFT supervision cluster, Nappa leather seats, suede headliner, power driver and passenger seats. It also features front and rear seat warmers, rear onetouch smart 3rd row seat entry, remote folding 3rd row seats, LED front and rear lights, full automatic airconditioning, rear airconditioning, front and rear parking sensors, gearbox paddle shift, rear camera with guidance system, space saver spare wheel, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity, satellite navigation, wireless phone charger, integrated 10.25” colour screen, Hyundai Bluelink (which allows owners to locate their car, check

The interior of the new Santa Fe Plug-in Hybrid feels more plush than before with luxurious Nappa leather and suede dominating the spacious cabin. There is 34mm more legroom for second-row passengers than in the previous generation, which has the added benefit of providing room for adults to sit in the third row as well. There are separate airconditioning controls and each seat gets a cup holder too. Boot space is generous, with 571-litres of space available when the two rearmost seats are folded into the boot floor, but this can be expanded to a cavernous 1,625-litres when all five rear seats are folded flat. TEST CAR My test car performed admirably on a variety of road surfaces, with an excellent suspension set-up engineered to tackle road imperfections with ease. The Santa Fe Plug-in Hybrid is blessed with

terrific driving dynamics and inspirational road-holding attributes, while Hyundai’s large SUV steers with poise and precision for added driving confidence. Straight line performance is excellent too, with a 0-100km/h sprint achievable in just 8.8seconds. Multiple convenient ways to charge the new Santa Fe Plug-in Hybrid include via a home wall box charger, a domestic socket or at a public charging station. When fully charged, an allelectric range of up to 58km’s is achievable, which is generally enough for urban driving and schoolrun commutes. Living Electric

IN ASSOCIATION WITH

How easy is it to make the switch? PAUL MARTIN - Electric car driver since 2016 “My dad said, why are you buying a milk cart…why would I invest in one of them, there is no point”, says Paul Martin, who purchased a second hand electric car in 2016. Globally, there are strong indications from energy market analysts and car manufacturers that mass market adoption of EVs is likely. Paul, who is originally from Waterford, lives with his wife Elaine and two children in Dublin. After a lot of discussion about what type of car to buy he was surprised by how many cynical comments he encountered when he decided to buy an electric vehicle. “There is a perception about second hand electric cars that you are buying something that will never charge but that is just not the case. They are really good value”. Paul spent a total of €11,000 after trading in his old Peugeot 204. “Our car was old and needed a new timing belt and tyres so we

thought about changing the car for a new one but not necessarily an electric car”. After researching everything on the market and looking at the price of tax, maintenance and running costs, the electric vehicle came out on top for Paul, who says, “we never spoke so much about a car in our lives and we are not car people."

GILLIAN GANNON Electric car driver since 2018 According to an SEAI survey completed in 2016, consumers who bought an electric car attributed the fuel cost savings as the number one reason for doing so. Gillian Gannon from Meath, who lives in Castleknock with her boyfriend Derek, is one of the people who decided to buy an electric vehicle. “We needed to get a new car anyway as we were using a very old banger…we also had a car that we brought home foolishly from Australia…as it turns out the Irish petrol doesn’t seem to work very well in an

Australian engine so when I was travelling down to Cork, didn’t the engine just give out altogether”. While Gillian was attracted to the EV by the enormous savings potential, she also attributes the Leonardo DiCaprio documentary ‘Before the Flood’ as having a massive impact on her boyfriend Derek. They traded in their Volkswagen Golf for a second hand EV at the cost of €9000. “This is very new to us, we are still learning how to be comfortable with the mileage and we are still learning how far we can actually go”. Driving an electric car is described as a complete lifestyle change. Paul Martin describes charging the car at night is “like asking yourself have I let the cat out”. It becomes a new way doing things. All drivers refer to the frustration when there is a broken charging point, a queue at the station or simply no chargers around. The biggest disadvantage according to Joe Durkan is that the fast charger infrastructure is not available nationwide. “West of the Shannon there are virtually no fast chargers still”, he argues.

Paul and his Electric vehicle

There is also the element of planning for long journeys. “You do watch your mileage a bit more because it is not as easy as going into a garage and filling it up, you still do have to go find a charging station”, says Gillian Gannon.

JOE DURKAN - Electric car driver since 2017 Joe Durkan is originally from Mayo but now lives in Longford and works in Sligo. He traded in his Hyundai IX35 for an Ioniq and says,

“Everybody was very interested in it. When my son made his Communion I spent the day driving family around for test drives”. Joe drives a lot as part of his job, averaging 30,000 to 40,000km per year. He bought the car only when he subconsciously felt that the EV cars on the market would suit his needs. “I am pushing the limit in the car I have at the moment to do what I need it to do”. The longest he has travelled with no charge is

Longford to Belmullet. When Joe talks to friends, “the potential savings that are there” are what they are most interested in. It is thought that by 2025 the capital cost of the EV is likely to be the same as other cars on the market. Although distance per charge is not a major issue for Joe, he is concerned about the car retaining its value. “In three years’ time when I would normally be looking to change a car, the

chances are that there will be far better EV’s out there which means the resale value of my car might not be all that good and I may be limited in my options”. However, most EV drivers agree that the electric car is still the way forward. Paul Martin says that, “For the future of my kid’s environment, it is still the way to go…If I am honest I do sometimes miss driving the manual but I would never go back to a diesel or petrol again”. NEW

NISSAN JUKE A Dynamic Revolution

N

issan pretty much invented the supermini-derived SUV/compact crossover class when it launched the first-generation Juke back in 2010. It offered buyers robust off-road styling and an elevated view of the road ahead, with the benefit of looking totally different to anything else on the road at that time. In fact, it is thanks to the commercial success of the original Nissan Juke that the market segment (often referred to as B-SUV) has become Europe’s biggest automotive market growth area.

PETROL-ONLY POWER Nissan has launched the second-generation Juke with a new chassis and a new engine, built on a Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance model platform. Whereas the previous Juke had a specially adapted chassis used only by Nissan, and was available with a choice of petrol and diesel engines, the new Juke is available with just one engine, with Nissan having ruled out diesel power for the car entirely. The sole petrol engine in the new Juke is a threecylinder turbo-charged 1.0litre unit with 114bhp. A

six-speed manual gearbox is standard, with the option of a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic (DCT) in all but the entry level trim level. There is no option to add all-wheel-drive, but that is not uncommon on small SUV’s such as the Juke. The new Juke combines the looks of an SUV and a coupé – just like the old model – and still has signature touches such as bold circular headlights. However, it now has Yshaped LED daytime running lights and Nissan’s distinctive V-motion grille to keep it in line with other models in the Nissan range,

while new wheel designs also feature. FIVE TRIM LEVELS The new Juke is available in a choice of five trim levels – XE, SV, SV Premium, SVE and N-Design – while 15 combinations of two-tone body colours mean you can express yourself like never before, with exciting interior colours to match for ultimate personalisation. Standard features across all trim levels include six airbags, Emergency E-Call System, ISOFIX, space saver spare wheel, Intelligent Emergency Braking with pedestrian and cyclist

By BREDA CORRIGAN www.motoringmatters.ie detection, Hill Start Assist, Intelligent Lane Intervention & Warning, air-conditioning, idle stop/start, DAB radio, Bluetooth with USB & AUX, 4.2” colour TFT screen, multifunction steering wheel with height adjustment, front & rear electric windows, 60/40 split-folding rear seat, front & rear LED lights with daytime runninglights, LED rear foglamps, and electric mirrors, along with many more comfort and convenience features. Moving up the trim levels will add even more in the line of desirable standard equipment, such as stylish alloy wheels (up to 19”), parking sensors, rear view camera, and privacy glass, along with a suite of advanced safety systems and high-tech features. TEST CAR My mid-spec Juke SV Premium DCT test car looked great in its striking Fuji Sunset Premium Metallic paintwork, with stylish 17” alloy wheels fitted as standard. The combination of sharp lines, dramatic lights and intriguing design accents provide the new Juke with a thoroughly modern and distinctive look, while sleek aerodynamics enable the new Juke to glide through the air for greater fuel

efficiency and ultimate refinement on the move. The new Juke’s interior looks and feels great, while its infotainment system is much better than the previous model’s. All new Juke’s get Nissan’s sleek new Monoform seats with a single-piece backrest – similar to those found in many sports cars – and this adds a real sense of sportiness to the new Juke’s cabin. The new Juke has 422litres of boot space with the rear seatbacks in place – an increase of 20% on the previous generation. It also comes with a handy adjustable boot floor that is easy to move up and down for greater practicality. With it in the raised position, there is enough space underneath to store the parcel shelf in the event that it needs to be removed to accommodate a bulky load.

quite agile, and this becomes evident on twisty country roads where the car feels very comfortable and confident. VERDICT, PRICING & WARRANTY Overall, the new Nissan Juke is good to drive, more spacious than its predecessor, and is right upto-date in terms of infotainment and safety systems. Pricing for the new Nissan Juke start at just €23,395, with my SV Premium DCT test car priced from €28,350. A comprehensive 3year/100,000km warranty comes as standard.

ON THE ROAD Producing 114bhp and 201Nm of torque, the Juke’s turbo-charged engine performs strongly around town and is capable of keeping up with fast-moving traffic on motorways too. There are three driving modes to choose from – Eco, Standard and Sport – and the Juke feels liveliest in the

latter mode, while fuel consumption as low as 6.1l/100km (46mpg) is achievable on a WLTP combine driving cycle. The new Juke has more athleticism and handling poise than the average compact crossover, retaining the zippy dynamic appeal that helped to mark out the original Juke as a car intended for more energetic and youthful drivers as well as older ones. A new-found level of ride sophistication makes the new Juke more comfortable and pleasant than its predecessor too. Excellent grip and progressive body control enables the new Juke to feel

NEW OPEL MOKKA-E – stands out from the crowd T

he new Opel Mokka-e is one of the newest entrants into the electric crossover/compact SUV market, and it brings with it stylish looks, a comfortable drive and low running costs. This is the secondgeneration Opel Mokka, but it shares little more than its name with its predecessor. Following on from the Corsa supermini and Vivaro van, the Mokka is the third model in the Opel line-up to be offered with a fully-electric powertrain, while being credited with being the first Opel to use the striking ‘Vizor’ front design. under the Corsa, as well as GROWN-UP & VERSATILE the Peugeot e-208/e-2008, As with the Corsa, the Mokka compact SUV aims to the new Citroën e-C4 and DS give buyers as much choice 3 Crossback E-Tense. as possible, because the As with these models, there is a 134bhp electric Mokka-e is sold alongside motor driving the front petrol and diesel variants. wheels, and a 50kWh Having recently driven battery is located under the the new Mokka SRI in 1.2floor between the front and litre petrol guise, I was impressed by how grown-up rear axles. and versatile the new CUSTOMISATION OPTIONS Mokka is. The new Mokka The motor, battery pack and platform in the Mokka-e possesses a flair and presence that immediately are all familiar, as these mark it out as being components are found

extraordinary and unlike anything else on the road, while a selection of visually distinctive alloy wheel options and a range of striking colours provide multiple customisation options – including a dynamic selection of colour options for the roof and bonnet. From the ‘Opel Vizor’ at the front, to the ‘floating roof’ architecture that flows in a single clean gesture to frame the side windows, the exterior design of the new Mokka is purposeful, distinctive and perfectly proportioned, while carefully-positioned ‘e’ badging sets the Mokka-e apart from its conventionally-powered siblings. The new Opel Mokka is 129mm shorter than its predecessor, but its wheels have been pushed right out to the corners, so the gap between them is a few millimetres longer than before, which translates into greater interior space and occupant comfort. It is also wider and lower for a more ground-hugging appearance, without sacrificing its SUV credentials. Opel has brought the new Mokka into the digital age with two large, highresolution displays that are housed within a wide,

sweeping dash panel. The large expanse of piano-black plastic trim provides the Mokka with an upmarket look, while overall cabin build quality is excellent. A sporty driving position, comfortable and supportive seats, along with terrific ergonomics and good visibility ensure that driving the new Mokka is as simple and joyous as possible. Boot space in the Mokkae is 40-litres less than that found in a conventionallypowered Mokka (310 v 350litres), but dropping the split-folding rear seatbacks will increase cargo space to 1,060-litres when the need arises. SRI & ELITE TRIM OPTIONS Available in SRI and Elite trim levels, the new Opel Mokka-e comes generously equipped no matter which trim is chosen. Common features include a flat-bottom leather steering wheel, a full complement of LED front and rear lights, DAB radio, Android Auto & Apple CarPlay, Opel Connect, 17” alloy wheels, high beam assist, electric mirrors, panoramic rear view camera, rear parking sensors, electronic climate control and a host of advanced safety systems. Upgrading to Elite trim 16 MotorMarket

adds jet-black leather upholstery, driver’s seat massage function, grey roof headliner, 17” bi-colour alloy wheels, solar absorbing windows, and side window mouldings with a bright chrome roof line and black belt line finisher. CAR ON REVIEW My Mokka-e Elite review car looked very stylish in its Matcha Green metallic paintwork with a contrasting black roof, mirror covers, and wheelarch and body moldings. Producing 134bhp and 260Nm of instant torque, the Mokka-e can complete a 0100km/h sprint in just 8.7seconds. To achieve that figure, the car must be in ‘Sport’ mode, as it is only in this setting where the driver is able to access the electric motor’s full power output. Sport mode also makes

the throttle more responsive, but it does come at the expense of predicted battery range. Eco mode performs the opposite function by softening acceleration and reducing power to boost range. However, in everyday driving, Normal mode will be the preferred choice for many drivers. Brake regeneration is operated by way of a button located beside the automatic gear control lever, and it is a very effective way to reduce speed and increase battery range at the same time. With a range of up to 324km’s from a full battery, the Mokka-e is an easy car to live with on a daily basis, with a 30-minute charge time achievable (15% to 80%) at a public rapid charger. A standard

domestic wall box charger can charge the battery from 0%-100% in just over seven and a half hours, so charging the car overnight will be the preferred choice for most owners. PRICING The new Opel Mokka-e is a very desirable, relaxing and well-equipped fullyelectric compact SUV and is sure to be a big sales success for the revitalised Opel brand. Pricing for the Opel Mokka-e starts at just €33,038 (SRI), with the range-topping Elite model priced at €34,444 (inclusive of a VRT rebate and SEAI grant for private buyers - t’s & c’s apply). Opel’s comprehensive 3-year warranty and 8-year roadside assistance package comes as standard.

hen the original SEAT Ateca compact SUV was launched in September 2016, it was SEAT’s first entry into the lucrative SUV market. The Spanish car manufacturer knew that the Ateca had to be exceptionally good to make an impact in the crowded compact SUV segment, and thankfully the Ateca succeeded in achieving this. With a winning combination of style, space, quality, driving enjoyment and value, the new SEAT Ateca earned the title of ‘Ireland’s Best Value SUV.’ DESIGN EVOLUTION digital lives with them into The new SEAT Ateca for the vehicle, and also when 2021 brings a design out of the car. evolution to the compact The Ateca offers SUV thanks to its more connectivity powered by the expressive exterior design latest infotainment language, and its updated technology, with Full Link interior. By BREDA CORRIGAN www.motoringmatters.ie the SUV has grown slightly as a result of redesigned front and rear bumpers, but remains as wide and tall as the previous model. The front gains a new face that introduces the new SEAT design language, formed in part with the inclusion of Full LED headlights. The distinctive SEAT signature design remains,

and as you look along the side of the vehicle, its profile continues to convey confidence and dynamism with precise lines and flowing forms blending perfectly together. At the rear, the design is chiseled to emphasise the Ateca’s powerful shoulders and hide its impressive 510litre load capacity. The introduction of Full LED rear lights with dynamic indicators complements the look of the SUV and make it more attractive. Simulated exhaust pipes add an edge to the design and bring added intrigue to the rear, and the Ateca’s name is now embossed in a new brand handwriting style. MODEL AND ENGINE CHOICES The new SEAT Ateca model line-up consists of SE, SE Plus, Xperience, Xperience Plus and FR. A generous equipment

tally comes as standard across all models, with even entry-level SE trim coming with key items such as 17” alloy wheels, full LED lights, 9.2” navigation system, Bluetooth (media & phone), keyless start, roof rails, rear privacy glass, DAB radio, cruise control, 2-zone airconditioning, front centre armrest, spacesaver spare wheel, multiple airbags, Front Assist, Tiredness Recognition, and an electronic parking brake. Petrol engine options available in the SEAT Ateca comprise of a three-cylinder 1.0-litre unit which produces 110bhp in manual transmission only, and a four-cylinder 1.5-litre with 148bhp, which is available with either manual or DSG dual-clutch (automatic) transmissions. Customers looking for a diesel engine are catered for by way of a 2.0-litre TDI unit with 115bhp (manual only) or 150bhp (manual or DSG).

TEST CAR My SEAT Ateca test car was a 2.0-litre TDI (150bhp) DSG (auto) Xperience model finished in Rodium Grey metallic paint. Upgrading to the Xperience model brings with it 18” alloy wheels, wireless phone charger, keyless entry and start, Lane Assist, Traffic Sign Recognition, Front and Rear Parking Sensors, Park Assist, Adaptive Cruise Control, illuminated scuff plates in door openings, black leather interior, and The new SEAT Ateca’s platform is shared with the new SEAT Leon, so there’s good space inside. The Ateca handles magnificently on all types of road surface, while the low-set driving position means it feels sportier than some rival SUVs. The Ateca’s turbodiesel engine produces 150bhp and 340Nm of torque, ensuring swift acceleration from a standing

start. In fact, a 0-100km/h sprint can be completed in just 6.1-seconds, so the Ateca is capable of hot hatch-like performance when the need arises. A well-tuned chassis transforms the Ateca into one of the best handling compact SUV’s in its class, while also proving that the Ateca’s beauty is not only skin deep. VERDICT AND PRICING For me, the new Ateca SUV ticks all the boxes. It is super-stylish, great to drive and – with prices from just €31,910 (ex-works) – is great value for money. My test car specification is priced from €43,820, and all new SEAT passenger cars come with a 3-year/ 100,000km manufacturer warranty. The Ateca’s sharp looks, fun handling, practical body-style and solid build quality are the real icing on the cake. SUV buyers have never had it so good.

ŠKODA KODIAQ

– The successful SUV gets an update

F

our years after the Irish market launch and with 7,127 units delivered to Irish customers, the bestselling KODIAQ SUV will be updated this September. Receiving new exterior design and interior material changes as well as ŠKODA’s latest technologies such as full-LED Matrix headlights, the KODIAQ is likely to remain at the top of the sales charts again in 2022. Now offered exclusively as a seven-seat version – in Active, Ambition, Style and Sportline trim levels. The KODIAQ will be arriving in ŠKODA dealers across Ireland this September. The starting price for the new KODIAQ is €38,150 excluding delivery and related charges. John Donegan, ŠKODA more standard equipment with their local dealer at Ireland, Brand Director said: and safety features. their earliest convenience to “The KODIAQ has helped “The KODIAQ has often avoid delays and propel the ŠKODA brand to been a victim of its own disappointment. new heights, moving us into success with demand “I am confident our fourth position in the Irish outstripping supply. customers will love the new sales rankings. “I would urge customers revised KODIAQ just as much “The new KODIAQ has considering the new revised as the outgoing version.” improved interiors and even KODIAQ for 2022 to engage

ADVANCED EVO GENERATION ENGINES WITH LOWER FUEL CONSUMPTION AND EMISSIONS The new KODIAQ is offered in Ireland with three advanced and efficient EVO engines from the Volkswagen Group. The two 2.0 TDI diesel engines produce less emissions thanks to the ‘twin dosing’ exhaust gas treatment and produce 110 kW (150 PS) and 147 kW (200 PS) in combination with a

7-speed DSG automatic transmission. The more powerful diesel engine is offered exclusively with all-wheel drive. A petrol driven 1.5 TSI, with an output of 110 kW (150 PS), is the only model offered with a manual 6-speed gearbox in addition to a DSG transmission and is offered in two wheel drive only. The KODIAQ RS with a 2.0 TSI 180 kW (245 PS) petrol will not be offered on the Irish market. AN EVEN BOLDER LOOK AND OPTIONAL FULL-LED MATRIX HEADLIGHTS MAKE THEIR DEBUT A further developed ŠKODA SUV design language sets the updated KODIAQ apart. Aluminium-effect design details on the front and rear apron emphasise the rugged look of the

Active, Ambition and Style trim levels. This is reinforced even further by the restyled front with a hexagonal, more upright ŠKODA grille. The slimmer, more dynamic-looking headlights now feature LED technology as standard and – as a first for the KODIAQ – full-LED Matrix headlights are standard on Style and Sportline trims. MORE SUSTAINABLE INTERIOR AND OPTIONAL ERGONOMIC SEATS New decorative trims, additional contrasting stitching and the LED ambient lighting’s extended range of functions provide modern visual touches in the interior. For the first time, the extras include ergonomic, perforated-leather seats with multiway electric seat adjustment and ventilation.

IMPROVED ASSISTANCE SYSTEMS AND TYPICAL SIMPLY CLEVER SOLUTIONS The ŠKODA KODIAQ’s wide range of assistance systems now includes the enhanced version of Crew Protect Assist as an option, which has additional radar sensors at the rear to respond to vehicles that pose a collision risk. There are two Travel Assist options that – depending on the model – incorporate five to eight assistance systems. These include Predictive Cruise Control, Adaptive Lane Assist and an improved version of Traffic Sign Recognition. The variety of Simply Clever details that are typical of the brand now also include the integrated funnel in the lid of the windscreen washer tank.

AUDI SPORT tests the new

AUDI RS Q E-TRON

A

udi wants to be the first car manufacturer to use an electrified drivetrain in combination with an efficient energy converter to compete for overall victory against conventionally-powered competitors in the world’s toughest rally. “The quattro was a gamechanger for the World Rally Championship. Audi was the first brand to win the Le Mans 24 Hours with an electrified drivetrain. Now, we want to usher in a new era at the Dakar Rally, while testing and further developing our e-tron technology under extreme conditions,” says Julius Seebach, Managing Director of Audi Sport GmbH and responsible for motorsport at Audi. “Our RS Q e-tron was created on a blank sheet of paper in record time and stands for Vorsprung durch Technik.” The characteristics of the Dakar Rally present the engineers with special challenges. The marathon event lasts two weeks and the daily stages are up to 800 kilometers in length. “That’s a very long distance,” says Andreas Roos, responsible for the Dakar project at Audi Sport. “What we are trying to do has never been done before. This is the ultimate

challenge for an electric drivetrain.” Because there are no charging opportunities in the desert, Audi has chosen an innovative charging concept: Onboard the Audi RS Q e-tron, there is the highly efficient TFSI engine from the DTM. It is part of an energy converter that charges the high-voltage battery while driving. Since the combustion engine is operated in the particularly efficient range of between 4,500 and 6,000 rpm, the specific consumption is well below 200 grams per kWh. The drivetrain of the Audi RS Q e-tron is electric. The front and rear axles are both fitted with a motorgenerator unit (MGU) from the current Audi e-tron FE07 Formula E car which has been developed by Audi Sport for the 2021 season. Only minor modifications had to be made to use the MGU in the Dakar Rally. A third MGU, of identical design, is part of the energy converter and serves to recharge the high[1] voltage battery while driving. In addition, energy is recuperated during braking. The battery weighs about 370 kilograms and has a capacity of around 50 kWh. “The battery is also a proprietary development that we have realised

together with a partner,” says Stefan Dreyer, Head of Development at Audi Sport for motorsport projects. “As engineers, we basically see development potential in every component. But in terms of the drivetrain system, we have already achieved a system efficiency of over 97 percent in Formula E. There’s not much more room for improvement. “The situation is quite different with the battery and energy management. This is where the greatest development potential lies in electromobility in general. “What we learn from the extremely challenging Dakar project will flow into future production models. As always, we are also working closely with our colleagues

from road car development on this project.” The maximum system power of the e-drivetrain is 500 kW. How much of this may be used during the Dakar Rally is still being finalised by the organisers. The electric drivetain offers many advantages. The electric motors can be controlled extremely precisely and can thus ensure good drivability. In addition, braking energy can be recovered. The Audi RS Q e-tron only needs one forward gear. The front and rear axles are not mechanically connected, as is also common in electric vehicles. The software developed by Audi takes over the torque distribution between the axles and thus creates a virtual and freely

33 MotorMarket

configurable center differential, which has the positive side effect of being able to save the weight and space that would have been required by propshafts and a mechanical differential. Visually, the Audi RS Q e-tron also differs significantly from conventionally-powered Dakar prototypes. “The vehicle looks futuristic and has many design elements that are typical of Audi,” says Juan Manuel Diaz, Team Leader of Motorsport Design at Audi. “Our aim was to symbolize Vorsprung durch Technik and the future of our brand.” The Dakar Rally entry is being run in conjunction with Q Motorsport. “Audi has always chosen

new and bold paths in racing, but I think this is one of the most complex cars that I have ever seen,” says team principal Sven Quandt. “The electric drivetrain means that a lot of different systems have to communicate with each other. Besides reliability, which is paramount in the Dakar Rally, that’s our biggest challenge in the coming months.” Quandt compares Audi’s Dakar project to the first moon landing: “Back then, the engineers didn’t really know what was coming. It’s similar with us. If we finish the first Dakar event, that’s already a success.” The prototype of the Audi RS Q e-tron had its first rollout in Neuburg at the beginning of July. An

intensive test program and the first test entries at crosscountry rallies are on the agenda from now until the end of the year. “This project’s schedule is extremely packed and challenging,” says Andreas Roos. “Less than twelve months have passed since the project officially started. We had to begin the development while the regulations for alternativelypowered vehicles had not even been finalised yet. And all of the development took place during the Corona pandemic. You mustn’t underestimate that either. What the team has achieved so far is unique. The roll-out was a very special moment for everyone.”

DACIA DUSTER Ready for Adventure

By DECLAN GLYNN • www.motoringmatters.ie

T

he Dacia Duster has been a huge hit since the Renault-owned Romanian brand came to Ireland in 2013. Using a variety of Renault engines and drivetrains, along with a bespoke body and interior, it became Ireland’s cheapest Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV). Buyers found the Duster’s simplicity, ruggedness and practicality very appealing, while the SUV’s raised ride height provided excellent visibility too. SPORTY STANCE The second-generation Dacia Duster arrived with exterior styling changes that seemed relatively subtle and minor at first glance but take a second look and it will become evident that the new Duster enjoys an appearance that is more sophisticated and rugged than before. While the design is a clear evolution of the previous car, Dacia insists every panel has been changed. At the front, the design of the headlight clusters is new, while the headlights themselves have been moved closer to the corners of the front end in order to emphasise the new Duster’s sportier stance. There’s a new wider front grille, while the base of the car’s windscreen has been brought forward by 100mm and the screen itself is now more steeply raked to give the impression that there is more room in the cabin. The rear of the new Duster is marked out by distinctive new taillights, while a new tailgate door design also features.

ENHANCED SAFETY Not prepared to skimp on safety, Dacia has reinforced the entire vehicle frame on every new Duster, while boosting both active and passive safety features too. Hill Start Assist is standard across the entire new Duster range, as is ABS, Emergency Brake Assist, Electronic Stability Control, Traction Control, multiple airbags (front, side & curtain), LED daytime running lights, 2 x ISOFIX child seat anchorage points and a Tyre Pressure Warning Light. Driving pleasure is enhanced further by standard equipment like a gearshift indicator, stop & start function, ECO driving mode, Bluetooth, speed limiter and double-optic headlights. PETROL, DIESEL OR BIFUEL POWER Three trim levels are available in the new Duster SUV range – entry-level ‘Essential’, mid-spec ‘Comfort’ and range-topping ‘Prestige’, while engine options consist of a 1.0-litre TCe 100 (petrol or Bi-Fuel – petrol and LPG) producing

100bhp, a 1.3-litre TCe 130 (petrol) with 130bhp, and a 1.5-litre Blue dCi 115 (diesel) with 115bhp. Dacia’s ‘Blue dCi’ diesel engine is equipped with a system to reduce Nitrogen Oxide emissions by injecting an urea-based fluid, AdBlue®, into the exhaust system. A dashboard message will remind you when the AdBlue® needs topping up via a specific AdBlue® filling cap located next to the usual Diesel fuel filler cap. A full tank of AdBlue® will last for 6 full tanks of Diesel. Front-wheel-drive is standard across the range, with four-wheel-drive optional in TCe 130 and dCi 115 guises (model dependant). CAR ON REVIEW My test car was a new Dacia Duster ‘Prestige’ Blue dCi 115bhp, 6-speed manual, finished in Fusion Red metallic paint. Building on the generous equipment level of the Essential and Comfort models, Prestige specification includes 17” diamond-cut alloy wheels, Prestige upholstery, climate control, blind spot detection,

keyless entry & start, parking sensors and a multiview camera for ease of maneuverability. All of this is on top of standard ‘Comfort’ model specification, which includes cruise control, satin-chrome door mirrors, roof bars, side sills and skid plates, body-coloured door handles, ‘Media Nav’ satellite navigation, electric front & rear windows, rear camera, rear parking sensors and under-seat storage. The punchy engine in my test car produces 260Nm of torque for swift acceleration, allowing the car to sprint from 0-100km/h in just 10.5seconds, on its way to a top speed of 179km/h (where permitted). ON THE ROAD Having driven the previous generation Duster, I can honestly say that the allnew Duster is so much better in every crucial area.

The new car not only looks more grown-up than before, but it drives every bit as good as it looks. The new electromechanical power steering system does a fantastic job of filtering out shocks from broken road surfaces around town, while providing a well-judged feel at motorway speeds too. Overall body control in corners is good, with plenty of grip on offer, while highly effective brakes provide excellent stopping power. Dacia claim that, thanks to additional soundproofing, cabin noise in the all-new Duster has been halved when compared to the previous model and this becomes very evident when on the move. This is an important step in the right direction for Dacia, and one which occupants of the new Duster will really appreciate.

SPACIOUS CABIN AND BOOT The cabin of the all-new Duster feels built to last, with a functional dashboard layout incorporating easyto-read dials, while pianostyle buttons above the ventilation controls add a touch of class. The new front seat cushions are longer than before and there is more adjustability too. The driver’s seat also gets an armrest for the first time and this can be tucked away when not in use. Thanks to the upright stance of the new Duster, boot space is a generous 445-litres with the rear seats in place. However, drop the standard split-folding rear seatbacks and this capacity increases to a whopping 1,623-litres for ultimate practicality. LOW RUNNING COSTS Impressively, as little as

4.9-litres of diesel can be consumed for every 100km driven on an extra-urban driving cycle (WLTP realworld driving statistics), meaning that the Duster’s 50-litre fuel tank is capable of a potential range of over 1,000km’s. Annual road tax for the new Dacia Duster will range between €200 and €270 depending on the engine and transmission chosen, with my review car commanding just €210 for a 12-month tax disc. PRICING Overall, the new Dacia Duster SUV looks and feels much smarter and slicker than ever before, while its modern and robust look ensures it is ready for any adventure. Pricing for the new Dacia Duster starts at just €19,365 (or from just €160pm – t’s & c’s apply), with my top-spec review car priced at just €24,565.

ASTON MARTIN DBX makes its first film debut

A

ston Martin is proud to present the cinematic debut of the brand’s first SUV, DBX. The company’s first short film has been directed by the Oscar-nominated, Italian director Luca Guadagnino, and stars the golden globe winner and Emmy award nominee British actor Josh O’Connor. With art direction by Peter Saville, the film features O’Connor, most recently seen starring as Prince Charles in ‘The Crown.’ Filmed on location in Sicily, the film shows O’Connor undertaking a dream-like excursion at the wheel of the Aston Martin DBX. DBX gives the brand a commanding role in a new sector, the Sports Utility Vehicle. Designed at Aston Martin’s studio in Gaydon, Warwickshire, and built in the company’s state-of-theart production facility in St Athan, South Wales, DBX shares its DNA with its sports and GT siblings, combining effortless performance, superior dynamics, ultra-luxurious hand-crafted interiors and a truly bespoke customer experience. “We have created this movie in which we focus on a man and his mind, as well as his command of a car through a great landscape. It was wonderful how once Josh started to drive the Aston Martin DBX, the car somehow became this unique, beautiful sculptural object,” said Luca. “His figure and line perfectly blend into the line of the car.” “The thing that appealed to me first was that Aston Martin is a true British institution, a company that has been ever-present throughout my upbringing,” O’Connor said, “I think the combination of the luxury of

the brand, and the luxury of Luca’s vision is perfect and comes through in this very special film. There is a true sense of speed and there are no two ways about it, when you are in the DBX it feels like a true sports car.” Aston Martin’s Executive Vice President and Chief Creative Officer, Marek Reichman said: ‘Josh is an exceptional actor working at a time of a golden age for drama, while Peter Saville is a true creator of brands. He can turn his talent from creating a stunning logotype, to shaping an iconic image, being a brand ambassador for a city or even re-shaping a whole corporate identity. Together with Luca and Josh, we have three very different but definitive creative characters.” O’Connor is filmed behind the wheel of a Minotaur Green Aston Martin DBX with a light ivory interior, a contemporary update of a classic colour combination. The camera follows his journey through the island’s vineyards and dirt roads, culminating in a visit to a mysterious but elegant villa. The Aston Martin team joined the production team on set in Sicily to help craft the subtly framed hero shots of the car. The rich cinematography incorporates overlaid memories and vivid imagery to convey a subtle hint of motivation. As with all his films, Guadagnino demands that the viewer bring their own interpretation to the narrative. In addition to the Oscar-nominated Call Me by Your Name, Guadagnino’s recent films include A Bigger Splash and Suspiria. The director is currently working on his first American production, Bones & All. In parallel to his film career,

Guadagnino is also a successful interior designer, working on projects for the wellness brand Aesop, among others. “My films are always a beautiful interaction between me and the talented people I work with,” said Guadagnino. “We shot the film in May, and the DBX’s beautiful Minotaur Green finish created depth and shade against the Sicilian landscape, which I know so well. The DBX was almost like an Anish Kapoor sculpture, where reflections became very important.” “Luca really shared our understanding of the essence of beauty. As a director, he has extraordinary abilities - the way he plays with light is like a dream,” said Marek Reichman. “He also has a fantastic sensibility for materials and form. We wanted to ensure that you could see the sun on the aluminium vanes of the grille, for example, and convey the reflections of sunlight and shadow as they move across the surfaces of the car.” The experienced director brings a designer’s attention to detail to every frame, visually crafting a powerful and mysterious narrative. With a soundtrack supervised by the celebrated British musician, producer and composer Devonté Hynes, the production was a true collaboration of excellence. “We are a 108-year-old ultra-luxury brand. This new film conveys what it feels like to be part of Aston Martin and be truly engaged with the spirit and ethos of the company,” said Marek. “Luca doesn’t follow trends. He is a true future thinker and we gave him complete creative freedom.”

NEW FULLY-ELECTRIC

OPEL VIVARO-E T

– SILENT PROGRESSION

he new Opel Vivaro-e panel van is the premium choice for businesses with the highest professional standards that require their vehicles to fit seamlessly into an optimised work process. With uncompromising character and emission-free driving, the Vivaro-e is ideal for the urban environment and is available in three vehicle lengths, with two battery sizes for a range of up to 330km’s. Having been awarded the prestigious title of ‘International Van of the Year 2021’, the new Vivaro-e is a capable, practical, well equipped and stylish panel van in every respect, with the functionality and flexibility of its diesel engine siblings.e first Opel to use the striking ‘Vizor’ front design. heavily on the Opel Corsa-e TWO BATTERY SIZES The new Opel Vivaro-e is and its driveline fits comfortably between the available with a 50kWh chassis rails of the new battery for a range of up to 230km’s, or a 75kWh battery Vivaro-e. Power comes from a for up to 330km’s. Opel’s ground-breaking powertrain 100kW(136bhp) motor technology and architecture producing 260Nm of torque for smooth, swift and linear means that the low, flat acceleration. The 50kWh battery gives the Vivaro-e a battery is made up of 18 stable centre of gravity and modules consisting of 216 maximum cabin space. individual cells, while the Designed from the larger 75kWh battery has ground up with both diesel 324 cells split over 27 and electric powertrains in modules. mind, the Vivaro-e is based

Cooling for the batteries comes from the van’s own in-cab cooling system, which Opel says helps to increase their range and lifetime. All Vivaro-e models come with 3 driving modes and switchable regenerative braking as standard. The standard on-board charger is a 7.4kW single phase unit, while DC charging of up to 100kW is also supported. TRIM & BODY OPTIONS Trim levels in the new Vivaro-e panel van consist of Edition and Sportive models, both of which come with standard features such as driver and passenger airbags, electric parking brake, cruise control, full size spare wheel, 3.5” colour dashboard display, remote central deadlocking, two side loading doors, electric front windows, electrically adjustable and heated door mirrors, 4-speaker audio with a USB inlet, Bluetooth, steering-column remote audio controls, and a DAB radio. Top-spec Sportive trim brings with it air-con, 7” colour touchscreen with smartphone projection, body coloured bumpers (except on red), LED daytime running lights, front fog lights, rear parking sensors,

automatic lights and wipers, electrically folding door mirrors, acoustic windscreen and full-size wheel covers. Available with two body lengths and two roof heights the Vivaro-e is just as flexible as a diesel van with a load volume of up to 6.6m3. Because the batteries are between the chassis rails, the total capacity of the load space is completely unchanged, allowing 4,959mm lengths in the L1 model and up to 5,309mm in the L2 when using the loadthrough bulkhead. Otherwise, the standard maximum length capacity of the van is 1,512mm for the L1 and 2,862mm for the L2. Payloads are equally impressive, as replacing the engine and transmission with batteries and a motor doesn’t significantly harm it’s capacities. All Vivaro-e vans have a gross vehicle weight (GVW) of 3.1-tonne, and depending on spec you can get a maximum 1,226kg payload out of a L1 standard roof height (H1) panel van with the 50kWh battery. Specifying the larger 75kWh unit brings that figure down to 1,000kg. Those figures are just 130kg less than a diesel-engine Vivaro - a far cry from the 36 MotorMarket

disadvantage that battery electric vehicles used to have when compared to diesel-powered vans in the past. TEST VAN DETAILS My test van was a new Vivaro-e Sportive (L2 H1) 50kWh finished in stylish Moonstone Grey metallic paint. The three-seater Vivaro-e has storage under the passenger bench, while the driver’s seat comes with an adjustable armrest and 6-way seat adjustment. Being an electric van where the full amount of torque is available from just 300rpm all the way up to 3,672rpm, it is exceptionally quick off the mark. Unladen, the Vivaro-e accelerates with impressive urgency, and I have no doubt it would still prove fast even with a full payload on board. The top speed is limited to 130km/h in order to preserve the battery range, but this is something that should not be of any concern to Vivaro-e drivers, as the van is more than capable of overtaking slower moving traffic with great ease.

The regenerative braking system in the Vivaro-e is selected by pressing the ‘B mode’ button beside the gear selector, and this applies enough braking to activate the brake lights and slow the vehicle down before the driver presses the brake pedal. I loved the fact that the Vivaro-e is very car-like to drive, and the selectable Eco, Normal and Power driving modes ensure that there is a mode to suit every type of driver and every type of load. The Vivaro-e remains composed and comfortable when driven over rutted road surfaces, while body lean through bends is very well controlled. The Vivaro-e pulls away in silence, with just a hum from the on-board sound generator that is designed to warn others of your presence at low speeds, with just minimal levels of tyre and wind noise noticeable at higher speeds.

CHARGING TIMES Charging the Vivaro-e (50kWh battery) from a domestic socket can take up to 28 hours, but this drops dramatically to 7.5 hours when charged from a 7.4KW wall box charger (0-100% charge). However, DC rapid charging from a 100kW source (0-80% capacity) takes just half an hour for the 50kWh battery and 48 minutes for the 75kWh version. VERDICT AND PRICING Overall, the new Opel Vivaro-e is a genuinely impressive van to drive, easy to live with on a daily basis, offers fast-charging options and it is a good looking van too. In my opinion, this is the class-leading panel van in the all-electric light commercial vehicle (LCV) market right now, and deservedly so too. Pricing for the new Vivaro-e panel van starts at just €36,895 (inc VAT) or €29,833 (ex-VAT).

The new AUDI RS 3

Unmatched sportiness suitable for everyday use W

ith its five-cylinder, high-performance engine, the Audi RS 3 is one-of-a-kind in the segment. The 2.5 TFSI has won the “International Engine of the Year” award nine times in a row. In the latest generation of the compact sports car, the engine is now more powerful than ever before. The new RS 3 models sprint from zero to 100 km/h in just 3.8 seconds. Their top speed is limited to 250 km/h, with 280 km/h also available as an optional upgrade. With the RS Dynamic package and ceramic brakes, they can even reach a top speed of 290 km/h. This makes the Audi RS 3 the best in its class in terms of acceleration and top speed. This is primarily due to the 500 Nm increase in torque, which is available between 2,250 and 5,600 rpm. That is equal to 20 Nm more than its predecessor. As a result, the Audi RS 3 accelerates even faster from low rev ranges. The engine's maximum power of 294 kW (400 PS) is available earlier than before at 5,600 rpm and extends over a broad plateau to 7,000 rpm. A new engine control unit also increases the speed at which all of the drive components communicate with each other. The new Audi RS 3 is the first Audi model that comes standard-equipped with a torque splitter. It replaces the rear axle differential and the previous multiple disc clutch package. Instead, an electronically controlled multiple disc clutch is used on each of the drive shafts. This ensures that the right amount of torque is optimally distributed along the rear axle. During more dynamic driving, the torque splitter

increases the drive torque to the respective outer rear wheel with the higher wheel load, which significantly reduces the tendency to understeer. In left-hand curves, it transmits the drive torque to the right rear wheel, in righthand curves to the left rear wheel, and when driving straight ahead to both wheels. The RS 3 comes standardequipped with larger and newly developed six-piston steel brakes to keep the power of the five-cylinder engine in check. A ceramic brake system measuring 380 by 38 mm is optionally available on the front axle with a pedal characteristic curve specially adapted to the brake booster. The high-performance brake system weighs another ten kilograms less than the steel brake. Its internally ventilated and drilled discs measure 375 by 36 mm at the front and 310 by 22 mm at the rear, making them larger and more stable than in the previous model. Air control elements improve the brakes’ cooling time by 20 percent. This reduces peak temperatures quicker during hard braking while pedal feel remains the same. In addition, it also reduces brake pad wear, which are 15 percent larger and copper-free. Those who opt for the ceramic brakes can choose between grey, red, or blue brake callipers. Those who prefer the steel version can order red callipers instead of the black ones. The design of the new Audi RS 3 is even more dynamic and powerful than that of its predecessor. The front wide RS bumper has a redesigned Singleframe with a distinctive honeycomb grille, and the

large air intakes give the compact sports car an expressive appearance. The RS 3 comes standardequipped with flat, wedgeshaped LED headlights and LED taillights including dynamic turn signal lights. Matrix LED headlights are available as an option, with darkened bezels that feature digital daytime running lights around their outer downturned angles. With its pixel field of 3 x 5 LED segments, it provides an unmistakable look – a chequered flag appears in the left headlight as a dynamic leaving and coming home scene, and the RS 3 lettering appears on the driver’s side. When driving, the chequered flag lights up on both sides. The interior of the Audi RS features elements which accentuate its sportiness. The displays appear in the 12.3inch Audi virtual cockpit plus, which comes standard. It displays the rpms in the form of a bar graph and shows power and torque as percentages. Optionally, the rpm display is available in the new “RS Runway” design. In this case, the values are displayed in the opposite direction in a manner that visually resembles an airplane runway – the highest speed in the foreground and the lowest speed in the background. In addition, the Audi virtual cockpit plus includes displays for g-forces, lap times and acceleration from 0 100 km/h, 0-200 km/h, quarter mile, and eighth of a mile. The Audi RS 3 Sportback and RS 3 Saloon will be available to order from August 2021. Pricing for the RS 3 Sportback and the RS 3 Saloon will be announced in the coming weeks.
