n 1934 Citroen stunned the automotive world with the introduction of the Traction Avant model. It had a longitudinally mounted engine in the front, driving the front wheels, with the gearbox mounted ahead of the engine. It had independent front suspension using wishbones and torsion bars. At the rear the beam axle was mounted on trailing arms which were connected to a transverse torsion bar. The body was a monocoque structure, giving the Traction Avant a lightweight yet stiff structure, which provided excellent ride and roadholding. The Traction Avant models lasted until 1955, when the company introduced the fantastic DS model. The DS had all independent suspension using a hydropneumatic system which could be raised or lowered to suit load and driving conditions. The hydropneumatic system also provided power assisted steering. The body was extremely stylish and superbly aerodynamic. Even by today’s standards the DS was fantastically advanced for its time. It is thus no surprise that Citroen are again looking at new concepts and solutions for today’s
motoring needs. I was utterly surprised when I opened the bonnet to look at the engine, to experience how light in weight the bonnet was. Those cushioned pads on the side are an excellent idea, given how narrow our parking bays are in relation to the overall width of today’s cars. With official concern so occupied with vehicles exhaust emissions, the C4 Cactus delivers an excellent 89 gm/km from its 1.6 litre diesel engine. The test car was powered by the BlueHDi 100 diesel engine, driving the front wheels through a five speed manual gearbox. Turbocharged and intercooled, in the interests of fuel economy it is
also fitted with Stop/Start as standard. It is relatively modestly tuned, with a specific output of 46.794 kW/lt, but this does not limit its performance potential. It is credited with a top speed of 183 kph (114 mph), which is well above the national speed limits in most countries in Europe and it delivers a 0-100 kph acceleration time of 10.7 seconds, which is certainly more than adequate for most daily driving conditions. Of even more importance in these times of financial hardships, by EU testing standards its Urban cycle fuel consumption is a magnificent 74 mpg (3.8 lt/100 km) rising to 88 mpg (3.2 lt/100 km) on the Extra urban cycle and averaging out

This frugal fuel consumption gives an excellent exhaust emissions reading of 89 gm/km, placing it in Irish road tax band A2, with a current annual charge of €180. The Cactus is thus a very pleasant car to drive in city, suburban, country and motorway conditions, with an effortless performance in every condition and a satisfyingly frugal fuel consumption. The ride and roadholding are excellent, the steering is light and positive, requiring just 3.02 turns from lock to lock and the gearchange is smooth and direct with a good feel. I particularly liked the feel of the leather covered steering wheel, which had a beautiful high quality feel. In most areas I liked the design and feel of the interior upholstery and finish. Unfortunately I was not all that favourably impressed by the touch pad instrument panel in the centre of the facia. Firstly I am not into all these electronic gadgets, but a lot of younger
people certainly seem to be. Secondly I found its central positioning meant that you had to take your eyes off the road to look at it when you need to use it for one reason or the other. I did, however, like the digital reading of the speed and fuel level, in the panel behind the steering wheel, where I could see it at a glance, without having to take my eyes off the road. The test car was finished to the top level Flair specification. Besides the large glass roof panel, which I loved, it included two electric front windows, heated and electrically adjustable, exterior rear view mirrors, two ISOfix fittings for child safety seats in the outer positions on the rear bench seat, front fog lamps, cruise control, airconditioning and a reversing camera. The driver’s seat adjusts for reach, height and backrest angle, while the front passenger seat adjusts for reach and backrest angle. Both front seats are superbly comfortable and well bolstered. The steering wheel adjusts for reach and
height, so drivers should have no difficulty in finding a comfortable position. One thing that did surprise me was the fact that while the driver’s sun visor had a covered vanity mirror on its inner side, there was none in the passenger sun visor. The two rear doors had privacy glass. The windows did not wind down but were hinged along their forward edge and opened outwards, as you expect in a two or three door model. The rear seat backrest is a one piece unit and folds onto the seat cushion when you need extra luggage space. When all five seats are in use, there is 0.358 cubic metres of space under the removable rear parcels shelf. When the shelf is removed and the rear seat backrest folded flat, this expands to 1.170 cubic metres. The Flair specification comes with black roof rails as standard and the Cactus can carry up to 80 kg on the roof. If towing is a requirement, this model can manage braked trailers of up to 825 kg and unbraked trailers of up to 570 kg.

Active specification are heated, electrically adjustable, exterior rear view mirrors, height adjustable driver’s seat, 15” wheels and Bluetooth connectivity. In addition to those items the Allure specification has a reverse parking camera, automatic headlamps, front fog lamps, 15” alloy wheels, a leather covered steering wheel, a Tachometer and a smart key entry system. Later in the year the distributors will add a three door version, to the range. It will come in the basic Access specification. No prices have yet been decided for this version. 108 Cabrio
PEUGEOT 108 The new Peugeot 108 is due to arrive on the Irish market in January. In Ireland it will only be offered in the five door body style in two levels of trim and equipment, Active and Allure. Prices, excluding delivery and associated charges, start at €13,290 for the Active model and rise to €14,870 for the Allure specification. There is also a cabrio model, with the Allure specification priced at €15,870. The Active model comes with a 1.0 litre petrol engine, while the Allure has a 1.2 litre petrol unit. Both engines come with the choice of manual or
automatic/manual gearboxes. Although it is a small economy car, it still offers comfortable seating space for four adults, with 0.196 cubic metres of luggage space. Both Active and Allure specifications come as standard with a spare wheel. Other standard equipment across the range is Hill Start Assist, electric front windows, remote controlled central locking, LED daytime running lights, Tyre Pressure Warning, six airbags and an electronic stability programme. Normally I would announce my Twin Cam Irish Car of the Year, towards the end of November. However, this year there were a number of superb cars, so I found it difficult to choose the one that stood out above all the others. I have thus selected models from several categories and named them as the Stars of 2014.

Mini JCW Located in south western Germany, close to the Austrian border, I suppose it is understandable that BMW do not understand the meaning of the word “mini” in the English language. Just to be absolutely sure myself, I looked it up in the dictionary and found that “mini” means “smaller than the usual size.” Perhaps that is why they always present the name in capital letters!

Whatever the reason they are preparing to launch a new high performance version of their MINI in the spring of 2015. The JCW in its title stands for John Cooper Works. The MINI JCW will be powered by a twin turbocharged, direct injection, petrol engine with variable valve control and variable camshaft control. With a cubic capacity of 1998 cc it is said to have a power output of 170 kW @ 5,200 - 6,000 rpm, with torque of 320 Nm between 1,250 and 4,800 rpm. Buyers will have the choice of a six speed manual or a six
speed Steptronic Sports transmission. However, if you are interested, according to the figures issued, the Steptronic is by the far the better version from a performance point of view. Whichever you choose, top speed is 244 kph (152 mph), but 0-100 kph acceleration is 6.1 seconds with the Steptronic and 6.3 seconds with the manual. That is not a great deciding factor, but EU combined cycle fuel consumption is 42 mpg (6.9 lt/100 km) giving exhaust emissions of 155 gm/km with the manual transmission, compared to 49 mpg (5.7 lt/100 km) and exhaust emissions of 133 gm/km with the Steptronic. That equates to a difference of €120 per annum in favour of the Steptronic based on current rates of Irish road tax, before taking fuel consumption into consideration. New BMW 6 series
The new 6 series BMW models will be formally announced at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January. It consists of three body styles; Coupe, Grand Coupe and Convertible. In the past year the Grand Coupe has proved to be the most popular version taking around 60% of total six series sales. Buyers will have the choice of six cylinder and V8 engines. The six cylinder engines now all benefit from BMW’s Efficient Dynamics package. All engines drive through an eight speed automatic transmission. With the 640d diesel engine, top speed is 249 kph (155 mph) for all three models. The 0-100 kph time is 5.3 seconds for the coupe, 5.5 seconds for the Convertible and 5.4 seconds for the Grand coupe. Exhaust emissions are 139 gm/km (coupe), 144 gm/km (convertible) and 143 gm/km (grand coupe). Power output is 230 kW and 630 Nm. There are three petrol engines on offer, 640i, 650i and M6. Power output is 235 kW (640i), 330 kW (650i) and 410 kW (M6). Torque output is 450 Nm (640i), 650 Nm (650i) and 680 Nm (M6). All have a top speed electronically limited to 249 kph (155 mph).
