2022 MAZDA CX-5 W hen the original Mazda CX-5 was launched in 2012 it was credited as being the first Mazda production car to feature both ‘Kodo’ design and ‘Skyactiv’ technology. It set new dynamic standards, and changed perceptions of how engaging a compact SUV could be. The second generation CX-5 arrived in 2017 and it saw Mazda’s engineers deliver an SUV that took the ‘Jinba Ittai’ car-and-driveras-one design and engineering philosophy to the next level. Complimented by the introduction of G-Vectoring Control (GVC), it became more comfortable, refined and responsive. Since then, successive updates have built on the many and diverse strengths of the second generation model. BIG-SELLING FAMILY SUV The CX-5 accounts for almost 20% of Mazda’s new car registrations across Europe, and now the big-selling SUV has received some updates for 2022 to keep it fresh in the face of strong competition within the ever-popular family SUV class. There are new front and rear bumpers, a new front grille design, redesigned front and rear LED lamp clusters, even more safety equipment, and an expanded line-up (bringing the total number of variants to six), which features three new specifications: Newground, Homura and GT Lux. These new grades incorporate subtle individual differences to define their distinctive characters. Additionally, numerous interior elements have been refined and upgraded to raise the quality of both the cabin environment and its HMI technology.
Connectivity has evolved to support both Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™, and the latest MyMazda App Connected Services features too. MAZDA INTELLIGENT DRIVE The 2022 CX-5 introduces Mazda Intelligent Drive select (Mi-Drive), which enables the driver to select the most appropriate drive mode with one touch of a switch. Mazda’s Skyactiv-Vehicle Architecture concept has been applied to the CX-5, further evolving the bodyshell, suspension and seats to provide a comfortable, engaging, ‘Jinba Ittai’ driving experience over even the longest journey. The cabin in the CX-5 is exceptionally well-constructed, and all of the materials used are of the highest quality for an overall premium feel. Families don’t need to

Barcelona recently, I can honestly say that the time Mazda’s engineers have dedicated to making the CX-5 ride better has paid off handsomely. New dampers, slightly softer springs and redesigned seats that offer terrific support provide the revised family SUV with a genuine upmarket feel and look. the route took me up (and down) steep hills with an array of twisty bends and challenging road surfaces along the way. My CX-5 Newground test car was fitted with Mazda’s wonderful 2.2-litre 150bhp Skyactiv-D (diesel) engine, and was mated to Mazda’s famously-smooth sixspeed manual transmission that fed power to the front wheels in a refined and well-controlled manner. Thanks to a hefty 380Nm of torque (at 1,800 rpm), my test car was more than capable of navigating its way through every task asked of it - all of which was done with the minimum of gearchanging needed, while suspension upgrades filter out even more road noise than ever before. ENGINE AND DRIVETRAIN OPTIONS The revised Mazda CX-5 is still an extremely well-rounded SUV in every respect. The chassis changes have made it more comfortable for all occupants, while the styling tweaks have added even more desirability to the mix. The CX-5 is, without doubt, an upmarket, elegant, spirited and intelligent vehicle, as well as being one of the SUV segment’s most enjoyable driver’s cars.

VOLVO – No.1 Premium SUV Brand in Ireland

fter a strong start to 2022, Volvo Cars is delighted to announce its position as No.1 premium SUV brand in Ireland, with its full XC range dominating the segment in January. Adding to this, the company saw a 65.4% total sales growth year to date from 2021, bringing its market share to 1.92% for the first time ever. The XC60 was the bestselling SUV in the premium segment, followed closely by its siblings, the XC90 and XC40 respectively. Volvo performance in Ireland mirrors the company’s global trends. In 2021, Volvo’s XC60 continued to be the company’s
bestselling global model with sales reaching 215,635 cars (2020: 191,696 units). Last year, Volvo Cars strengthened the appeal of its XC60 with the introduction of the ground-breaking Androidpowered infotainment system and the long-range battery on Recharge models, significantly extending its electric range. These January results also demonstrate the continued popularity of Volvo Cars’ Recharge line-up of cars with a fully electric or plug-in hybrid powertrain. Over half of child car seats incorrectly fitted
O
ver half of child car seats (56%) checked by the Road Safety Authority’s Check it Fits service were incorrectly fitted and needed some type of adjustment to make them a safe fit. If a child’s car seat isn’t fitted correctly, it could lead to a serious or fatal injury in the event of a collision. In order to increase awareness of car seat safety and reduce misuse rates, the RSA has launched a new voluntary Code of Practice for Child Car Seat retailers. The new Code of Practice will ensure that best practice is achieved when parents or guardians are buying a child restraint system. This in turn means that when buying a new child car seat, families can be confident that they are getting the best advice and guidance on the most suitable car seat for their child and car. To date, 15 child car seat retailers have committed to the new Code of Practice, covering 40 stores nationwide. Three child car seat manufacturers are signed up, with interest from another three. People should look out for the RSA’s Code of Practice stickers in retailer outlets or you can check the list of participating retailers on rsa.ie. Aisling Sloyan, Senior Road Safety Promotion Officer and Child Car Seat Expert with the RSA, said: “While the RSA’s experience with its Check it Fits service shows that half of child car seats are fitted incorrectly, worryingly, it found that 30% of these needed a major adjustment to fix them. For example, the seat being excessively loose so as to make the fitting almost ineffective. 67% were minor adjustments, for example, the fitting being loose or a twisted seatbelt. This new Code of Practice will help the public feel confident that they are getting the correct information they need from retailers when buying a child car seat. This includes help on deciding the correct seat for their child’s weight, height, and age. All child car seat retailers and manufacturers are welcome to participate in this Code.” Minister of State at the Department of Transport, Hildegarde Naughton, said: “If a child’s car seat isn’t fitted correctly, it could
lead to a serious injury in the event of a collision or worse. I am delighted that this new Code of Practice has been launched and I want to applaud the manufacturers and retailers of child car seats that have adopted this new Code of Practice. It is through practical measures like this, where we all work together, and achieve our core target of the new Road Safety Strategy, which is to reduce road deaths and serious injuries by 50% by 2030.” Sam Waide, CEO of the Road Safety Authority, said: “The point of sale, where child car seats are bought and sold, is critical to driving down misuse rates of child car seats. I would like to thank all the retailers who already go above and beyond when providing customer care and after sales support. I would appeal to retailers who haven’t signed up to the new Code of Practice to please do so. A measure like this is a win/win for everyone. “Parents get the reassurance that what they are buying will keep their child safe and for the retailer it’s a unique selling point for your business. Most importantly of all its going to save lives and prevent injuries on our journey to Vision Zero where we eliminate all deaths and injuries by 2050.” Chief Superintendent, Michael Hennebry, An Garda Síochána, said: “The importance of proper fitting of a child car seat cannot be underestimated when it comes to protecting the safety of our younger passengers when travelling in cars. It is equally important to know how to properly adjust car child seats as a child grows. When carrying children in a vehicle, drivers must ensure that they use the correct type of child restraint for the height and weight of the child passengers. This initiative will help ensure that best practice is followed when buying a child restraint system”. The RSA are also delighted to announce that their face-to-face child car seat checking service – Check it Fits – will be back on the road visiting locations around the country after a two-year absence due to the COVID-19 pandemic. People are advised to check the RSA website for updates and details on locations that we will be visiting.

Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupé – a whole new dimension

any car manufacturers have successfully forged a path with petrol-electric hybrids over the last number of years, and while Mercedes-Benz do have petrol-electric hybrids in their model line-up, they also offer buyers the choice of diesel-electric power in some models. One such model is the mighty Mercedes-Benz GLE 350 de 4MATIC Coupé, with the ‘de’ signifying diesel-electric power, as opposed to ‘e’ in the petrol-electric hybrid version.
DISTINCTIVE DESIGN While the GLE is also available in a traditional SUV body style, it is the Coupé that I am testing here. Rivals to the GLE Coupé include the Audi Q8, BMW X6 and Porsche Cayenne Coupé, with all of the above comfortably fitting into the ‘luxurious large SUV’ market segment, albeit a relatively small market in Ireland. The front of the GLE Coupé is similar to the standard GLE with its distinct grille with horizontal slats, and a large MercedesBenz badge taking centre stage, but the Coupé’s
thinner headlights, swooping roofline, and wider stance set it apart. Measuring in at 4,939mm in length, 2,010mm in width (excluding door mirrors) and standing 1,730mm tall, the GLE Coupé commands terrific road presence. IMPRESSIVE POWER Powering the GLE 350 de 4MATIC Coupé is a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder turbo-diesel engine which works in unison with an electric motor for a maximum system output of 320bhp and 700Nm of torque. This power is transferred

to the road by way of a 9G TRONIC automatic transmission with steering column-mounted gear selector and DIRECT SELECT steering wheel gearshift paddles, while 4MATIC permanent four-wheel-drive provides extra grip when needed. Capable of completing a 0-100km/h sprint in just 6.9seconds, the GLE Coupé can reach a top speed of 210km/h (where permitted), while returning fuel consumption as low as 7.5l/100km on a combined driving cycle.

INTUITIVE INFOTAINMENT The infotainment system in the GLE Coupé is visually stunning and is easy to navigate through via touch, voice or by using a touchpad and menu shortcut buttons on the centre console between the front seats. Smartphone integration is seamless and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come as standard. The GLE Coupé comes with electric front seats and the steering wheel adjusts for height and reach, so finding a comfortable driving position is a simple exercise. There is ample head and legroom in the front of the GLE Coupé, with rear seat passengers also enjoying excellent legroom, while Isofix child seat anchorage points are standard on the outside rear seats. LUXURIOUSLY-APPOINTED CABIN The luxuriouslyappointed cabin of the

Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupé is dominated by two 12-inch screens mounted side-byside, seamlessly joining the central infotainment display on the left and the digital driver’s display on the right, with the latest incarnation of the Mercedes-Benz MBUX infotainment system fitted as standard. The colourful, crisp and bright screens are easy to read – even in direct sunlight – and the menus respond quickly to commands made of them. Class-leading cargo capacity of 655-litres with all rear seatbacks in place provides ample room for a set of golf clubs, two large suitcases and a child’s buggy side-by-side. The square shaped boot comes with hooks and nets to make smaller items secure on the move, while no loading lip makes it easy to load bulky items too. TEST CAR My test car was a Mercedes-Benz GLE 350 de 4MATIC Coupé AMG Line, which was finished in Indium Silver metallic paintwork, with contrasting 21-inch AMG multi-spoke
light-alloy wheels (painted in black with a high-sheen finish) and black Nappa leather upholstery. As we have come to expect from the MercedesBenz brand, a hugelyimpressive specification comes as standard. Key features include AIRMATIC air-suspension, Burmester™ surround sound system, climatised front seats (heated and cooled), panoramic sliding roof, parking package with 360degree camera, MULTIBEAM LED headlights, electric tailgate, and a charging cable for wallbox and public charging stations (5m straight), along with a suite of advanced driver assistance systems. Optional extras fitted to my test car included aluminium, illuminated running boards with rubber studs, and a Night Package to compliment the exterior styling of the car. The relatively tall stance of the GLE Coupé provides all occupants with terrific visibility, while the wide footprint enables the car to feel sharp and upright through corners. The steering is light at
low speeds and a host of sensors and cameras scan the road ahead for potential dangers and alert the driver accordingly, while the standard air-suspension does a great job of absorbing road imperfections and speed ramps. The impressive power on offer from the hybrid powerplant ensures that getting up to motorway speed can be done in a calm and relaxed manner, with the car remaining extremely well planted, quiet and immensely comfortable at all times. VERDICT & PRICING With its magnificent blend of comfort, great infotainment tech, supreme diesel-electric hybrid power, and one of the finest interiors in its class, the mighty Mercedes-Benz GLE 350 de 4MATIC is yet another worthy addition to the German premium brand’s growing hybrid model lineup. My test car specification is priced at €98,065 with optional extras fitted to the car bringing the overall price to €101,295 (ex-works).

Asserting a youthful, energetic image, the new 208 boasts a sleek, quality design and high-end look that is perfectly in keeping with the Peugeot brand's upmarket strategy. From the very first glance, it is clear to see that the new 208 possesses a strong and confident personality. The low-slung silhouette, long bonnet and sensual curves hint at its sporty and seductive spirit, while its handsome good looks provide a real feelgood factor, helping the new 208 to stand out in the crowded supermini market. SPORTY LOOK & WIDE STANCE The new Peugeot 208 is longer, wider and lower than its predecessor, revealing a

Standard items across all levels include Automatic Emergency Braking, Active Safety Brake (night function, cyclists, pedestrians), Extended Traffic Sign Recognition, manual air-conditioning, electric mirrors (heated), rear parking sensors, push button start, electric front windows, and many more comfort, convenience and safety features. The new 208 is available with a choice of 3 Puretech petrol engines – a 1.2 litre 75bhp (5-speed manual) in Active trim, a 1.2 litre 100bhp (6-speed manual or 8-speed automatic) in all trim levels, and a 1.2 litre 130bhp (8speed automatic) in Allure Pack and GT variants, along with a 1.5-litre BlueHDi turbo-diesel engine with 100bhp (6-speed manual) which is exclusively available in Active and Allure Pack trim levels. Additionally, an allelectric powertrain (badged e-208) is available across the entire trim range. Each petrol and diesel engine in the new 208 is compliant with the latest

stringent EURO 6 emissions controls, and are fitted with stop/start functionality for greater efficiency. Built on Peugeot's new common modular production platform, the 208’s CO2 emissions are reduced through weight reduction, improved aerodynamics and reduced rolling resistance. The platform also provides for greater acoustic and thermal comfort on board, and lower vibration levels. In addition to standard body colours and the optional Black Diamond roof, the new Peugeot 208 is on offer with a range of colours to reflect the car's energetic character - Faro Yellow, triple coat Vertigo Blue, and Elixir Red with an additional topcoat that deepens the colour depth, with many other colour options also available. NEW-GENERATION OF PEUGEOT I-COCKPIT The new Peugeot 208 benefits from a newgeneration of the ingenious Peugeot i-Cockpit - now an inseparable part of the Peugeot DNA. Depending on
the trim, the 3D instrument panel displays information at two levels. On the upper digital pad, information is projected in hologram form, where data is displayed closer or further away from the driver's eye depending on the function, importance or urgency, thereby increasing reaction responses. Sporting toggle switches, the new 208 is available with a 5, 7 or 10" touchscreen, depending on trim and options selected. In addition to the door bins and glovebox, there are 3 additional storage areas (depending on version), including a large storage area under the armrest between the front seats, an easy-access tray in front of the gear lever and a clever concealable storage space in the central console that can be used to discreetly and wirelessly charge a smartphone. Boot space is equally impressive, with 311-litres available, but this increases to 1,106-litres when the rear seats are folded. Seat comfort for all occupants of the new 208 is terrific, with
an adequate amount of head, leg and elbow room on offer too. TEST CAR My test car was a 208 GT 1.2-litre Puretech 100bhp 6-speed manual, which looked terrific in Cumulus Grey metallic with its contrasting black trim on the roof, wheel arches and mirror caps, while sporty two-tone alloy wheels provide even greater visual appeal. The refined petrol engine can propel the car from 0-100km in a spritely 9.9-seconds, while a fuel return of 5.5l/100km is achieveable when the car is driven on a WLTP combined driving cycle. Standard GT Line equipment includes key items such as 17” diamondcut alloy wheels, Visio Park 1 (a 180-degree colour reversing camera with front & rear parking sensors), full LED headlights with Smartbeam Assist, a 10” colour touchscreen with navigation, leather-effect & cloth seats, and an 8-colour ambient lighting system for true individuality. My test car performed
admirably on a variety of back roads and motorways, with the 100bhp engine pulling strongly from a standing start, while also providing plenty of punch for safe overtaking. A strong brake pedal feel ensures that the new 208 stops confidently, while an intuitive and slick six-speed manual gearbox makes the car very enjoyable to drive. Build quality throughout the new 208 is exceptional, while the car’s striking cabin design provides a real sense of occasion to every journey. VERDICT, PRICING & WARRANTY The Peugeot 208 is a superb car in every respect, from its striking looks and its fantastic interior, to the way it performs on a wide variety of road surfaces. Additionally, the new 208 is economical and comfortable, while Peugeot’s 5-Year/100,000km warranty comes as standard. The super-stylish 208 is priced from just €22,370 (ex-works), with my test car specification priced at €27,780 (ex-works) and annual road tax of just €190.

New Kia EV6 scoops prestigious ICOTY Award for 2022

t an awards ceremony on February 11th at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin, the Kia EV6 was named as the Continental Tyres Irish Car of the Year for 2022. Motoring journalists from print, online and broadcasting hosted the Covid-19 guideline compliant event, which was attended by Ireland’s leading car brands, importers, and distributors. Kia took the top award with its latest EV6 model which also won the Continental Tyres Irish Large Car of the Year category award at the ceremony. It is the second time that an electric vehicle has taken the award as Kia also won the 2020 Irish Car of the Year title with the all-electric Kia e-Soul. Joint-Chairman of the Irish Car of the Year Committee, Anthony Conlon said: "The Kia EV6 is a great car and as the second electric vehicle to win the title, it is proof, if any proof was needed, that the era of electric motoring is already well and truly here in Ireland. Just look at our field of runners for this year’s awards, more than half of the contenders are available as either partial or full electric vehicles”. Joint-Chairman of the Irish Car of the Year Committee, Cathal Doyle said: “Congratulations to the Kia team on a very worthy win and what an achievement to score back-to-back titles with two great electric vehicles. TEST CAR My test car was a new Bayon Executive 1.2litre MPI, which was finished in elegant Aurora Gray Pearl paintwork that compliments its strong SUV design. Producing 84PS (83bhp) and 118Nm of torque, the Bayon can reach 100km/h in 13.5-seconds, while returning up to 50.5mpg (5.6l/100km) on a WLTP combined driving cycle. A low Co2 emission figure of 126g/km translates to annual road tax of just €200. On the road is where the new Bayon really excels, with a terrific mix of comfort, control, poise and precision on offer. Road imperfections are dealt with swiftly, while noises and knocks from the suspension are well isolated from the cabin.
For a relatively small car, the Bayon’s motorway refinement and stability are impressive, while the car corners keenly on twisty roads. A precise steering response ensures that the Bayon is a delight to drive around town, while the standard rear parking sensors and rear view camera in my test car made parking a doddle too. The family-friendly cabin space in the new Bayon is impressive, with rear legroom deserving particular praise. Interior storage comprises a of a deep glovebox, front and rear door bins that can accommodate a large bottle, and a flat shelf for a smartphone at the bottom of the wellconstructed dashboard. Boot capacity of 411-litres can be transformed into a 1,205-litre space when the rear seat backs are folded down, while an intelligent trunk cover can be stowed away safely within the boot when not in use. PRICING & WARRANTY The new Hyundai Bayon is available in a multitude of stylish exterior colours, along with the option of a two-tone roof and matching door mirror housings in Phantom Black to create a car perfectly matched to individual taste. Over quarter of drivers and passengers killed on Irish roads in 2021 were not wearing a seat belt
T
he Road Safety Authority (RSA) and An Garda Síochána are urging drivers and passengers to always wear a seat belt on every journey. The call comes as an analysis, by the RSA, of provisional garda statistics from 2021, shows that 27%* of drivers and passengers killed in road traffic collisions, were not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. Analysis of provisional collision data from 2017 to 2020 shows that 10%* of vehicle occupants seriously were not wearing a seat belt. (See Tables 1 & 2). Separately, results of new attitudinal research of drivers’ attitudes and behaviour* released today
by the RSA, found that while 96% of motorists say they always use a seat belt as a driver, this figure drops to 83% when people are travelling in the back seat of a car. Minister of State in the Department of Transport, Hildegarde Naughton TD: “If you are over 17, you are legally responsible for wearing your seat belt in a vehicle. While a seat belt won’t prevent a crash, it could save your life if you are involved in a collision. This should be reason enough to wear one. No matter how long or short your journey, always wear a seat belt because as we have heard all too often from survivors of collisions – all it takes is a split second for a
crash to happen.” Sam Waide, CEO of the RSA, said: “Seat belts are proven life savers and putting one on before starting a journey is second nature for most of us. Unfortunately, the collision data and our recent attitudinal study shows that there are some who take huge risks by not wearing one. “I am concerned that only 83% of rear seat passengers tell us they always use a seat belt. Not being restrained in the back seat of a car means that in the event of a collision, you will be thrown around the vehicle at extremely high force, risking serious injury to both yourself and others in the car.

“Failing to put on your seat belt doesn’t just increase the likelihood of you being killed or seriously injured, it’s a potential killer behaviour. I would argue that not wearing a seat belt is not just dangerous but selfish too. I would ask drivers to always ensure that they and their passengers are wearing their seatbelt before starting a journey.” Assistant Commissioner Paula Hilman, Roads Policing and Community Engagement, An Garda Síochána added: “Seatbelts save lives. Unfortunately emergency services personnel including Gardaí, continue to arrive at scenes of traffic collisions and witness firsthand the devastating injuries sustained by drivers and passengers because they were not wearing a seatbelt. Provisional data from 2021, shows that 27%* of
drivers and passengers killed in road traffic collisions, were not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. Last year Gardaí issued 7,248 Fixed charge penalty notices for seat belt offences. This figure shows that a high number of people continue to take unnecessary risks on our roads, are not listening to advice or changing their behaviour.” “Every occupant in a vehicle is required by law to wear a seat belt and the responsibility lies with the driver to ensure that all people under the age of 17 wear a seatbelt or have a proper child restraint. If a driver is detected not wearing a seatbelt, they risk
three penalty points and a fine of €60. Passengers over 17 may be fined €60 for not wearing a seatbelt. Seatbelt compliance is one of our priority lifesaver enforcement areas for 2022. Our message from An Garda Síochána is clear –
“Seat belts save lives, please wear them.” Wearing a seat belt reduces the risk of death among drivers and front seat passengers by half, and the risk of death and serious injuries among rear seat occupants by a quarter.

he DS 3 CROSSBACK is a luxury compact SUV that combines refinement and technology with a striking design that enables it to stand out as modern, sophisticated and elegant. he dedicated European version of the best-selling Kia Sportage has been carefully crafted to establish new benchmarks across the SUV segment in Europe. It combines a sleek yet muscular and modern exterior design with a cutting-edge premium interior featuring a swooping integrated curved display that houses the very latest advancements in connectivity tech. Developed on a new ‘N3’ architecture, the European Sportage benefits from a European-focused high-tech engineering program that has realized an optimal wheelbase and ideal dimensions and proportions for European roads. This meticulous approach has helped create an SUV that is a perfect fit for European requirements, underscoring its everyday practicality and usability. Such a progressive and tailored package has also resulted in improved luggage capacity, headroom and legroom compared to the outgoing Sportage model, with outstanding legroom for the secondrow passengers. State-of-the-art hybrid powertrains further enhance the European Sportage’s capabilities, serving to dramatically reduce emissions and enhance fuel economy. An advanced plug-in hybrid (PHEV) model represents another first for the European Sportage, realising eco-friendly electric-only driving that can cover most daily trips from the home to work or for daily shopping needs. The all-new fifth-generation Sportage also debuts a high-tech hybrid (HEV) variant and a mildhybrid (MHEV) gasoline powertrain. The very latest internal combustion clean petrol and diesel engines are also available, ensuring
that the new Sportage can meet a wide breadth of customer needs and requirements. The diesel engine can also be paired with the MHEV tech, serving to further reduce emissions and improve overall fuel economy. The Kia Ireland initial product offer features a choice of four powertrains and four trim levels. PHEV models will follow in Quarter 2. The entry-level K2 model comes equipped with 17” alloys, LED headlamps, dual-zone climate control, reversing camera with dynamic guidelines, auto dimming rear view mirror, cruise control with speed limiter, lane keep assist, lane follow assist and forward collision avoidance. The K3 adds 18” alloys, heated front and rear seats, power adjustable front seats and a 12.3” infotainment screen with Kia Connect (UVO connectivity ). The K3 HEV also features smart cruise control and highway driving assistance. Moving up a trim level, the K4 comes with exterior enhancements like matt chrome coated front bumper and door garnish, and silver painted rear skid plates. Comfort and tech features include beige leather upholstery, driver memory seats, ventilated front seats, curved 12.3” inch driver cluster display and wireless phone charger. The K4 HEV adds an additional safety feature – blind spot collision avoidance. The top of the range GT-line enjoys even more luxurious specification, with features including 19”alloys, special GT-line sports upholstery, GT-line exterior styling, sports pedals and smart power tailgate as standard.
