MAZDA MX5 VENTURE EDITION M azda will shortly be introducing their special Venture Edition of the MX5 to the UK market. It will be offered in both roadster and roadster coupe body styles. The roadster version will be powered by the 1.8 litre engine driving a five speed manual gearbox. This engine is not noted for its scintillating performance, delivering 93 kW @ 6,500 rpm, with 167 Nm @ 4,500 rpm. This level of output gives it a top speed of 194 kph (121 mph), with zero to 100 kph acceleration in 9.9 seconds. Combined cycle fuel consumption is 39 mpg (7.09 lt/100 km), with exhaust emissions of 167 gm/km, putting this version in Irish road tax band D, with a current annual charge of €481.

The roadster coupe version will be equipped with the 2.0 litre engine, which delivers 118 kW @ 7,000 rpm and 188 Nm @ 5,000 rpm. It drives the rear wheels through a six speed manual

gearbox. Top speed is 218 kph (136 mph) with 0-100 kph acceleration in a far sportier 7.9 seconds. Combined cycle fuel consumption is 36 mpg (7.8 lt/100 km), with exhaust emissions of 181 gm/km. This unfortunately puts it in Irish road tax band E, with a current annual charge

of €677.

The Venture Edition has Havana Brown, heated, leather covered seats, with a leather covered steering wheel and handbrake. There are matching door trims and piano black inserts in the facia. Cruise control and satellite navigation are

included in the standard specification, as is Bluetooth facilities.

Externally there are light gun metal alloy wheels, front fog lamps, a chromium plated grille and Venture Edition badging. The Venture Edition will only be offered in three colours, two of them exclusive

to the model. The exclusive colours are, Radiant Ebony Mica and White Pearlescent, while the third colour is Metropolitan Grey Mica.

As the Venture Edition is exclusive to the UK market, it will be produced in limited numbers; 250 roadsters and 550 roadster coupes.

or most of my life I have had this complete fascination with convertibles and open two seater roadsters in particular. In 1957 when Ford in North America introduced their Fairlane Skyliner, a four seater with a fold away hardtop, I was totally impressed with the idea. I was completely surprised when they discontinued the model at the end of 1959 and reverted to folding fabric roofs for their convertibles. At that stage I was unaware that Peugeot had in fact pioneered the concept in 1934, but then dropped the idea a year or two later. The folding hardtop seemed doomed to oblivion until Mercedes-Benz resurrected the concept with their SLK in the nineteen nineties. Since then many other manufactures have also adopted the style. One of the reasons given by Ford in 1959 for abandoning the idea, was that people found it too cumbersome from a luggage carrying and access point of view. At the time this made no sense to me, but in more recent times, when the style began to be widely adopted, I began to see the logic behind these complaints. As a result I now far prefer a quality folding soft top, for both roadsters and convertibles. However, I can see the logic from Mercedes-Benz’s point of view. With a folding hardtop, just one version of the SLK is needed to satisfy demands for both a coupe version and a convertible version.

Most sporty two seater roadsters are not bought for their luggage carrying abilities. In most modern examples, you can go away for the weekend or on holiday, provided you pack carefully and keep your requirements to the minimum. On that score this SLK is no different to the majority of roadsters on the road today. If you do not intend to lower the roof, then you can take a wee bit more luggage.

Unfortunately, with this current SLK, there is a major hitch. The spare wheel sits in a small well under the luggage floor. It is a very tight fit and it is flat, so that when you get it out you have to use the plug-in air compressor provided to inflate it. The problem that arises when you have it fitted to the car, is what to do with the punctured road wheel? It certainly will not fit

into the spare wheel’s storage well and it is too large to fit into the normal boot, even if you did not have any luggage in it. As far as I can see, your only alternative is to have an old style, luggage rack on the outside of the boot lid, to carry the wheel and its punctured tyre, until you can get it fixed. This is a potential every day operational problem and not something that just arises when you go away on holiday.

Being a high performance sporting roadster, the SLK naturally has a much firmer suspension than most cars of a less performance orientated nature. This is all the more noticeable due to the pathetic state of our road surfaces, be they city, suburban or rural roads. The car has a good grip and

roadholding with a positive feel to the steering. The steering itself is geared to give 2.75 turns from lock to lock. The leather covered steering wheel has a thick rim with a flattened section on its lower circumference. It has a good high quality feel, which certainly contributes to the overall driving pleasure. The test car was fitted with a seven speed G-tronic Plus automatic/manual gearbox, which also contributes to the overall driving pleasure. If you want to make the changes manually, there are two paddles on the underside of the steering wheel behind the two horizontal cross bars. contd. on page 6

The instruments and driving controls are well laid out for convenience and ease of use. The instrument binnacle contains two large analogue dials for the speedometer (left) and tachometer (right). Each also has a small round dial for fuel level (left) and engine temperature (right). The two horizontal arms of the steering wheel contain a number of selectors for a variety of different operations.

Over in the centre console there is a screen that serves both the audio related operations and the satellite navigation. Below this screen there is a panel with audio related selector buttons.

Below that there is a row of silver buttons for the heated front seats, airscarf heating and hazard warning. Below these buttons there is a panel for the hearing/ventilating system. The controls for raising and lowering the roof, are in unit on the centre tunnel alongside the two

Heating can be a very important function in a convertible, especially if you like driving with the top down.

I drove with the top down whenever possible. On one particular day when starting off the outside air temperature was just 3.5 centigrade. On most other days it varied between 4.5 degrees and 8.0 degrees. The SLK’s heating system was not the best I have ever encountered, but it was sufficiently good for me to enjoy my open top driving. I did try driving with the windows down, but the cold wind coming in over the side made it just too unbearable, so I kept the windows up all the time. As I had a good windproof coat, with a large collar, I did not really need the Airscarf outlets in the headrests, but from previous experience with the E-class convertible, I know that they can make a big difference if you do not have a suitable collar on your driving jacket. I

did not have driving gloves on when driving top down. The two circular air vents did provide sufficient warmth to prevent my hands freezing, but I have experienced a better flow of warmth from this source in other makes.

The heated front seats can be very welcome in these circumstances, especially as they are designed to offer three different levels of heat.

The system managed to keep my feet and legs comfortable.

They never got cold, nor did they ever get noticeably warm.

The test car was fitted with a 1796CC, four cylinder, turbocharged, direct injection petrol engine delivering 135 kW and 270 Nm. It has variable valve timing and comes with automatic Stop/Start. This level of power gives it a potential top speed of 237 kph (147 mph) with 0100 kph acceleration in 7.0 seconds. The BlueEfficiency package gives you the choice of three driving modes, Eco, Normal and Sport. For most of my driving, I found the Eco mode to be more than satisfactory. Exhaust emissions were 151 gm/km, so in this form the car fits into Irish tax band C, with an annual levy in the new budget now fixed at €330.

By EU testing standards, Urban cycle fuel consumption is 32 mpg (8.6 lt/100 km), Extra urban is 53 mpg (5.3 lt/100 km) and the Combined cycle average is 43 mpg (6.5 lt/100 km). That is pretty impressive, if you remember that this is a highly tuned petrol engine, delivering 75.167 kW/lt.

One of the basic difficulties as far as I am concerned, is that the basic price of the SLK is €49,700. The test car had

RENAULT BELGARD OPEN FOR BUSINESS IN SOUTH DUBLIN State-of-the-art showroom development to commence in April 2012 enault Ireland recently announced the acquisition of the prominent site on the Belgard Road in Tallaght for the development of a state-of-the-art car dealership. The location is familiar to Dublin motorists as for many years it was the site of the VM dealers, Belgard Motors.

Renault Retail Group opened the existing showroom in late December, and already there has been a steady flow of traffic.

The temporary showroom will remain open during re-development for new and used car sales. Renault Belgard have arranged for a partner to carry out service DECLAN O’GRADY and aftersales work until their own service centre is in operation.

The proposed development of this gateway site will be designed in line with Renault’s ethos and principals, encompassing comfort, style and convenience for its South Dublin customers.

Renault Belgard will sell and maintain the current Renault range of passenger and commercial vehicles.

Declan O’Grady, Dealer Principal at Renault Belgard told MotorMarket: “We are very excited about the development of this state-of-the-art facility, which will see over two levels of car and commercial vehicles displayed and fully accessible to our customers.”

The proposed new facility includes for the provision of a new state-of-the-art service workshop with up to 10 servicing bays and will include servicing of large commercial vehicles.

This development will be the Renault Flagship Dealership in Ireland when development is completed in October 2012.

By KEVIN FENIX www.twincam.ie he test car was fitted with the 1.6 litre diesel engine and a six speed manual gearbox. This gives it a top speed of 189 kph (117 mph) and a 0-100 kph acceleration time of 12.4 seconds. Being a diesel, it also returns a very satisfying fuel consumption. By EU testing standards, it registers 47 mpg (5.9 lt/100 km) on the Urban cycle, stretching to an excellent 70 mpg (4.0 lt/100 km) on the Extra urban cycle and averaging 60 mpg (4.7 lt/100 km) on the Combined cycle. That frugal fuel consumption has another advantage in that it gives low exhaust emissions of just 118 gm/km, putting the car in Irish road tax band A, the lowest level, with an annual charge, at current rates, of 160 euro. In these difficult financial times, that is exactly what motorists need; low fuel costs and low tax rates.

Like most modern diesels, the engine is turbocharged, with direct fuel injection. It is fitted as standard with a Stop/Start system, to help reduce fuel consumption when stationary in urban traffic. In operation it is smooth and quiet, with adequate power for acceleration when need. The only requirement is, that the driver is aware of the operating conditions and has selected a suitable gear for those conditions. The six speed gearbox is geared on the high side in the lower ratios, in the interests of fuel economy, so at lower suburban speeds you may only use third and fourth gear for smooth running.

Beauty is naturally in the eye of the beholder, but I certainly found the DS4 to be very much to my liking. How much of that is due to the fact that its was red, my favourite colour, I do not know. I loved the way the windscreen flows away back into the roof, giving front seat occupants an excellent view of the road and the scenery all around. At certain times of the year the sun, when it shines, can

be very low in the sky and that large windscreen could be a disadvantage. Citroen have thought of this and to neutralise its disadvantages, the roof lining and sun visors inside, can be slid forwards to reduce the large area of exposed glass and thus counteract the low rays of the sun causing too much discomfort.

Looking at the profile of the DS4 from the side, it looks like a sporty coupe. The front door handle is visible and behind the shiny black B-pillar, there is a large, arrow shaped side window. The side window line, front and rear, is enhanced by the chrome surround, top and bottom. It is only when you look more closely at the pointed end of the rear side window, that you notice the black arrowhead, which houses the handle for the rear door.

The sill line flows back prominently from behind the front wheels, then appears to sweep up over the rear wheel arch, before flowing into the tail lamps on either side. At the front the large black grille is topped by two silver bars flowing into the traditional

Citroen chevron. The large headlamp units flow back and incorporate the main and dipped beams, as well as the direction indicators. The fog lamps are low down on either side, ahead of the lower sections of the front wheel arches and incorporate strips of LED lighting along their upper and outer sides for the daytime running lights. Finally the car was fitted with attractive alloy wheels of a rather complicated design.

At the rear the large tail lamp units flow around the sides and into the boot lid. The bumper has a large black section in its lower edge, that houses rectangular exhaust pipes with chrome surrounds at either side and connected by a chrome strip. The sporty sloping roof line is emphasised by the rear spoiler, running across the top of the rear window.

Inside the upholstery was a mixture of leather and cloth.

Basically it was black but there were light coloured strips in the seat bolsters and silver edges to the instruments, ventilation ducts, contd. on page 16

with silver door handles and other bits of silver on the gear knob, steering wheel and the pedals. The roof lining too was black.

The front seats adjusted for reach, height, backrest angle and lumbar support. The lumbar support was interesting, as it is done electrically by a switch on the outer side of the front seat frame. There was an additional switch, which activated a massaging function in the seat backrest. The two front seats were comfortable and supportive, with their well bolstered edges.

Rear seat kneeroom and footroom was minimal. Entry was quite difficult as the Bpillar was positioned rather far back. While the seat would have been reasonably comfortable for two adult passengers, who would have had adequate footroom and shoulder room, with the convenience of a folding armrest between them, it was almost entirely unsuitable for three adults. A third adult would have made the shoulder room far too restricted for all three passengers. Headroom would be restricted for the centre passenger, due to the sloping roof and hard centre cushion, while the intrusion of the centre tunnel, would have compromised the foot room for all three passengers. The DS4 makes an ideal four adult passenger coupe, with its

sporty good looks and rear seating arrangements.

Obviously these reservations would not apply if your rear seat passengers were children or even young teenagers. The two outer seating spaces are fitted with ISOfix fittings for child safety seats.

The main instruments and driving controls are laid out for convenience and ease of use.

The large centre instrument is the speedometer. The intensity of the blue figures and backlighting can be varied to suit your preferences. There is a red indicator needle that travels around the circumference, indicating the speed.

Unfortunately the figures are far to small to be seen safely whilst driving. Fortunately the actual speed is also shown in a large digital readout in the centre of the instrument, which is both safe and convenient. The centre of the speedometer also houses a digital information panel that shows a lot of other useful information, like the total

distance recorder, trip recorder, door open and a whole more.

To the left of the speedometer is a smaller gauge for the tachometer. It is very difficult to see whilst driving, but on the plus side the engine speed is shown in white blocks that move around the circumference, below the blue lettering. Thus as you get used to the system, the length of the white band is easy to see and gives you a fair idea of the engine speed. The centre of this gauge also houses a gear shift indicator, that shows up in a large digital figure plus an arrow to indicate the change necessary.

Matching the tachometer on the right hand side is the fuel level gauge. In its centre its digital system shows the distance to empty, based on current levels of fuel consumption.

Over in the centre console, under the two air vents there is another digital information panel, that shows the date,

time, outside air temperature, average fuel consumption and other selectable information.

The audio/CD unit is below this, with the controls for the dual range climate control below the audio panel. The centre panel on the steering wheel has further controls for the mobile telephone operation, cruise control and audio related equipment. Between the audio and the climate control panels there is a red button for the hazard warning and a black one for the central locking.

A small panel on the facia, between the steering wheel and the driver’s door, has switches for opening the fuel filler flap, selecting Economy mode, deactivating the electronic stability programme and deactivating the parking assist system. The car had four electric windows and electrically adjustable exterior rear view mirrors. These controls are all located in the driver’s door armrest. The mirrors fold in automatically when the doors are locked.

In the Citroen tradition the ride and roadholding is very good. The variable ratio, power assisted steering, is geared to give 2.75 turns from lock to lock. Ventilated disc brakes are fitted at the front with plain discs at the back. The system includes anti-lock with electronic brakeforce distribution and emergency brake assist, plus an electronic stability programme with traction control. The four road wheels were shod with broad, low profile Michelin Pilot Sport 3 tyres.

When all the seats are required, the car has 0.359 cubic metres of luggage space between the luggage floor and the underside of the rear parcels shelf. If only the front seats are needed, the rear seat can be folded, the shelf removed and you then have 1.021 cubic metres of space at your disposal when loading to the roof.
