“I was more than happy with the driving experience” he R DESIGN model is a more sports orientated version of the V40. Amongst other things it has a lowered suspension, twin exhaust pipes, matt silver exterior mirror housings, sports style aluminium pedals, sports front seats, aluminium interior trim and 17” IXON alloy wheels. The test car was powered by the D2 1560 cc diesel engine, driving the front wheels through a six speed manual gearbox. The engine has a power output of 84 kW @ 3,600 rpm, with torque of 270 Nm between 1,750 and 2,500 rpm. This delivers a top speed of 190 kph (118 mph), with 0-100 kph acceleration in 12.3 seconds. While the acceleration my look a little on the tame side for a sports version, it certainly does not give that impression on the road. In day to day driving it was quite easy to be first away from the lights, when the green appears, even with the stop/start in operation. With five adults aboard, it cruised effortlessly at the motorway maximum of 120 kph (75 mph), with plenty in reserve for overtaking when required. Indeed it was so effortless, that you had to keep a constant eye on the speedometer, as the car would flow well past the maximum with the greatest of ease. Fortunately there was a large digital readout of the speed in the large central dial in the instrument binnacle, which could be clearly seen at a quick glance.

What surprised me even more was the car’s frugal fuel consumption. By EU testing standards it is credited with 70 mpg (4.0 lt/100 km) on the Urban cycle, This reaches an amazing 83 mpg (3.4 lt/100 km on the Extra urban cycle and averages 78 mpg (3.6 lt/100 km) on the Combined cycle. Exhaust emissions are just 94 gm/km, which is outstanding for a car of this size, comfort and performance. It is in Irish road tax band A2, with a current annual charge of €180 euro. Centrally positioned in the instrument binnacle, is a large round gauge. Around its circumference there is an analogue tachometer, with white lettering and a red needle. information section, that shows a number of different things, depending on the situation. For example this could be an unfastened seat belt in an occupied seat, a door open or not fully closed and similar information. Outside the circumference on the right there is a gauge that shows the pressure being applied to the accelerator. In its lower section it has a white reading of the speed set on the cruise control, with a white digital reading of the time below that. Matching this on the left is the engine temperature gauge, with a digital readout of the current fuel consumption in white lettering, in its lower area, plus a readout of the outside air temperature below that, also in white lettering. On the extreme left there is a white fuel level gauge. Matching this on the extreme right, is a gauge that indicates when a change of gear, either up or down, is recommended in the interests of fuel economy. There are buttons on the left hand horizontal arm of the steering wheel for the cruise control and on the right hand arm for audio related operations. The large panel in the centre console has the various buttons and controls for the excellent dual range climate control and the audio and associated systems.

WARRANTY/SERVICING

They are all easy to see and easy to use whilst driving. On the lower right of the facia, under the ventilation outlet, there is a switch for the headlamps and tail lamps. The driver’s door has the switches for the electric windows and the exterior door mirrors. The screen above the two central air vents, shows the temperature setting for the climate control and serves the audio system and satellite navigation when required. The lowered front suspension and the very sloping windscreen, give the car a very wedge shaped profile and this could be very good from an aerodynamic point

of view and perhaps helps to explain the effortless performance and low fuel consumption. The ride and handling are good, although I did not subject it to rally type conditions over narrow and twisting roads. It is after all a highly practical family car and not an out and out rally machine. The steering has a good feel with 2.7 turns from lock to lock of the leather covered steering wheel. The gearchange was far more unpredictable. Sometimes it was smooth and positive, yet at times it could be stiff and imprecise, especially when

selecting first gear. Perhaps this was simply because the car was new and things would improve as the various mechanisms had a chance to wear in. Overall, however, I was more than happy with the driving experience. Earlier I mentioned that the V40 is very much a modern family car with a sports flavour in the R DESIGN package. In its versatile family side, it can tow braked trailers of up to 1300 kg, with a weight limit of 650 kg on unbraked trailers. Normal luggage space. when all five seats are in use, is 0.335 cubic metres, but this can be increased to 1.032 cubic metres when only

EUROPE’S TOP SELLER

Ford’s Fiesta was the top selling small car in Europe and the second most popular overall in 2012. In fact it has been the top seller in Europe in three out of the last four years. In 2012, 306,405 Fiestas were sold in 30 European markets. In the UK it has been the best selling model every year since 2009. During 2012, 109,250 Fiestas were sold on the UK market. Since the Fiesta was introduced towards the end of 1976, fifteen million have been sold globally. The latest version will be introduced on European markets early this year, following its debut at the Geneva Motor Show in early March. The latest model will have the choice of two very interesting options, the three cylinder 1.0 litre EcoBoost petrol engine and an ECOnetic version of the 1.6 Duratorq diesel engine. This latter power source has exhaust emissions of just 89 gm/km.

In the UK Kia Motors has added “Fuchsia Blush” (Pink) to its five door Picanto model range. It is anticipated that the colour will appeal strongly to fashionable young ladies. If that is not what they want, white has been added to the top specification in the three door Picanto model range. The white three door comes with an impressive standard specification for a small economy car. Immediately noticeable are the special design alloy wheels and the red border around the chrome grille surround. The engine management system has automatic Stop/Start as standard. To help drivers parking in confined spaces there are reversing sensors. Peugeot gets off to a good start George Harbourne, Peugeot Managing Director said, “This is a great performance by Peugeot in Ireland and I am particularly pleased with the immediate success of the exciting new 208. Fuelled by Peugeot Ireland’s confident move to an extended warranty offering five years peace of mind motoring, our additional consumer offers of one year’s free road tax and a VRT price freeze, ensured our Dealer Network enjoyed strong pre-Christmas orders.” He continued, “What is particularly pleasing is this growth is being driven by consumer demand; it is retail business. A stylish, economical and award winning range, matched to a five year warranty, has made Peugeot the choice for many in 2013.” Peugeot has reported a 31% growth in registrations across its award-winning car range. The brand has taken 5% of the Irish passenger car market and 6.5% of the light commercial vehicle market, to give a total of 5.2% combined market share during the crucial first 10 days of January 2013. The results mean Peugeot is the number one French brand in Ireland and ranks in seventh position in the market place overall. The news comes as figures show an overall decline of 19.5% in the market. The newly launched Peugeot 208, Twin Cam’s Irish Small Car of the Year 2013, is fast becoming a best seller and accounts for much of Peugeot’s growth.

BENTLEY 2012 SALES Bentley sold 8,510 cars worldwide in 2012. The United States was its largest market with 2,457 sales, followed by China with 2,253, Europe with 1,333, Great Britain 1,104, Middle East 815, Asia Pacific 358 and Japan with 190. China was the largest market for models with four doors.

BEST SALES PERFORMANCE IN 108 YEARS Last year, 2012, Rolls-Royce had its best sales performance in its 108 years history. A total of 3,575 cars were sold. The United States overtook China as the most prolific market. RollsRoyce was also the clear leader of makes with prices in excess of Euro 200,000 per car. Sales to Saudi Arabia were up 63%, the Middle East up 26%, Mainland Europe up 21%, the Asia Pacific region up 18% and Germany up 15%. Currently Rolls-Royce cars are sold in forty countries around the world. In the case of the Phantom models, 95% have customer personalisation, while 73% of Ghost models have customer personalisation.
