The RAV4’s powerful 2.5-litre Hybrid Dynamic Force powertrain delivers outstanding performance without compromise. Producing

218bhp and a healthy 221Nm of torque, the RAV4 Hybrid can sprint from 0-100km/h in just 8.4seconds, and is capable of consuming as little as 5.6-litres of petrol for every 100km driven on a combined WLTP driving cycle.

PEUGEOT e-2008

I

nitially launched in 2013, the original PEUGEOT 2008 small SUV/Crossover went on to win the hearts of families in Ireland, and far beyond. Thanks to its practicality, versatility, raised ride height and comprehensive safety equipment, the ground-breaking 2008 became an instant success for the iconic French vehicle manufacturing giant.

Fast-forward 7 years, and in 2020 the all-new PEUGEOT 2008 graced our shores, which brought with it a massive amount of distinctive style, and substance too. A fresh design inside and out provided the new 2008 with classy visual flair, while bringing it into line with the rest of PEUGEOT’s latest models. Based on the underpinnings of the highly-acclaimed all-new PEUGEOT 208 supermini, the new 2008 benefits from a generous increase in height and length, and is actually one of the biggest cars in the small SUV class.

FULLY-ELECTRIC POWER The new PEUGEOT 2008 was initially offered with a choice of petrol and diesel engines which are shared with the 208 supermini, but these internal combustion engines (ICE) have now been joined by a fullyelectric power unit (badged e-2008) which features the

very latest battery electric vehicle (BEV) technology.

Unlike some EV’s, there is no compromise compared with an ICE model 2008 when it comes to practicality, as cabin and boot space are exactly the same regardless of the model or power plant chosen. In fact, the cargo

capacity in the e-2008 stands at 434-litres with the rear seat backs in place, and rises to a cavernous 1,467litres when the rear seat backs are folded flat.

Additionally, with 32litres of storage space located throughout the cabin, passengers will find it easy to store bottles or other items in safety.

EASY CHARGING OPTIONS The all-new PEUGEOT e-2008 is powered by a 50kWh battery and a 136bhp electric motor, but with a 100kW charging capability, topping up the battery from empty to 80% capacity can be completed in just 30 minutes, or seven and a half hours with a 7kW home wallbox charger, which most

owners will use for overnight charging at home.

The electric powertrain in the PEUGEOT e-2008 not only delivers low running costs (zero BIK for business users, and annual road tax of just €120, for example), but strong refinement too.

The new PEUGEOT e2008 is offered in Active, Allure, GT and GT Pack trim levels – exactly mirroring the trim levels in the petrol and diesel-powered PEUGEOT 2008 SUV, with an impressive tally of standard equipment across the entire model range.

Safety and security concerns are taken care of by the inclusion of Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB), Active Safety Brake (night function, cyclist and pedestrian detection), and a multitude of airbags.

EFFORTLESS DRIVING EXPERIENCE Producing 136bhp and 300Nm of torque through a single-speed automatic transmission, the e-2008 is

totally effortless to drive.

The car surges forward in a serene manner when you accelerate while remaining comfortable when driven over road imperfections and speed ramps.

The excellent ride and handling characteristics of the standard PEUGEOT 2008 carry through to the e-2008, while a light steering feel suits the car perfectly and follows driver inputs with great precision.

The e-2008 is capable of reaching a top speed of 149km/h (where permitted) and can sprint from 0-100km/h in as little as 8.7seconds.

The official WLTP battery range in the e-2008 is quoted at 310km, but I managed to record a 312km range when I fully charged the car from my home wallbox charger, so the figure quoted is certainly realistic and definitely obtainable.

The e-2008 is a brilliant car to drive on city streets, but equally enjoyable on a motorway journey too, while its slightly raised driving position provides great visibility for all occupants.

The e-2008’s roomy interior looks great and the upmarket looks are backed

up by excellent build quality, with the use of plush materials which can even give more expensive rivals a run for their money.

The dashboard surfaces are pleasantly soft to touch, while striking piano keystyle physical buttons that protrude from the dash look fantastic, and add a sense of occasion to every journey.

VERDICT, PRICING & WARRANTY The new PEUGEOT e-2008 is a sharp, modernlooking small SUV which has the ability to make some of its competitors look dull in comparison, and it makes a strong case for itself as a stylish, practical and extremely comfortable SUV, with the added benefit of low running costs and a comprehensive 5-year/ 100,000km PEUGEOT Vehicle Warranty for total peace of mind.

pel has revealed in all its glory, the all-new sixth generation Astra. A descendant of the legendary Kadett, the success story of the Astra, Opel's bestseller, began 30 years ago.

Dynamic as never before, with sheer, taut surfaces, and sporting the new brand face, the distinctive Opel Vizor, the Astra will be available in petrol, diesel and for the very first time, as a plug-in hybrid.

Designed, developed and manufactured at Opel's headquarters in Germany, the all-new Astra will arrive in Ireland in early 2022, with prices and equipment levels to be revealed closer to launch.

Boasting a muscular, confident stance, the new Opel Astra will launch as a sporty five-door with a lowslung look, yet it gains more interior space than its predecessor.

With a length of 4,374mm and width of 1,860mm, it hits the sweet spot of the compact sector. Thanks to especially short front overhangs, the new Astra is only 4.0mm longer than the previous model, despite the considerably increased

wheelbase of 2,675mm (+13mm).

The new Astra's practical boot with adjustable floor still offers the driver and four passengers 422 litres of luggage volume.

After the Mokka, Crossland and Grandland SUVs, the new Astra is Opel's first hatchback to benefit from the brand's bold and pure design philosophy.

The Opel Vizor, the new face of the brand first seen on the Mokka, with the Opel Blitz emblem in the middle, stretches across the front, making the new Astra look even wider.

Viewed from the side, the next-generation Astra looks especially dynamic thanks to the pronounced forward rake of the C-pillar. At the rear, the centrally mounted Blitz emblem also doubles as the latch for the tailgate, which is made of state-ofthe-art composite material.

A leap in time has taken place in the interior of the new generation Astra, where the absolute highlight is the next generation of the Pure Panel first introduced in the Mokka. This expansive, digital cockpit features two 10-inch seamlessly integrated horizontal displays.

Thanks to a shutter-like layer that prevents upward reflections in the windscreen, the design dispenses with a hood over the displays, to further enhance the high-tech functionality and ambience.

Opel designers have taken great care to ensure that the driver receives all the necessary information but is not overloaded with data or functions.

Key settings such as climate control can still be operated via physical

controls in the form of finely crafted keys, achieving the optimum balance between digitisation and intuitive operation.

There is no need for cables either since the new generation of infotainment systems can be connected as standard on all model variants to wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, operated by voice control or by touch.

Opel's ergonomic AGR seats enjoy an awardwinning reputation and the new Astra continues this long-standing tradition.

Certified by "Aktion Gesunder Rücken e. V." ("Campaign for Healthy Backs") the position of the front seats is 12mm lower than in the previous model, further enhancing the feeling of a sporty drive A wide range of optional adjustments are on offer, from electric tilt to electropneumatic lumbar support.

In Nappa leather-trim, they offer ventilation, massage for the driver and heating at the rear as well as the front.

Seats trimmed in stylish Alcantara are also available.

The new Astra is based on the third generation of the highly flexible EMP2 multi-energy architecture, with Opel DNA built in from the start of development.

The steering and lateral stiffness of the chassis are designed for high control.

Under braking, the new model delivers strong stopping power and remains highly stable in curves as well as in a straight line. Once the legislation is passed, Dublin City Council (along with other town and city councils around Ireland) will begin negotiating with SPIN (and other e-scooter companies) with a view to establishing 'Dublin Bikes' style services for the use of e-scooters.

It is widely expected that the roll out of such a scheme will be a way of reducing the number of cars driving into city and town centres.

HOW USER-FRIENDLY IS A SPIN E-SCOOTER? Having had the opportunity to put a SPIN e-scooter to the test recently, I can genuinely say that it is so easy to use in every way. Simply put one foot on the platform and push the scooter forward with the other foot, while

50 Years of ‘VORSPRUNG DURCH TECHNIK’ T

he Audi slogan ‘Vorsprung durch Technik’ is marking its 50 year anniversary this year. Even half a century after its inception, the worldfamous slogan of the Four Rings hasn’t lost any of its appeal. And each year, there’s a little bit more history behind it.

On this momentous occasion, the company is looking back at a plethora of innovations over five decades that demonstrate why ‘Vorsprung durch Technik’ isn’t just a slogan for Audi – it’s also an expression of the company’s future-oriented approach.

THE BIRTH OF THE SLOGAN 1969 saw the merger of Auto Union GmbH, headquartered in Ingolstadt, and Neckarsulmer NSU Motorenwerke to form Audi NSU Auto Union AG at the Neckarsulm location. The new company’s range of models spanned from the air-cooled engines of the rear-wheel drive NSU Prinz series and the watercooled four-cylinder engines of the front-wheel drive Audi 60 and Audi 100 to the rotary engine of the futuristic-looking NSU Ro 80.

The idea to communicate this technological diversity as a competitive advantage came in 1970 from Hans Bauer. The

employee in the Audi NSI advertising department devised the slogan that people around the world would come to recognize: ‘Vorsprung durch Technik’.

The new slogan made its first appearance in a largesized ad in January of 1971.

Soon, customers also saw it in Audi NSU brochures. Audi 100, Audi 100 Coupé S, Audi 80 or Audi 50 – they all now represented ‘Vorsprung durch Technik’. The slogan was adapted over the years in many ways, including ‘Audi. A nice bit of technology’ or ‘Audi. Relaxed driving with perfect technology,’ but the company soon returned to the catchy original.

With the introduction of the Audi quattro in 1980, the slogan was used more frequently in advertising. The largest illuminated advertisement in Europe at the time was installed on a high-rise along the A9 Autobahn at the exit for Ingolstadt-Nord: the reddish brown Audi oval with the slogan ‘Vorsprung durch Technik.’ The slogan became a clear part of the Audi Corporate Identity by October 1986, when it was also used in the sales brochures for the Audi 80.

Today, fifty years later, it’s synonymous with the company.

CHANGING TECHNOLOGY In a new special exhibit titled “Living Progress – 50 Years of Vorsprung durch Technik” debuting in December, Audi will show visitors to the Audi Forum Neckarsulm its passion for technology throughout the years.

But which milestones laid the foundation for the fact that ‘Vorsprung durch Technik’ continues to represent the drive for innovation at Audi and that the slogan is still used in all Audi advertising? Not only was it the foundation for our rally successes, it also represents the transfer of our experience from racing into serial production.

Since then, quattro and Audi go hand-in-hand. Equally important was the first Audi A8 with Audi Space Fram technology in 1194, which helps us finally cement our place in the premium segment.”

The ‘decade of Audi’ was kicked off in Le Mans in the early 2000s. With new technologies such as FSI, Turbo-FSI, laser light, Ultra technology and hybrids, the

Four Rings dominated the renowned long-distance race as the unparalleled serial winner. The aluminium compact A2 1.2 TDI also made its debut: It was the first and, to this day, only four-door threelitre car.

The company made the next quantum leap in 2018 with the introduction of the Audi etron*, the first fully electric Audi vehicle to go into serial production, boasting a range of 400 kilometres and blazing the trail for premium electromobility. Three years later came the market launch of the Audi e-tron GT*,

revolutionary in its design and proof that the future of emobility will be exciting. The new brand campaign “Future is an Attitude” underlines the future-oriented approach of Audi to continually question age-old views of mobility.

At the end of the 2010s, sustainability became a core company goal. “This is why Audi is consistently dedicated to the environment, pulling together numerous measures for resource efficiency and reducing the ecological footprint in its locationindependent environmental program ‘Mission Zero,’” says

Hildegard Wortmann, Member of the Board of Management of AUDI AG for Sales and Marketing. The goal: for Audi to be carbon-neutral by 2050. “We are developing into a provider of sustainable premium mobility and want to be a leader here. Which is why we are focusing our efforts to be a technological leader on environmentally friendly driving.

It is in line with this that Audi will not be introducing any new models with combustion engines from 2026,” Wortmann explains. And the push for electrification continues: “We

are redefining advancement and focusing on sustainability, digitalization and electrification. It’s about making a contribution to a livable future with meaningful technology.”

As for whether the societal push for new technologies makes it easier for Audi to continue to push this advancement, Hoffmann says, “It has always been our prerogative not to be driven by change but to be drivers of change. In the age of new mobility, we don’t just see advancement as the highest art of engineering, state-of-the-art design and a digital experience.

We also think outside the car.

In the future, it will be more about comprehensive mobility solutions, which includes the matter of infrastructure. With the pilot of the Audi charging hub, we have developed a flexible quick-charging concept for future peak demands that can be used at various locations.” And Wortmann adds: “Audi will not rest on the technological advancement of the past years. Audi is the most progressive premium brand because we always view the future as an opportunity and shape it actively. ‘Vorsprung’ is a state of mind.”
