The open-style digital cluster is a major design innovation, enhancing the cockpit’s high-tech flair together with the new infotainment touchscreen, which flows seamlessly into the full touch console. TRIM, ENGINE & TRANSMISSION Trim levels in the new Tucson consist of Comfort Plus, Executive and range-topping Executive Plus, while an extensive powertrain offering consists of petrol/electric self-charging Hybrid (HEV) with 230PS,

Smartstream internal combustion petrol (T-GDi) and diesel (CRDi) engines with 150PS and 115Ps respectively, and 48V Mild Hybrid T-GDi (150PS or 180PS) or CRDi (136PS) engines – all of which are 1.6-litres in capacity. The Tucson Hybrid comes with a six-speed automatic transmission as standard, while six-speed manual or seven-speed automatic transmissions are available in 48V Mild Hybrid models, with internal combustion engines coming in six-speed manual guise only.

The Tucson HEV has two driving modes which are controlled by a small switch at the base of the centre console. The car defaults to Eco, which is the best mode for everyday driving, while moving into Sport mode increases the amount of assistance the electric motor can give to provide a sporty performance. Additonally, moving into Sport mode flashes red graphics onto the digital instrument panel for added visual appeal.

The Tucson Hybrid’s total system power is 227bhp (230PS), with 264Nm of torque available from usefully low revs, leading to a 0-100km/h sprint time of just 8.0-seconds. A top speed of 193km/h is achieveable (where permitted), while official WLTP (real world driving) fuel consumption as low as 4.8l/100km on a combined driving cycle is impressive.

The Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor in the Tucson Hybrid is connected to a Lithium-ion Polymer battery which is located under the rear seats. This motor proves itself to be a relaxing companion around town, while an ‘EV-only’ mode light in the instrument binnacle makes the driver aware that only battery power is being used – even at motorway speed during light throttle loads. The Tucson Hybrid’s steering is light but accurate, with an impressive suspension set-up proving more than capable of soaking up broken road surfaces with ease, while still maintaining control and stability through corners. The increasing influence of ex-BMW M-Division boss Albert Biermann over Hyundai’s chassis tuning is evident in the new Tucson, leading to excellent rolling refinement and terrific driving dynamics.

VERDICT, PRICING & WARRANTY The all-new Hyundai Tucson really is a big step forward for the brand.

Hyundai is aiming to be included on the shortlists of not only mainstream customers but also some premium buyers – quite a leap from the company’s budget image of old. Pricing for the all-new Tucson starts at just €32,895 for the CRDi in Comfort Plus specification, while the Tucson Hybrid is priced from just €36,345. All new Hyundai passenger cars come with a comprehensive 5-year unlimited mileage warranty, 5-year AA roadside assistance package and a 5-year free vehicle health check package for total peace of mind motoring.

Its user-friendly twin digital displays deliver advanced graphics, new telematic features and full wireless smartphone connectivity, while the new Sorento is the first Kia vehicle in Europe to feature their cutting-edge BlindSpot View Monitor (BVM) technology. his ‘second pair of eyes’ for drivers is designed to enhance safety for Sorento occupants, and other road users, by eliminating a driver’s left- and right-side

blind spots, and is just one of a range of functions enabled by the Sorento’s new fully-digital ‘Supervision’ 12.3-inch instrument cluster.

BVM enhances drivers’ vision either side of the car when driving, and is operated instantaneously with the car’s turn signal. It displays a high-resolution video feed on the left or right side of the TFT-LCD instrument cluster if the driver indicates to change lane with another vehicle, or bicycle, hidden in their blind spot. The video of the blind spot briefly takes the place of either the speedometer or tachometer dial display (or the hybrid system gauge in Sorento Hybrid models), while still showing the

Powering the new Sorento PHEV is a 1.6-litre T-GDI (petrol) engine which, in conjunction with an electric motor, produces a healthy 265PS (263bhp) and 350Nm of torque for instant acceleration and ease of drivability.

A super-smooth sixspeed automatic transmission enables the new Sorento to sprint from 0-100km/h in an impressive 8.4-seconds, with a top speed of 193km/h obtainable where legally permitted.

Officially, the new Sorento PHEV can travel up to 56kms on battery power alone, and with the car fully charged before every journey, fuel economy of up to 176.6 mpg is achievable.

Body control in my K4 test car was very impressive – especially for such a tall and heavy car – while the instant power from the electric motor provided terrific punch from the get go.

A well-weighted steering feel, and premium-level damping, ensure that the Sorento remains composed over speed ramps and rutted road surfaces, while the car feels well planted on the road thanks to its AWD drivetrain.

The luxurious, ergonomic and well-appointed cabin of

the Sorento PHEV is a serene place to be, especially when the car is in EV mode, but even at higher speeds the engine does little to disturb comfort or refinement.

The cabin space in the new Sorento is hugely impressive, with ample leg, head and elbow room on offer for passengers in the first two rows of seats, with even the rearmost seats capable of accommodating a growing family.

Boot capacity is excellent too, with 813-litres of space available when the 3rd row of seats are folded flat , and 1,996-litres on offer with both rows folded.

FLAGSHIP SUV The Tarraco sits at the top of SEAT’s SUV family, as the bigger brother to both the Ateca and Arona, and is available with the option of 5 or 7 seats to cater for a multitude of lifestyle and family pursuits.

The Tarraco mixes stateof-the-art technology with dynamic and agile handling, while practicality, functionality and elegance also form part of the Tarraco’s progressive design.

The Tarraco was created for drivers who need the usefulness of up to seven seats and the practicality of a higher driving position, but are conscious of a vehicle’s aesthetics. These drivers will appreciate the Tarraco’s balance between selfconfidence and elegance, with this balance maintained across all three trim levels – SE, Xcellence and FR. The Tarraco utilises the very latest cutting-edge technology from its parent company, the Volkswagen Group, and also uses the MQB-A long wheelbase architecture that underpins

the Škoda Kodiaq and VW Tiguan Allspace.

DESIGNED FOR LIFE Bigger dimensions inspired the Tarraco’s design team to find a greater balance between aesthetic integrity and purposeful proportions. Even though the Tarraco is 4,735mm long and 1,658mm tall - creating a huge interior space and an imposing exterior - the overall design implies a lightness and agility, as well as a robustness and perception of space.

The front of the Tarraco features a prominent grille, giving terrific presence and character, while the sharp Full LED headlights contain SEAT’s trademark triangular signature, giving a distinctive and focused appearance.

Lighting technology forms an important aspect

of the Tarraco. The SUV uses 100% LED technology for both the exterior and interior as standard across all models, giving designers greater creative freedom, and the customer cleaner, crisper lighting as a result.

BE ALERT WITH SECURIALERT AND FORD D espite many people across Europe staying at home amid the pandemic, vehicle crime remains a problem, and is even on the increase in some countries. Car alarms can help to deter thieves.

However, in cities where vehicles may be parked on the street overnight, owners may ignore the alarm, not realising it is from their car, or fail to hear it altogether.

Now Ford has made its smartphone-connected heightened security system, SecuriAlert (formerly known as Guard Mode), available to car owners for the first time.

Once activated, SecuriAlert sends a notification to the vehicle owner’s smartphone if it identifies any vehicle activity, including attempts to open doors or gain access with a key, providing peace of mind to customers

when their cars are out of sight – or out of earshot.

HOW SECURIALERT WORKS Owners activate SecuriAlert when they are away from their vehicle. The feature is quickly and easily switched on or off – “armed” or “disarmed” – using the FordPass smartphone app.

Once active, it makes use of the vehicle's existing sensors to identify if an

Using the onboard modem, FordPass Connect, the car will immediately send a push notification to the owner's smartphone if it detects any activity involving their vehicle. The FordPass app reveals the time and reason for any SecuriAlert alarms – via the smartphone – as well as the vehicle's last known location.

If an attempt is made to

open a door using a key – an action that would not trigger a conventional vehicle alarm – SecuriAlert will still send an alert. This can be particularly useful in identifying attempts to access to a car using a cloned or stolen key. When the owner returns to their vehicle – to drive to work in the morning, for example – they simply disarm SecuriAlert via the FordPass app and continue on their journey.

CONNECTED FEATURES First introduced for commercial vehicles earlier this year, SecuriAlert is one of a suite of connected features now available to Ford customers.

he Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) recently announced that company car users can now apply for the EV Home Charger Grant. This now means that electric passenger vehicles owned or leased for an employee are eligible for the grant.

The current scheme provides a grant up to the value of €600 towards the purchase and installation of a home charger unit. The company vehicle must be primarily parked overnight at the employee’s place of residence.

Commenting on this development Minister for Transport, Eamon Ryan TD said: “We have set a very ambitious target of almost a million electric vehicles on the road by 2030 to help us meet our climate goals and reduce air pollution at the same time.

It’s very encouraging to see the rapid increase in EV sales. We particularly want to

encourage companies to switch to electric and make their businesses more sustainable. We are making it easier and more attractive to do that by extending the home charger grant to employees who need to use a company car for business purposes.”

Declan Meally, Director Business, Public Sector and Transport at SEAI said: “This development will further facilitate those who drive company cars and those businesses who are working towards reducing their carbon footprint by switching their company passenger vehicles to EVs. Home charging is convenient, cost effective and environmentally friendly. Today it accounts for 80% of EV charging sessions and we see that continuing into the future.”
