Citroen DS3 110 PureTech Launched in 2010, the DS3 has recorded sales in excess of 320,000 units to date. Updates for 2015 include a new six speed automatic transmission coupled to the three cylinder PureTech 110 petrol engine. The new six speed automatic gearbox, gives smoother faster changes, while the 110 PureTech engine gives higher levels of torque at lower engine speeds. Together they provide lower fuel consumption and exhaust emissions with no loss of performance. By EU testing standards this combination has a Combined cycle fuel consumption of 4.7 lt/100 km (60 mpg) with exhaust emissions of 108 gm/km. This new addition to the DS3 range is scheduled to go on sale in Ireland in July with a recommended retail price of €23,995.

VW Golf GTE The Volkswagen Golf GTE is due to go on sale in Ireland in July, priced from €38,495. The styling is similar to that of the Golf GTI, but where the GTI has red highlights, the GTE has blue. Like all Hybrid models, the Golf GTE has a combination of electric and internal combustion engine power. The electric traction motor has a power output of 75 kW and draws its energy from a 8.7 kWh lithium-ion battery. It has an all electric range of 50 km (31 miles) and can travel at speeds of up to 130 kph (80 mph). When battery recharging becomes necessary,
VW Golft GTE it can be charged in two hours and fifteen minutes from a special domestic wall box, or three hours and forty five minutes from a domestic mains socket. The internal combustion engine is a 1.4 litre TSI petrol engine producing 110 kW. Working in
combination with the electric traction motor it gives a theoretical range of 939 km (577 miles). The combined power and torque offer a 0-100 kph acceleration time of 7.5 seconds, which is similar to the performance of the GTD diesel version.
Perhaps the most attractive feature of its combined petrol/electric power is a theoretical exhaust emissions of 39 gm/km and a Combined cycle fuel consumption of 1.6 lt/100 km (176 mpg). The Golf GTE only comes in the five door body style.

SUPER SILVER SUNDAY To celebrate its 25th anniversary, Silverstone Classic will be holding an event over the weekend starting on Friday 24th July and extending to Sunday 26th July. The biggest celebration though, will be the special Silver Jubilee parade, one of the many highlights on ‘Super Sunday’, which will see hundreds of silver cars taking to the famous Silverstone Grand Prix track. The spectacular parade is open to everyone with a silver car, old or new and has already attracted an amazing array, ranging from a 1934 Austin

In between the silvery cavalcade will feature a magical mix putting the spotlight on at least nine decades of automotive history. As you’d expect at an event that showcases close to 10,000 privately owned classic cars, the parade includes numerous iconic models from esteemed brands, such as Alfa Romeo, BMW, Caterham, Ginetta, Jaguar, Lotus, Marcos, Mercedes, MG, Porsche and TVR. However, the huge gathering also comprises a sizeable
number of today’s mainstream models, like Ford Fiestas, Honda Accords and Vauxhall Astras, all united by their sparkling silver bodywork and by owners not only keen to join the celebrations, but also to take full advantage of this rare opportunity to savour a memorable lap on Silverstone’s hallowed asphalt. Perhaps the anniversary parade’s popularity is of no surprise: the Classic is expecting its first 100,000 attendance in July and almost 25% of all licensed cars in the UK are silver coloured. The DVLA’s latest vehicle
statistics reveal that there are 7,250,300 silver cars on their roads, more than 440,000 of those alone being Mercedes models. While the organisers are thrilled both by the huge numbers and by the notable variety of the striking silver machines already entered into the Silver Jubilee parade, it’s not too late for others to grasp the opportunity. It costs owners of silver cars just £25 on top of general admission tickets, to be part of this milestone occasion. Moreover, they also benefit from parking in a special infield ‘Silver Zone’
and receive a special 25th anniversary car sticker. Adult admission tickets for Sunday are priced at £52 (or £77 for the Silver Sunday ticket) and include booking fees, access to paddocks, grandstands and the vast majority of the numerous attractions. eauty is, of course, in the eye of the beholder and in my eyes this latest Mondeo is superb in its exterior design, from its large chrome plated grille, through its flowing roofline with its panoramic glass roof, to its stylish rear end. Inside it just oozes luxury and comfort, so much so that certain German brands will have to look to their expensive laurels to compete with this latest Ford Mondeo. The fact that it was finished in Ruby Red just made it all the more attractive and appealing to me. The test car was fitted with the two litre, four cylinder, diesel engine, driving the front wheels, through a six speed manual gearbox. Automatic stop/start is fitted as standard. It was finished to the top level Titanium specification, but included a number of optional extras like the panoramic glass roof, heated front seats and steering wheel, leather upholstery and trim, Parking Assist, inflatable rear seat belts and adaptive LED headlamps. The Titanium specification includes as standard, 17” ten spoke alloy wheels, front fog lamps, climate control, SYNC 2 with 8” touch screen, heated windscreen, Lane Keeping Aid, traffic sign recognition, automatic lights and wipers, electrically operated folding rear view mirrors, front and rear parking sensors and a keyless start. The Titanium specification is priced at €34,345, while the optional extras fitted add €6,555 to the price, so the car as tested had an overall price of €40,900, excluding delivery and associated charges. By EU testing standards, its Urban cycle fuel consumption is 55 mpg (5.1 lt/100 km), Extra urban 72 mpg (3.9 lt/100 km) and Combined 65 mpg (4.3 lt/100 km), giving exhaust emissions of 115 gm/km, putting it in the current Irish road
tax Band A4, with an annual charge of €200. Practically all my driving took place in city and suburban driving conditions. The driving position is comfortable and the instruments easy to see. The car handles well with good roadholding, helped no doubt by the electrically, power assisted, rack and pinion steering. One difficulty I experienced was when approaching junctions where the traffic was light. On approaching the junction I would drop into second gear then move slowly up to the point where I could see traffic coming from the other direction. If there was nothing coming I would accelerate onto the junction, but invariably the car would stall. I found that I needed to change down into first gear to prevent this happening. Looking at the overall gear ratios there is a big difference between first and second gear, so the engine would be almost at idle in second gear in this situation and hence the reason for its stalling. There was never a difficulty when I changed into first. Top speed is said to be 215 kph (133 mph), but as this is well above the national speed limits, I was not able to check this myself. Acceleration from 0-100 kph is 9.3 seconds, giving the car a very satisfying performance in all driving conditions. As mentioned previously the instruments and driving
controls are well laid out and easy to see whilst driving. The instrument binnacle has two large round dials and a whole variety of digital information as well. The large round dial on the right is the speedometer. It has white lettering on a black background with a blue needle indicating the speed. At the bottom the blue strip is the fuel level gauge and in white lettering above it, it indicates the distance to empty at current levels of fuel consumption. Above that there is a car with a circle alongside. The circle indicates the current speed limits for that stretch of road if you are exceeding that speed and the limits are posted up on the roadside. The large dial on the left is the tachometer, which also has white lettering on a black background with a blue needle. In the top section between 4,750 rpm and 6,000 rpm, there is a red strip to draw your attention to the fact that you are in the upper limits of the engine’s performance in a particular gear. At the bottom there is a curved strip for the engine temperature, starting with blue and ending with a red indicator. Above that there is a digital indicator showing your current fuel consumption and the average fuel consumption.

FORD MONDEO 2.0 TDCi contd... Between the two large dials there is a variety of digital information showing things like the compass direction the car is pointing at, the total mileage recorder and other information when that function is in use. Selectors for a whole host of other functions like the heated seats, heated steering wheel, interior temperatures for the climate control etc., are in the panel below the centrally mounted 8” touch screen. The touch screen indicates the temperatures selected, and a whole lot of other information that has been selected. There are buttons on the steering wheel for the cruise control and the operations of your mobile telephone when connected. The driver’s door armrest has controls for the four electric windows and exterior rear view mirror adjustment. Lights are operated by the circular selector switch below the right hand ventilator, while the driver’s door has buttons for the operation of the central locking. The outer sides of both front seat cushions have buttons for selecting reach, height, lumbar support and backrest angle. The rear seat cushions are fixed, but the backrest is divided 60/40 and can be folded down onto the seat cushion in order to increase luggage space. The two outer positions are comfortable and well shaped and in spite of the sloping roofline still offer adequate headroom for passengers of average height. The centre section has a harder flat cushion, with a folding armrest in the central section of the backrest. When opened the armrest offers a covered storage space and two cupholders. In the space vacated by the backrest there is a hatch that can be opened giving access to the luggage area and this can be especially useful for long items of luggage like fishing rods, skis and similar objects. Unfortunately due to the harder substance of the centre rear seat cushion, adults of average height sitting there will find the headroom very reduced. It would, however, be perfectly adequate for children and perhaps even teenagers provided they were not too tall. The test car came with a Spacesaver spare wheel. When so equipped the available

luggage space is marginally larger. However, I am not all that enamoured of these skinny little tyres, so I would specify a full size wheel if I were buying the car. A Spacesaver is at least a whole lot better than one of those latex puncture repair kits. Normal luggage space, when all seats are occupied is 0.541 cubic metres with a Spacesaver and 0.458 cubic metres when a full size spare is carried. This can be expanded to 1.437 cubic metres when only the two front seats are needed, the rear seat backrests folded and you load to the roof, in cars with the Spacesaver and 1.356 cubic metres when there is a full size spare wheel. If towing is a requirement, this model can manage a braked trailer/caravan of up to 1800 kg in weight, or unbraked trailers of up to 750 kg. If you need extra luggage space and opt for a roofbox, it can carry up to 75 kg on the roof in a suitable, secure container.

CORSA OPC The new Opel Corsa OPC is due to arrive in Ireland sometime this month. It is powered by a 1.6 litre, turbocharged petrol engine, that delivers 150 kW and 245 Nm of torque. This gives the Corsa OPC a top speed of 230 kph (142 mph) with 0-100 kph acceleration in 6.5 seconds. Combined cycle fuel consumption is said to be 7.5 lt/100 km (37 mpg) with exhaust emissions of 174 gm/km. Power is transmitted to the front wheels through a six speed manual gearbox.

SONS DAUGHTERS awards for its style and performance in the supermini range. French manufactured, this car was the primary model of the premium DS line. Citroen have long been renowned for their outstanding diesel and THP petrol engines both in terms of performance and running costs. The DS3 can be customised with a whole range of technology including an MP3/CD player, cruise control and LED running lights. However, the style options that are available with this car really make it a popular choice. edicting who will buy which type of car has always been difficult for vehicle manufacturers, but nevertheless they do not make cars without knowing the target market and matching each model to specific demographic groups. There are naturally exceptions, but generally demographics play a huge part in how new models of cars are marketed. Large saloon and estate cars are usually aimed at families and are often driven by Dads. Mums tend to be less concerned with visual appeal and performance so are likely to choose MPVs or SUVs for the security that a bigger car offers. As people get older they are more inclined to drive a car that is reliable with cheaper running costs and perhaps some extra space for trips out with the grandchildren.
