he new Arkana is the first-ever Renault model to be born hybrid. It has been designed from the ground up as a hybrid model with a development focused on efficiency and driving pleasure. Renault’s Formula 1-inspired E-Tech hybrid technology benefits from their decade-long experience in building electric cars, resulting in enhanced driving pleasure, combined with reduced fuel consumption and tailpipe emissions. Renault’s smart E-Tech hybrid system always prioritises ‘pure electric drive’ to offer the best level of efficiency, and it will seamlessly switch between petrol and electric mode to optimise the driving performance. The Arkana’s hybrid system doesn’t need to be plugged in to recharge, as its clever system uses recovered energy from braking phases as the main source of power to charge the battery. There is also the usual tally of airbags, as well as a tyre pressure monitoring system and isofix child seat mounting points on the outer rear seats and front passenger seat. With the rear seats up, the load compartment has 413-litres of space below the load cover, but this can be expanded to 1,205litres when all of the rear seats are folded down when the need arises. Additionally, a foldable floor acts as a handy divider to hold shopping bags secure as well as enabling hidden, lockable underfloor storage. space to keep your charging cables easily accessible and well protected from dirt, dust and moisture. A lower section in this storage compartment is dedicated to the storage of a puncture repair kit, with the two sections divided by an easily removable load floor. CAR ON REVIEW My review car was a new Arkana RS Line E-Tech Hybrid (145PS) which looked particularly sporty in Platinum Grey metallic paint, with striking 18” RS Line grey and black diamond-cut alloy wheels with red inserts adding an extra dose of visual appeal. Other RS Line-specific exterior features include a special front bumper with an aerodynamic blade, special RS Line badging on front wings, gloss black door mirror casings, extra-tinted rear windows and tailgate, and slate grey satin front and rear skid plates with chrome exhaust tail pipes. The sporty theme continues inside with a special carbonlook trim strip on door panels and dashboard, seat belts with red strips, black headlining material, aluminium foot
driving cycle, and produce CO2 emissions as low as 109g/km – leading to annual road tax of just €180.
pedals, perforated leather steering wheel with red stitching and RS Line badge, special RS Line leather and suede seats, and red topstitching on door panels, seats and on the central armrest. Electric adjustment of the driver and front passenger seats makes finding the perfect seating position a simple task, while interior ambient lighting provides added drama when the daylight fades. The Arkana RS Line also benefits from Blind Spot Detection, Easy Park Assist (hands-free parking), Rear Traffic Warning, Traffic Sign Recognition, Adaptive Cruise Control, heated front seats, heated steering wheel, EASY LINK 4G connected multimedia system with navigation, Android Auto™ & Apple CarPlay™, and Renault MULTI-
SENSE with customisable driving modes. Behind the perforated leather multifunction steering wheel sits a carbon-look dashboard punctuated with a red stripe, so drivers are constantly reminded of the sporty intent of the Arkana RS Line. The car handles well through corners and absorbs bumps in the road in a composed fashion, while a strong brake pedal feel is helped greatly by moving the automatic transmission gear lever into the ‘B’ regenerative braking mode. With 142bhp and 250Nm of torque on offer, the E-Tech Hybrid can complete the 0100km/h sprint in 10.8-seconds, achieve a top speed of 172km/h, consume as little as 4.9l/100kms on a combined
IMPRESSIVE INTERIOR SPACE Overall cabin space within the Arkana is impressive and, despite its sloping roofline, rear seat passengers can enjoy plenty of headroom, along with generous leg and elbow room too. The 480-litre boot in the ETech Hybrid (513-litres in the Micro-Hybrid model) is easy to access with its large hatch door and offers terrific space for luggage, with the option of dropping the rear seat backs to reveal a very useful 1,263-litre capacity when the need arises (1,296-litres in the MicroHybrid). PRICE & WARRANTY The new Renault Arkana is priced from just €30,340 (Iconic 140PS Micro Hybrid) with my range-topping review car specification priced at €36,540. For total peace-of-mind motoring, all Renault cars and vans come with warranty protection providing worry-free motoring for 5 years or 200,000kms as standard.
T
he Yaris Cross self-charging hybrid electric has been named 2022 World Urban Car by the organisers of the World Car Awards which was selected by the 102-member strong jury of international automotive journalists from 33 countries. Launched in 2021, the Toyota Yaris Cross hybrid brings together Toyota’s rich experience and know-how in hybrid electrification and SUV design and engineering, developed for Europe and specifically with European customers in mind. The Yaris Cross follows in the footsteps of the Yaris, named The Car of the Year in Europe in 2021. It carries the key qualities of the urban hatchback such as the ‘Big-Small’ packaging that maximises interior space and practicality, fourth generation hybrid electric power, the highest safety standards with second generation Toyota Safety Sense, a bold and youthful design and a genuine fun to drive character. Perfectly suited to the more environmentally conscious motorist, Yaris Cross can operate in electric mode for up to 80% of the time in typical city driving conditions, meaning no CO2 or NOx emissions. These unique attributes are combined with authentic SUV features, founded on a Toyota heritage of innovation that includes originating the now core market segment for recreational SUVs with the first RAV4 more than 25 years ago. Commenting on the award win, Zoe Bradley, head of marketing communications, Toyota Ireland said: “We are delighted that Yaris Cross has been awarded the highly regarded ‘World Urban Car’ accolade. The youthful and desirable self-charging hybrid electric is dressed to impress, and has quickly become a firm favourite in Ireland. Despite its compact size it features generous boot space, and along with low CO2 emissions and an affordable price point, Yaris Cross hybrid ticks a lot of boxes for both urban and rural drivers.” Starting from just €28,050 or €205 per month with Toyota Easy PCP, the Yaris Cross hybrid is perfectly suited to day-to-day use, but with an adventurous aspect that’s fundamental to a successful SUV. Yaris Cross blends the robust qualities of an SUV with more advanced dynamic driving appeal, thanks to the GA-B small car platform which gives it the basic strengths that have been so successfully delivered in the Yaris. The Yaris Cross proudly joins its multiple-award winning and highly acclaimed siblings in the Yaris family: the Yaris and GR Yaris.
DID YOU KNOW...?? # Jaguar was originally called the Swallow Sidecar Co. and, from 1934, were called SS Cars. After World War II, the company changed its name because of the notorious reputation of the Nazi SS, the paramilitary organisation that committed atrocities throughout much of Europe during the war. # M. Allen Swift, a resident of West Hartford, Connecticut, owned a RollsRoyce – a 1928 Phantom I, S273 FP – for 77 years. The car was given to him by his father on his 26th birthday, a reward for remaining with the family business. Swift is credited with owning his 1928 Rolls-Royce longer than any other Rolls owner and presented the vehicle to the Wood Museum of Springfield History two months before his death in 2005. 2 MotorMarket

Nissan aims to dramatically enhance collision avoidance
N
issan has announced a new driverassistance technology, which is currently in development, that utilises highly accurate, real-time information about the vehicle’s surrounding environment to dramatically enhance collision avoidance. At a Nissan facility here, a test vehicle was used to demonstrate how this technology can automatically perform collision-avoidance manoeuvres. Nissan’s “ground truth perception” technology fuses information from next-generation highperformance LIDAR, radar and cameras. The technology can detect the shape and distance of objects, as well as the structure of the area
surrounding the vehicle, in real time with a high degree of accuracy. Utilising this information, it is possible for the vehicle to instantly analyse the current situation, judge and automatically perform required collisionavoidance operations. This technology can also detect slowed traffic and road obstacles in the distance and execute lane changes accordingly. Importantly, the technology can also provide increased support to drivers in areas where detailed map information is not available. Takao Asami, senior vice president, leading global research and development, says: "Nissan has been the first to market a number of advanced driver assistance technologies. When we look at the future
of autonomous driving, we believe that it is of utmost importance for owners to feel highly confident in the safety of their vehicle. “We are confident that our in-development ground truth perception technology will make a significant contribution to owner confidence, reduced traffic accidents and autonomous driving in the future.”Nissan has partnered with cutting-edge companies to research and develop this technology and share know-how. The next-generation LIDAR, a crucial element, is being integrated into Nissan’s system in collaboration with Luminar1, utilising world-leading technologies. In the area of advanced collision avoidance control it is critical to develop highly accurate verification technology in a digital
environment. To this end Nissan is teaming up with Applied Intuition2, which has state-of-the-art simulation technology. Under its long-term vision, Nissan Ambition 2030, Nissan is working to develop vehicle control technology aimed to significantly reduce accidents by utilizing next-generation LIDAR technology. Nissan believes that in the upcoming era of autonomous driving, driver-assistance technology that can avoid highly complex accidents will be essential. Nissan aims to complete the development of its ground truth perception technology by the mid-2020s. It will first be available on select new models, and on virtually every new model by fiscal year 2030.

ALL-NEW NISSAN ARIYA FIRST DRIVE REVIEW By
BREDA CORRIGAN www.motoringmatters.ie
T
he new Nissan Ariya combines the pioneering EV (Electric Vehicle), crossover and performance expertise that has made the Nissan LEAF and Nissan Qashqai market leaders, and its arrival in local dealerships is set to revolutionise the EV market in Ireland. Building on Nissan’s strength as EV pioneers, the new Ariya features an outstanding Japanese-inspired crossover design, which is set to take the powerful performance and capabilities of zero-emissions vehicles to a new level. The Nissan Ariya all-electric crossover is designed to not only impress EV buyers but to also demonstrate Nissan’s commitment to meeting a growing demand for new electrified, autonomous, and connected technologies. TRIM & BATTERY OPTIONS Two battery options are available, a 63kWh battery that delivers a range of 402 kilometres, and an 87kWh battery that offers a range of 529 kilometres, making the nocompromise Ariya perfect for daily commutes, or longer road trips.
With the Ariya, you get the choice of front-wheel-drive or allwheel-drive, with all-wheel-drive versions available exclusively with the bigger battery, and you can get an ‘e-4ORCE’ performance version too. The entry-level Ariya produces 217bhp, with the range-topping model producing 394bhp. The Ariya can charge at up to 130kW, but you will still be able to top the battery up from 10-80% in 35 minutes at a DC rapid charger. Charging at home from a 7kW wallbox charger will take 14 hours to go from 0-100% capacity. In reality though, most EV drivers will never let the battery charge go anywhere near empty, so a few hours charge may well be enough for the vast majority of Ariya owners. The arrival of the new Ariya is a key element of Nissan’s
strategy to electrify its range, and to increase its electrification sales mix across Europe by more than 75% by 2026. Nissan is launching the car with two grade options featuring many of its innovative safety and infotainment features as standard. Pricing will start for the entry grade 63 kWh Nissan Ariya Advance from €48,995 (exdelivery) and rise to €66,995 (exdelivery) for the top-of-the-range 87 kWh Ariya Evolve (inclusive of Government grants where applicable). ULTIMATE STYLE & TECHNOLOGY The Ariya is Nissan’s ultimate expression of style and technology. The model’s 100% electric vehicle platform removed
fundamental limitations and allowed designers to take new approaches to existing components. This new philosophy is based on what Nissan calls Timeless Japanese Futurism – characterised by a distinctive Japanese approach conveyed in a simple, yet powerfully modern way. Designers have embraced it to communicate how an EV paired with advanced driving capabilities can offer a new perspective to design, function and the ownership experience. The new Ariya is the most technically advanced Nissan to date. It has been specially designed to meet the needs of tech-savvy customers, and to be a partner in an increasingly connected world, offering seamless, personal assistance and responses. Wireless Apple CarPlay, cabled Android Auto, a wireless phone charger, and Intelligent Personal Assistance Technology come as standard. Nissan’s Safety Shield System also comes as standard, including Intelligent 360° Around View Monitor, Intelligent Forward Collision Warning, Intelligent Driver Alertness, Intelligent Cruise Control and Lane Intervention, Intelligent Emergency Braking (Pedestrian & Cyclist Detection, and Junction Assist), Rear Emergency Braking and Cross Traffic Alert technology. Other standard features
8 MotorMarket
include ProPilot with Navi-Link, and e-Pedal. ProPilot provides hands-on assistance to help drivers stay centred in their lane, navigate stop-and-go motorway traffic and to maintain a set vehicle speed and distance to the vehicle ahead. The selectable e-Pedal function, which is also available in the Nissan LEAF, allows drivers to launch, accelerate and decelerate using only the accelerator. CLASS-LEADING SPACIOUSNESS The interior of the new Nissan Ariya redefines how drivers interact with technology. The minimalist dashboard is devoid of the usual buttons and switches. Primary control functions vibrate when touched and only appear when the car is switched on. The reimagined interior allows for an entirely flat floor, resulting in a wide, open lounge-like experience and the most spacious cabin in its class. FIRST DRIVE VERDICT Having had the opportunity to drive a pre-production Nissan Ariya around Mondello Park racetrack recently, I can honestly
say that I was extremely impressed by how easy the car is to drive. The Ariya’s light steering helped greatly with manoeuvring around traffic cones strategically placed on the track, and it accelerated incredibly smoothly on the straight parts of the track due to the rush of electric power on offer. My brief drive in the Nissan Ariya proved to me just how far Nissan has come in terms of electric powertrain development, driver involvement and overall desirability. I am looking forward to a week-long drive in the new Ariya in the months ahead, and I will provide readers with a full road test review then. The good news is that we can expect to see even more innovative and exciting new cars from Nissan in the very near future. The all-new Nissan Ariya is a stunning-looking, and extremely well-equipped electric crossover that can wear its iconic Nissan badge with pride. The Ariya is now available to pre-order at your local Nissan dealer, with first customer deliveries due to take place in July.

DUBLIN ‘CAR DEALER!’ ARRESTED IN LONDON T
he car trade in Dublin is breathing easier this week as a mystery ‘Car Dealer!’ has been arrested in London. The saga began when a man claiming to be from local garages started contacting respected garages and asking to do a deal on a car they had in stock. The scam involved sending a mechanic to come and test drive the car. The brazen mastermind then drove off in the car on a test drive that never ended! Two South Dublin garages allegedly fell for the conman and a further dealer, outside Dublin, was also taken in. A garage owner affected said “he was very credible and certainly knew the motor trade
very well and probably worked in the business at some stage”. A routine traffic stop in London brought the driver to the attention of the local police force. The Audi A6 he was driving appeared to have plates that had been cloned to another Dublin registered car. Follow-up enquiries led to a site where a VW Tiguan, which matched the description of a car that went missing from a South Dublin dealer several weeks ago, was recovered. The man in custody is from a large Dublin family that is known to Gardai. At this stage it seems a VW GTI is still missing and it is hoped that too may be located.
Pictured here is a CCTV shot of the alleged perpetrator as he prepared to drive off in the Audi A6.
Drivers reminded to keep a safe distance, slow down and check mirrors for cyclists M
inister of State at the Department of Transport, Hildegarde Naughton, the Road Safety Authority (RSA) and An Garda Síochána are calling on motorists to keep a safe distance and slow down when overtaking cyclists on both urban and rural roads not only during National Bike Week (which took place from May 14th to May 22nd) but every day of the year. The RSA and An Garda Síochána are advising drivers on safety issues that are challenges for cyclists and reminding road users to be aware of cyclists and to share the road safely. • Give cyclists the space to ride safe when overtaking them (at least 1 metre in speed zones up to 50 km/h and at least 1.5 metres in zones over 50km/h). Cyclists can be
thrown off course by sudden gusts of wind or when having to avoid uneven road surfaces. • Check mirrors and blind spots. Remember a cyclist could be in your blind spot so look carefully before you manoeuvre your vehicle. Take extra care at junctions and watch out for cyclists especially when you are
making a left turn. • If you or passengers are getting out of a parked vehicle, make sure you check for passing cyclists before opening the door. Hildegarde Naughton said: “National Bike Week is a great occasion to explore and take part in cycling activities across the country. All road users need to be aware that there will be an increase in the number of cyclists on the road over this period and, indeed, throughout the summer months. I’m calling on drivers to treat cyclists with respect and to share the road safely. “The new Government Road Safety Strategy is prioritising active travel and 50 high-impact actions that will make the roads safer and protect vulnerable road users including cyclists. This includes speed reduction measures in urban and rural areas and the provision of more segregated walking and cycling infrastructure.
“During 2021–2025, 1,000 km of segregated walking and cycling facilities will be constructed to provide safe cycling and walking arrangements for users of all ages.” Sam Waide, CEO Road Safety Authority said: “It is critical to understand that there is no hierarchy on the roads in terms of safe road use. Everyone using the roads has an equal responsibility to ensure good road user behaviour and to protect vulnerable road users, including cyclists. “The RSA would like to remind motorists to look out for cyclists by allowing extra space when overtaking cyclists, by checking their blind spot at junctions, when turning left and changing lanes. It is important to always anticipate a cyclist having to make a sudden move to avoid a pothole or obstruction. We all have a responsibility, whether as motorists, cyclists, or pedestrians to share the
road in a safe and responsible manner not only during National Bike Week, but all year round.” Chief Superintendent Michael Hennebry, Garda National Roads Policing Bureau, said: “Drivers are being reminded of the need to follow all the rules of the road and have a duty of care to cyclists, especially when overtaking, to give them a safe passing distance of at least 1 metre in speed zones up to 50 km/h and at least 1.5 metres in zones over 50km/h. “All cyclists have a responsibility to consider their own safety and the safety of other road users. Both motorists and cyclists need to be aware of their impact on overall road safety. “Cycling should be a fun and safe pastime, but cyclists also need to make sure their bikes are roadworthy and in good working order to include brakes, tyres, chain, and have lights and reflectors.

Motor industry appoints new SIMI President Antonia Hendron
A
ntonia Hendron, Managing Director of M50 Truck & Van Centre, Dublin was elected President of the Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI) at the organisation’s AGM held in Killashee Hotel, Naas, Co. Kildare. Speaking at the event, Antonia commented that she was looking forward to her term as President and outlined a number of clear priorities. “Firstly, I want to help position the motor industry as a leader and enabler of the green transition. We are a dynamic and innovative industry, and if policy makers and legislators are prepared to work with us, we will help them achieve Ireland’s ambitious climate targets.” Ms Hendron continued: “Consumers are the centre of this plan and for them to make the change to zero emission vehicles confidence is key. Therefore, there is an urgent requirement to create a second-hand electric vehicle fleet which can only
happen via a vibrant overall new car market. In this context, it is imperative that the Government continues the VRT and grant support for Electric Vehicle until 2025, at which time these supports can be reviewed and invest now in the public charging infrastructure.” With the green transition dominating the agenda for the foreseeable future, Ms Hendron remarked: “I am determined to ensure that the industry continues to focus on delivering high standards and supporting the training and upskilling of our people. “I also want to co-opt government support for apprenticeships and upskilling of our mechanics. The rapid rollout of electric cars means that our people have to be more highly trained than ever before”. With a full Cabinet position of Minister for Higher Education for the first time ever, it seems that the government is keen to invest in further training and especially in
apprenticeships. As the MD of M50 Truck & Van Centre, Antonia Hendron is actively involved in the commercial vehicle sector, serving as both the Chairperson of the SIMI VTN Committee and a member of the Society’s Management Board. The Vehicle Testing Network (VTN) are currently in transition towards their new 10-year vehicle testing licenses and she will assist as
much as possible to ensure that companies have a successful transition to their new vehicle testing licencing. In conclusion Ms Hendron thanked the members of the Society for allowing her the honour to serve as President and was delighted to continue to highlight increased female participation in the Motor Industry and at the highest level.
ABOUT ANTONIA HENDRON, SIMI PRESIDENT Antonia Hendron is Managing Director of M50 Truck & Van Centre, M50GSE and M50 Power Solutions, headquartered in Dublin. All three divisions evolved from the Hendron family business, founded in the 1940s. Antonia joined M50TVC in 2003 and in 2018 took over as MD from her father. With her eye firmly on diversification as a way to make business more resilient, profitable, and scalable, in 2009 M50GSE was created to provide maintenance and repair for ground support equipment at Dublin and Shannon Airports. In recent years, she added a third division, M50 Power Solutions, which holds franchises for Hoppecke batteries. Today M50TVC is one of Ireland's largest authorised commercial test centres. It also operates one of the biggest Mercedes-Benz & FUSO commercial dealerships, and this year it acquired the sole franchise to sell electric Mercedes-Benz vans in Dublin. Antonia serves as Chairperson of the SIMI’s Vehicle Testing Network. She cultivates a learning culture that directly empowers the workforce to play to their strengths and stay agile. Investment in staff training is key, including for herself; having recently completed the Chartered Institute of Directors Programme.

New Mercedes-Benz EQE launched
E
QE – the new allelectric version of the popular Mercedes-Benz E-Class series – has been launched on the Irish market. Arriving with it was EQS, the electricpowered S-Class equivalent with which it shares many numerous styling and specifications lines. With the added appeal of electric power, the new EQE fulfils all of the expectations that E-Class owners wishing to embrace eco-friendly motoring might have. Internationally, four models make up the EQE range of which, here in Ireland, particular focus will fall on the EQE 350+ version. Coming on the market at €85,980, the EQE350 – which is equipped with eATS at the front axle – has a usable energy content of 90 kWh, combined electrical consumption of 22.5-19.7 kWh/100 km, combined CO2 emissions of 0 g/km), and 215 kW giving it a range of up to 654km (WLTP). Another model available at launch is a AMG EQE 43 (350kW) at €120,180. Coming later will be a EQE 500 (300kW) and AMG EQE 53 (with up to 505kW), both equipped with 4MATIC all-wheel drive and eATS at front and rear axles. In appearance, the EQE’s most striking feature is its ‘one-bow’ line and ‘cabforward’ design – styling that is evident also in the EQS and will likely feature on future electric models. Marking a departure from the conventional two or three-box layout, the onebow design approach is especially evident in the EQE’s streamlined body line – a front-to-rear design
approach first revealed in Mercedes’ own 2019 EQS Vision concept, since adopted in EQS production and replicated in the EQE. Slightly shorter than EQS in terms of overall length, EQE is comparable to the CLS in terms of its outer dimensions and visual appeal. Outstandingly modern,
its aerodynamic appearance is reflected in sculpted surfaces and seamless design features add to its athletic good looks. Flush mounted 19 to 21inch wheels and a pronounced shoulder section, helped by short front overhangs, a sharp rear spoiler and vibrant rear end design, accentuate its
coupé-like line. Inside, the EQE has plenty of space for passengers, with generous front shoulder room, longer interior and higher seating position. Boot capacity is 430 litres with a fixed rear window and boot lid. Interior design and equipment levels are heavily influenced
by the EQS – the MBUX Hyperscreen, automatic comfort doors and rear-axle steering amongst the optional extras. In terms of ‘peacefulness’ and comfort, Mercedes positions EQE amongst the ‘best-in-class’. In common with other Mercedes-Benz models, EQE embodies all of the latest
generation safety and driver support functions including ‘Hey Mercedes’ voice assistance and the many other infotainment supports that modern technology brings. Understanding the appeal it will have for EClass owners and motorists generally, Ciaran Allen, sales manager for Mercedes-Benz
passenger cars in Ireland said: “amongst dealers and customers, initial reaction to the coming of EQE has been extremely positive. “We are confident EQE will be another electric powered winner as motorists convert to more eco-friendly motoring in ever increasing numbers.”

MERCEDES-BENZ EQS
W
ith the introduction here of their new EQS, MercedesBenz brings luxury and electric power together. With their EQA, EQB, EQC, EQE and EQV luxury people carrier, its arrival also increases to six the number of electric powered passenger vehicles sold in Ireland whilst taking yet another major step towards their goal of having a fully carbon-neutral fleet inside the next 20 years. Book-ended by the EQA at the entry-level, the new EQS brings electric power to
the very top of its model range. Described by Ciaran Allen, sales manager for Mercedes-Benz in Ireland as ‘the embodiment of everything Mercedes-Benz represents in terms of luxury, comfort, safety and specifications’, EQS represents what he calls ‘a mould-breaker many of whose features will be seen in future EQ models’. Genetically modelled on the recently launched S-Class, it has additional features likely to be of interest to customers in that segment not least the economy and socially
acceptable appeal that electric motoring has brought. MODEL RANGE EQS comes in a choice of two model variants: EQS 450+ (with rear axle eATS electric motor) priced at €129,965, and a EQS Mercedes-AMG 53 4MATIC+all-wheel-drive version (with motors on front and rear axles) priced at €180,015. Powering them are Mercedes-Benz’s ownmanufactured batteries which, they claim, will have ‘better charging
performance and significantly higher energy density’. Helped by its lightweight components and Cd value from 0.20. It has an operating range up to 735 kms (WLTP), power output of up to 245 kW (333 BHP) and a quoted top speed limited to 210km/h. Electrical consumption is 18.9-16.2kWh/100km. COUPÉ-LIKE APPEARANCE Employing a new ‘modular’ construction method likely to be used in future battery-electric vehicles, its eyecatching cab-forward design and
BRINGS LUXURY AND ELECTRIC POWER TOGETHER coupé-like exterior point to its exceptional aerodynamics while headlight design, wheels and black panel front with ‘star’ inset introduce it as a member of the Mercedes-EQ family. Inside, a keynote feature is the optional concave dash-mounted MBUX infotainment ‘hyperscreen’ whose curved and flexed surface appears to float across the full width of the vehicle. Boldly going where no other infotainment screen has ever gone before, Hyperscreen is the futuristic face, and technological heart, of what has become a vastly advanced MBUX system. Now equipped with artificial intelligence and a ‘learning’ capability, it supports the driver in numerous additional ways beyond what was possible previously. Its ‘zero-layer’ feature allows drivers move from menu-to-menu simply by placing fingertip pressure on the screen. Not counting antennae, up to 350 sensors monitor the functions of the EQS as well as driver eyelid
movements and language. Its ‘Hey Mercedes’ function supports 27 languages helped by a ‘language understanding’ feature. A 15-speaker surround sound system produces an unusually expressive, natural sound while a highly efficient activated charcoal filter cleans incoming air. Motors in the seats deliver up to ten different massage programmes while seat heating and inflatable air chambers replicate the body-soothing effects of a ‘hot stones’ treatment. Reproduced on interior trim, wheels, and fascia is a Mercedes-Benz ‘pattern’ design based on a three dimensional star motif first featured on a 1911 Daimler trademark.
A fusion of high-tech and artificial intelligence features, it embodies over 40 new inventions and 20 new design applications to create what Mercedes-Benz says is ‘a car that appeals to almost all of the senses’. Amongst its other features is a ‘fragrance release’ system that screens unpleasant odours encroaching from outside. A relaxing collection of mood-enhancing ‘soundscapes’ includes one that makes EQS ‘acoustically perceptible’ on the outside. Optional is a ‘driving sound’ that can be heard inside and another that greets passengers acoustically when approaching and leaving the vehicle.

PORSCHE 911
By DECLAN GLYNN – www.motoringmatters.ie
25 YEARS OF THE 996 SERIES
W
hen it was launched in 1997, the 996 series of the Porsche 911 (Porsche’s most iconic model) was, and remains, the most radical departure from the 911 norm. Its reception was never going to be smooth, as the 996 series arrived with a water-cooled engine as opposed to air-cooled units that powered 911’s since their debut in 1963, and this move alone upset Porsche’s most devout 911 followers. The 996 series adopted more than just a new powerplant, as an entirely new body and chassis was also developed for the car that was produced from 1997 to 2004 (or up to 2006 for Turbo S, GT2 and GT3 models). REVELATIONS The introduction of the 996 series was regarded by many as a revelation, and it was billed as being the car that saved Porsche from bankruptcy.
Its stiffer, more modern structure could be built more quickly by machines rather than by hand, and it was the same story with the engine, while its closeness to the 986 Boxster resulted
in economies of scale that would see Porsche thriving, as opposed to merely just surviving. Contemporary reviews praised Porsche’s new 911 too, which is often ignored
today because the 996’s reputation remains unfairly tarnished by its subsequent mechanical issues. The main mechanical gremlin lurking within the 996-series was an Intermediate Shaft (IMS) bearing that could fail and cause catastrophic engine failure as a result. This didn’t happen to every 996-series 911 made, but many owners upgraded their car’s IMS bearing in order to avoid the massive cost of a new engine. RENEWED VIGOUR However, the 996 series ought to be celebrated and coveted, because it’s incredible sales success didn’t just bolster Porsche’s coffers significantly, it also ushered the entire company into a new century with renewed vigour and enthusiasm. It enabled cars like the Carrera GT to be built and it was the 996 series, not the Cayenne, that was instrumental in creating the company Porsche is today. That the 996 series also authoritatively restored the 911 as the benchmark sports car it remains to this day is largely overlooked. The 28 MotorMarket
reality is the 996 series was the right car at the right time for Porsche, and after 25 years its place in history is well deserved. CAR ON REVIEW My review car for this editorial piece was a 2004 Porsche 911 (996) Carrera 4S five-speed automatic in basalt black metallic paintwork, with black leather upholstery. Built between 2001 and 2004, the Carrera 4S was billed by Porsche as ‘a brother for the Turbo’, which related to the Carrera 4S’s adoption of the Turbo’s wider body and elements of its suspension. The Carrera name commemorates Porsche’s success in the Carrera Panamericana race (which ran from 1950 to 1954 on open roads in Mexico), while the 4 stands for 4-wheel drive, and the S for Speed. Without forced induction the Carrera 4S didn’t have any need for air coolers fore of the front wheels, so those shapelier rear wings did without side intakes. The Carrera 4S was also denied the Turbo’s rear spoiler. Instead, it featured
the standard automaticallyrising engine cover, under which sat the 4S’s signature reflective red strip that joined the taillights. Among 996’s the Carrera 4S is lauded as the ‘pin-up’ model, as it is the variant that is universally praised for its looks, in either Coupé or Cabriolet forms. Prices have always reflected this, with the Carrera 4S attracting a premium over its flatflanked C2 and C4 relations. This is bolstered by the Carrera 4S’s differing, higher standard specification. Underneath the gorgeous bodywork is suspension derived from the Turbo’s – albeit, not entirely identical. The suspension is tuned differently, thanks to slightly softer springs, thinner anti-roll bars and revised damper settings, with the Carrera 4S riding 10mm lower than the standard Carrera. The big red brakes came for the Turbo, while it shares the same wheel and tyre dimensions as its mighty relation. POWERFUL PEFORMANCE The flat-six 3.6-litre engine in the rear of the Carrera 4S produces 320bhp and 370Nm of torque, and this enables the car to sprint from 0-100km/h in just 5.1-
seconds. The automatically-rising engine cover mentioned earlier rises when the car hits 120km/h and this greatly helps the car to remain surefooted at high speed due to the downforce generated. The Carrera 4S is an incredible point-to-point car, and it is a sports car that is as easy to drive on the daily commute, as it is on a race track. Speaking of race tracks, the 996-series Carrera 4S completed a lap of the Nürburgring Nordschleife (20.83km in length) in just 8 minutes and 2 seconds. This represents a time which is 4 seconds faster than a Carrera 2 from the same 996-series, thanks to the Carrera 4S having greater traction, grip and braking performance. VERDICT Don’t be frightened of the Porsche 911 996-series because, despite its reputation, it is not the nightmare that the internet would have you believe. My advice is to do your homework in relation to the IMS bearing/engine rebuild situation, and buy one before everyone else reads this article and realises what a brilliant car they are missing out on.

All-new Kia Niro to accelerate EV transition
K
ia’s popular Niro crossover has been entirely redesigned from the ground up to meet the complex and diverse needs of today’s environmentallyconscious car users. Three state-of-the-art electrified powertrains, sustainable interior materials and exceptional safety performance combine to ensure the all-new version surpasses customer expectations. The redesigned Niro is an intrinsic model in Kia’s growing eco-friendly lineup, which will include 14 BEV models by 2027. The C-CUV segment is one of the most competitive, with a dizzying array of comparable models on offer. The all-new Niro illustrates Kia’s fresh approach to the traditional CUV and provides key differentiators to make it stand out in a crowded segment. A perfect blend of form and function ensures that the new Niro provides a safe, family-friendly vehicle with
favourable economic and environmental credentials that will encourage many people to take a meaningful first step into electrification. The all-new Niro smooths the transition to sustainable mobility via a choice of low- and zeroemission powertrains: hybrid electric (HEV), plugin hybrid (PHEV) and battery
electric (BEV). The HEV and PHEV models feature Kia’s superefficient Smartstream 1.6litre GDI gasoline engine. The battery electric Niro provides environmental and practical benefits with an estimated 463km (WLTP) electric-only range. The second-generation Niro benefits from a full
complement of Kia’s DriveWise intelligence Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) which operate to avoid potential hazards on the road and bring peace of mind to all. Forward CollisionAvoidance Assist (FCA) warns and stops the vehicle of possible incidents with other road users or
pedestrians, while Junction Turning and Junction Crossing functions provide an added layer of safety when negotiating turns and even stops the vehicle when there is crossing traffic from left or right. These are two of many safety systems included in Kia’s DriveWise technology that combine to improve confidence and
convenience behind the wheel. An intelligent Green Zone Drive Mode on Niro HEV and PHEV automates the use of electric power by taking location guidance from the navigation system, driving pattern learning or manual driver input. Built-up areas or roads nearby schools and hospitals are designated as
Green Zones, and the vehicle automatically switches to electric-only driving to reduce the exhaust emissions to zero in these environments. The customer can also take control of Green Zones along the route by setting other areas in which they wish to reduce their vehicle’s emissions, such as around their neighbourhood. The BEV version of allnew Niro combines its outstanding estimated 463km (WLTP) range with energetic and lively performance, producing 150kW of available power between 6,000-14,600rpm and instant torque rated at 255 Nm (26.0 kgf.m). With a top speed of 167km/h and 0-100km/h taking just 7.8 seconds, the Niro EV will enable drivers to make effortless and smooth progress in all conditions. Furthermore, Niro EV’s low drag coefficient of 0.29 ensures minimum aerodynamic resistance and maximum energy efficiency. The Kia Niro is due to arrive in Ireland in the coming months.

NEW VOLVO XC60 HYBRID
Premium Scandinavian Charm
V
olvo Cars has introduced a range of upgrades to its iconic XC60 mid-size premium SUV, including the addition of Volvo’s new Android-powered infotainment system with Google apps and services built in, making Volvo’s luxurious five-seat SUV smarter than ever before. For more than a decade, the XC60 has been ever-present in the top tier of one of the most competitive segments on the market. The XC60 has been Volvo Cars’ top seller since 2009, and it has reached over 1.8 million units sold worldwide. With a World Car of the Year title in 2018 as one of its most prominent achievements, the XC60 has amassed numerous global awards in categories ranging from design to safety. NEW, IMPROVED HYBRID POWERTRAIN The new Volvo XC60 benefits from the introduction of a new, improved Recharge plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain, significantly extending electric range (up to a projected 90kms on a single charge) while lowering Co2 emissions, increasing performance and improving drivability. A new long-range battery features a third layer of cells to increase nominal energy from 11.6kWh to 18.8kWh, with a more powerful rear electric motor now delivering 145bhp. The additional electric power results in a total combined output of 350bhp
and 455bhp for Recharge T6 and Recharge T8 models respectively, making the latter the most powerful Volvo car ever produced. The extra battery capacity also comes in handy on cold winter days, as well as in scorching heat, as drivers are able to preheat or pre-cool the cabin remotely via the Volvo Cars app, while still maintaining a generous amount of electric range. ONE-PEDAL FUNCTIONALITY With one pedal drive, and all-wheel drive, the XC60 Recharge performs with agility, while delivering relaxed control and a smooth, powerful drive.
In terms of safety upgrades, the XC60 now comes equipped with Volvo Cars’ latest Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) sensor platform, which consists of an array of radars, cameras and ultrasonic sensors. This platform enables the deployment of active safety systems such as the detection of other road users, automatic braking and collision avoidance. It also allows for gentle driver support from standstill up to motorway speeds, through the Pilot Assist function. While major changes take place deep inside the XC60, the company’s designers have also made a number of subtle
By DECLAN GLYNN – www.motoringmatters.ie refinements to the exterior design, including a new front grille, new front and rear bumpers, along with new alloy wheel options too. CAR ON REVIEW My review car was a Volvo XC60 T6 AWD Plug-in hybrid Inscription, which was finished in silver dawn metallic paintwork with contrasting charcoal ventilated Nappa leather seats for an upmarket look and feel. An outstanding, and seemingly endless, array of features come as standard in my review car specification. Key features include LED headlights with Active High Beam incorporating Daytime Running Lights, Front & Rear Park Assist, Rear Parking Camera, 19” double-spoke diamond cut/matt black alloy wheels with locking wheel nuts, 9” Centre Console Touch Screen, Voice Control, DAB radio, selfadapting air suspension,

panoramic opening roof, Bluetooth, wireless phone charging, leather upholstery, 2-Zone Electronic Climate Control with ‘CleanZone’ Air Purification System and Pollen Filter, 12.3” Active TFT Crystal Driver’s Information Display, and a multitude of innovative safety systems befitting of the Volvo brand. The supremely luxurious cabin in the XC60 offers ample space for up to 5 adult occupants, with 1037mm and 988mm of headroom on offer for front and rear passengers respectively. The premium look and feel within the XC60 is enhanced by genuine wood décor inlays that feature a pattern inspired by the natural forces of water, wind and waves. Additionally, a handcrafted crystal gear shifter in genuine Swedish crystal is made exclusively for Volvo by Orrefors, providing a genuine sense of occasion to every journey.
INSPIRING DRIVING DYNAMICS The Volvo XC60 is every bit as magnificent to drive as it is to look at, as the active chassis with selfadapting air suspension for all four wheels fitted to my review car as standard makes the mid-size SUV even more dynamic and refined. It maintains ride height automatically, and adapts each shock absorber to current road and driving conditions. At higher speed the air suspension lowers the car automatically to reduce drag and enhance stability, while an ‘Off Road’ mode increases the ground clearance to facilitate driving on rough terrain. Ingeniously, to make it easier to load or unload heavy items, you can lower the rear of the car by pushing a button inside the 483-litre boot. Producing 350bhp and 659Nm of torque, the supercharged and turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol engine works in tandem
with the electric motors to propel the T6 from 0-100km/h in just 5.7seconds, with the maximum speed electronically limited by Volvo Cars to 180km/h. The light, but well weighted steering provides drivers with great confidence in placing the car on the road, while overall driving dynamics are awe-inspiring. VERDICT & PRICING Volvo’s focus on safety means the XC60 is fitted with lots of potentially lifesaving equipment as standard, while a luxurious cabin, outstanding build quality, striking exterior design, and fuel-efficient hybrid technology make the magnificent XC60 one of the very best (if not the best) mid-size premium SUV on the market. It is, in my opinion, a BMW X3 beater in every respect. Pricing for the new Volvo XC60 starts at €65,615 (exdelivery). Annual road tax is just €140.

T
he year 2022 is an anniversary year for Opel: the company has been making innovations affordable for everyone for 160 years, whilst at the same time one of its biggest bestsellers is celebrating its 40th birthday. The Opel Corsa revolutionised the small car segment with its premiere in 1982 and today, in its sixth generation, is as successful as ever. Last year, the current Corsa was the most popular small car in Germany and the best-selling car in the UK. The battery-electric Opel Corsa-e won the Golden Steering Wheel 2020 and now already accounts for around one-quarter of Corsa sales. To date, 40 years after its launch, well over 14 million units have rolled off the assembly lines. The Corsa rolled off the production line for the first time in the autumn of 1982 in the newly built car plant in Zaragoza and immediately took off on its path to becoming a bestseller for Opel. At just 3.62 meters long. Chief designer Erhard Schnell had created a sporty small car with crisp, chiselled lines, sporting bold, flared wheelarches like a rally car. It had an exceptionally low 0.36 drag coefficient. The two-door hatch and notchback line-up was expanded in 1985 with the addition of the popular five-door model. The Corsa A became a highly acclaimed top seller with 3.1 million units built. Despite the success of Corsa number 1, the decision was taken to position its successor as a real 'ladies' darling'. Opel design legend Hideo Kodama set to work and created a much rounder, softer Corsa, with appealing 'saucer-eye' headlamps. The Corsa B was ten centimetres longer and much more spacious inside than its predecessor. It also introduced higher safety standards to its segment, including ABS cadence braking, side-impact protection and
front airbags. The second Corsa was successful around the world and topped the four million sales mark. In the spirit of never changing a winning team, Hideo Kodama was again asked to design the shape of the Corsa C. The Corsa grew again by ten centimetres in length and had a wider stance with a longer wheelbase, which greatly increased interior space. For the first time, the body was fully galvanized. The Corsa C also became a star performer and sold 2.5 million units. From this point, the three and fivedoor versions go their separate ways: the three-door Corsa had unique, coupé-like styling aimed at sporty customers, just like the original Corsa A. The five-door variant became a spacious, fully-fledged family car, just less than four meters in length. The fourth generation Corsa sold over 2.9 million units. Dynamic, practical and stylish, the Corsa E was also a bestseller with around 1.3 million units sold. At just over the 4m length mark, it offered high comfort and top technologies. Features included a heated steering wheel, heated seats, automatic climate control, front camera with distance indicator, Traffic Sign Recognition and Lane Keep Assist, a 7" colour touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The latest generation of the small car, which celebrated its world premiere at the 2019 Frankfurt International Motor Show, was launched with petrol, diesel and battery-electric powertrains for the first time. With a length of 4.06 metres, the five-seat Corsa's handling, practicality, safety, technology and comfort features remain exemplary. In Germany, the Corsa-e won the "Golden Steering Wheel 2020" and as a modified Corsa-e Rally, it is demonstrating in motorsport how top performance and environmental compatibility can be combined.

AN INTERIOR FOR PROFESSIONAL TASKS AND LONG JOURNEYS With its intuitive controls, digital cockpit and tabletstyle infotainment display, the Amarok’s interior has a functional, high-quality appearance. Such details underline the premium character of the pick-up. Further contributing to this as options are an exclusive sound system, the elegant leather-look surfaces of the instrument panel and door panels with distinctive decorative stitching. The vehicle’s premium positioning is matched by the seating. It gives all passengers the customary Volkswagen comfort: drivers and front-seat passengers
sit in the new Amarok on comfortable, wide seats, which can optionally be configured with electric, 10way adjustment. The rear also offers plenty of space for three adult passengers to enjoy the journey. There will be five trim versions of the new Amarok: the entry-level version is the ‘Amarok’. It is followed by the ‘Life’ and ‘Style’. To be offered by Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles as equal top versions will be the ‘PanAmericana’ (off-road character) and the ‘Aventura’ (on-road character). FOLLOWING IN THE WHEEL TRACKS OF SUCCESS More than 830,000 units of the Amarok have been sold to date in Europe, South America, South Africa and Oceania. The strengths of the successful premium pick-up: supreme drive systems, high load capacities, systematic functionality and an
authentic all-terrain design. Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles is further developing these strengths with the new generation. The new Amarok will launch in Ireland at the end of 2022 with double cab and four doors (DoubleCab), and in some individual markets with a two-door single cab (SingleCab). Alan Bateson, Director for Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles Ireland, said: “We are really excited to launch our new Amarok in late 2022, we have given the strength and power of the new Amarok an unambiguous expression with clear Volkswagen DNA, inside and out. “It will be great to reenter this important segment for us and to deliver a brand new experience for our customers with this amazing vehicle full of new innovation and premium design.”
New KIA Sportage Infused with Sportiness
T
he all-new Kia Sportage has arrived, and with it comes a bold design that has a clear resemblance to the amazing Kia EV6 (Irish and European Car of the Year for 2022), as well as the upcoming Kia Niro. The first two generations of the Kia Sportage were conservative and relatively unexciting, but the third generation really sent out a clear message that Kia could offer more than just value for money. The Mk4 Sportage raised the bar even further in terms of style, comfort, infotainment and efficiency, and went on to become a volume seller for the brand in Ireland, and right across Europe too.
STRIKING DESIGN The recently launched fifth-generation Sportage now faces stronger competition than ever before, but it is equipped with all of the right ingredients to excel in the family SUV market segment. The new Sportage has a striking, bold look at the front, a distinctive profile, and one of the most cuttingedge and tech-laden cabins in the business, while its engine line-up includes 1.6litre petrol and 1.6-litre diesel units, along with
hybrid technology in the form of mild hybrid (diesel) and self-charging full-hybrid (petrol) units. Trim options for buyers of the new Sportage consist of K2 (diesel only), K3 (diesel or petrol/electric HEV), K4 (diesel only) and the flagship GT-line (diesel with mild hybrid technology), with all variants available in front-wheel drive format only. PREMIUM LOOK & FEEL At the heart of the new Sportage cockpit sits a
state-of-the-art integrated curved dual display which is the focal point for all your driving, information, connectivity, navigation and entertainment needs. Boasting a 2680mm wheelbase, the refined cabin in the new Sportage delivers all the space a growing family could possibly need, with rear seat passengers enjoying a remarkable amount of legroom, while a host of clever storage spaces are easily within reach of all occupants.
By BREDA CORRIGAN – www.motoringmatters.ie Luxurious aluminium finishes on the dashboard and doors, finely detailed sporty air vents with semigloss chrome bezel, and ambient lighting infuse the cabin with sportiness, along with a premium look and feel. The ergonomic cabin layout is equipped with the latest breakthrough tech innovations - such as a Multi-Mode Touch Display that lets you easily switch between the infotainment and climate controls with a simple touch. The exquisitely crafted seats in the new Sportage feature soft-touch materials, sophisticated detailing and dynamic colour options, while the driver and front passenger seats innovate even further with an extracomfortable and sporty slimline design. Boot space measures in at an impressive 587-litres behind the rear seats, but this can be expanded to a cavernous 1,776-litres when the rear seats are folded flat - all of which is greatly helped by a flat floor that makes it easy to slide large loads in and out.
heated front & rear seats, heated steering wheel, driver power-adjustable seat with lumbar support, rear privacy glass, Telematics System with Kia Connect, dual-zone automatic airconditioning, electronic parking brake with auto hold function, rear parking sensors, reversing camera, Android Auto & Apple CarPlay, and a suite of advanced safety systems, along with many more comfort, convenience and infotainment systems. The Sportage full-hybrid (HEV) mixes a 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine with a 1.49kWh battery that feeds a 59bhp electric motor for a combined output of 227bhp (230PS) and 350Nm of torque. This powerful combination enables the Sportage HEV to sprint from 0-100km/h in just 8.0seconds, on its way to a top
speed of 193km/h (where permitted), with fuel consumption as low as 5.7l/100kms easily achievable on a WLTP combined driving cycle. Annual road tax is just €200. SOLID REFINEMENT On the road the Sportage HEV pulls away most of the time in pure electric mode, and the transition is smooth when the petrol engine kicks in. A relaxed approach to acceleration will be rewarded by solid refinement that improves further at cruising speed. In corners the Sportage keeps its body roll well controlled, with direct steering making it easy to place the car in the right position on the road. The Sportage is a very quiet and refined car, with little outside noise intruding
into the calm of the cabin, while excellent visibility from the driver’s seat is yet another major plus point. VERDICT, PRICING & WARRANTY The all-new Kia Sportage is a comfortable, practical and extremely wellequipped family SUV that is, in my opinion, one of the most stylish and distinctive cars in its market segment. Pricing for the new Sportage starts at €34,500 for the 1.6-litre (115bhp) diesel-powered K2 model, with the K3 petrol/electric HEV model I drove priced at €43,150. All Kia passenger cars come with a comprehensive 7-year/150,000km warranty as standard, along with a complimentary 3-year Kia Assist plan for ultimate peace-of-mind ownership.
TEST CAR DETAILS My test car was a Sportage K3 HEV, which was finished in ever popular pearl black metallic paint with black Saturn cloth and faux leather seat upholstery. Standard K3 trim equipment includes 18” alloy wheels, 12.3” touchscreen navigation, LED headlights,

After Qualifying second, only 8 hundreds of a second off the all important pole, Eddie Peterson managed to finish where he started in Race 1 after a tussle with Darragh Denning. Max Turley and Michael Cullen had a coming together as they battled for the lead leaving both of them on the grass. Peterson snuck through for the win and maximum points. An outstanding start to Motorsport Ireland Young Racing Driver of the Year Alex Dunne's Italian F4 Championship campaign saw the Offaly teenager leave Imola as the Championship leader. A tricky qualifying session meant Dunne started none of the three races higher than sixth on the grid, yet he managed to take a trio of podiums with P2 in Race 1, P1 in Race 2 and P3 in Race 3, to leave the iconic Italian venue with an 11-point lead in the series. Renault Scenic Vision concept car R
enault is writing a new chapter in its history with the Scenic Vision, an innovative concept car that brings the brand’s vision for a greener, safer, and more inclusive future to life. The Scenic Vision embodies the brand’s sustainable development commitments and encapsulates them in a single vehicle. Its intelligent design and manufacture incorporate methods that the Renault Group and its brands will use to achieve carbon neutrality in Europe by 2040 and worldwide by 2050. Notably, this includes Renault aiming for an entirely electric range by 2030. Outside, the Scenic Vision showcases Renault’s future all-electric family cars. Inside, it invites travellers into a new time, a
future where technology and innovation will make the world more sustainable and more environmentally friendly. The Scenic Vision concept car brings the most futuristic decarbonisation technologies to life today, and it embodies the three pillars of Renault Group’s sustainable development strategy: carbon neutrality, safety and inclusion. For example, 70 per cent of its materials are recycled and 95 per cent are recyclable – contributing directly to resource preservation. As a hybrid, utilising both electric and hydrogen power, it requires fewer and shorter stops. Its carbon footprint, including the battery, is much smaller, being 75 per cent lower than that of a conventional electric car and being a zero-emission car (in
production and in use). RENAULT SCENIC: THE CAR FOR LIFE AND FOR LIVING IS BACK An invitation to travel. This was the first Scenic concept car’s promise more than 30 years ago in 1991. Renault invented the compact minivan with a friendly family car that treated everyone to a oneof-a-kind travel experience – for life and living. With the new Renault Scenic Vision concept car, this car for life and for living is back, encapsulating a new vision for the family car. Its exterior design provides a preview of an all-electric model that will be unveiled in 2024. This C segment vehicle designed for long family journeys will come with all the advantages of the CMF-EV platform and will take well-
being on board to new heights. CARING FOR THE CLIMATE Renault Group is aiming for carbon neutrality throughout its operations in Europe by 2040 and worldwide by 2050. To get there, it is reducing carbon emissions across the board: through the materials and components it buys, the processes at its production sites, its cars’ emissions on the road, their second life and their recycling processes. 46 MotorMarket
The vehicle’s entire lifecycle has been optimised to meet this ambitious objective. UNRESTRICTED DRIVING Renault Scenic Vision’s hybrid electric and hydrogen powertrain has all the advantages of electric motors: instant acceleration, less noise, and no vibration. And no pollution because the car discharges nothing but water when you use it. There are several advantages to this platform
and this new kind of propulsion system: you can drive long distances only stopping briefly to fill the hydrogen tank (roughly every three hours) and they provide an appealing alternative to all-electric motors – even though they are still in the exploratory phase. A HIGHLY EXPRESSIVE GRAPHIC UNIVERSE The unique design of the Renault Scenic Vision is heightened by the choice of colours, where black and
white create a singular graphic universe. Shades of black on the outside, and white on the inside, offer a contrast of light and dark that reflects the design team’s wish for this concept car to be a work of art where artistic expression takes to the fore. On the outside, black hues are enhanced by an array of pigments and reflective paints that highlight the sculpted forms, where light and shape interact, giving rise to new surfaces.
