first saw a Citroen Picasso at a Paris Motor Show around six to eight years ago and I was tremendously impressed with it. When I saw this second generation model I fell in love with it immediately. It has stylish yet muscular good looks. It has the internal space and adaptability of its predecessor, making it an ideal family car, both for young married couples with young children and older people like myself. Its large windscreen gives an excellent view all round, while its panoramic glass roof gives a bright and cheerful ambience to the interior. It has one of the most sensible instrument panels I have ever come across in a modern car. It is comfortable to travel in and relaxing to drive. Its diesel engine is smooth and silent, yet it provides ample power and acceleration with a frugal fuel consumption. In this day and age when our government are intent on making us paupers at every opportunity, it has low exhaust emissions putting it in a comparatively low road tax bracket, with a current annual rip-off of â‚Ź200. It is comfortably at home in urban/suburban driving conditions, yet it will cruise along motorways with an effortless ease.

The test car was equipped to CODE specification. Thus besides the normal standard equipment like Bluetooth facilities, USB compatibility, cruise control with a speed limiter, LED daytime running lights and airconditioning, it also had the panoramic glass roof, chrome housings for the exterior rear view mirrors, and roof rails.The main instrument panel, is located in the top centre of the facia close to the base of the windscreen. It consists of three sections. The section on the right has a white background with black markings.

In the centre of this section there is a large digital readout of your actual speed. To the right of this figure there is a partial circle that is the tachometer with black markings showing the actual engine speeds. Along the base of the unit, reading from the left to right, are the total distance and trip recorders, while on the left hand side there is a a stack of black boxes showing the fuel tank levels.

The centre section of the binnacle, has a black background with red lettering, On the left it shows the time in large easy to read figures. The top centre right shows the outside air temperature, while the centre section below shows the day and the date.

When the audio system is activated the day and date move over to the left under the time and is replaced by audio information showing the station selected and associated information.

The left hand section of the unit also has a black background and is a warning panel with red pictorials indicating things like hand brake applied, seat belts unfastened etc. The three panels are all so easy to see, without having to take your eyes off the road. On the level section in front of the instrument binnacle, there is a cover that opens over a useful storage box. Adjustment switches for the exterior rear view mirrors and the two electric contd. on page 6

windows are located in the driver’s door armrest. On the lower left hand side of the facia, between the steering column and the driver’s door there is a rotary switch for the headlamp levelling. A stalk on the left of the steering column controls the lights and direction indicators while the one on the right looks after the wipers and washers.

The steering wheel adjusts for both reach and height and is geared to give three turns from lock to lock. The driver’s seat adjusts for reach, height and backrest angle. It is well shaped for comfort. Below the two central air vents there are buttons for the central locking, hazard warning flashers and childproof locks.

Below that there is a control panel for the air-conditioning, while below that there is a panel for all the audio associated controls and radio/CD unit. At the bottom of the centre console, ahead of the gearlever, the is a small but useful open storage space.

The C3 Picasso is relaxing and comfortable to drive. Top speed is a more than satisfactory 118 mph (174 kph), which is well above the speed limits in most countries within the European Union.

Acceleration from 0-100 kph takes 13.3 seconds, which while it my look somewhat slow on paper, is more than adequate for daily driving in city and suburban driving conditions. It was easy to keep up with, or comfortably ahead of, most other vehicles in the numerous daily stop lights grand prix.

The five speed manual gearbox has rather high

ratios, once you change down from first, so it is not uncommon to be limited to second and third in city and suburban driving conditions.

The high ratios do however have their advantages in the level of fuel consumption they help to deliver. By EU testing standards the 1.6 diesel C3 Picasso has an Urban cycle consumption of 57 mpg (4.9 lt/100 km), stretching to 74 mpg (3.8 lt/100 km) on the Extra urban cycle, which gives an average of 67 mpg (4.2 lt/100 km) on the Combined cycle. This level of consumption gives an exhaust emissions figure of 112

gm/km, which puts the car in the new A4 segment of the Irish road tax structure.

Seating space is provided for five people. The rear seat is equipped with two ISOfix fittings for child safety seats and the backrest is divided 60/40, so it can be adapted to carry both people and awkward items of luggage.

When all five seats are required, there is a useful 0.385 cubic metres of luggage space under the rear parcels shelf. If only two seats are needed, the rear seat backrest can be fully folded onto the seat cushions and you then have a huge 1.505 cubic metres of space at your disposal. There is also the possibility of folding a section of the backrest, giving yourself the opportunity to carry one or two rear seat passengers and luggage of various sizes, depending on the seat layout chosen.

The luggage space has an interesting feature in the double floor layout. The upper level raises the floor to be in line with the lower edge of the rear loading door, giving a flat and level loading space, with additional space below for smaller items. The upper floor section can be easily removed if smaller items with a greater height need to be carried.

Under the lower floor level, which is also easily removable is a Spacesaver spare wheel. plus the jack, wheel brace and other necessary tools.

The C3 Picasso can tow braked trailers of up to 1200 kg in weight, or unbraked trailers of up to 675 kg. If you have towing in mind, then you need to get a full size spare wheel. Fortunately the well below the lower luggage floor still has enough height to accommodate a full size spare wheel. You would, however, have to remove the black polystyrene tray that sits on

BMW M6 GRAN COUPE

F

ollowing in the footsteps of their leader, Mercedes-Benz, with their CLS four door coupe, BMW have now introduced their own four door coupe, the M6 Gran Coupe. As the M in its title suggests it is an enhanced performance version from their M division.

Power is provided by a twin turbocharged V8 petrol engine, with variable valve timing and direct petrol injection. The 4,395 cc engine delivers 412 kW between 6,000 and 7,000 rpm, with 680 Nm of torque between 1,500 and 5,750 rpm. Its specific output is a phenomenal 93.742 kW/lt. The maximum speed of the engine is 7,200 rpm. Power is transmitted through a seven

speed double clutch transmission. Top speed is electronically governed to 250 kph (155 mph) with 0-100 kph acceleration in 4.2 seconds. By EU testing standards, Combined cycle fuel consumption is 28 mpg (9.9 lt/100 km) with exhaust emissions of 232 gm/km.

However, if the M driver’s package is

specified, a top speed of 305 kph (189 mph) can be achieved. The transmission’s electronic management system offers Launch control for the ultimate in fast acceleration, automatic Stop/start, for a lower fuel consumption and Low speed assistance for increased driving comfort. The Active M differential distributes the engine’s power to the wheels in a manner designed to provide the best handling.

The steering is a variable ratio, hydraulic power assisted, rack and pinion design.

Besides the normal high performance braking system, buyers also have the option of M carbon ceramic brake discs. The car has M design twenty inches diameter cast alloy wheels. In the interests of saving weight, the roof is made from a carbon fibre reinforced plastic moulding and the suspension uses forged aluminium components.

NEW KIA CARENS

he new Kia Carens goes on sale in Ireland next week. It is shorter, narrower and lower than the model it replaces, but is built on a longer wheelbase. It is powered by a 1.7 litre diesel engine, similar to the one used in the Sportage SUV.

Buyers will have the option of three trim and specification levels (TX, EX and Platinum).

Recommended retail prices, excluding delivery and associated charges, start at 26,490 euro. Standard equipment on the entry level TX model includes Electronic Stability Control, Emergency Stop Signal, LED daytime running lights, front and rear electric windows, alloy wheels, rear spoiler, cornering lights, Bluetooth facilities and steering wheel mounted audio controls.

The EX specification adds automatic light controls, LED rear lights, rear privacy glass, folding exterior mirrors with puddle lamps, dual zone climate control, rear parking sensors with a rear view camera and folding seat back tables. It is priced at 27,790 euro.

NEW PRESIDENT FOR MOTOR INDUSTRY Paul Linders, Dealer Principal of Toyota dealership, Linders of Chapelizod, Dublin 20 has been appointed as the new President for SIMI (Society of the Irish Motor Industry) at their 60th AGM in Croke Park.

The family business, which is celebrating their 75th year this year, are expanding with the opening of a new Renault and Dacia dealership in Finglas, North Dublin in June. The new dealership will create 15 new jobs for the area and restore Renault to the North city.

Paul’s grandfather, Sonny Linders started a repair garage in Smithfield in 1938. In 1973 Linders became the first Toyota dealer in Ireland and in 2002 the dealership moved to Chapelizod.

At the Society’s AGM, Mr. Linders said: “The Motor Industry in this country is in deep crisis. It is as hard as it has ever been. However, history has proved that those of us who work in it are resilient. We must remain conscious of our place in this economy. The Motor Industry directly collects over one eighth of the total tax take of this country, over 13% or €4.5bn. Add to this the indirect contribution through PAYE, PRSI from the 40,000 employees working in the industry. As a sector, we’re one of the biggest contributors to the coffers of the State. We must ensure that our representatives in Government realise the impact of our success or failure on the health of the Exchequer. As Society Officers and indeed members, we must waste no opportunity to remind them.”

ROAD TEST

hen the Opel Adam was announced, we were told that there would be three trim and specification levels, Jam, Glam and Slam. Jam would be the basic level, Glam the luxury version and Slam the sporting version. I was told the test car was the Jam version, yet it is fitted with the top performing 1.4 litre engine, which tends to suggest it is the Slam version.

Its 1398 cc, four cylinder petrol engine is tuned to deliver 74 kW @ 6,000 rpm, with 130 Nm torque @ 4,000 rpm. This provides a top speed of 185 kph (114 mph) with 0-100 kph acceleration in 11.5 seconds, which is the top level of performance from the three engines on offer. Its EU testing standards fuel consumption is exactly the same as that provided by the lower powered version of the 1.4 litre engine.

One of the optional extras on the car were massive 18” diameter “Twister alloy wheels”, shod with 235/35 ZR

18 tyres, which all points to a sporting level of equipment. The ride was also on the firm side, which was all the more noticeable on the pathetic state of our road surfaces, especially in urban/suburban areas. Power is transmitted to the front wheels through a five speed manual gearbox. The gearchange is smooth and precise. The electric power assisted steering is geared to give 2.6 turns from lock to lock, which is also on the sporty side.

So much for its Slam related performance.

The interior, however, was finished very much towards a Glam specification. The two front seats are large and well bolstered. Both adjust for reach, height and backrest angle. On the test car they were upholstered in a mixture of leather and cloth. The interior was a combination of white and black, giving a bright and airy ambience with balancing contrasts. One optional extra fitted was the illuminated headlining, which gave a star studded sky effect to the cabin.

The rim of the steering wheel was covered in leather, giving it a comfortable, high quality feel.

It adjusted for reach and height.

The car is strictly a four seater. There are two individual rear seats and the backrest is divided 50/50, to enable additional luggage to be carried if required. Rear headroom is rather restricted, for any adult over average height. The kneeroom is also very restricted. ISOfix fittings are provided for two child safety seats. While the two doors are very long, which makes parking in our rather narrow parking bays rather difficult, access and exit from the rear seats can be quite difficult for adults, especially those of average height or above. Reaching in to fasten/unfasten small children into their safety seats may also be rather difficult. Luggage space is also very small, but can be increased if required by dropping the rear seat backs onto the seat cushion. This operation can be performed very easily, simply by pulling a looped strap that is attached to

the top of the rear seat backs.

A Spacesaver spare wheel is carried on the outside, under the floor. Under the boot floor carpet, there is a well with a polystyrene moulding that holds the jack, wheel brace and other associated items like a towing eyelet.

The layout of the instruments and driving controls is clear and easy to see, whilst driving. In the centre of the facia, below the two air vents, there is a large digital screen that serves the audio system and the satellite navigation when fitted. If neither of these are in operation, it gives a large digital readout of the time, with the date and outside air temperature in smaller lettering. Below this there are three dials and some push button switches for the air conditioning system. The left hand horizontal arm of the steering wheel has switches associated with the cruise control, whilst the right hand arm has audio system and telephone associated controls.

The main instrument binnacle has a large round analogue tachometer on the left with a small engine temperature gauge, whilst the matching instrument on the right is the speedometer, with a small fuel level gauge. Between the two there is a digital information panel that shows a variety of different information.

Standard equipment includes air conditioning, electric windows, Bluetooth mobile telephone facilities, with USB and auxiliary sockets, CD player, Cruise control, and daytime running lights. That seems to sum up a pretty impressive Glam specification.

When BMW brought out the new MINI, they decided to make it a style icon for well heeled fashionable young ladies and men. While its exterior styling was a copy of the original basic Mini it had nothing in common with the original. It did, however, prove to be highly successful in its intended market segment.

Seeing the success of the MINI, Fiat decided to compete

in the same market segment with a new 500 based on the styling of the original 500 introduced in the late nineteen fifties and lasting towards the end of the nineteen sixties.

While it relied on its retro styling it too had nothing else in common with the basic economy features of the original. It also proved to be highly successful in its intended marketing segment.

Citroen then decided that they should establish a presence in this lucrative market segment and introduced their DS3. Unlike it Fiat 500 and MINI it was a totally fresh design with its own unique features. Also it was of a size similar to that of the MINI rather than the smaller, more compact Fiat 500.

Now Opel has decided to compete in this market segment. Unlike the MINI and Fiat 500, it is a totally new design. Size wise it is similar to the Fiat 500. At the time of introduction Opel made no secret of the fact that it was aimed at the young and fashionable and would offer a massive range of optional extras, as well as colour and trim, so that buyers could virtually make their car unique to themselves. They seem to have been successful as the test car has attracted a lot of favourable attention.

No mention of trailer towing is made in the driver’s handbook, so I assume the Adam is not designed for towing. That would not be unusual, as it is a small economy car. However, if you do need to supplement the small capacity of the boot, it can accommodate roof loading of up to 50 kg. That weight limit includes the weight of the roof carrier and its associated mountings.

Excluding all options the base price of the Adam is 14,995 euro, but with all the options fitted the test car has a price of 17,810 euro. It comes with a two years unlimited mileage warranty plus one year’s roadside assistance and twelve years anti-perforation cover. Servicing is required at intervals of 30,000 km (18,000 miles) or one year, whichever comes first.
