ed is my favourite colour, so the Fiesta ST and I got off to a good start on that score. I also liked its sporty exterior styling, with its large sloping bonnet flowing smoothly into the large sloping windscreen and then into the curved roof line. Getting into the car the sporty aspect was further reinforced by the well bolstered Recaro sports front seats finished in red and black upholstery. I am not greatly impressed by black interiors, preferring lighter colours, but the red and black combination was very acceptable to my tastes. The instrument layout was both attractive and functional and the leather covered steering wheel had a comfortable, high quality feel. The one thing which I thought spoilt its sporty good looks, was the dark, privacy glass, used for the rear quarter windows. In my view it made the car look as if it had been converted into a panel van. Also I would have preferred the front grille to have had some shiny silver trim to set off the overall blackness.

Top speed is said to be 220 kph (137 mph), with 0-100 kph acceleration in 6.9 seconds. This perfectly underscores the sporting nature of the Fiesta ST. This exhilarating performance does not come at the expense of fuel economy. By EU testing standards, it delivers 35 mpg (7.9 lt/100 km) on the Urban cycle, 58 mpg (4.8 lt/100
km) on the Extra urban cycle and 47 mpg (5.9 lt/100 km) on the Combined cycle. One aspect that I found to be rather worrying, especially for a car with sporting aspirations, was the provision of a skinny Spacesaver spare wheel. After all, a sporting performance demands good grip and I fail to see how three wide tyres and a

skinny one could provide balanced grip, especially in wet and wintry weather, not to mention driving on narrow, twisting roads. Those considerations apart, driving the Fiesta ST was pure pleasure all the way. Its 1.6 litre, turbocharged petrol engine was smooth and powerful. The six speed manual gearbox was likewise smooth and positive. The ST could cope with city/suburban driving or open traffic free motorways with the same effortless ease. Its ride and roadholding, was likewise first class, which all added to the overall driving pleasure. The instruments and driving controls were all well laid out for comfort and ease of use. instrument binnacle contained two large, round, analogue instruments. The tachometer was on the left, and the speedometer on the right. Both had black backgrounds, white lettering and red needles, with red highlights. Between the two there was a digital panel at the top, that indicated the outside air temperature, the average fuel consumption and the engine temperature, while at the bottom there was an analogue fuel level gauge. A rectangular digital screen at the top centre of the facia indicated the time and the date as well as audio system related information. A large control panel below had all the selectors for the various audio associated applications and operations. Below this
ahead of the gearlever there was a small panel with all the climate control selectors. The left hand horizontal arm of the steering had additional controls for the telephone operations, when a suitable mobile telephone was available. Under the circular air vent, on the right hand side of the facia, there was a small panel with switches for the lights and headlamp levelling. Both front seats adjust for reach, height and backrest angle, while the steering wheel adjusts
for reach and height. On the driver’s door armrest there are adjusters for the exterior rear view mirrors, plus switches for the two electrically operated front door windows. The front seats slide forwards to facilitate entry and exit to the rear seats. Although the rear seats have three seat belts, the centre section is harder in both cushion and backrest compared to the two outer places. ISOfix fittings are provided in the two outer rear seat positions. The
backrest is divided 60/40 to facilitate the carrying of additional items of luggage. While performance is obviously at the top of the Fiesta ST’s agenda, versatility has not been forgotten. Luggage space, when all five seats are in use is 0.276 cubic metres. When the rear shelf is removed and the rear seat backs folded flat onto the seat cushions, this can be increased to 0.960 cubic metres when loading to the roof. Perhaps because of its sporting priority no figures were available for towing trailers or fitting a roof box for additional luggage. Suspension is based on conventional MacPherson struts at the front, while at the rear there are twin trailing arms linked to a inverted U-shaped beam with coil springs and telescopic dampers. A performance car needs a good braking system and the Fiesta ST provides that. The servo assisted, dual circuit system includes antilock, electronic brake force distribution and emergency brake assist. It works in conjunction with electronic stability control and torque vectoring control. Disc brakes are fitted all round, ventilated at the front and plain at the rear. The test car was finished to ST2 specification, which

he test car was fitted with the 1.6 TDCI diesel, equipped with Econetic technology and mated to a six speed manual gearbox. Automatic stop/start is part of the Econetic technology. The aim is to provide a good overall performance, with a frugal fuel consumption and low exhaust emissions. Suffice it say that they have been successful on all counts. Top speed is said to be 190 kph (118 mph), with 0-100 kph in 11.9 seconds. Considering that this is a big, comfortable, versatile, family car, that is more than adequate. Fuel consumption, by EU testing standards is 56 mpg (5.0 lt/100 km) on the urban cycle, 72 mpg (3.9 lt/100 km) on the Extra urban cycle and averaging 65 mpg (4.3 lt/100 km) on the Combined cycle. This gives exhaust emissions of 117 gm/km, so the car is comfortably positioned in Irish road tax band A4, with a current annual charge of E200. The test car was the five door hatchback model, offering a spacious 0.528 cubic metres of luggage space when all five seats are in use. This can be expanded to a very spacious 1.448 cubic metres when only two seats are needed and you load to the roof. Alternatively you can tow an unbraked trailer of up to 745 kg in weight, or carry 75 kg in a suitable roof box. If more serious towing is needed, it will accommodate a braked trailer up to 1600 kg in weight. That makes this Mondeo a very versatile, family car, with all the good looks and refined styling of a premium quality executive car.

The instruments and driving controls are laid out for safety, comfort and ease of use whilst driving. At the top of the centre console, below the two circular air vents, there are five push type switches. Reading from left to right they are for windscreen and rear window demisting, the central one is for the hazard flashers while the two on the right are for the automatic stop/start and the parking sensors. Below that there is a large panel for audio system associated switches. The top of this panel has a slot for CDs, with a digital panel below that shows the date and the time. Below the audio panel there is a smaller panel for controls associated with the airconditioning system. The instrument binnacle has two large round analogue dials and two smaller gauges. The tachometer is on the left with an engine temperature gauge on its top right, with a matching fuel gauge on the top left of the large speedometer on the right. Between the horizontal arms of the steering wheel there
are switches for the cruise control. The lighting switch is on the facia between the steering column and the driver’s door, with the controls for the exterior rear view mirror adjustments on the driver’s door armrest, together with switches for the four electric windows. Under the steering wheel, the left hand stalk operates the direction indicators and headlamps dipped or main
beams. The matching stalk on the right operates the washers and wipers. There are two cupholders in the centre tunnel, behind the gearlever and alongside the handbrake lever. Behind this there is a large covered storage box with a padded top, that also serves as an armrest for either the driver or front passenger. The steering wheel adjusts for both reach and height and
is geared to give a comfortable 2.75 turns from lock to lock. Both front seats are well bolstered and very comfortable. The driver’s seat adjusts for reach, height and backrest angle, while the front passenger seat adjusts for reach and backrest angle. The rear passenger seat has ISOfix fittings for child safety seats in the two outer positions. The backrest is divided 60/40 to accommodate awkward items of luggage. When folding the rear seats, the cushion, also divided 60/40 lifts, into a vertical position behind the front seat, allowing the backrest to drop into a horizontal position in the place thus vacated by the seat cushion. In the modern manner and in the interests of saving weight, a Spacesaver spare wheel is fitted. Unfortunately this is not really suitable if you are towing a trailer, so if that is a requirement, you will have to buy a full size space. That may reduce the available luggage space marginally. Hopefully it will fit into the spare wheel storage space. Independent suspension is fitted all round, based on MacPherson struts at the front and a multi-link system at the rear. An electronic dual circuit braking system is fitted and includes all the modern safety measures like anti-lock, emergency brake assist and electronic brake force distribution. It uses ventilated discs at the front and plain discs at the rear. It is linked to an electronic stability programme with traction control and hill start assist. The ride and roadholding is good, fully in line with what you would expect from a premium quality executive car.

Student road safety short annimated film
T
he Road Safety Authority (RSA) and Setanta Insurance Services Limited, together with the 58th Cork Film Festival, launched a new road safety animated short film called ‘Wheelman’, which educates young people about the dangers of using their mobile phone while driving. The script for ‘Wheelman’ was developed by Rory Nestor, a 6th year student from Ballyhaunis Community School, Co. Mayo, and was the winning entry in the RSA and Setanta Insurance’s road safety competition, ‘Keep Drama off the Roads’. ‘Wheelman’ transforms a scene from a criminal underworld into a strong message about road safety. The animated film is edgy, fast paced but the message is clear: taking your eyes off the road for just a moment can cause a serious collision. The film reminds us that using your mobile when driving makes you four times more likely to crash, and that when you take your eyes off the road to look at your mobile, you’re deeply vulnerable. It also reminds us that although we are often very aware of dangers we can see on the roads, so often the biggest danger comes from a simple distraction like a text message. ‘Wheelman’ is available to view on the website: www.keepdramaofftheroads.ie

In fact, they’re three times more likely to be killed in a road traffic collision than the rest of the population. We wanted to come up with a new way of connecting with this vulnerable group of road-users in a way that will get their attention. The film succeeds because it was developed by a young student who wanted to tackle the dangerous use of mobiles while driving among his peers, using a format that
they will readily engage with.” ‘Wheelman’ encourages young people to understand the risks associated with using their mobiles while driving. Of the unnecessary deaths on our roads, driver distraction plays a role in 20-30%. In this text and social media friendly generation, the mobile phone represents one of the biggest distractions in the car. John Beatty, Setanta Insurance said: “The competition invited young people aged between 15 and 25 to come up with a short film script to address the theme of ‘texting while driving’. We wanted young people to talk to us about
how to address mobile use while driving among their peer group. The winning entry, ‘Wheelman’, is engaging, challenging and provocative and really shows that young people are thinking about road safety and how it affects them and their peers. In fact, all the other entries were very strong, and it is great to see so many young people thinking about and taking action on road safety.” James Mullighan, Creative Director of Cork Film Festival said: “Cork Film Festival were delighted to partner with the RSA and Setanta Insurance to screen this film developed by this young, emerging Irish talent, with a powerful road safety message aimed at young people.” The RSA, in conjunction with Setanta Insurance, invited young people, aged 15-25, from all over the country to come up with a short film script for the ‘Keep Drama Off The Roads’ competition which addresses this issue. From a huge number of entries, three runners-up: Ming Flannelly from Kilmainham, Dublin 8; Jordan Murshed from Ballincollig, Co Cork, and Luke Mulcahy, from Cashel, Co Tipperary; and an overall winner – Rory Nestor, were awarded cash prizes. Rory also got to see his script – “Wheelman” brought to life by a professional film production company.
