n my view this Jaguar XF Sportbrake certainly has sleek and sporty good looks. Wherever it was parked it attracted a considerable amount of interest and attention from passersby. The interior was superbly finished in quality leather and set off with polished Burr walnut trim and special Jaguar carpet mats. It also had a modern touch with its matt silver facia flowing into the two front doors.

Power was provided by the lower powered version of the 2.2 litre, four cylinder diesel engine, driving the rear wheels through an eight speed automatic/manual gearbox. In the current Jaguar mode, the gear selector was a round knob that rises up out of the centre tunnel when the engine is switched on. If you want to select gears manually, you twist the knob to the S position and then flick the plus or minus paddles under the rim of the steering wheel, depending on whether you want upward or downward changes. I was more than happy to leave it in the automatic mode, as it is smooth and totally effortless and delivered all the power I needed in every situation.

Although the test car had the lower powered version of the 2.2 litre diesel delivering 121 kW @ 3,500 rpm with 400 Nm @ 2,000 rpm, it had all the performance I needed for my mainly city and suburban driving. With a top speed of 209 kph (129 mph), it was also perfectly at home on motorway driving, as its potential speed was well above most EU national speed limits. Its zero to 100 kph acceleration time is 10.5 seconds, which may be considered a bit slow by some people, but remember it is a large highly versatile family/executive car, not some two seater sports coupe.

higher powered version delivers 149 kW @ 3,500 rpm, with 450 Nm @ 2,000 rpm, which raises the potential top speed to 214 kph (132 mph) with 0-100 kph acceleration in just 8.8 seconds. Both version have exhaust emissions of 139 gm/km, placing them in Irish road tax band B2, with a current annual charge of 280 euro.

Fuel consumption, by EU testing standards, on the model tested is, 46 mpg on the Urban cycle, 65 mpg on the Extra urban cycle and 55 mpg on the Combined cycle.

While there is only a difference of 1 mpg for the higher powered model on the Urban cycle, its Extra urban figure is less frugal by 5 mpg and the Combined cycle figure is 6 mpg less economical.

steering giving, a sporty yet comfortable 2.75 turns from lock to lock. One of the optional extras fitted to the test car was front and rear parking sensors, with a parking camera showing the area behind the car up on the screen in the centre of the facia. The large exterior rear view mirrors help to make parking much easier, helped by the sensors and the rear view camera.

Both front seats are superbly comfortable and have electrical adjustments for reach, height, backrest angle and cushion tilt. The steering wheel also adjusts for reach and height, so finding a comfortable driving position for both the driver and the front passenger is no problem at all, regardless of their height. The two outer rear seat passengers also enjoy a high standard of luxury and comfort. There is a folding central armrest, with two cupholders. A third adult passenger can also be accommodated, but as in most cars today, the centre sections of both the cushion and backrest are harder and flatter and shoulder room for

all three will be much less.

ISOfix fittings are provided for child safety seats.

Dual circuit, servo assisted disc brakes are fitted. The system has an electric handbrake and uses anti-lock with dynamic stability and traction control. Ventilated discs are fitted front and rear.

The dynamic stability control function offers the driver the choice of three different settings, to cater for different driving styles and performance requirements.

By its very nature, the Sportbrake is designed to be a comfortable and versatile touring car for the well off. It fills this role superbly with a normal luggage capacity of 0.540 cubic metres when all five seats are in use. When

you need extra space this can be expanded to 1.675 cubic metres when only the two front seats are needed and you load to the roof. Between those two figures you have a variable amount of space for both luggage and passengers when you fold the 60/40 split rear seat backrest into a horizontal position on the rear seat cushion.

The Sportbrake comes as standard with slim, streamlined, roof rails, so if you need additional luggage space you can fit a suitable roofbox and carry up to 75 kg on the roof. That 75 kg includes the weight of the roofbox and its fittings. If towing is a requirement the Sportbrake can tow braked trailers/caravans of up to

1850 kg in weight or 750 kg if the trailer has no brakes. The only downside to towing is that the optional spare wheel, as fitted to the test car, is a Spacesaver which has its limitations when towing. Also the spare wheel well would not be large enough to accommodate a full size spare wheel.

The instruments and driving controls are simple and well laid out. The hooded instrument binnacle, behind the steering wheel, contains two large round analogue instruments. That on the left is the speedometer, with the tachometer on the right.

Between the two there is a digital information panel that provides a variety of information as well as the fuel level gauge. The right hand horizontal arm of the steering wheel has the selectors and switches for the cruise control, while the left hand arm has controls for audio associated equipment and applications. In the top centre of the facia, between the two air vents there is a screen for a variety of different things like audio, rear view camera, satellite navigation and other useful information. Below it on the wood veneer strip there is a row of seven selector buttons for the, locking, unlocking, hazard warning, navigation, ‘phone and menu.

Below that there is a slot for CDs, and below that two panels with buttons and selector knobs for the audio system on the left and ventilation system on the right. Below these there are two further panels for the windscreen and rear window demisters and further ventilation selectors. On the centre tunnel, ahead of the gear selector, there is a button to start or stop the engine, while behind the selector
