Audi A6 A new Audi A6 was launched at the Paris Motor Show last month. It is expected to arrive in Irish dealer showrooms in November. Prices will start from around €44,750. Irish buyers will have the choice of seven engines, five diesel and two petrol. The two most popular are expected to the 2.0 TDI 150 and the 2.0 TDI 190 Ultra. The former has exhaust emissions of 109 gm/km, while the latter emits 110 gm/km. The 4.0 TFSI petrol engine has cylinder on demand technology and emissions of 214 gm/km. Apart from the 3.0 TDI Biturbo engine, which is linked to an eight speed Triptronic transmission, all the others come with a six speed manual as standard or the seven speed S-Tronic automatic as an option. The S-Tronic costs an extra €2,300.

Buyers will have the choice of three trim and specifications; Touch, Feel and Flair. Prices start at Euro 17,795 for the Touch version fitted with the Puretec petrol engine and manual gearbox. The top of the range Flair specification with the BlueHDi 100 diesel is priced at €23,845. The Cactus encourages you to personalise your car. There are ten colour options from a vivid yellow (hello, yellow!) to pearl white. There are also five colour and trim options for the interior and if you prefer a more relaxed driving environment, especially for city/suburban driving, you should consider the ETG (Efficient Tronic Gearbox). Another very interesting feature is the large panoramic sunroof featuring a state-of-the-art coating, equivalent to category four sunglasses, to filter Ultra Violet light and reflect heat. Eliminating the need for an additional sun blind, the design maintains headroom, fills the cabin with diffused light and saves weight (6 kg) compared to an equivalent car with a powered sunshade. The simplified dashboard creates more space for the front passenger and there are wide front seats that replicate the style of a sofa. On ETG (Efficient Tronic Gearbox) versions, the gear selector is replaced by the neat ‘Easy Push’ system with ‘Drive, Neutral and Reverse’ push button control, which makes room for a bench style front seat layout.

arlier this year when I tested the 308 hatchback, I was tremendously impressed with the car. That model was powered by the 1.6 e-HDi diesel engine and was equipped to the top level Allure specification. Now having tested the 308 SW version, it is definitely my first choice. It has all the refined qualities of the hatchback plus a much larger luggage space, making it perfect for families with young children. Although it was equipped to the medium range Active specification, it still provided comfort, refinement and outstanding driving pleasure. The SW was fitted with the smaller, three cylinder 1.2 THP petrol engine, yet it still provided an outstanding performance. Fitted with this engine it was recently selected as the Tow Car of the Year in a UK publication. The big question now for potential 308 SW buyers is; Petrol or Diesel ? The choice is not an easy one to make. In the SW, this small 1199 cc, three cylinder, turbocharged petrol engine delivers a top speed of 204 kph (126 mph) with 0100 kph acceleration in just 12.1 seconds. Its exhaust emissions are 109 gm/km, so it slips into Irish road tax band A3, with a current annual charge of 190 euro. Its downside is that it cannot quite match the fuel consumption of the 1.6 diesel. By EU testing standards the 1.2 THP in the SW gives 47 mpg (5.9 lt/100 km) on the Urban cycle, 70 mpg (4.0 lt/100 km) on the Extra urban cycle and 60 mpg (4.7 lt/100 km) on the Combined cycle. Considering the performance offered that is excellent for an engine of its size, in a spacious comfortable family car like the 308 SW. The 1.6 e-HDi diesel in the 308 hatchback, had a top speed of 178 kph (110 mph), with 0-100 kph in 11.9 seconds. Its exhaust emissions were 98 gm/km, putting it in Irish road tax band A2 with a current annual charge of â&#x201A;Ź180. Thus far the differences are so small as to be relatively unimportant. However the fuel consumption is rather more significant, with the

308 hatchback diesel delivering 64 mpg (4.4 lt/100 km on the Urban cycle, 80 mpg (3.5 lt/100 km on the Extra urban cycle and 74 mpg (3.8 lt/100 km) on the Combined cycle. As petrol is currently around 10 cents/litre more expensive than diesel, over the course of a year your running costs could be significantly lower with the diesel, depending on your annual mileage. The choice, however, is up to you. In my opinion both are very good engines. While passenger space and accommodation are identical in both body styles,

where the SW does score is in its luggage capacity. When all seats are in use it offers 0.660 cubic metres of space compared to 0.470 cubic metres in the hatchback. When only two seats are needed the SW expands to 1.660 cubic metres compared to 1.309 cubic metres for the hatchback. While the hatchback’s figures are very good for a car of its size, the SW is superb in this regard. When it comes to towing the diesel powered hatchback can manage braked trailers/caravans of up to 1400 kg, while the petrol powered SW is limited to 1200 kg. This is not surprising as the diesel engine has a torque output of 270 Nm compared to 230 Nm for the 1.2 THP petrol engine. If you have a towing requirement you can go for a diesel version of the SW, so you will get all that extra luggage space and the higher towing capacity. While I have no complaints against the little 1.2 THP petrol engine, my own personal choice would be the SW fitted with the 1.6 e-HDi diesel engine. Both engines come with a six speed manual gearbox, although quite naturally the overall ratios will differ, due to the torque characteristics of the engines and both have automatic Stop/Start as standard. Just as a matter of interest the 308 SW used in the test drive, to find the Tow Car of the Year, was fitted with the 1.2 THP petrol engine. Like its hatchback sister, the 308 SW has

an ideal instrument and control layout. It takes a little while to get used to the small diameter steering wheel, but it is a great help in providing a clear view of the instrument panel. The Allure specification has an electric handbrake, which is small and easy to use. The Active specification on the SW test car has a manual handbrake, which sits in the central tunnel, very close to the front passenger seat, which can make it difficult to reach in chilly weather if the front seat passenger is wearing a large warm coat. The instrument binnacle itself is easy to see, above the small diameter steering wheel and directly ahead of the driver. On the left it has a fuel level gauge and the speedometer, while on the right there is a matching tachometer and the engine temperature gauge. Between them there is a digital information panel, which shows a variety of different information, including a reasonably large figure for your actual

speed. From a driving point of view it is absolutely perfect. I must admit I thoroughly enjoyed my time with the 308 SW. Its ride and roadholding are excellent. It is superbly comfortable, with both front seats adjusting for reach, height, backrest angle and lumbar support. The two outer rear seats have ISOfix fittings for child safety seats. The gearchange is smooth and positive. The steering is geared to give three turns from lock to lock. The electro-hydraulic, servo assisted, brakes have anti-lock, electronic brakeforce distribution plus an electronic stability programme and hill holder assist. The small capacity petrol engine is turbocharged and has variable valve timing. Running on an 11: 1 compression ratio it has a specific power output of 80.066 kW/lt and a specific torque output of 191.826 Nm/lt, which is impressive for a three cylinder petrol engine. I would have absolutely no hesitation in recommending the Peugeot 308 SW to any family with young children, but would leave the potential buyers to select the engine of their choice, be it petrol or diesel, depending on their requirements and personal preferences.

By KEVIN FENIX, www.twincam.ie In 2014 buyers will have the choice of two popular diesel engines. the 1.6 litre engine has an output of 85 kW while the 2.0 litre unit delivers 110 kW. This latter engine also comes with the option of the Powershift automatic transmission. Early in 2015 two petrol engines will be added to the range. These are the outstanding 1.0 litre EcoBoost and a new 1.5 litre EcoBoost which produces 118 kW. Sometime in 2015 there will also be a four door saloon model with Hybrid power. This uses a 2.0 litre petrol engine and an electric traction motor. It has a lithium-ion battery pack with an output of 1.4 kWh. Its exhaust emissions are expected to be around 99 gm/km. There is also a whole range of electronic equipment to prevent or minimise collision damage. These include, Pedestrian Detection, Active City Stop, PreCollision Assist, Adaptive LED headlamps and Inflatable Rear Seatbelts.

Ford Mondeo An all new Ford Mondeo is due to arrive in Irish dealer showrooms during November of this year. Initially it will be available in five door hatchback and estate body styles. Buyers will have the choice of two trim and equipment levels; Zetec and Titanium, with prices starting at €28,995. Standard equipment on the Zetec models includes, 16” alloy wheels, front fog lamps, quickclear windscreen, day time running lights, trip computer, MyKey, SYNC, cruise control, leather steering wheel and gear lever, electric front and rear windows, plus Auto Start Stop. Titanium models have 17” alloy wheels, chrome door line, automatic lights and wipers, electrically adjustable and folding exterior rear view mirrors, front and rear parking sensors, Lane Keeping Aid, Traffic Sign Recognition, SYNC Generation 2, 8” touchscreen, sport seats and auto dimming interior rear view mirror.

The diesel range starts with the four cylinder C220 BlueTEC giving a power output of 125 kW and 400 Nm. It has exhaust emissions of 122 gm/km, so at pre-budget rates its road tax burden would be 270 euro per year. The second diesel is a 3.5 litre V6 BlueTEC unit delivering 190 kW and 620 Nm. No exhaust emissions figures are quoted for this version. The petrol range starts with a 3.5 litre V6 biturbo unit producing 245 kW and 480 Nm. The second petrol engine is the CLS 500 delivering 300 kW and 600 Nm. In addition to these models there are also two AMG versions for those interested in a very fast and sporty performance.

Ferrari F60 America To celebrate its sixty years on the North American market, Ferrari has built 10 limited edition models for sale in North America. The car was launched at a special celebration in the Beverley Hills City Hall on Saturday 11th October. All ten models have already found buyers. Power is provided by the Ferrari V12 engine which provides a 0-100 kph acceleration time of 3.1 seconds. The fabric roof can be operated at speeds of up to 120 kph (74 mph). Interestingly, while the driver’s side of the car is upholstered in a bright red upholstery, the passenger side is trimmed in black. This apparently is inspired by Ferrari competition cars of the past. The two seats have a stylised United States flag motive in the centre of each seat backrest. The exterior colour scheme adopts the North American Team racing livery.

Mercedes CLS New coupe and shooting brake Two new versions of the Mercedes-Benz CLS have now arrived in Ireland. The original CLS was introduced in 2004 and pioneered the concept of a four door, four seater coupe. It had stylish good looks and a sporting performance to match, so was well received by affluent motoring enthusiasts. Accompanying the new CLS coupe is a CLS Shooting Brake or Tourer/estate car in ordinary language. Prices start at €62,505 for the Coupe and €65,000 for the Shooting Brake. Buyers now have the choice of two petrol and two diesel engines.
