The world’s first speeding ticket was issued in 1902. How fast was the offending motorist travelling? A scandalous 45mph.
The average car contains over 30,000 unique parts. It’s a miracle they don’t break down more often. The largest speeding fine ever produced was €1,000,000. This was levelled at a man in Sweden, who was clocked doing 180mph. In Sweden, speeding fines are proportionate to the amount someone earns.
A modern Formula 1 car can drive upside down in a tunnel at 120mph. F1 cars produce around 3.5G while cornering, meaning they’ve enough aerodynamic downforce to drive upside down in a tunnel. 60 million cars are produced every year. That’s 165,000 a day, 6,875 an hour and 115 a minute! 1 billion cars are currently in use around the world. Compared to the world’s population, that’s around one car for every seven people on Earth! It would take less than a month to get to the moon by car. That’s right — drive straight up at an average of 60mph, and you could get to the moon in under a month!
The first ever car accident occurred in 1891 involving a gasoline-powered auto, in Ohio City, Ohio. Engineer James Lambert was driving one of his inventions, an early gasolinepowered buggy, when he ran into a little trouble. The buggy, also carrying passenger James Swoveland, hit a tree root sticking out of the ground. Lambert lost control and the vehicle swerved and crashed into a hitching post. Both men suffered minor injuries. This prompted the introduction of better safety equipment for drivers. The world record for removing and replacing a car engine is 42 seconds set by mechanics working on a Ford Escort on 21 November, 1985.
The odds of dying in a car accident are around 1 in 5,000. Compare that to the odds of dying in a plane crash (1 in 11 million), and driving sounds pretty dangerous! 75% of all cars produced by Rolls Royce are still on the road. It seems Rolls Royce owners really love their cars.
The man who invented cruise control was blind. His name was Ralph Teetor, and he was inspired to invent cruise control by his lawyer, who was apparently a very poor driver. The highest total mileage clocked by a single car is 2,850,000 million miles. That’s equivalent to driving around the Earth 100 times.
The Hennessey Venom GT is the world’s fastest production car. Its top speed is 270.49mph, making it faster than the Bugatti Veyron by around 0.8 of a second.

aking a number of simple precautions can ensure safety on Irish roads during winter. Don’t get caught out if severe weather hits, make the necessary checks on your vehicle now. There are a number of simple precautions the RSA advises for driving over the winter months: 1. Check your tyres...they are your only contact with the road. Tyres should be at least the minimum legal thread depth of 1.6mm but need to be changed before they get this worn. Tyres need to be to the correct tyre pressure to give the motorist the best chance in extreme conditions. 2. Use your lights. As we come into the winter months, motorists are advised to use dipped head lights during the day so you are easily seen. Headlights and taillights should be in working order. 3. Understand your brakes. Check your car manual and find out if your vehicle has safety assist technology such as Electronic Stability Control (ESC) or Anti-Lock Braking
System (ABS). Learn how these technologies can assist your driving in harsh weather conditions. 4. Safe Distance. It takes longer to stop a car during the winter weather so slow down and allow extra distance between you and the car in front. 5. Make sure you can see clearly. All too often motorists do not de-fog or de-ice windows and mirrors which can compromise visibility. This winter ensure windows and mirrors are clear, and carry a de-icer and screen scraper. Do not use boiling water as this can crack the windscreen. 6. Beware of “Black Ice”. Black Ice is one of winter’s biggest hazards as it is difficult to see. Watch out for sheltered/shaded areas on

roads, under trees and near high walls. Be prepared. During these winter months it is advised that motorists carry a number of essentials in the boot of their car. How to BUY a CAR to match YOUR NEEDS
The most expensive journey you’ll ever make is the one out of the showroom
W
hen it comes to buying a car, it's easy to be wowed by images in the Sunday supplements and ideas of what's cool from too many hours watching Top Gear. But a car is a big investment and you need to work out what YOUR NEEDS ARE? What do you actually use your car for? There's no point becoming wedded to the idea that you need huge space in the back because on a single occasion three years ago you would have found it useful when bringing a flat-pack wardrobe from IKEA. You'll pay through the nose for it. Maybe what you really need is a car to do the school run and haul the groceries once a week with only very occasional longer trips. For others there's a lot of motorway driving, or moving lots of equipment, or transporting half a dozen people at a time. If you are on a budget - and let's face it, that's most of us - there's no point spending thousands of pounds on features you don't really need. Especially interior space. A family of four may require an urban runabout and school-run taxi. So what they want is four seats, economy and maybe above average safety. It's true
that a large 4x4 will smooth out the ride over those cursed sleeping policemen between home and school, but is it worth paying thousands and thousands of euros extra for that and seven seats? Equally, if you travel thousands of miles up and down the country, it's worth looking for something that provides the levels of comfort you need and a diesel engine's economy is likely to far outweigh the extra initial purchase cost. Having established the sort of space and features you need, you then need to decide whether you want to buy new or used. If you buy a new car, of course you can choose exactly what you want in terms of model, colour and trim. You'll know the car hasn't been thrashed by a previous owner; it will be in pristine condition and will come with a manufacturer's guarantee of three years or more. But it comes at a price. The most expensive journey you'll ever make is the one out of the showroom. In a few short moments you've lopped four figures off the value of the car when you come to resell. It is true that you're more likely, though, to find special offers on a new car and
some large discounts if you're prepared to do your homework, shop around and be a little bit flexible. Depreciation is at its greatest in the first year of a car's life. So you may want to think about using your budget to look at a second-hand car that's a year or 18 months old instead. You'll still get the balance of the manufacturer's warranty and could even get a bigger or better equipped model within your original budget. Beyond that, if the warranty is an important issue to your peace of mind, it's worth looking at the many used car warranty schemes that exist. You are most likely to have your own ideas about what constitutes style and reliability when it comes to buying a car. In truth, just about any model of car available today is built to a standard of reliability that would have seemed incredible 20 years ago. Old jokes about poorly made brands just aren't valid any more. Some people, of course, want to pay for prestige, which is fair enough. In fact, the extra investment in a particular sporting or upmarket brand isn't likely to turn into a loss, as the selling price, a few years down the line, is likely to continue to reflect the
notional value of the badge. At the other end of the scale, some people want something old and basic from the local used car trader or from the newspaper classified ads. Whichever end of the scale you're on, you need to factor running costs into your budget. There's no point using every last penny to get the car of your dreams only to discover that the insurance and running costs are astronomical. So when you have your eye on a car you like, check what the insurance will be, remember the road tax, see how many miles it will do to the gallon and have a rough idea of what regular servicing will cost. Motoring organisation the AA publishes lists of average running costs on its website (www.theaa.ie) which include all the elements involved. Ultimately you must have a mental wish-list for your new car and work out which features are absolutely essential and those on which you will compromise. Then see how far your budget will stretch. There are lots of cars from lots of sources to choose from, so it's then just a matter of getting out there and finding what you want at the price you can afford.
