s we reach the beginning of a new school year, I think we can look back proudly at the achievements of the last twelve months. Foremost among these has to be the installation of interactive projectors, laptops and wireless internet in all of the classrooms. This is sure to greatly enhance the learning environment within the school for the benefit of all of our students and teachers. Our sports facilities have also been greatly enhanced with the gym and fitness centre getting great use as well as the indoor football and basketball. I would like to make special mention of our former 6th year students who are reading their first year book as past pupils of St. Brendan’s College. At this stage, these students will have already received their Leaving Certificate results and I hope they have all done very well and are now looking forward to the next phase in their lives whether it is starting the third level course of their choice, starting out in work, taking up an apprenticeship or taking time out to travel. Whatever path they take, I wish them on behalf of the whole school community here at St. Brendan’s College, the very best of luck and success now and in the future. To our present pupils, I wish them all a very successful year and hope that 2011/2012 brings them success both in their studies and in all their other pursuits. I would like to congratulate all of the students who represented St. Brendan’s during the 2010/2011 school year. It is a great honour to represent your school and I believe that all of these students have done so admirably, giving their best at all times. Thanks also to the many members of staff who gave up their own time to train and look after these activities. Special congratulations to: The under 19 Gaelic football team – South Leinster Champions 2011 The senior Rugby team who reached the semi-finals of the Development Cup The under 15 Soccer team – runners-up in the Wicklow/Wexford Cup Sean Tobin, 3rd year – All Ireland Schools’ Indoor Archery Champion 2011 Hugh Douglas, 5th year, who represented Ireland at under 18 level in soccer Dylan Hayes, 3rd year, who represented Ireland at under 15 level in soccer Josh O’Rourke, 5th year, who represented Ireland at under 18 level in rugby. All of these students have brought great honour on themselves and the school through their commitment and hard work. Hopefully, by the time you read this, we will have added to our sports facilities with the construction of the new changing rooms with shower and toilet facilities. I hope also that the Learning Support Centre will be nearing completion and that those of our students with special educational needs will benefit greatly from this facility. Regarding the new school building, we continue to edge closer to the finishing line with the news that full planning permission has been granted by DLRCC. Our architects are now in the process of preparing the tender documents. We will keep parents fully informed of news as we get it. I would like to thank the parents who work so hard on the Parents Association for all the help they have provided at school functions and other events. It is much appreciated. I would also like to pay tribute to our administrative and ancillary staff – Nieves, Joy, Muriel, Bridie and Roy – for all their work behind the scenes making sure that the school can function properly. In conclusion, may I especially welcome our new first year students and wish them an enjoyable and rewarding time in St. Brendan’s College. I invite them to join with the existing students and the entire school community as we journey through the next academic year, guided at all times by the principles of our founder, Edmund Rice. would like to thank all the staff, students and parents who have all contributed to another successful year in Saint Brendan’s. The most significant event this year on the staff was the retirement of Mr. Kieran Ahern after a long and rewarding career at Woodbrook. I would like to wish him a happy, healthy and fruitful retirement. I know his chat in the staffroom has been missed by all. I would like to thank Mr. Kevin Mulligan for his two years he spent with us and the time he gave to coaching the senior gaelic football team who were the only team to bring home silverware this year. Welcome back to Ms. O’Brien and Ms. O’Gorman who both returned from maternity leave and thanks to their replacements, Mr. Ryan, Ms. Clarke and Mr. Kelly. Also welcome back to Mr. McDonald after his career break. I would like to welcome Ms. Angela Dwane and thank her for organising the TY play. I won’t list out all the teachers who give of their time so generously but without their dedication to these extracurricular activities the school would be a far less vibrant place. Well done and thanks to all as I know the boys and their parents really appreciate your efforts. It only remains for me to wish the class of 2011 the very best for the future and hopefully they have achieved the necessary grades to aid their future career path. Do keep in touch lads and let us know how you are doing!!! PAUL MURPHY DEPUTY PRINCIPAL

Stop Cyber Bullying

This year’s front cover is the winning poster in the Senior category of the Cyber Bullying poster competition. It was designed by Shaun Doyle (5th year). The back cover is the winning design in the Junior category, by Eoin Somers (2nd year). Cyber Bullying is bullying through the internet, or mobile phone, often through social networking sites used by young people. The competition was held, in conjunction with a talk in the school, to increase awareness of all aspects of cyber bullying including how to identify it and how to prevent it.

Thank you to everyone who contributed to the Yearbook, through articles, photos and so on. A particular ‘thank you’ to Eoin Tuohy and Hugh McDonnell who helped, at the drop of a hat, despite studying very hard for the Leaving Certificate - thank you lads!! MARYLINE DUFFIN 4

he Senior Basketball team enjoyed a great season this year. The team went through the League campaign unbeaten with an 0-7 winning streak. The team was led by Arnouldas Alchimodas and managed some close margin wins, with the game against St. Aidan’s in Tallaght, being the most memorable. The team progressed to the Dublin region semi-finals against Lucan Community College in Oblate Hall, Inchicore. The game was excellent with a constant to and fro for the lead throughout the game. We eventually lost 74-68 but recognised that we had built on previous years and were now developing into a very good basketball playing school. The Junior Basketball team did not play competively this year but still played a number of friendly games with the game against Salesian College, Celbridge being the stand-out game in an unbeaten campaign. SENIOR SQUAD: Arnouldas Alchimodas, Gytis Preistavicus, Levin Heimann, Paul Dagbay, Francis Aristosa, Lucas Nowicki, Arthuras Karoublas and Darragh Smith. JUNIOR SQUAD: Lukas Zilinskas, Blajeiz Kosnick, Rob McDonald, Vaughn Bongala, Sean Batutay, Alex Flynn, Ceejay Alvarico and Guiseppe Sinagoga. Mr. Fitzpatrick would like to thank all players for the hard work and enthusiasm which all members of each squad displayed this season. Long may our development continue!!! 36

r Blacks under 15’s soccer team reached the Wicklow/Wexford final in May. The campaign started with a 4-all draw away to Killian Community School, where Ross Griffin scored 3 of his 8 goals for Saint Brendan’s College in this match. Our next game saw us win 4-3 against Dublin Oak despite being down by one man in the first 5 minutes. The next match was an exciting 5-4 win for us against Saint David’s in Greystones. We won the semi-final against Gorey on penalties. Unfortunately due to injuries we lost the final against De La Salle, despite a good performance and an excellent goal from Luke McGrath. 2011

he 2010-2011 school year was a highly successful one for the footballers of St. Brendan’s. In what was an auspicious start to the footballing year and an indication of the level of performance to come, St. Brendan’s defeated local rivals Presentation College, Bray, in a thrilling opening round to the Wicklow A Championship. This was the first win in many years against our neighbours and the omens were looking good. It was to be another 5 months however before the next round was played. This was due to a tremendous run in the South Leinster Championship that St. Brendan’s initiated with a comprehensive win over a battling Baltinglass in the first round. The team was really beginning to take shape with an extremely dependable spine of young men manning the central positions: Shane Farrell was incredible all year; his Premier-League standard saves kept Brendan’s in the competition on numerous occasions. Eoin Tuohy was forever an inspirational presence at full-back and 38

whether it was last-ditch diving blocks or warrior-like surges out of defence, he was continuously lifting those around him. Gavin Burke, at centre back, was a rock upon which many an opposition attack perished and his setting up of play was integral to the success enjoyed this year. Niall Meldon cut a captain’s figure at centre-field and his fielding and ability to kick off either foot was unrivalled throughout the campaign. Dean O’Neill assumed the playmaker’s role at centre-forward and his giveand-go routine, followed by him arching the ball over the bar after receiving the return pass, left many a defender scratching his head. Up front, the dynamic duo of Simon Grant and Sean Plunkett dovetailed to great effect with Simon using his strength to win mountains of possession before Sean would apply the coup-de-grace by arrowing the ball over the bar in his own swaggering, effortless style. Next up was a much vaunted Avondale side and after a game that could have gone either way, the greater resolve of the Brendan’s boys saw them over the line.

A semi-final tie against Ferrybank CC loomed and after much delay due to the Winter freeze, St. Brendan’s were very much down to business in disposing of the opposition comfortably. And so to the big day with Brendan’s vying with Bunclody VEC for the right to be declared South Leinster champions. Buoyed by a contingent of very vocal supporters, the Brendan’s lads didn’t disappoint. Augmenting the aforementioned players, Cian Byrne and Nathan Cardin were tenacious and tigerish in the corner back positions. Chris Byrne was a bundle of energy working up and down the wing. David Sullivan was similarly driven throughout the year and once more in the final, where his ball-carrying and fooballing brain were vital to the cause. Martin Sustavicius was the perfect foil to Meldon at midfield, expertly linking defence and attack. Fergus O’Brien also proved himself a useful addition to the team at this point in the year, his power bringing vital strength to the middle third. Darragh O’Donnell’s speed and ball-carrying tormented opposition defences throughout the

S P O R T S

campaign and Cian McGoldrick worked tirelessly and got some vital goals, without which Brendan’s would never have reached this stage. Rob Martinho played the roving corner forward role to perfection and his intelligent use of possession was a feature of his play. On the day, St. Brendan’s played all the best football and were deserving winners. Captain Niall Meldon had the honour of lifting the Cup. There was little time for celebration as within a fortnight we were back in action, this time in the Leinster semi-final where we faced the North Leinster champions, O’Fiadh College from Dundalk. Played on the resplendent St. Brigid’s state-of-the-art 3G pitch, St. Brendan’s unfortunately came up short on the day. In late March attention returned to more local matters and the much delayed Wicklow “A” quarter-final. The opponents were Wicklow De La Salle. Shorn of a couple of our regulars, St. Brendan’s battled valiantly against the odds but were narrowly defeated. And so the year was ended. Other players who contributed heavily to the success of the year were Conor McMahon, David Byrne, Owen Brett, Chris Carroll, Josh O’Rourke, Barry Kinsella, Cillian O’Carroll, Rob Murray and Michael McHugh. Thanks to all the players who togged out and hopefully the majority of the players will continue to play the sport long after they’ve left the school. The players deserved their success for their skill and determination and no doubt a first South Leinster Championship in many years was a fine way to crown the sporting calendar.

BY PAUL McGRATH started kickboxing when I was four and I knew it was going to be a life changing experience. For the past four years I have been representing Ireland in countries such as Portugal, Italy and Croatia. This year I went to Portugal with my dad and I reached the semi-finals. Unfortunately I broke my thumb halfway through the first round and the match was stopped. However I was very happy with my winnings: a world bronze medal. I am now back in training to go to Los Angeles next year. I am currently training four nights a week which is seven hours altogether. Sometimes I help out with the younger classes to show them the basics. I am training in a small club owned by Grand Master Massan Ghorbari. Travelling to compete can be very expensive so I have been sponsored by a local restaurant for the last four years. So far I have won 16 All-Ireland titles, four of which I won in the last year and 2nd and 3rd European and World medals. I was told when I trained for the first time that dedication and hard work pays off and for me it has.

INDOOR SCHOOLS’ COMPETITION Congratulations to the school archery team who performed particularly well at the recent Indoor Schools’ Archery competition. Sean Tobin won the “B” grade with a personal best score of 505/600 while Jonathan Doyle was best in the “C” grade with a score of 380/600. Sean Butler came second in the “C” grade with a score of 302/600 and Daniel Pluck progressed to the “D” grade. Well done also to the team mentor, Alan Hill, who is deputising for Bernie Barry who is recovering from illness. We wish Bernie a speedy and full recovery.

ALL-IRELAND SCHOOLS CHAMPIONSHIPS Congratulations to Sean Tobin, 3rd Year who has become National Indoor (Boy’s) Archery Champion for 2011 with a score of 523 points. Sean shoots for the St. Brendan’s Archery Club and this is a huge achievement for him. Ryan Smith was second in the Beginners section with a score of 392 points. Ryan also won the Junior Hotshot award.

RUGBY

Senior Development Cup

t was a busy year in the Schools’ rugby calendar. The school was defeated in the second round of the Senior Development Cup by a strong Gorey Community School who went on to contest the Development Cup Final loosing 7-3. In the Senior Development Shield Competition St Brendan’s opened with a convincing 23-12 win over Convey College. Josh O’Rourke, Luke Sheridan and Cody Newell were best of the St Brendan’s team with strong performances also from Shane Farrell, David Sullivan, Fergal Browne and Junior Madide. The second round gave St Brendan’s a home draw again and they were vastly superior to St Aidan’s Brookdale eventually running out 40-0 winners. Rhys Gorman, Gavan Burke, Nathan Johnston, and Daniel Michael were particularly dominant. This put St Brendan’s in a first rugby quarter-final at senior level in over fifteen years. As numbers in training were improving and the return of Kevin Kinsella to training there was a good deal of optimism amongst the players

I

heading into the quarter-final. This time Hartstown Community School provided the opposition but a strong St Brendan’s pack allied to good handling from the backs saw St Brendan’s ease to a 15-0 half-time lead. As the lineout was functioning well, thanks in particular to good work from Ian Collins and Shane Farrell, Hartstown found it difficult to make progress and eventually St Brendan’s ran out convincing winners on a 38-0 scoreline. St Brendan’s faced Wexford CBS in Wexford in the semi-final. This was a hard-fought game with both sides taking serious hits. In the first half St Brendan’s had the advantage of a strong wind but failed to take advantage of this despite going close on a number of occasions. Injuries in the game to key players like Rhys Gorman and Nathan Johnston had a telling effect and St Brendan’s saw their Shield run come to a disappointing end. However hopes are high for 2012 as the majority of this squad are underage for next years competition. We’d like to wish our 6th Years who played on this years team – Gytis Presigalavacius, Arnoldos Archimovas, Junior Madide, Kevin Kinsella and Sean Kennedy the best of luck and also congratulations to Josh and Luke for playing with the Irish Under-18s.

Josh O’Rourke

This year I had the honour to be chosen to represent the Ireland Under 18’s rugby team. We played three matches, of which we won two and drew one. The first match was against Germany in Berlin. We beat them 54-0 as they are only a developing rugby country, but it was great to get my first taste of international rugby. The next match was against England at home in Ashbourne. In the first half we were totally in control of the game but the English fought back in the second half to draw with us 23-23. After the match we were presented with our first international caps. The final match was against France in Quimper. A large crowd of 4,000 spectators welcomed us onto the pitch which was exciting, as many of us had never played in front of a crowd that big before. We won the match 29-14 which was a first for an Irish Youths U-18’s side away in France and ended the season unbeaten. 2011

e went to Paris for four days and three nights where we stayed in a hotel in Stade de France Chaville, near Versailles, a nice town only a short drive from Paris city centre. We left on Monday 2nd May from the school at 3.20am! On the first day we had a guided bus tour of Paris and on Tuesday we went to Versailles to see the castle. In the afternoon we visited the Stade de France, which included a Our bus driver tour of the dressing rooms. ‘Norman’! On Tuesday night we took a boat ride along the river Seine. On Wednesday morning we went to Montmartre to see the Sacre-Coeur and admire the beautiful view of Paris.

In the afternoon we went to the very top of the Eiffel Tower, this was followed by a visit to the Louvre where we saw the Mona Lisa. That night we went to a bowling alley to play bowling and pool. Thursday was the final day of our trip. We spent the whole day in Eurodisney where we went on Space Mountain, and some went on it as many times as ten times!! We also went on rides such as Pirates of the Caribbean and Indiana Jones. We then left for our flight home. Overall the trip was enjoyed by everyone. We also a good laugh with our bus driver, we nicknamed him ‘Norman’ - Shane misses him very much… 2011

Conor McCrossan did my work experience in Aviva as an actuary. Aviva was amazing. The people were all very nice to me and the inside was so modern and up-to-date with all the gadgets. I liked the way Aviva employed people not just from Ireland. Aviva is a multicultural company, there were Spanish, English, French, Italian and Portuguese employees. When I entered the building, security gave me an ID card and this allowed me in and out of Aviva without any hassle. My ID card contained my name and my host name: Alan Bergan. The lift took me to floor five. I introduced myself to Alan, he seemed nice. Alan gave me a lot of work. I was required to input rates on the computer. It was very tiring but rewarding in the end. Floor five was the re-insurance department. In the second week I went up to floor six - the investment department. I preferred this department because it was quieter and smaller. I was given the task of setting out, on the calendar, the meetings for each day. I flew through the job. Overall I enjoyed the work experience in Aviva, and I would advise any students to go to Aviva on work experience.

Brandon Downey or my work experience I had chosen two work placements: Everest Cycles and Shoreline Leisure in Bray. In my week in Everest Cycles I had real fun as I was working with all types of bicycles from mountain bikes down to Box’s. In my time there I had been shown how to do a full service of a bike as well as how to assemble a bike from right out of the box. I would recommend this placement if you have a spark for bikes. In my second week in Shoreline Leisure I found out what was the requirements to become a fitness trainer and a physiotherapist. Most days I started work as early as 6.30am. While I was working in the Leisure Centre I took part in different fitness classes: Spinning, Body Core, and Circuits. From my observation of the classes with determination anybody can get fit. I would recommend this placement for people with an ambition to be fit.

The “Build a Bank” project is run in conjunction with AIB and involves a group of students setting up a “mini-bank” in the school. Students can then open accounts, lodge and withdraw money through their account in the school. The bank operates at break time on two days a week and is monitored by staff from the AIB in Bray. The objective of the project is to encourage students to open bank accounts and to help them understand how banks and bank accounts operate.

HERITAGE TRIPS Below are some of the Heritage Trips the Transition Year students participated in throughout the school year. Shankill Woods This trip was at the request of the class who were shocked to learn in their Environmental Studies class that there is a possibility that all of the woodland in public ownership may be sold. This would include the 3 lovely woods, Rathmichael, Ballycorus and Barnaslingan, that the class walked through on their hike from the Scalp to Shankill before Christmas. Natural History Museum At the trip to the Dead Zoo (Natural History Museum) all the group were stunned by the polar bear, shot dead in the Canadian Arctic in 1851 by a native of Dundalk! The Great Sugarloaf We were blessed with a glorious day for our climb of the Great Sugarloaf. The climb was tackled by the longest route from Kilmac. Everyone made it to the top is a super time of just under 3 hours showing the value of all the earlier walks. Even the final scramble posed no problems! Glasnevin Cemetery The poor weather tested the stamina of our TY lads for the tour of Glasnevin Cemetery. But they were so enthralled that their guide extended the tour by almost a full hour despite the rain. Their guide was full of praise for the enthusiasm and attentiveness of the group. Howth Cliff Walk The photo shows the group at the start of the long cliff walk around Howth head. The happy smiling faces were much less so 3 hours later after circling the cliffs of Howth and then crossing the high hills of the peninsula to return to Howth village. Some of the boys were even unable to partake of any refreshments, such was their exhaustion! Dun Laoghaire Pier Treasure Hunt The Dun Laoghaire pier treasure hunt ended in a welter of excitement, drama and controversy. The afternoon was fiercely competitive but the finish was even more so. Team Reds came back to have their answers checked in an unbelievable time of 37 minutes. Their answers were excellent with

only one incorrect answer. Other teams returned in fast times with the same scores. However soon controversy raged. Several teams lodged formal objections to Team Subway who, it was alleged, had told several other teams that the number on the Crimean War cannon was 80! Team FDL, Team Excelsior and Team Gringos2007 also made this allegation. A torrent of claim and counter-claim was washing over the pier! Tempers were frayed! However peace was restored when, with the wisdom of Solomon, the senior judge, Mr Murphy, adjudged that while Team Subway were disqualified for providing incorrect answers to other teams, all other teams were also eliminated from the contest for the offence of seeking outside assistance. However such was the keeness of the completion that Mr Murphy decided that the entire group should spend the prize fund on warming hot chocolates in Dun Laoghaire! Croke Park The long trip to Croke Park was exhausting! The walk from O'Connell Street, climbing all those steps and finally a long session with the interactive games! The hurling speed game was won with a top speed of 128kpm. The boys were hardly able to make their way home. Shankill Beach After an exhausting morning at a Céilí in the school we opted for a local trip to the beaches in Shankill and Killiney to see the aftermath of the last Ice Age. The photo shows our budding geologists standing beside the debris of the Great Irish Sea Glacier that covered the area and gave the smooth shapes to Killiney Hill, Bray Head and Carrickgollagan (the harder quartz of the Sugarloaf was more resistant!). In fact it can be said that the group are standing under 2000 meters of solid ice! (even if the ice melted 16000 years ago!). We even collected some of the famous Ailsa Craig granite pebbles; carried to Shankill from Scotland by the same ice! A lot of debris from Scotland has found landfall in Shankill! Young Scientist Exhibition A visit to the Young Scientist Exhibition is

always on for the first Friday back to school after Christmas. While the lads marvelled at the exhibits, the crowds this year were bigger than ever (we say this every year!) and this made any group photos impossible especially with the crowds (of mostly female) new friends gathered around our group! Dublin Mountain Way The last outing before Christmas was a 3-hour hike on the new Dublin Mountains Way from the Scalp to Shankill village. Through old and new woodland, over the bald height of Carrickgollagan (with a diversion to the old lead mines chimney, see the photo!) and down to Shankill on the beautiful new path in Rathmichael Wood; it was a grand afternoon; despite the biting wind and the fearful views off to the higher and snowcovered Wicklow hills. Collin's Barracks The class had another trip to the Museum at Collins Barracks in November to have a look at another of the exhibitions. The group's second visit of the year proved a slight disappointment when the questions in the museum's worksheet that we were using as a treasure hunt proved a little too challenging! Bray Head The group had a very enjoyable walk or run to the top of Bray Head. It was a first ascent for some of the class, even for some residents of Bray! Kilmainham Gaol On this trip the class were shocked to learn of the conditions that prisoners were kept in down through the years and were moved by their guide's account of the executions of the leaders of the 1916 Rising. Trinity College Dublin The science treasure hunt in Trinity was a great success and great fun, won by Team FDL (N Johnson, D Brierton and D Michael) who relied on old fashioned detective work and brain power. The strategies adopted by other teams were not as productive; one team were shocked by how little Trinity students knew about their own college and another learned an expensive lesson about the limited power and speed of Google! 2011

aint Brendan’s pupils have been sponsoring three boys, to enable them to go to school in Nepal, for the past two years. With one non-uniform day a year the St. Brendan’s boys enable three young Nepalese boys to get an education instead of working, like their fathers, as unskilled workers in the fields. The school, River Dale School, is situated in Pokhara in the foothills of the Himalayas in Nepal. The money raised by the non-uniform day is sent directly to the school to support these three pupils. I have direct contact with the principal who is trustworthy and responsible. This is an excellent way for the boys of St. Brendan’s College to participate in a charity helping young boys to get an education. Well done to all of them for supporting this cause.

By NATHAN CARDIN with extracts from Tom Tannion’s Blog on

www.havenpartnership.com hris Carroll and myself went to Haiti last April to build houses and work with the local community. We departed Ireland for Haiti on Saturday 2nd April, arriving there early on Sunday morning, after travelling for approximately 24 hours, taking in a one-hour stopover in Newfoundland, and a two-hour roadside pit stop due to a failing engine fan belt. We eventually arrived in Gonaives, in the North West of the country at 2.00am local time.

playground was making very good progress. We were enduring blisters, heat, dust and long days - but it was all worth it. By the end of the fourth full day on site all the groups had settled into a steady routine and things were coming together with increasing ease. The uncertainty of the first day had been replaced by a confidence and familiarity that had moved the various projects on at pace. On our second day, Chris and I went on a beneficiary tour to Gonaives. Here we met some of the families who would be given houses on the new site. The shanty town we visited was a heart-wrenching place to be, although even with this feeling it was amazing to see all of these people who have After a light breakfast and a short briefing from Haven staff, we hit the building site. Conditions on site were basic. We were living in tented accommodation, with limited access to electricity, sleeping on canvas camp beds and sharing with up to five other people. We were up everyday at 5am for breakfast and worked in temperatures often exceeding 40ºC. Chris and I were involved in the masonry team working on the new community centre in the mornings until half two when we joined the social team in last years camps to work with the children. We ran a summer camp which involved volunteers and the local community interacting through sport, music and arts and crafts. Haiti is not a place where it’s easy to become comfortable with the sights you see or the poverty you encounter. After two full days on site, the progress was visible, houses were being completed and painted and the Community Centre and 58

suffered tremendously still smiling, singing and dancing. This musical feeling was brought on by a volunteer named Bobby Lee who used his guitar to bring hope to these people. This was a place that would bring any man or woman to tears. Imagine a town built on a rubbish tip with very dubious water flowing through the middle of it. Imagine trudging through mud whilst lots of children walk alongside you laughing and smiling, oblivious to their surroundings. Imagine then seeing a ‘room’ no bigger than something that would hold a king size bed and two chairs. Imagine five people living, eating, sleeping, washing and existing in that room. Imagine a roof on that room that is not waterproof and walls that are not wind or rain proof. Imagine a foul smell. You are imagining the place from which our work will rescue some families. We came back in silence.

Bobby Lee whose music made the trip so much better

George Hook, TV presenter, who was there with our team in a school in Gonaives.

The prospect of a cold drink, a shower and the evening meal was a great way to unwind before the evening entertainment began. The food was of a very high quality and credit really has to go to the catering team who did such marvellous work. In the evenings there was ‘Open Mic’ nights which showcased the talent that was swirling around in our group of 370. Throughout the week, Chris and I became very attached to the group of over 100 children we were working with and it was a very hard thing to leave. We did end on a good note, a group of landscapers built an 11-a-side football pitch and we played a match against the local boys. This was an amazing experience. In all Chris and I really enjoyed the trip, it was a life-changing experience and I would recommend this kind of work to anyone. I for one will not be taking what I have for granted anymore.

GRAFFITI WORKSHOP

A Graffiti workshop was organised, in the school, by Ms McCann. It had no affiliations with the current illegal graffiti art scene! One of the aims is to encourage students to explore ideas and gain confidence by acquiring new skills, while respecting the environment. The workshop only lasted for a day but was enjoyed by all who participated.

Ms Lynn spoiled the Second years by organising a French breakfast (petit-dejeuner) where she served hot chocolate with marshmallows, croissants and baguettes with butter and jam. This is not an easy job; it requires a lot of organising and dedication!! There is no better woman than Ms Lynn for the task; she is a real ‘cordon bleu’ who has treated the staff, many times, to her scrumptious desserts. Merci Ms Lynn!! T H I R D Y E A R

MERCHANT OF VENICE

On April 5th the Honours English group from third year went to see ‘The Merchant of Venice’, which we were studying, in the Mermaid Arts Theatre in Bray. It was a modern day setting using the original, unchanged, Shakespearian text .You could describe it as ‘Shakespeare meets the modern day’. Well I think ‘Shakespeare meets the 80s’ would be more fitting! Judging by the clothing and the amount of leather jackets! You are probably thinking ‘would the old English text and modern clothing not look out of place?’ And it was, at the very beginning anyway; but after the first scene it began to work well. This was only a minor feature of the play but the main points and themes of the play were not lost. The main reason we went to see the live stage version, after having By JAMES MALONE already watched the film version, was to help us with the stagecraft question which can come up on the Junior Cert. Apart from one or two minor mistakes from the members of cast, scenery and wooden props didn’t change so the same wooden blocks and the bridge where the characters stood didn’t change. That meant the same bridge was in Venice, the Rialto, The Courthouse, Belmont and Portia’s Palace. There also was impromptu humour which arose from the Shakespearian text and comments and ‘teenage humour’ which came from members of the audience (especially during the change in scenes when the lights went out!). It was a very enjoyable experience and really helped with our study of the play. S

Sixth Year Ecology Trip On a crisp November morning our biology class, along with Ms O’Neill and Mr Scully, headed to Knocksink Wood in Enniskerry, for our mandatory ecology field trip. When we first arrived we went directly to the visitors centre where we would await our guides. We were given a clipboard and a question sheet to be filled in during the course of the trip. When our guides arrived we split into two groups. Each group then By GARY KING proceeded to walk for a short time in the woods. When we chose a spot to study the habitat we marked it off in a square with four pieces of ten metre rope. We identified any leaves and insects in the area. We also looked for any evidence of any animals. We recorded any findings and filled out our worksheet. At half twelve we finished and cleaned up the equipment and returned it to the visitor centre. Everyone enjoyed it and felt it was extremely worthwhile and a big help for their Leaving Cert ecology exam. 2011
