The Jubilee is an amazing ins tu on that is associated with se ng things to rights, making new beginnings, forgiving debts, freeing slaves and returning land that had been confiscated because of unpayable debt. From the feast of all Dominican saints on 7th November 2015 to the 21st January 2017 the Dominicans will live a jubilee marking 800 years since the Pope recognised St. Dominic and his li le group of friars and blessed their work of preaching the Word of God. A hundred years ago in 1916 their 700th anniversary was muted because of the terrible bloodbath of the First World War, as well as the revolu on here in Ireland. In 1816 too, Europe was recovering a er a series of ba les and wars, most notably the Ba le of Waterloo in 1815, and the 600th anniversary of the founda on of the Order passed quietly. So it is a long me since the Dominicans have had a chance to reflect on their nature and role in a centenary year of jubilee. It may be a coincidence that Pope Francis has declared almost the same period to be a special jubilee year of mercy. Even if it is, that coincidence is a sign of grace, for Dominicans take their role as preachers of God’s mercy very seriously. In the jubilee, the friars ask all who are associated with the Dominican Order to pray together. They ask for the charity of prayer from the people who read the St. Mar n Magazine and other publica ons, those who through the St. Mar n Apostolate, support their mission of preaching the gospel, and the lives of their communi es through their prayers and contribu ons in the churches that they serve. As with every jubilee year, it is a me of blessing and of pardon. It is also a me of joy. For from their first days 800 years ago, God has blessed them with voca ons, courage, and a sense that they are doing what he has called them to do.

Novena Prayer to ST. MARTIN DE PORRES Most humble St. Mar n whose burning charity embraces all, but especially the sick, afflicted or in need, we turn to you for help in our present difficul es and we implore you to obtain for us, from God, health of soul and body, and in par cular the favour we now ask. May we, by imita ng your charity and humility, find quiet and contentment all our days, and cheerful submission to God’s holy will in all the trials and difficul es of life. St. Mar n, pray for us that we may be worthy of the promises of Christ. Amen. O God, who exalts the humble and who made St. Mar n your confessor, to enter into the heavenly Kingdom, grant through his merits and intercession, that we may so follow the example of his humility on earth as to deserve to be exalted with him in Heaven. Through Christ Our Lord, Amen.

REFLECTION And I said to the man who stood at the gate of the year; “Give me a light that I may tread safely into the unknown.” And he replied: “Go out into the darkness and put your hand into the Hand of God. That shall be to you, be er than light and safer than a known way.” Minnie Louise Haskins

REFLECTION In God’s world, for those who are in earnest, there is no failure. No work truly done, no word earnestly spoken, no sacrifice freely made was ever made in vain. F.W. Robertson This month we are remembering those who died in 1916 believing they were sacrificing their lives to make Ireland a be er place. We pray that we will strive to live in peace with one another and find in our daily living, ways to sacrifice ourselves for others.

REFLECTION Prayer for Peace 足 Lord, make me a channel of your peace; where there is hatred may I bring love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is darkness, light; and where there is sadness, joy. O divine Master, grant that we may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be understood as to understand; to be loved as to love; for it is in giving that we receive, it is in pardoning that we are pardoned, and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. THE HOLY FAMILY OF JESUS, MARY AND JOSEPH

SAINT DOMINIC 2016 marks the 800th anniversary of the Order of Preachers, the Dominican Order, which takes its name from its father and founder St. Dominic. Those who knew Dominic and who lived and worked with him tell us it was impossible not to love him. Saints can be difficult to live with, but not Dominic who was always cheerful and easy to live with. Dante, the medieval Italian poet, describes him as ‘the boyfriend of the Chris an faith’ and as ‘a companion and messenger of Christ.’ Over and over again we hear how cheerful a companion he was – we hear of his prolonged and passionate prayer – o en all night. He fasted and disciplined himself in a way that we would not understand now but was perfectly acceptable and in tune with the mes in which he lived. He exhorted his followers to talk always to God and about God and encouraged them to study the bible the word of God. His biographers tell us that on his journeys he always carried with him St. Ma hew’s gospel and the le ers of St. Paul. Dedicated to preaching Christ and the faith he loved, he founded the Dominican Order for that purpose. Dominic’s principal work was to preach against the Albigensian heresy which was prevalent in the South of France at that me. He and his followers, were the only ones who had some success against this heresy. The voice of Dominic is s ll heard today and will con nue to be heard in the preaching of the members of his Order. Over the centuries his voice was heard in the lives of Dominican Saints like Catherine of Siena, St. Thomas Aquinas, St. Vincent Ferrer and of course in the life and words of St. Mar n de Porres as well as in the lives of a host of others who have in their different ways influenced the life and thought of the Church in the mes in which they lived. We thank God for the gi of Dominic, and ask your prayers for the members of the Order he founded, that they con nue to be faithful to their calling of praising, blessing and preaching The Word of God.

SAINT MARTIN DE PORRES Mar n was born in Lima on December 9th, 1579. His father, Don Juan de Porres was a Spanish knight; his mother was Anna Velasquez, a freed woman from Panama of African descent. His parents were not married and a er the birth of Juana, a second child, the father Don Juan, le the mother and children to fend for themselves. Despite the poverty of their home Mar n, from an early age, showed excep onal generosity especially to those poorer than himself. He was so obviously moved by their plight, that o en, when sent on messages, he would part with his mother’s money giving it to someone less fortunate than himself. When Mar n was eight, his father returned to Lima, and in a change of heart took over the care and educa on of his children. Part of Mar n’s educa on was being appren ced to a barber/surgeon. He learned quickly and became so skilful that many customers made it a point of asking to be a ended to by Mar n. At the age of fi een Mar n entered the Dominican Priory of the Holy Rosary as a ter ary helper. A er nine years his exemplary life led his superiors to order him to become a lay brother in the Dominican Order, and Mar n was clothed in the black and white habit of St. Dominic. Mar n’s life in religion was given over to the service of the religious community in which he lived. But his work was not confined to monastery and Church. His love of God and his fellow human beings brought him to seek out all those who needed his help. The picture of his life that endures most is that of someone who sought to relieve want and misery in every form among all classes and condi ons of life. The people of Lima affec onately called him ‘the father of the poor’. To the sick he was doctor, nurse, and comforter. He put his knowledge of medicine to good use and performed many extraordinary cures. People flocked to him, rich and poor alike, all hoping to be healed and renewed, from whatever form of illness they suffered. God was pleased to perform many cures and wonders through the willing and obedient hands of his servant and one cannot but be astounded by the miraculous happenings in his life. He was also renowned for his love of animals and his ability to communicate with them. Mar n died in 1639. Death however was not the end of his mission of charity but served rather to extend his aid throughout the world. Even today, over three hundred and seventy years a er his death there are reports, all over the world, of numerous favours and graces a ributed to St. Mar n’s intercession. He was canonised by Pope John 23rd on May 6th, 1962. His feast is observed on November 3rd. He is Patron of Social Jus ce and of Race Rela ons.
