How time flies!
At the time of writing, the dog days of summer are coming to an end. This naturally means that I'm picking handfuls of our tiny, tart blackberries every morning while walking the dogs. We have a bumper crop this year shared by the native bears and my dogs. More about Landmark dogs on page 48 in this Fall issue of Collection. I'm sure if you are reading this, you've probably read at least a 1,000 articles and reports on the real estate and housing markets - locally, nationally, and globally. How many more statistics can we handle? What is the market going to do? Our local MLS has done over half a billion dollars' worth of business during the first half of 2021 with Landmark having over a 10% share in the market (over 200 transactions). With our 40 brokers and offices across 3 counties, we continue as a leader and at the heart of local real estate. We are passionate about what we do, building and maintaining relationships over many years and always being a resource not only for our clients but the community. You'll always find a friendly face and voice at Landmark willing and able to offer answers and solutions to questions about our area. We are really good at what we do, and we are nice people as well. Almost everyone's favorite season in the NC mountains will be here by the time our magazine hits the stands. We have proudly produced our magazine in-house for over 15 years and I'm glad you have picked up a copy. Collection is distributed locally on the Plateau; it is provided to all our Landmark vacation renters and to visitors at our sister hotels - Park on Main in Highlands and the newly opened 248-room Equestrian Hotel in Ocala which is the pinnacle of luxury living in the heart of the World Equestrian Center. In closing, I wanted to share a few words from the official song of North Carolina written in 1831 by William Gaston. The words are as true today as they were then and that is to 'love this land we live in'. "Then let all those who love us, love the land that we live in. As happy a region as on this side of heaven, Where plenty and peace, love, and joy smile before us, Raise aloud, raise together the heart thrilling chorus. Hurrah! Hurrah! Cashiers is located on a plateau near the southern tip of the Appalachian mountains in western North Carolina. Centered around the crossroads of US highways 107 and 64, a small village comes alive with activity in the warmer months when people from all over the south – and beyond – arrive to escape the summer heat and humidity. Cashiers’ name is said to be derived from the gem mining trade that flourished here in the early 1900s. cooking with landmark Chef Ian's Pumpkin Bisque (Serves 8) •
6 cups of canned pumpkin or substitute one medium sized pumpkin, seeded, peeled, quartered, and roasted at 375°F for 45 minutes, then cool pumpkin and puree

1-1/2 cups of filtered spring water
•
2 cups of heavy cream
•
1/2 teaspoon of allspice
•
1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon
•
one pinch of nutmeg
•
1/4 cup of light brown sugar
•
3 tablespoons of white sugar
•
1 dash of salt
Combine all ingredients while whisking slowly over low to medium heat. Simmer for 15 minutes. Top with Amaretto whipped cream (see recipe) for a festive twist. Enjoy! This delectable and yet simple recipe was provided to me during a recent dining experience at the inn. Its flavors (and aromas) might lend it to be more of a fall/ winter staple. Western North Carolina has abundant wildlife (bears, deer, turkey, snakes, and more). Please do not feed the bears! Garbage disposal instructions are provided for each property. Local infrastructure is not the same here as it is in metropolitan neighborhoods. We encourage our guests to take full advantage of the mountains and get out to explore and enjoy. What should I bring? Your toothbrushes and personal care items. Landmark Vacation Rentals prides itself on its professional laundry service, which provides bed linens and bathroom towels. A starter kit is in the home when you arrive that includes coffee, dish soap, dishwasher pods, a scrubbing sponge, laundry detergent, paper towels, toilet paper, and hand soap. What is your cancellation policy? Please refer to our website for exact details - these may vary from property to property. What if I arrive late for check-in? We provide three after-hours check-in locations. You will be directed to the most convenient location for your rental property, where you will pick up your check-in packet. Your packet will include printed directions to your rental. Please follow the printed directions as GPS isn’t always reliable on the mountain. What activities are there on the plateau? There are many hiking trails for everybody - not to mention the waterfalls in the area and the unique shopping.
