What inspired you to establish Nora and Co.?

After relocating from Atlanta, Georgia in 2003, Nora’s love for Cashiers stemmed from its natural beauty. She saw an opportunity to create a space where locals and visitors alike could discover handpicked treasures that reflect the area’s charm after Nancy Pearson decided to sell the store, who became a dear friend and mentor.

Can you describe the ethos behind the products you curate for your store?

Nora believes in curating items that blend sophistication with practicality. Each product undergoes careful consideration to ensure it aligns with the boutique’s commitment to the community. She is always happy to place specialty item orders for customers at any time and will ship throughout the US states.

How do you stay abreast of emerging trends while maintaining a timeless appeal in your selections?

Nora emphasizes the importance of balancing trend awareness with a focus on enduring style. She keeps a keen eye on design publications, attends industry events, and listens closely to customer feedback to curate a collection of products that stands the test of time.

1. Can you elaborate on the significance of Mr. Pickles Dog Park to the hotel?

Mr. Pickles is the owner’s dog, and the dog park is generously made available for all guests and locals to use and allow their pets a chance to go off leash and enjoy the fresh mountain air.  It also acts as a great meeting point for dogs and their people within the community.

2. What unique qualities distinguish The Park on Main from other accommodations in Highlands?

Beyond the well appointed accommodations, TPOM boasts not only a pet friendly, but pet forward approach to hospitality.  Pet amenities come standard in the rooms and the courtyard and fenced in park are complimented by the toys and treats made readily available for both pets and their people.

3. Could you highlight some of the distinctive amenities and experiences that guests can anticipate at The Park on Main?

The love between a dog and their owner is a treasured bond. We welcome dogs here at our luxury hotel with pet-friendly amenities. Our elegant and comfortable suites have amenities for your pet such as a designer Platform Dog Bed, dog towel and doggie mat. We also offer local fresh baked goods available in the lobby and delicious hand made treats for your dog.

4. How have guests typically reacted to the adoptable dog? Are there any memorable adoption stories you could share?

Our staff as well as our guests love having a lobby dog.  Animal companions often bring us each back to the heart of hospitality, which is providing comfort and care as well as delight and surprise.

Calhoun was the first foster dog I’ve had the pleasure of working with since I took over as general manager, and he recently found his forever home with a guest in Nashville, TN.   We are sad so see him go but so happy that he found his forever home.  That is the reason we participate in this program and look forward to many future foster opportunities and forever home placements.

Easy as 1-2-3!

INSTRUCTIONS

1.Marinate the snapper in the citrus brine for 45 minutes and strain juices from the fish, reserving the juices.

2.Toss the marinated fish in the remaining ingredients and fill the bowls to serve with toasted and season fresh corn tortillas.

3.Use left over citrus brine for another batch of ceviche!

“It was LOVE at first site for this seafood and meat shop. Once they opened the counter for lunch service we were hooked even more. Native Prime is not just a seafood and meat shop where you can eat but, it is more like “going home” every time we walk in the door. The entire staff is phenomenal and the experience of having food and wine at the counter is just incredible. Scott loves to cut fish up and it is total entertainment to watch him behind the bar. We are blessed to have Native Prime close by.”

Joanne Bryson’s journey in real estate is not just a story of professional success but also one of personal passion, deeply rooted in her family history and love for the Sapphire area’s natural landscape. “I have a few family members that were brokers, might run in the blood.” Joanne smiles when asked about her journey in the industry. “My passion for real estate began when I was a young girl. Despite her early fascination with real estate, Joanne initially pursued a different path. “I pushed it down to go to college and study business with intentions of getting an MBA. But, I got married and had a family instead. Enjoyed my time as a stay-at-home mom. During these years, I owned a property management company. But being a successful mom was a priority.”

It wasn’t until 2020 that Joanne decided to pursue her real estate license, finally turning her passion into a career. “My kids are now young adults that can support themselves. I am doing exactly what I love!”

Joanne’s deep connection to the Sapphire area sets her apart from others in the market. “Being a true local to the area, I have deep knowledge that will set me apart from other brokers. I have respect for our area and love it so much.”

Regarding client relationships, Joanne emphasizes the importance of communication and understanding. “I’m good at reading body language and understanding what people are telling me. Just listening to clients is key. I’ll do everything I can to make sure I give them an excellent experience while viewing properties.”

One of Joanne’s most memorable success stories involves relocating a client from California to the Sapphire area. “They made the move here from CA based on the experience they had with me and the information I was able to relay about our area. They completely trusted me and took the chance!”

For Joanne, the key factors contributing to a successful real estate transaction are expertise and a smooth process. “EXPERTISE! That’s what I provide to my clients. A smooth transaction all the way through. I provide guidance and facts.”

Staying updated with market trends and regulation changes is crucial for Joanne. “Staying up to date. I do a lot

of learning after 5 o’clock. Educating on statistics, keeping current with the latest real estate news.”

When asked about advice for aspiring real estate professionals, Joanne stresses professionalism, sincerity, honesty, and product knowledge.

Innovation is also part of Joanne’s strategy. She leverages social media, particularly Instagram, to connect with potential clients. “I use my social media as a platform. Instagram is my favorite. I have met so many people visiting the area. They know me... I have not even met them yet, but they know me. These people reach out to me and invite me to lunch! It’s so cool.”

Within her brokerage team, Joanne fosters a supportive and collaborative environment. “Work together. I’m always happy to give my opinion. I’m also always happy to listen to a fellow broker.”

Balancing work with personal life is a challenge Joanne openly acknowledges. “I don’t. I work 24-7. I am always reachable for my clients.”

“Joanne is a hometown girl which gives her the first hand knowledge and experience of the area she serves. She gave us a thorough run down of several places we were interested in and one that we weren’t. Wouldn’t you know, that was the home we would make our own! Joanne is a personable, always available and knowledgeable guide for us as flat landers new to the area. We highly recommend her for any real estate needs.”

Outside of real estate, Joanne’s interests include her love for nature, cars, and modeling. “I’m a car enthusiast. I love cool cars! I also like to model and act in my spare time. I love nature, too.”

Malone Home is located in High Hampton, exudes old Cashiers charm and is convenient to Cashiers.The carport separates the guest house and the main house with a gas grill and seating area on one side. Local infrastructure is not the same here as it is in metropolitan neighborhoods. There area several communities that are impelenting fiber optic internet services, but most of our properties use wifi, which tends to be slower than the wifi in urban areas. We encourage our guests to take full advantage of the mountains and get out to explore and enjoy.

Yes! We welcome dogs at many of our rentals. Please see our website for specific properties. There is a non-refundable pet fee.

Yes, we have several properties that provide our guests access to community amenities and close proximity to public access activities.

There are many hiking trails for everybody - not to mention the waterfalls in the area and the unique shopping. Ask our rentals team or check out our blogs at landmarkvacations.com for more suggestions.

Your toothbrushes and personal care items. Landmark Vacation Rentals prides itself on its professional laundry service, which provides bed linens and bathroom towels. A starter kit is in the home when you arrive that includes coffee, dish soap, dishwasher pods, a scrubbing sponge, laundry detergent, paper towels, toilet paper, and hand soap.

Western North Carolina has abundant wildlife (bears, deer, turkey, snakes, and more). Please do not feed the bears! Garbage disposal instructions are provided for each property. Garbage needs to be properly bagged; most homes do have garbage pickup. Please help us keep you and our wildlife safe by following our instructions.

If you are staying at a property with keyless entry, you will receive a text with your door code when your rental is ready and you can go directly to the property. If you are staying at a property with a keyed entry, we provide three after-hours check-in locations. Please follow the provided directions as GPS isn’t always reliable on the mountain.

As someone who lives and works on the plateau, I found myself captivated by Those We Thought We Knew, David Joy’s latest novel which takes place in the town of Sylva, just a short drive from Cashiers. The gritty realism and personal touch is what makes this story feel genuine from start to finish.

In this tale of murder and revelations, Joy’s exploration of race and identity cuts deep, challenging the characters and the reader to confront uncomfortable truths that are all too often ignored or whitewashed by those in power. As the story unfolds, we discover that some of these seemingly good-willed townspeople are behind a sinister campaign to perpetuate their hateful beliefs.

At the center of this story is Toya Gardner, a collegiate artist who speaks truth to the powers that be through provocative artworks. Her work shines a light on the darkness that lies beneath the surface of the town and so many like it, that community members, including her own grandmother would rather pretend it doesn’t exist.

Although this story takes place in a small college town in the southeast, its overarching message resonates in all across the country today. History should be a tool of our betterment. Activists like Toya show us that we shouldn’t shy away from the horrors of our past, instead we must learn from them. If the sins of those before us are not reconciled with, evil ways will permeate and corrupt the soul of communities like Sylva.

When tensions over the removal of a confederate statue on the steps of the Sylva courthouse boil over, chaos ensues and Toya Gardner is murdered. This tragedy exposes the fractures within the town, forcing characters like Sheriff John Coggins to deal the ghosts of their past and the beliefs that still divide them. Torn between tradition and progress, the sheriff embarks on a journey of self-discovery as he grapples with his long held convictions about race and family.

Joy knows that although history may be black and white, our perceptions and biases are far from it. We see the fallout of Toya’s death from the perspective of people who all believe they are righteous in their opinions, yet are a world apart in what they perceive as the truth of how things are in the world.

In a refreshing departure from traditional murder mysteries, Joy eschews a tidy resolution in favor of a more introspective exploration of guilt and complicity. As the truth unravels, we are left to grapple with the realization that the true villain is not a shadowy figure, but the collective failings of our society.

Despite the heaviness of its themes, Those We Thought We Knew kept me engaged throughout. Joy’s prose is both haunting and evocative, transporting readers to the heart of the North Carolina mountains and the depths of the human soul. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys true crime modern mysteries.
