Having just returned from a long-awaited trip to England to see family and friends, I am excited and energized to start thinking about ‘the season.’ Soon enough, the green shoots of spring and summer will be here and all the associated events Landmark is proud to sponsor. We have a fantastic line-up of community events planned for the year, so make sure to check our calendar and book your trips to the Plateau, so you don’t miss out! Much fun should be had at the series of concerts in Highlands - Saturdays on Pine - and Cashiers - Groovin’ on the Greenalong with regular events like Plein Air and the Leaf Festival.

Real estate in 2022 is proving to be another interesting year. Due to the continuing lack of inventory, transactions and sales are down 15-20% from last year on the Plateau. From an inventory high of over 1,600 residential listings, we now have less than 150 in our multiple listing service. That hasn’t stopped our brokers from being very busy - in fact, January and February proved to be more active than anticipated. We are working very hard to serve our clients in every way we can, from answering questions from folks new to the area to facilitating large residential transactions and commercial developments.

We are looking forward to welcoming back faces we haven’t seen in a while and meeting new friends and clients. For those newer to the area, Landmark prides itself on our knowledge of the area and are so willing to share. In this special place that’s only about 20 square miles, there is so much geography, climate, flora and fauna to understand - alon g with the history and demographics of the area. With all the waterfalls in Highlands and Cashiers area, we may forget there is much to explore nearby. Rufus Morgan Falls is about 1.5 hours away in Macon County, just west of Franklin. The one-mile loop trail is a fair to moderate hike. The right loop is where many begin their journey from the well-marked parking area. This route will take you over some log and water crossings. Persons with balance issues or small children may wish to take the left loop, about 30 yards beyond the main parking area. Both trails are approximately one half-mile to the falls.

Although the hike is suitable for younger children, there are a lot of roots on the path. One needs to take their time and be sure-footed. Once you reach the top (about 300 feet elevation change), there is a small spur trail to the bottom of the falls. You can see and hear the falls from this spur. Be sure to take it to the base of the falls, where you will discover cool water to wade in as you feel the slight breeze from the falls. Many large boulders greet you, allowing for great photos.

To drive to the trailhead, take US 64 West of Franklin. From the 441S, Atlanta Exit, continue 64W about 3.7 miles and take a right onto “Old Murphy Road.” Take next left onto “Wayah Road,” Loafers Glory Store is on your left. Follow Wayah Road about 6 miles to FS388 (Forest Service Road) on your left. This is a gravel road. Continue FS388 for about 2 miles to “Rufus Morgan” trailhead and parking. The right loop begins here. The left loop is about 30 yards past the main parking area. Enjoy your adventure on one of my favorite hikes in the area.

As the last of the autumn leaves fell to the ground, I made my way up the gravel path of Highlander Mountain House to meet with professional organizer Heather Young, a tall, striking woman with a sweet smile. Isaac Werre started his career at Le Cordon Bleu Culinary School. After graduating, he moved to Florida, Colorado, and New Mexico, working and staging at various 5 star and Michelin-rated restaurants before moving back home to follow a career as a personal chef for Minnesota Timberwolves player Kevin Love. Missing the restaurant business, he and his wife moved to be with family in Paso Robles, CA. He then worked at DAOU Estate Winery and Justin Vineyards. While at Justin, The Restaurant at Justin was named Food and Wine, ‘Winery Restaurant of The Year.’ He now brings his incredible talents to the High Hampton Inn, here in Cashiers.

STARTER
MAIN COURSE

On a baking sheet, place tomatoes. Gather shallots and garlic. Cut the shallots in half and smash garlic with the back of a knife. Drizzle olive oil over all ingredients on the baking sheet. Bake for 8 min at 375d. After baking, place all ingredients in the stockpot with one qt of water. Bring to a boil and reduce liquid by half. Once reduced, place in a blender and puree on high, adding almond little by little until smooth. Strain through a fine sieve and season with salt and sherry vinegar. Chill for several hours. To serve: if desired, add basil, sliced tomatoes, jalapeños, corn, diced cucumber and a drizzle of extra-virgin olive oil.

RECIPE RECIPE

Gather 2 large sauce pans, in one bring broth to simmer over medium heat. Reduce heat to low; cover to keep warm—in the other sauce pan melt 1 1/2 tablespoons butter over medium heat. Add white onions and sauté until tender, about 6 minutes. Add rice; stir 1 minute. Add wine and stir until evaporated, about 30 seconds. Add 1 1/2 cups hot broth; simmer until absorbed, stirring frequently. Add remaining broth 1/2 cup at a time, allowing broth to be absorbed before adding more and frequently stirring until rice is creamy and tender about 35 minutes. Stir in cheese, Basque Peppers and the remaining two tablespoons butter. Season risotto with Olive Oil and Lime Sea Salt. Stir in parsley and lemon zest, transfer to a bowl. Garnish with basil extra-virgin olive oil and serve.

How long have you lived on the plateau and what brought you to the area?

What are the reason(s) you became a broker and how long have you been in the real estate industry?

Being from Charleston, SC, I had a full grasp of what a historical place Highlands is with such raw and natural beauty. After coming to the plateau for years, we decided to make it our full time residence and have been here for more than two years.

I’ve been in and around real estate my entire life. It began as a young child, my mother was a real estate broker in Florida and still today is an active broker in Bluffton, SC. I was recruited to play D-1 Men’s Tennis for Florida State University where I obtained by bachelors degree in Communication. I also received my Real Estate License in 2008 which led me to my professional career in construction sales and design in Charleston, SC for 12 years, which has been an asset to both my career and clients.

What is something that most people don’t know about you?

I am actually a “self” taught artist. My preferred medium is oil on panel and am drawn to Hyperrealism art. I have always had an interest and appreciation in art growing up but never practiced oil painting until my late 20’s. I entered my first art competition at the North Charleston Arts Festival when I was 31 and won the “Best in Show” Merit Award.

We enjoy spending nights walking the town, weekends hiking and exploring with our two Vizsla pups, Ruger & Finley. At home, there is always ongoing projects renovating our 1962 home we bought 2 years ago, turning her charm slowly into a mid-century modern escape.

The Plateau has so many things to see and do! For the energy enthusiast, a hike up Whiteside Mountain is a must! The views are breathtaking with some great photo opportunities. Glen Falls is a close second with fabulous waterfall views. For the “Foodies”, our go to is always Bistro Four 65, for their scrumptious baretta, mouthwatering meatballs and woodfire pizzas’! Other hit places to dine would be, The Library located in Sapphire, Highlands Smokehouse BBQ, Oak Steakhouse at Skyline Lodge and, of course, the iconic Ugly Dog Pub which offers great selection of beer and a friendly atmosphere! These are just a few to choose from.

How is the WiFi in your rentals?

fAQs

Local infrastructure is not the same here as it is in metropolitan neighborhoods. While most properties do have WiFi, the connection speeds are slower and cannot handle streaming on multiple devices simultaneously. We encourage our guests to take full advantage of the mountains and get out to explore and enjoy.

Do you offer petfriendly rentals?

Yes! We welcome dogs at many of our rentals. Please see our website for specific properties. There is a non-refundable pet fee.

Are there any amenities offered?

While Landmark Vacation Rentals does not offer any amenities, we do have several properties that provide our guests access to community amenities as well as close proximity to public access activities.

What activities are there nearby?

What should I bring?

There are many hiking trails for everybody - not to mention the waterfalls in the area and the unique shopping. Ask our rentals team or check out our blogs at landmarkvacations.com for more suggestions.

Your toothbrushes and personal care items. Landmark Vacation Rentals prides itself on its professional laundry service, which provides bed linens and bathroom towels. A starter kit is in the home when you arrive that includes coffee, dish soap, dishwasher pods, a scrubbing sponge, laundry detergent, paper towels, toilet paper, and hand soap.

What about wildlife?

Western North Carolina has abundant wildlife (bears, deer, turkey, snakes, and more). Please do not feed the bears! Garbage disposal instructions are provided for each property. Garbage needs to be properly bagged; most homes do have garbage pickup. Please help us keep you and our wildlife safe by following our instructions.

What is your cancellation policy?

Please refer to our website for exact details - these may vary from property to property.

What if I arrive late for check-in?

We provide three after-hours check-in locations. You will be directed to the most convenient location for your rental property, where you will pick up your check-in packet. Your packet will include printed directions to your rental. Please follow the printed directions as GPS isn’t always reliable on the mountain.
