Rather than trying to foresee the unpredictable future of 2024, I invite you to journey back in time with me as we reflect on our remarkable history.

Jill Katz’s odyssey in the world of hospitality traces its origins to the warm embrace of her native Florida. An innate flair for hospitality was ingrained in her at an early age, as her family was deeply entrenched in the industry. However, Jill truly nurtured her passion amidst the pristine landscapes of Minnesota. Here, she took the helm at the Grandview Lodge in Nisswa, situated on the enchanting Gull Lake. Her dedication to crafting unforgettable guest experiences began to bloom in these serene surroundings. Her journey, spanning from the sunny shores of Florida to the snow-covered landscapes of Minnesota, is a testament to her unwavering commitment to the art of hospitality.

What is one thing that most people might not know about running a custard shop but wish they did?

“Having an excellent product is crucial, but another very important consideration is providing a pleasant experience for the guest from the time they walk through the door. We achieve this through a combination of eclectic decor, clean restrooms, and most importantly, friendly interaction between our staff and guests.”

A Sweet Beginning in Cashiers

Jill’s transition to the picturesque town of Cashiers marked the start of an extraordinary chapter in her hospitality career. Alongside her husband, Badge, she co-founded Crossroads Custard, a local gem that is much more than just a frozen dessert haven. From the outset, their vision was clear: to create a space where community thrives and every visitor feels like part of an extended family.

Can you share any memorable moments or stories from your time at Crossroads Custard, such as a particularly happy customer or a challenging situation you had to overcome?

“The most heartwarming moments occur for us when we interact with the young children that are in the shop. A “thumbs-up” gesture when asked if they like the custard, or a response of, “this is my favorite place to come,” or memorable when a sixyear-old girl asked how old she had to be before she could start working here. These heartfelt comments from the young ones are truly music to our ears and help validate what we are trying to achieve.”

Crossroads Custard is more than just a place to indulge in frozen delights; it’s a hub where residents and visitors gather to share stories, laughter, and friendship. What are some plans or goals for Crossroads Custard, and how do you see the business evolving in the years to come?

“We are trying to find ways to expand our business beyond the shop’s four walls. We are currently renovating a 1978 Chinook camper into a mobile custard stand, in order to attend local events, festivals, and gatherings. We also are delving into providing food catering for small events, which is an under-served market in our area.”

In the world of culinary Craftsmanship, few brands have captured the hearts of professional chefs and home cooks quite like Le Creuset. A Journey from Architectural Design to Real Estate Success

Lesley Howard’s path into the world of real estate was an unexpected one.

“It was a fluke!” After graduating from Vanderbilt University, she set her sights on a career in architectural and interior design. However, life had other plans for her when she and her husband relocated to Delray Beach, FL, before she could complete her final semester at O’More College of Design. Lesley’s dreams of becoming an ASIDcertified interior designer were put on hold.

It was a friend’s suggestion that changed the course of her career. Recognizing Lesley’s background in architectural and interior design, her friend recommended she explore real estate. Little did she know that this leap of faith would lead to a successful 38-year journey in the real estate industry!

In 2000, Lesley moved permanently to her summer home on the plateau, facing the challenges of single motherhood with two young boys. She needed a stable job with a steady income, and she found just that by working for Greene & Associates, which later her colleagues would leave and open their business Mountainworks. She enrolled in evening classes at Southwestern College to qualify for an N.C. Real Estate License. From that point, Lesley’s journey in real estate began to take shape.

Over the years, Lesley worked for various local real estate firms until she found her home at Landmark Realty Group in the spring of 2015. Jane Ebberts, the co-owner, entrusted Lesley to take over her business as she moved to Utah, and this marked a turning point in Lesley’s career. Communication is key for Lesley, and she constantly contacts her clients through various channels. She isn’t in the business solely for quick sales and paychecks; she’s committed to helping clients find the right property, even if it takes years!

Lesley’s clients praise her for her patience, willingness to prioritize their needs, and extensive knowledge of all aspects of real estate. She values the relationships she builds with clients, many of whom become lifelong friends after closing the deals.

For those considering buying or selling property in her area, Lesley recommends working with a full-time broker with years of experience on the plateau. How is the WiFi in your rentals?

Local infrastructure is not the same here as it is in metropolitan neighborhoods. There area several communities that are impelenting fiber optic internet services, but most of our properties use wifi, which tends to be slower than the wifi in urban areas. We encourage our guests to take full advantage of the mountains and get out to explore and enjoy.

Do you offer petfriendly rentals?

Yes! We welcome dogs at many of our rentals. Please see our website for specific properties. There is a non-refundable pet fee.

Are there any amenities offered?

Yes, we have several properties that provide our guests access to community amenities and close proximity to public access activities.

What activities are there nearby?

There are many hiking trails for everybody - not to mention the waterfalls in the area and the unique shopping. Ask our rentals team or check out our blogs at landmarkvacations.com for more suggestions.

What should I bring?

Your toothbrushes and personal care items. Landmark Vacation Rentals prides itself on its professional laundry service, which provides bed linens and bathroom towels. A starter kit is in the home when you arrive that includes coffee, dish soap, dishwasher pods, a scrubbing sponge, laundry detergent, paper towels, toilet paper, and hand soap.

What about wildlife?

Western North Carolina has abundant wildlife (bears, deer, turkey, snakes, and more). Please do not feed the bears! Garbage disposal instructions are provided for each property. Garbage needs to be properly bagged; most homes do have garbage pickup. Please help us keep you and our wildlife safe by following our instructions.

What is your cancellation policy?

What if I arrive late for check-in?

If you are staying at a property with keyless entry, you will receive a text with your door code when your rental is ready and you can go directly to the property. If you are staying at a property with a keyed entry, we provide three after-hours check-in locations. You will be directed to the most convenient location for your rental property, where you will pick up your check-in packet. Your packet will include printed directions to your rental. Please follow the provided directions as GPS isn’t always reliable on the mountain.
