We are very excited that you’re reading this magazine.

It’s our 50th edition of Landmark’s Collection magazine. Since its debut in 2005, we have published 3 magazines a year with only one or two exceptions. We had an online version during Covid. Please enjoy some of our articles about events that have taken place already this year and learn about our busy fall season and what’s going on in and around ‘the Plateau’, as well as enjoying some great photography of our homes for sale and rent.

Inside you’ll see the photos from the 1st Annual Highlands Dog Show sponsored by Landmark Realty Group and the Park on Main and our first book club meeting which both took place in September.

Landmark’s beginnings in 2004 were built with community and preservation in mind. Since then, lots has changed in the world around us, but we hope not too much has changed here in our special place. Our brokers and employees are people with roots in our community, as well as the knowledge to provide useful resources to our clients and guests. If you’re a newcomer to the area there’s a lot to learn. Landmark can help you whether you need recommendations on a hiking trail, good food, or any type of service provider. We also know about internet providers and while we may not have the best internet in the world, I like to think this may be Mother Nature’s reminder to all of us to unplug, relax and enjoy the scenery.

Landmark established itself as a leading brokerage in this market and continues to hold a strong leadership position – we’re not anywhere else, we specialize only in this area and our offices are locally managed. We still value community and continue to give back year after year to what we hold dear.

It’s not quite a year in review yet, but we’re in October and it’s been another interesting year in the market. Lots of opinions, lots of speculation, lots of hopes and worries. Uncertainty abounds and will likely continue at least through the winter. With uncertainty comes hesitation. With hesitation comes inaction and less likelihood of buying or selling. The market on the Plateau has ‘plateaued’, similar to most areas of the country. We have an increasing inventory, and we have a good supply of buyers. However, some are saying it’s the perfect storm with no corner of the housing market immune from the vagaries of this emerging market.

Stay tuned for more updates in a couple of months as we wrap up 2022. Never hesitate to drop in and see us or we’ll see you around town.

How long have you lived here and why do you call it home?

My husband’s family brought me to the plateau in 1981. I fell in love with the area and life style so Curtis and I decided to stay start our businesses and raise a family.

What do you and your family do in your free time?

We hike, boat and spend time with our friends, children and grandchildren.

Who or what inspires you?

Working closely with a buyer or seller to achieve their goals be it when they are buying or selling properties.

What advice can you give sellers and buyers?

Get good advice from your broker about the market at the current time. Look closely at active and new properties that become available for however long it takes to make the right purchase.

What is something that most people don’t know about you?

I love to garden. Always looking for that special or unique bush or flower to plant.

As a local resident, what is your normal dayto-day on the plateau outside of Real Estate? Take a walk in my subdivision or ride the ATV to the lake to take in the fresh air and the beauty of the mountains.

KALE SALAD

INGREDIENTS

1/2 cup dry quinoa (tri-color or regular white)

1 + 1/4 cup water

2 cups chopped kale

1 can chickpeas (15 oz – drained and rinsed)

1/3-1/2 cup finely chopped red onion

1/2 cup crumbled feta cheese

1/4 cup sliced almonds

LEMON DRESSING

1.5 lemons, juiced

3 tbsp light olive oil

1 tsp wine vinegar

1 clove garlic

1/4 tsp sea salt or extra, to taste

1/4 tsp black pepper

1/8 tsp dried dill or to taste (optional)

First, rinse and drain your quinoa using a mesh strainer. Bring a small pot to medium heat and lightly toast the quinoa to remove any excess water, stirring often. This step is optional but adds to the quinoa’s nuttiness and fluff factor! Next, add your water, set the burner to high, and bring it to a boil. Once boiling, reduce heat to low and simmer, covered with the lid slightly ajar, for 12-13 minutes or until quinoa is fluffy and the liquid has been absorbed.

Once your quinoa is ready, fluff with a fork and season with salt and pepper to taste. Transfer to a medium bowl to cool.

While the quinoa cooks, wash and dry your chopped kale and massage with a drizzle of oil and a pinch of salt for extra tenderness, Toss kale with chickpeas, bell pepper, red onion, and sliced almonds (you can chop these small if you’d like some in every bite). Mix in quinoa.

Whisk together all the ingredients for the lemon dressing and give it a taste. If you like the tartness of the lemon juice, keep it as is, or feel free to add a little extra oil or sweeten it with a tad of honey. Pour over salad and mix well. Top with crumbled feta and enjoy.

BABA GANOUSH

INGREDIENTS

3 medium Italian eggplants (about 2 pounds/900g total)

2 tablespoons (30 ml) lemon juice from 1 lemon, plus more as desired

4 medium cloves garlic, minced

1 tablespoon (45 ml) sesame oil

1/2 cup (80 ml) extra-virgin olive oil, plus more for serving Kosher salt to taste

Grill or bake the eggplant. Grill the eggplant whole over an open flame over medium-high heat (I used my grill, but you can cook it on the gas burner), occasionally turning, with a pair of tongs, until the eggplant has fully charred on the outside The flesh has collapsed and softened (about 15 to 20 minutes). Alternatively, you can roast the eggplant in a high-heated oven. In this case, cut the eggplant in half, place its flesh on a sizable lightly-oiled baking sheet, and roast at 425 F for about 40 minutes or until the eggplant is very soft and cooked through.

Cool and Drain Well. Put the cooked eggplant in a colander and, using a knife, open it up a bit so that it will cool quickly and drain its juices. Push down on the eggplant with the back of the spoon so that any excess water will drain well.

Peel off the skin. When cool enough to handle, peel the charred skin off the eggplant and the stem and discard (Note: if you baked the eggplant instead, you might need to scoop out the flesh with a spoon.

Gently mix the eggplant with the remaining ingredients. At this point, ensure your eggplant is thoroughly cooled and is rid of excess water, then transfer it to a large bowl. Add in the Sesame Oil (a good Tablespoon for rich and nutty flavor), minced garlic and fresh lemon juice. Season with a good pinch of kosher salt. Place in a blender and buzz until smooth.

Chill. If you have the time, cover the Baba Ganoush and chill it in the fridge for a few minutes.

Pork Tenderloin

One 1 1/4-pound pork tenderloin

4 leaves fresh sage

Coarse salt and freshly ground black pepper

1 tablespoon plus 1 teaspoon vegetable oil

1 pound seedless grapes

1 shallot, sliced

1 teaspoon red wine vinegar

PORK TENDERLOIN & POTATOES

Oven Roasted Potatoes

2 pounds red and yellow potatoes

2 tablespoons olive oil

1 teaspoon garlic powder

3 Tbsp chopped rosemary, parsley, basil

½ teaspoon paprika

coarse salt and pepper to taste

Heat oven to 425 degrees. Tie pork with kitchen twine. Separate grapes into small clusters. Heat 1 tablespoon oil in a large ovenproof skillet over medium-high heat. Sear pork on all sides until golden, about 8 minutes, then remove from heat and set aside. Add remaining oil to pan with grapes, shallot, and remaining sage. Season with salt and pepper. Nest pork in center of pan. Season pork with salt and pepper.

Preheat oven to 425°F. Scrub potatoes (do not peel them). Dice into 1” cubes. If time allows, soak potatoes in cold water for up to 1 hour. (This removes starch and makes for a fluffier potato). Chop up the fresh herbs. Drain and dry potatoes, if required. Toss potatoes, olive oil, herbs, and seasonings. Place on a baking sheet and bake for 30-35 minutes until browned and tender.

The festive event in Helen is said to be the longest-running Oktoberfest in the country, dating back to the late 1960s as a way to attract tourists. And who can resist the beautiful town that looks like a village in the state of Bavaria in southern Germany, home to the northern rim of the Alps. In fact, Helen is often referred to as Georgia’s Alpine village or Little Bavaria. Regardless of the name, Oktoberfest is this region’s event of the year.

Oktoberfest begins on the second weekend in September, only open Thursday through Sunday throughout the month; then, in October the festival is open daily through October 30th. Planning to enjoy the fun? Sundays are a good day since admission is free for the duration of the event. How is the WiFi in your rentals?

fAQs

Local infrastructure is not the same here as it is in metropolitan neighborhoods. While most properties do have WiFi, the connection speeds are slower and cannot handle streaming on multiple devices simultaneously. We encourage our guests to take full advantage of the mountains and get out to explore and enjoy.

Do you offer petfriendly rentals?

Yes! We welcome dogs at many of our rentals. Please see our website for specific properties. There is a non-refundable pet fee.

Are there any amenities offered?

While Landmark Vacation Rentals does not offer any amenities, we do have several properties that provide our guests access to community amenities as well as close proximity to public access activities.

What activities are there nearby?

There are many hiking trails for everybody - not to mention the waterfalls in the area and the unique shopping. Ask our rentals team or check out our blogs at landmarkvacations.com for more suggestions.

What should I bring?

Your toothbrushes and personal care items. Landmark Vacation Rentals prides itself on its professional laundry service, which provides bed linens and bathroom towels. A starter kit is in the home when you arrive that includes coffee, dish soap, dishwasher pods, a scrubbing sponge, laundry detergent, paper towels, toilet paper, and hand soap.

What about wildlife?

Western North Carolina has abundant wildlife (bears, deer, turkey, snakes, and more). Please do not feed the bears! Garbage disposal instructions are provided for each property. Garbage needs to be properly bagged; most homes do have garbage pickup. Please help us keep you and our wildlife safe by following our instructions.

What is your cancellation policy?

Please refer to our website for exact details - these may vary from property to property.

What if I arrive late for check-in?

We provide three after-hours check-in locations. You will be directed to the most convenient location for your rental property, where you will pick up your check-in packet. Your packet will include printed directions to your rental. Please follow the printed directions as GPS isn’t always reliable on the mountain.
