A/W 2018/2019: PREDESTINATE A ccording to vocabulary.com, predestinate is something that has been planned or arranged already-there’s no way to change its outcome. The reason why I chose ‘Predestinate’ as my main theme is because the past has happened, we are living the present, and we only have the future to look forward to. The future has been determined by us, and we know we will live in a more futuristic world with modern technology that will make our lives more easier. The world we live in now is changing everyday, new trends are coming out every hour, new inventions are made everyday, while creating new inventions we are using the past to create a new modern twist on concepts and trends. The people from the past has also predicted the future, the time we live in today. Time magazine has said “Visionaries of the past imagined a world that subsited on kelp, exercised mind-control with grouch pills and genetically modified tomatoes to fit perfectly on sandwiches”. The visionaries of the past and their visions have proven right as we are experiencing these new inventions today, and new technology startups are created to meet the needs of the society and to invent the next big thing. For the sub-themes, I got my inspirations from reading trend publications ike the Viewpoint and the View. The Viewpoint published a list of emerging design movements across the lifestyle industries and their influence on color, shape and form. The sub-themes are (in order) :Cubism, Brutalism, Space Odyssey, Haute Tech and Digital Stream. Cubism: It is chosen as the first theme before the concept of Cubism started first, it started in the 20th century.I believe that while moving forward and ahead, we can look back at past trends and create something meaningful that will become the new trends in the next coming years. Brutalism: The second theme as it was started during the 1960’s.It follows the footsteps of Cubism as inspirations are taken from the past to create something modern and up to date. Haute Tech: It is used as the third theme because we have been experiencing textile production for many years now, it is the use of technology to produce intriguing fashion. Digital Stream: It is the use of technology and traditional fabrics to create interesting fashion. It incorporates technology and fabrics to create styles that light up. Space Odyssey: Humans have been interested in space for many years. This theme explores the future of fashion inspired by galactics and space. We are looking very forward with this theme, we are not looking behind past trends and we are focusing on the world besides our own.

CUBISM

7

CUBISM Cubism was one of the most influential visual art styles of the early twentieth century. It was created by Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque (French, in Paris between 1907 and 1914. It is the concept to emphasize two-dimensionality of the canvas to create objects that are geometric in forms. According to the viewpoint, cubism is experiencing a revival across design sectors from fashion to furniture. Designer s are inspired by cubism and they are creating pieces with blocks colors and geometriec forms. In order to create modern looks to the pieces, designers are contrasting surface textures and patterns. The Bauhaus pallete of mustard, navy and grey is widely popular. Block colors and square cuts are also very popuar in fashion.

BRUTALISM

19

BRUTALISM Brutalism was a movement in architecture which was popular in the 1960s and 1970s. Merriam-webster wrote “It is a style in art and especially architecture using exaggeration and distortion to create its effect (as of massiveness or power). Today, factors such as interior, fashion and products are referencing the architecutural movement of Brutalism. It is the movement that takes its inspiration from urban environments, industrial materials for its aesthetic qualities. The fashion industry are recreating the brutalist movement by creating pieces that are functional and demure feminity. Style that resembles warehouses, factories and underground bunkers are used in high fashion.Color such as orange, dark red and gray in 500 shades are used to create technical surfaces and structural forms.

HAUTE TECH “ Advances in 3D printing have led textile designers to hack traditional textile craft, combining techniques and materials to create entirely new constructions and aesthetics-Viewpoint. This theme is inpsired by technological advances in 3D printing and technology, we are able to manipulate fabrics and create fabrics and designs that are aesthetically intriguing and beautiful at the same time. Instead of using traditional method of weaving and knitting textiles, designers are using 3D printers to create their collections. One of the designers to create her collections using 3D is Iris Van Herpen. Iris creates modern looks with the help of her techniques and digital technology. 3D printers will be readily available for the mass population to purchase, and with this designers are creating digital files that can be downloaded and printed at home. Designers like Danit Peleg is creating looks that can be printed at home, and she is designing her products so that the digital files can be downloaded and printed. While 3D printing is used to create looks that are three-dimensional, designers are also using laser techonology to cut fabrics. Laser cutting is the process of using laser to cut into surface giving textiles a cleaner, accurate cut and higher quality finish than blade cutting. Using laser cutting for textiles and fabrics brings a 3-dimensional element to the looks as the fabrics bend and fold into origami=like structures.

DIGITAL STREAM Today, wearable technology are invented almost everyday. Apple just launced apple watch, and it is predicted that the market of the wearable technology will strongly grow in the future. Companies are investing on wearable technology such as smartwatches which allows health monitoring, and now designers and engineers are trying to develop washable, flexile and wearable digital fabric. This theme focus on the LED fashion, fashion that lights up with the help of technology. Designers are creating fashion styles that lights up which are embedded with LED lights and motion sensors, that also detects movements and changes light accordly. Cute Circuit, a technology fashion house in London has created fashion styles through the use of smart textiles and micro-electronics. According to Cutecircuit, the technology used has no hazardous substances present in the products and they are safe to wear as they have been tested for safety and manufactured without harmful materials.

SPACE ODYSSEY 54

55

56

SPACE ODYSSEY It started as a rejuvanated interest in space explorations. Designers are taking aesthetic cues from both classic space=chic and new technology. For this theme, a lot of metallics and sparkle are used for fabrics and textile. Designers are using galactica and space as inspirations in designing and creating their pieces. Futuristic sunglasses, metallics bags, and irisdescent embellishments are used for trims and accessories. High definition color of cool metallics and deep blues are used to give intergalactic feelings.

57

SPACE ODYSSEY:COLOR

58

The colors for Space Odyssey are very vibrant with deep tones. Purple is the main color for this theme, there are many shades of purple used in this trend book as well. I chose purple as the main color theme because it reminds me of the galaxy and the sky above. Since I am predicting a space odyssey theme, it is appropriate to use purple in this case. Although purple is used alot, colors such as dark red, orange, and blue are used as well as they compliment the color purple well. There are many choices of metallic colors and fabrics that will be in trend and popular in the next three to four years. In 2018 and 2018, there will be more metallics that are new and different to the fashion industry. For the pantones colors, there are no metallics used in this trend book as most of the metallics are not availabe in pantone tcx.
