ACCOUNTING

In January of this year - a mere seven months ago, Vegas’ Sage Gazan was racing the boys in 10 Intermediate. After winning all three days at the South Point’s Silver Dollar Nationals, she officially turned Girl Expert - and has been on a tare ever since. “She works all the time,” says her BMX Sharks teammate Cedric Cade. Being homeschooled has its advantages and Sage tells us she trains about four hours each day - from riding their backyard pump track to doing sprints, or just getting track time at one of Vegas’ many tracks. They call her “The Mutant” - and for a good reason. “My dad gave me that nickname,” Sage explains. “A mutant is a super-human who finds their super power at adolescence.” Already killin’ it in 10girls, we’ve gotta admit that’s one of the most appropriate nicknames we’ve ever heard. Come November, she’ll attend her very first Grands and will likely be up for a NAG No.1 plate and possible National Top-10 number.

BROEY’s SQUAREBODY Joey Carberry (aka “Broey”) is a former BMXer who works for the SquareBody Syndicate - America’s best known source for all things Chevy C-10 (known as “square bodies”). Nearly two years ago, he started this BMX themed C-10, modeled after the legendary Mongoose factory team suburban. Broey recreated the bagged beast from archived photos and ads, and it turned out so sweet that Street Trucks magazine did a cover / feature story on it in their latest issue. BIG CHANGES FOR

T-BONE

Elite Pro Tanner Sebesta has returned to Redman Bikes - his previous sponsor as an amateur. “I’m pumped! I rode for Redman bikes in my final two years of amateur. In those two years I went from being a Top-4 rider to winning almost every national. Within the next month or so you will see us all kitted-up in HotShoppe uniforms with our Tomahawk 3 frames! On top of that, T-Bone will be track operator for the all new LoneStar BMX in San Antonio - which is currently under construction.

Custom BADGES 100% KASIA Jen Green has combined her two loves - jewelry and cycling, into a cool career. She makes hand-made head tube badges for all kinds of bikes - including BMX. All of the badges are hand fabricated and soldered by hand, using a variety of metals. Nothing is done by machine. On average, a badge ranges from $150-$175 in the mixed metals. Add a bit more for sterling silver or excessive lettering and detail. Here are just a few fine examples of her work.

Designed in SoCal and handcrafted in Italy with French optics, 100% just introduced the latest addition to their long line up of sunglasses. With high quality lenses, made with hydrophobic and oleophobic treatments. The inlaid ultra-grip rubber nose and temple tips provide a secure fit and includes a custom 100%® microfiber pouch. MSRP $110 to $150. Now that the BMX World is getting back outside, and #backonTrack, in the summer sun, we could all use a new pair of sunglasses.

GOSSIP COLUMN:

INSIGHT’s NEW VISION2 3D plate While everybody was in lockdown, INSIGHT released their new Gen-2 version of the Vision plate; this one being 3D and super high-tech looking, with a ton of ventilation for better airflow to keep your stem cool. Available in five colors (Black, Translucent Black, Red, Blue, Neon Yellow), you can pick one up from your nearest shop or order online for a mere $20.

ZERONINE frames 2020

BMX Hall of Famer SCOTT CLARK and his brother BRETT over at TRUVUaquariums.com have created and donated custom PPE guards for the windows on the USA BMX big rigs. Thanks, TruVu! l

l Big news over at RACE INC., as they have a new Canadian owner - MARC COTE from Montreal. Better yet, new partner in crime MICHAEL GAMSTETTER (formerly with BRaIN, Box and DK) will be helping with the re-branding. l

Spotted in the factory pits in Rock Hill, the latest frame on the BMX scene comes to you from the newly revitalized Zeronine brand. Made in the U.S. (by you-know-who), Zeronine should have 20” and cruiser frames available in late July / early August.

THE GRANDS To quash all of the wild rumors we’ve been hearing in the pits, let us assure you that the Greatest Race on Earth - the USA BMX Grands, will be happening Thanksgiving weekend, in TULSA! (Not Arizona. Not anywhere else. Not cancelled or postponed). Plan on it.

TRIBUTE-GRAPHIC HARO CITIZEN If you weren’t around in 1982, when Bob Haro first came out with his first production “Freestyler” frame, then you might not recognize this combo of color and graphics. Haro fan Steve Waldron gets credit for this radical tribute, custom painting his modern-day HARO Citizen carbon frame to match an original 80’s Freestyler.

Back in the 90’s,BOMBER numberplates (made by Oregon BMX legend SCOTT SNOOK), were the hot ticket. Now, in 2020, a tribute plate has hit the scene, called BUMMER - using the same graffiti-style of lettering. l One of the first losses our sport saw during the COVID Crisis was the death of the RAIL THE BERM podcast, as they had no National events to talk about or criticize. Producer BRAD DeBUSK and his crew did put in a good, long run at it - airing 282 episodes since their start in 2016. l PULL Magazine

POUNDFOOLISH l If you race in the thriving San Diego BMX scene, then you ‘ve probably noticed the POUNDFOOLISH race team at many of the locals. Electric Push Bikes: STACYC

The STACYC 16eDRIVE is the perfect choice for little rippers with some experience on a balance bike who want to go a little faster. STACYC describes it as, “the holy grail of fun,” for tiny tykes on balance bikes. In March of 2019, HARLEY-DAVIDSON acquired STACYC, with a plan to build the next generation of throttletwisters. Just don’t have your 5 & Under show up at a USA BMX National on one. MSRP: $649 to $699

SNAKE -vs- MONGOOSE Turns out they are a customized watch maker with BMX roots and a full-on Factory team. Co-owned by BMX fanatic GENE FARRIS, Poundfoolish has a wide assortment of U.S.-made watches, ranging from $500 to $1,500 and would look great on the wrists of any BMXer.

While practicing at Rock Hill BMX for the upcoming CarolinaNats, a big ol’ black pine snake would soon regret crossing the track. He was nabbed and placed on Mason Hayes’ Mongoose - for a recreation of the legendary Snake -vsMongoose rivalry. Google it.

REMEMBERED

TERRY COX The Godfather of Louisiana BMX

The story of BMX in Louisiana cannot be told without the mention of one mans name. Terry Cox. Terry had a son Timmy that started racing in the early 80’s and like most BMX dads Terry was supportive and involved with his son’s new found passion. So much so he became the track operator of Bayou City BMX in the mid 80’s. For the next 35 years, Terry would announce, setup, do sign-ups, officiate, and give out trophies. Every kid would get a trophy if it were up to Terry. To this day, anybody who has raced BMX in Lousiana at one time or another - from the 80’s, 90’s or 00’s, will fondly remember Terry Cox and his contributions to the sport of BMX.

MIKE DEVITT - a BMX Icon Since his passing on May 8th, many in the BMX World have referred to Mike Devitt as the “Steve Jobs of BMX.” “He meant a lot to many people in the BMX world,” said fellow BMX Hall of Famer Perry Kramer, whose first sponsor in 1974 was from Devitt’s Dirt Masters team. “Mike listened to me, as he did with a lot of people. That was one thing that made him such a great human being. Mike had his thoughts and beliefs, but he would take the time to listen to what you had on your mind.”

JANET MICHAEL from Hamilton BMX Janet Michael, clerk for Hamilton BMX, enjoyed every aspect of the sport, but mostly enjoyed being a beacon of support for our young riders at the track. Janet was funny and strong, and her leadership was infectious. Because of her, Hamilton BMX has gained a reputation of a family fun environment for all of our riders and their families. On May 1, 2020, Janet lost her battle with cancer - leaving behind her husband and two sons.

FRANK GODFREY from Bellflower BMX “The World lost a great man,” stated Bellflower BMX TO Tammy Estep. “There will never be anyone who can ever replace the love he had for all of us. Never a bad word to say about anything or anyone no matter who or what it was, he was always kind and helpful. He was truly the first friendly face you saw when you hit the track. If he did not have a hose, shovel, or rake in his hand he would be helping with signups or the snack bar. He always had words of encouragement to everyone. He was the best listener and never judged anyone. Everyone loved Frank.”

Devitt’s start in BMX came in the very beginning, working with Bike-Ette - selling BMX accessories like bars, grips and fenders. He’d do the same with DirtMasters, while at the same time founding Makaha skateboards. When Scot Breithaupt started SE Racing, Mike helped out financially and was put in charge of production. “Mike kept SE going long after BMX was hot. He loved the brand, and he loved manufacturing stuff,” recalls P.K. After SE, Mike teamed up with Gary Turner to form Aliant Bikes in the late 90’s. He was inducted into the BMX Hall of Fame in 1994, as a true BMX Pioneer. PULL Magazine

Kyle Norton (NAG 9) is one of the fastest cats out of the Pacific Northwest. He battled with 15X winner Peter Choat all weekend long.

ON TRACK At the beginning of May the Governor of Oklahoma, Kevin Stitt, started an advisory group to reopen their state. They appropriately chose the name of the “Bounce Back Advisory Group.” A few days later an opportunity to host an event in Pryor, Oklahoma arose, and the Bounce Back Nationals were born.

Mayes County BMX was constructed just under a year ago and sits inside MidAmerica Industrial Park, a 9000 acre facility making it one of the largest in the country. PULL: You were off to a great start of the year, leading in NAG points and for some time, National points. How has the Stay at Home orders affected your riding? ELI: I’ve not been able to ride my BMX bike as much. I had ZERO track access. Instead I tried to ride my backyard dirt jumps as much as possible. My dad was taking me to ride mountain bikes a whole lot at Kessler in downtown Kansas City. PULL: We see you’ve been pretty heavily involved in motorcycle motocross lately. How does that play in to your BMX? ELI: Motocross definitely will help you be in shape to go longer. It’s not like sprints or anything, but I’m riding long motos and the bike is way heavier. It makes me stronger. PULL: What are you more into right now - motocross or BMX? ELI: Still BMX. But motocross is the thing I’ve been able to do. There are some tracks here that have had a lot of practices and races, while the BMX tracks weren’t open at all. PULL: What are you most excited about with the return to the BMX season? ELI: I’m excited to hang out with my friends and race them. I miss being around all of my Full Tilt teammates ...a lot. PULL: What are your expectations for this year? ELI: I want to finally get NAG-1. I have a really fast class so it’s not easy. I’m going to have to work hard and not get sick. Then I want to just get better on my bike each year.

was suffering from a severe case of cabin fever. I’m sure most of you can relate. Shut indoors, shut-off from the world, and self-isolated, we all longed for the return to BMX racing. Like many of you, I had bingewatched nearly everything on Netflix and was starting to dig deep into the rabbit hole of Government conspiracy theories as the U.S. Air Force released footage of UFO’s. Working at home, I dreamt of the day that we could gather with our BMX friends and family again, to enjoy the speed and thrills of racing our bikes. During this whole Corona virus crisis, riding bicycles had apparently became popular again - as

essential bike shops were sold out of completes, repairs were thru the roof and neighborhoods were swarming with kids and adults experiencing the freedom of two wheels for the first time in decades. After two months without a single national or local race, word finally came down that the BMX circuit was back ON! WHEW! ...just in time, as I was about to re-watch The Tiger King series for the 10th time.

72

USABMX.COM H VOL. 10 / ISS. 4

The restart (or .... reboot, if you will) of the 2020 National series was a good sign that things would be back to normal again. ...or, at least, semi-normal. One week earlier, USA BMX had held their first National event in Pryor, Oklahoma - one of the few states in the entire country who would allow an event of that caliber to take place. .. According to the Sports ETA, USA BMX was the first major,

open-to -the-public spectator sporting event to re-launch in the U.S.. “Few sports may be better positioned than BMX to return to events,” they wrote up in a June 12th article, informing all sport promoters and sanctioning bodies on how to run an event in this new era. To run any National event during these times of a pandemic is like being a Circus lion, jumping through numerous flaming

hoops. And those hoops are always moving. With the virus still out there, several precautions have been initiated to prevent any additional risks of the spread. For starters, motos aren’t being posted anymore - which eliminates large gatherings around the moto boards. Motos are now being posted online-only, at: motos. usabmx.com (as they have been for a few years now). It makes

me wonder, if motos will ever be posted again? Registration methods have also changed, with pre-signing for a national being extended and encouraged more than ever. Registration windows at the trailer would be open, but preregistering online ahead of time helped prevent long lines and the close gathering of people. USA BMX has also been forced to look for new locations for their

Nationals, in the few States and cities that are open to having sporting events with large turnouts and spectators. With new rules and guidelines to follow, Arizona was a good option for re-hosting another big race - and Black Mountain BMX, who’d hosted the Winters back in February, was all up for doing it again. The BMX World let out a big sigh of relief when National No.2 of the ReBoot Series was announced. PULL Magazine

73

The biggest obstacle, however - wouldn’t be an infectious easilytransmittable virus. Instead, it was the first week of June in the Arizona desert. Temps were in the 100 to 110 degree range and could wind up being even more challenging than the rhythm section. But don’t worry folks ...as we like to say, “It’s a dry heat.” The Ams weren’t the only ones ready to get #BackonTrack after the long lockdown. Phoenix saw a great turnout of Pros, including AA superstars like Nic Long (Hyper), Jake Peebles (Jet Racing), Corben Sharrah (Daylight) and TangentRift’s Corey Reid. New Rookie pro sensation Riley House was ready to take on the big guns, and everybody was left wondering - where the heck was Cam Wood?! On Friday, it was Tangent’s Rookie - the reigning National No.1 Amateur from last year - Riley House, holding off Long and Peebles to score the big win. We even had a solid

class for the first-ever Women Pro Open class. Remix’s Rachel Mydock, J&R’s new college graduate (from CMU) Mikaela Lixandru and 316’s Rookie from Tucson Daleny Vaughn would battle it out all weekend with eventual winner Ashley Verhagen (Full Tilt) scoring the win on Friday and Saturday. Pros Unite! Led by Nic Long, all of the pros had discussed the idea of having a flat-pedals-only race on Sunday. But they just couldn’t wait that long and a gentlemen’s agreement was made to run flats on Saturday. This left some of the pros scrambling last minute to Tangent Pro Shop to buy some pedals or Vans. It was interesting to see the variety of shoe/pedal combinations being used, and it did seem to make the racing more fun - with an occasional foot-off turn maneuver. Right before Saturday’s flat-pedal main, Nic Long was overheard razzing Corben Sharrah, joking, “Corben! You going to a track meet after the races?” - referring to the Daylight rider’s choice of grey Nike’s he had on his feet. Corben just grinned and responded by smokin’ them all from PULL Magazine

Lane-8. It was great to see the Daylight Pro make an appearance on Saturday, and the current Pro points leader made his point and went home for Sunday. (Not to a track meet). In that final, Corey Reid bongo’ed his head hard into the third turn, but eventually walked to the medic tent on his own despite not knowing where he was going. Reid would be pulled for the rest of the weekend with

the concussion protocol. He’ll be back - this ain’t his first rodeo. Hyper’s Nic Long was seen doing double-duty, as he had a special documentary film crew following him around all weekend. They are putting together a pilot for a proposed BMX show that’ll bring BMX Racing to the masses if picked up by a major network. If there’s any personality in BMX who would be entertaining to host a TV series, it’d

be Hyper’s main-man. Soon after Phoenix, it was officially announced that the 2020 Pro series would change to a one-race takes all format; much like the Worlds or the Olympics. Sadly, Corben’s big points lead after three races would be cleared to zero, along with the rest of the pros. Now, Sharrah just needs to do exactly what he did last year in Tulsa (win it all) in order to become

our new No.1 Pro for 2020. This leaves our four Amateur titles still up for grabs and it looks like it’ll be a crazy title chase for Boys, Girls, Cruiser and Ladies Cruiser. Currently, the Amateur Boys chase is led by Full Tilt’s Sean Day, with Cedric Cade and Rowdy Holzer in hot pursuit. But let us warn you - keep an eye out for No.4 ranked Cole Freder-

ick. In Phoenix, whether it was a moto or main, the Full Tilt-Radio superstar was ON FIRE! For a 12x, the Kid looks more like a 15 or 16x, and he looks to be in a class all by himself. By the first jump, Cole would have a one or two bike-length lead - every single time. Then, after pullin’ his comp around the rest of Black Mountain, he’d usually finished with an entire last-straight lead (keep in mind, Black Mountain’s last straight is

a pretty short one - but it sounds good, don’t it?). There is little doubt that a National No.1 Amateur title is in the future of the Minnesota madman - whether it’s this asterik year or five years from now as a 17x. If Cole sticks with the sport ‘til his 20’s, I’ll be so bold as to predict a bright future as the sport’s No.1 Pro. And I’m sure there’ll be plenty of World Championships and rainbow jerseys between now and then. PULL Magazine

77

HIGH-TECH GIZZY-WHIZZER Anybody who walked down the first straightaway at Black Mountain might’ve noticed a stange looking device on a tripod, over by the medic tent. What IS that contraption?! We spoke to Mike the Main Medic, to get the scoop: Ooooh - it’s the Stankey one. Redding’s Mason Stankey was haulin’ buns in 15x.

“It’s a Wet Bulb Globe Thermoteter. (WBGT). This device measure air temperature, wind speed, humidity, and the sun’s radiant energy. It’s considered the gold standard for making participation limitations or restrictions out here on the track. We are able to log and measure the WBGT temperature every 30 minutes to ensure the rider’s safety. This is the same device used by the NFL, College universities and other pro sports organizations.”

One thing you can always count on - is that Ryder Lawrence will have the coolest Fox uniform.

If you want a safe bet for 2020, put your money on Cole Frederick for the No.1 Amateur title. Maybe then, FullTilt will get him a real numberplate.

PULL Magazine

79

Most participants in Phoenix were expecting some hot weather. They had no warning of this Hurricane! Hannah Leakey is quickly becoming the Queen of Triples.

Frederick already has the build, strength and skill of a Connor Fields and all of the work he does with Burlin at SuperCamp clinics, is molding him to become a modern-day Bubba Harris. Mark my words and get back to me in six years. On Saturday, it looked as if the Full Tilter and his Radio bike would again beat ‘em like a rented mule. Cole had an easy five or six bike length lead in the main and was blasting down the

80

USABMX.COM H VOL. 10 / ISS. 4

third straight, when suddenly, all by his lonesome, he took a hard digger. Just blew-up, all by himself. If it wasn’t so hard of a crash, he might’ve been able to get back up and still win, but he splatted on the hardpacked Black Mountain track pretty good, and that handed the lead and eventual win to Fast Frankie Stubbs. J&R’s Ryder Santos was hot on the Gordy rider’s tail, and suddenly it was a race! To say that Stubbs was stoked

on his 12x win would be an under-statement! We ran into Cole on Sunday and asked him what happened in that main. He blamed it all on the wind, which was blowin’ pretty strong during the mains. “I just caught a big gust, and it blew me away,” he explained. On Sunday, the wind-factor was at an all-time low by the time 12x lined up in the gate, and Cole wasn’t about to make the same mistake twice.

Word in the Box pits was that Jemma Tollefson didn’t touch her bike once during lockdown. That explains why she only won one main.

Another dominator all weekend long was J&R’s former No.1 Cruiser kid Hayden Passanisi. It’d be a safe bet that he didn’t lose a single race all three days. Whether it was in X-Open, cruiser or class, “Passin’-ain’t-Easy” scored the victories and a rare triple-triple! Passanisi wasn’t the only one to go unbeaten all three days. Black Mountain’s very own Hannah Leakey in 12girls - aka “The Hur-

ricane,” used her local speed and skills to triple it up for three days straight. But before you say it was just her local advantage - jump a few pages ahead to Rock Hill, where she’d repeat the process the following weekend! Triple-A Fire’s Danica Anderson likely would’ve done the same, if she had opted to race Mixed Open (but then she’d have to take on Stella Sunseri, which would be a great match-up!). Instead, she

stuck with her usual winning ways in 13 Girls and cruiser. The BMX prodigy child continues to amaze us with her jumping skills, whether she’s doubling-it-up over the triples with a quick lil’ cross up or manualing thru the rhythm at Pro speeds, there really is no other girl who can ride like Danica. A few other impressive girls on our “to watch” list are Kira Boustead, who seems to have come

out of nowhere to become the new 15-16 Girls dominator. Even on a cruiser, bumped up an age class, Kira whupped up on the 17-20 ladies. Alpha’s Annalyse Solano, Hyper’s Maddie Baird and J&R’s Stella Sunseri also racked up

their fair share of doubles - getting a big boost toward the NAG No.1 points lead and plate. The Ronnie Kim -vs- Cedric Cade Show continued in Arizona and it was one you did not want to miss! Showtimes were daily,

in the 14x motos, semi’s and mains. By the end of the weekend, the final tally wound up: Cedric: 2. Ronnie: 1. On Friday, The Entertainer was said to have moved over hard on Ronnie in the main, or that Ronnie just got the worst start of his

life, but either way - the outcome was a huge 3-bike length lead by Cade as he entered the first turn. He was gettin’ up and GONE on Friday - as Ronnie found himself stuck in third place, behind ReMix’s Andrew Rassi, and was forced to play catch-up. ...some-

thing that Kim is not used to doing. Cedric the Entertainer scored the win again on Saturday, snappin’ hard on the entire 14x class from lane eight, as if he were Corben Sharrah. You could tell that Cedric’s confidence meter was

revvin’ at an all-time high, and that Ronnie was struggling to get his head back in the game. It’s always a tough one when a rider as dominant over the past sixplus years, finally starts getting some competition, and is finally forced to battle from behind. PULL Magazine

Washington’s Kai Altendorf creates his own Autonomous Zone in 15x.

But if you know Ronnie Kim, rest assured that it won’t be that way for very long. The dude has a reserve-pack of determination. In Sunday’s 14x semi, Ronnie and Cedric were again lined up in the gate - for yet another awesome showdown. It is a semi, so you only need to take top-4 ... but Cedric, in his constant quest to get into Ronnie’s head, carved a bit hard into turn one and slid out while in second place. Maybe Ced was trying to live up to the Grindle-theory: “Show him a wheel, seal the deal.” This time, the only wheel Ron-

nie saw, was sliding out on the inside. With Ced out of the main, Sunday’s 14x final was all Ronnie Kim’s, to win or lose. ...and you get only one guess at which one it’d be. Tangent-Rift’s Nick Adams was already sporting the stars ‘n bars sleeve on his left arm - after winning the USAC Junior Men championship in Houston. Too bad there won’t be any more UCI races on the schedule for this year. Still, Adams still has a fast reputation to live up to and he didn’t disappoint this weekend. Nick took his Rift to two wins on two days in the ultra-

rough and tumble 17-20x class. Younger kids to older gents were all enjoying getting in some National-caliber racing this weekend. Among the fastest tiny tykes on little bikes was 8 experts Brady “HammerTime” Hamer and J&R’s Easton Johnson. Both of these hombres hail from Texas - Easton from El Paso and Brady from Midlothian. Both of these eight year olds took a daily-double back home to Texas. Redman’s Wyatt Williams was also rippin’ it up in 7x, along with 6x Grayson Novak - from Las Vegas. We see a LOT of talent

coming from these lil’ dudes! If I had to name one rider who came out of nowhere to make a name for himself this weekend, it’d have to be Factory ReMix’s flyin’ 15x Mason Stankey. The racer from Redding, California left his mark on by doublin’ down on two days - winning 15x and 15-16 X-Open twice. Considering he was up against the likes of Angel Montoya, Blake Powell and John Robbins III, he’ll be a name to remember. With Black Mountain BMX being in business for 40-plus years now, they have their share of super-fast, long time BMXers.

Among those older rippers who call Black Mountain their home are Eric Baca (Alpha), Jason Silva (Gordy’s) and Ken Heximer (Fall Risk Racing). All three of these old farts nabbed a handful of wins. The bearded Baca and Silva even double-doubled for their troubles. Most impressive in the 13x ranks was Hyper’s Parker Respass, who’d came out to Phoenix all the way from Virginia - and wasn’t about to go home with out a win or two ...or three. If you’re talking about one of the toughest classes in BMX

throughout history, you’d immediately think of the, “I just got my Driver’s License” class - 16x. Right now, there is no solid dominator in there and any kid who makes the main could very well win it. This weekend in the smoldering hot Arizona desert, two wins went to Full Tilt’s Brody Cole and the other was won by Answer’s “Birdman” - Brandon Crain. Also in the mix all weekend was Hyper’s Drew Polk, with his NAG No.1 plate, stickin’ on the podium and keepin’ them honest. After three days in the desert, and national moto-count ranging from 160 to 180, racing was wrapped up a little after 12 on Sunday, leaving everybody refreshed and ready for a nice drive home - already reminiscing about what a great time it was getting #BackonTrack. Due to the nature of these times, the number of campers and motorhomes in the back lot were bigger than normal, and for those who flew to Phoenix, were treated to a nearly deserted Sky Harbor airport.

In 12 cruiser, Ryder Lawrence scored two wins out of three tries. Not too shabby!

2019 was a memorable year for the Salisbury family. Their local track, Rock City BMX, hosted the Great Lakes Nationals and Abbey took her first national win. Mom is track operator at Rock City BMX, with dad being the Assistant at both the outdoor and indoor, and he’s been racing alongside his sister Abbey, for the past 10 years. Racing for Factory Remix, his best yearend finish was becoming NAG No.2 (on cruiser) in 2018. Most recently, Noah graduated high school (virtually) and has already signed on to attend Marian University. His best advice? “Never, ever, give up.”

In 2019, Drew won his class at the Mid-America Nationals, on his home track - in the rain, and with a photo-finish. very BMXer who has been here before wants to return. And many participants this weekend, some who were here for the very first time, got a taste of what makes this so great. Not just this track, but the entire city of Rock Hill, South Carolina, is such a cool community that loves all things cycling. There’s no doubt that the City of Rock Hill loves BMX. Which is why USA BMX was able to make this the third “reboot” National after the global-pandemic shut everything down. This weekend in particular, they were hosting this BMX National, along with softball and flag football tournaments, all happening at once - as a hopeful return to full-on normalcy. That’s not to say the usual precautions weren’t in place - social distancing and mask-wearing were still encouraged, and the new widely-distanced staging area was in full effect. The large span of bleachers on both sides of the track gave everybody plenty of room to space out from eachother, and the pit area on the green grassy fields were jampacked and spread out widely.

Friday kicked off with 212 motos, making it the largest turnout since the return to racing. Saturday wound up with 221 motos and Sunday wrapped up with 206. THE RIVALRY ...CONTINUES! If there were only one class to pay attention to in the sport right now, it’d have to be 14x. For the past year, we’ve seen the hotly-contested rivalry between Box’s franchise amateur - Ronnie Kim, and the BMX Shark on the prowl, Cedric “The Entertainer” Cade. Almost a year ago to the date, in Bakersfield, Ced was biting at the heels of Ronnie, who has been the Ruler Supreme of this age class since age 7. With multiple World Championships and even more NAG No.1 plates, Kim is, and always will be, the one to beat. It’s been nearly one year since Ronnie’s longstanding win-streak was stopped in Las Vegas, and Cedric has been workin’ hard at beating Ronnie flat-out ...and more frequently. Just a week prior to the Carolina’s, they’d divided up the wins in Phoenix with Cedric = 2, Ronnie = 1. On Sunday in Arizona, Cedric had watched 14x from the sidelines after crashin’ out in the semi. In Rock Hill, he wasn’t about let that happen again. Ever. These two weren’t about to take a break in this

three 3-Day Nationals in a row streak - and both had come to Rock Hill to let the rivalry continue. Only this time, the tables turned, as Ronnie found himself in the very unusual spot of 5th-in-the-semi on Friday. In an ultrarare moment, Ronnie was the one watching the main from the sidelines something he hasn’t done for quite some time. Cedric, who is being trained by Ronnie’s former trainer - Richie Anderson - along with taking tips from Tuni and Makieva Hopson, has perfected his starts consistently, compared to Ronnie - who suddenly seems to be struggling with getting a killer snap. Not only that, but Cade’s second and third cranks are becoming more powerful, thanks in part to his unique form of trampoline training. It also appears that Cedric is now in Ronnie’s

head, and Kim needs to get back in that “unbeatable mindset” that he’s had for the past seven or eight years. For the first time in his BMX career, the Box factory superstar is experiencing the “slump” that all great athletes get into, from time to time. For both Saturday & Sunday, Cedric beat Ronnie - flat out, fair ‘n square. Final score for this weekend: Cedric = 3, Ronnie = 0 ...which boosts PULL Magazine

BALANCE BIKES At the more than 300-plus BMX tracks all across North America, balance bike riders from two to five years-old have been racing their hearts out.

During the months of April and May, we ran a “Family Track Modeling Contest”. Locally, tracks voted on their “top track” to compete head to head against other winning designs from around the country.

USA BMX members, USA BMX staff, track operators and partners from within the cycling industry cast their votes using a scale of 1 to 5, based on the criteria outlined at the beginning of the contest. All judges were asked to vote on the tracks that followed the guidelines rather than which tracks they liked best. When the dust settled, here were the podium results. Congratulations to our winners!

FRIENDSHIPS AND FUN TIMES If you were to name one group of BMXers who know how to race hard yet still have a fun time - you might be surprised to discover that it’s the Ladies of BMX - not the Pros. In Rock Hill, a number of women racers gathered at the track long after everybody had gone back to their hotels, their bikes equipped with baskets, to get in a sunset photoshoot with James Pennucci. Some of the local camper kids busted out their mini-ramp in the parking lot and the ladies couldn’t resist hitting it for Jim’s camera. Thanks to BMX, there is a lifetime of friendship formed between all racers, but we suspect that the women racers know how to have a bit more fun once the racing has stopped. Photos by: Pennucci

FIVESEVENFIVEBMX Deming, New Mexico. Where in New Mexico? As you’re zipping down the 10 freeway from Arizona to Texas you pass thru Luna County and the City of Deming which is located in the Southwestern part of New Mexico, 33 miles North of the Mexico border. That is most likely the first note on record with USA BMX as we tried to describe the perfect spot to compliment BMX in the El Paso and Las Cruces area. While you may be thinking this is the first BMX venture for the City

136

USABMX.COM H VOL. 10 / ISS. 4

of Deming – it is not. In the 1990’s there was Crossroads BMX track where track operator James Baca raced at the age of 14. Twenty-one years’ prior to James reopening the track, local bike shop owner Bill Beach teamed with the Deming Optimist Club to open Deming Crossroads BMX Park located at Poplar Street and Grand Avenue on Deming’s west side. USA BMX first met James in Arizona for his track operator training and instantly knew the enthusiasm

would fit perfectly as a track operator. That first weekend of training had AJ Segarra sitting by his side and USA BMX knew this was the perfect package for opening the third track in the state. It’s refreshing to know that all three tracks share the passion for BMX in New Mexico. James Baca, and a handful of parents and volunteers, made a difference in the revitalization of BMX racing in Deming, NM. The once abandoned track has seen

the resurgence from a new generation of riders and renewed interest in the sport. With the help from City of Deming officials, local business and families, Deming BMX riders were able to open the 575 BMX track where the former Crossroads BMX track once flourished. Next time you’re running the I-10

freeway between Texas and Arizona and looking for BMX, stop into 575 BMX. We know that James and crew had a mission for the revival of BMX racing in Deming and while that has been accomplished we know there is a huge program in the future for BMX in Southern New Mexico and can’t wait to watch it grow! USA BMX would like to

thank James, Todd Fisher and AJ Segarra as well as the rest of the 575 BMX families for their help. 575 BMX would like to thank the city of Deming, County of Luna and all the local businesses that believed in the program and provided outstanding financial and material support.

USA BMX is pleased to announce that they’ve awarded $52,300 in Bob Warnicke Scholarships to deserving students and their families. Funds are raised annually through the Warnicke Scholarship Race series which assists students and their families in meeting the costs of undergraduate college education, trade school, and other educational avenues they would like to pursue. Awards ranged from $500 to $3,000. USA BMX and BMX Canada members who have a current membership or Track Operators/Officials who participate in BMX racing are eligible to apply. Since 2013, more than $408,800 has been awarded. “During this Covid-19 pandemic, it makes USA BMX even more proud of our tracks and incredibly appreciative of our private donors who make this possible to continue this great tradition of assisting in future education,” said USA BMX president B.A. Anderson. The USA BMX Foundation has created an endowment for the Bob Warnicke Memorial Scholarship Fund. Each year money raised through the Warnicke Scholarship races is placed into the endowment. Donations to the 501(c)3 are always appreciated and are utilized for the scholarship fund. For more information on a Bob Warnicke Scholarship Race near you, visit usabmx.com.

Brian Lewis Replica

Scott was not alone with that sentiment. From that very first issue, published in December of 1976 / January 1977, Bicycle Motocross Action set the standard for all BMX fanatics. And on the cover of that issue, was a SoCal jammer named Brian Lewis, aboard his sponsor’s TwoWheeler’s Super Stroker. The frame and fork of the Stroker was unique - made with square tubing throughout, except for the rectangular top tube.
