They say you haven’t lived until you’ve had a tiny baby goat standing on your back while you practice basic yoga poses… Well, I am here to tell you that I HAVE LIVED! Cross another bucket list item off for me, folks. Goat yoga achievement: unlocked. On a lovely and warm sunny day in June, I had the pleasure of taking a goat yoga class at BIG Cork Vineyards, just over the Frederick County line in Rohrersville. The winery is a gorgeous, peaceful spot no matter the occasion. And so I knew it would be a great place to try out one of the hottest trends of the year – goat yoga. The class was offered by Goat To Be Zen Yoga (@goattobezen) and featured a gaggle of cute baby goats who happily munched on grass as we humans practiced our table poses. Once everyone got his/her fill of yoga poses and goat snuggles, we were treated to a glass of wine as well. Goats + yoga + wine = an amazing way to spend a Saturday morning. Highly recommended. Get a Clue! Escape room creator has major attention to detail By Ty Unglebower

Most people wouldn’t notice it, admits Steven Winder, proprietor of Clue IQ, an escape room experience in Downtown Frederick. “I doubt anyone would have any idea.” Nonetheless, the large custom-made gate in Clue IQ’s Ex Caliber room is his favorite feature on the premises. To most, it’s just a gate to cooler things, but not to Steven. For him, it’s a prime

Steven created Clue IQ in Frederick in the summer of 2016, after having played at other escape rooms in other towns. He loved the concept of combining mysterious stories and puzzle games in an interactive experience, and wanted to bring it to Frederick. (Steven’s family owns several businesses throughout Downtown Frederick, including Frederick Fudge and Ice Cream, Frederick Coffee Company, Pasta Palette, Shab Row Tea Emporium and Good Juju.) Clue IQ is located in an old dry goods grocer warehouse on South Carroll Street. Steven and his family completely renovated the space and custom-built each room, focusing a lot on production quality and level of detail. At Clue IQ it’s all about having fun. You’re not actually locked into a room with no escape, and it goes beyond simply trying to get out the door. You’ll experience a fully immersive adventure and work to uncover clues and solve puzzles in order to complete your mission. Each room/game has a different theme and is designed to be challenging for adults, though kids are welcome to play, too. If guests don’t notice the construction aspects of each room, it is a sign of success to Steven. Total immersion in the hour-long game is his goal in pursuit of the ultimate mission: fun. For Steven, that means making sure each of respective settings. There must be an authenticity that he feels is sorely lacking in many of the escape rooms he has visited across the country.

In Ex Caliber, it isn’t just that gate, it’s also the metal sword itself. And in Blitzkrieg, proper metal bars in the prison cell setting were also custom made for the 100-plus-year-old building. It’s also the period-appropriate computer screens and light fixtures, carpets and furniture filling the spyoriented Conspiracy room. Nearly everything one sees and interacts with in the three rooms at Clue IQ was specifically chosen for its authentic look and feel. Items that could not be found were manufactured specifically for use in the escape rooms, either in-house or by local artisans in metal works and fabrication, leather craft, painting, masonry and other types of high craftsmanship. There is, in fact, only one major aspect of one of the sets that was not made specifically for the folks at Clue IQ and their visitors. (I don’t feel it would be as fun if I were to reveal here which component I’m referring to, so you will have to visit and see if you can guess what I am talking about!)

The careful selection and construction of props and decorations is no mere passing fad, either. During our conversation, Steven emphasized, “giving that sense of authenticity” as the most important concept several times. A connoisseur of escape rooms all over the country, he feels that far too many look “like an office, with something from Party City” hanging on walls and doors to merely suggest a location. Clue IQ isn’t satisfied with mere suggestion. And it shows. Ex Caliber, as one may expect, is an adventure involving the mythical sword of Arthurian legend. Clue IQ game players find the sword actually lodged into a stone, released only when proper steps are followed. Beautifully painted windows call to mind medieval stained glass, each illuminated from behind, giving a simultaneous aura of holiness and magic. Blitzkrieg takes place during World War II, and is set in a realistic prison cell of that time. The bars, the period posters and pamphlets adorning the partially crumbling walls, the true brick of the building’s structure all blend seamlessly into the narrative: a sense of grunge and risk and danger. A convincing hand grenade sits on a desk in this adventure. (Anywhere else, and I might have been concerned to come across it.) In Conspiracy, we have computers and phones, discovered, bulletin boards with pertinent information and typical fluorescent lighting so common in many offices. An agent in black smoking a cigarette could have walked in, and not looked at all out of place here.

I found it theatrical as one might expect and had to wonder if Steven had a background in set-building for stage or possibly television. “Not at all,” he told me, much to my surprise. “I studied economics.” The economic outlook of Clue IQ continues to shine, as it remains one of the most popular escape room venues in Maryland. The appeal of such places (beyond terrific sets), according to Steven, is a sense of accomplishment when winning the puzzle, and an ideal way to meet new people or team build with co-workers in a nonconventional place. “We’ll help out…” by giving a hint, Steven told me. It all depends on what the visitors need to enjoy themselves. He has no use for rooms and games that are so difficult nobody ever solves them: “Where’s the fun in that?” The real fun is in the details at Clue IQ.

Freesia and Vine Flowers — aka FAV Flowers — is an inspiring place. The shop smells like a lush flower garden, and the space is filled with blossoms of all colors, sizes and textures, artfully arranged. Owners Jackie Gambill and Liz Gillison have worked out of the space on West Patrick Street in Downtown Frederick for about one year and opened its doors to the public this spring. Jackie and Liz are truly artists, masters of their craft, making unique and creative arrangements for all occasions — weddings, proms, birthdays and other special events. They encourage imagination and creativity, seeking out flowers to make each bouquet meaningful to the person it’s meant to celebrate. The shop is located inside a gorgeous historic building with exposed brick and log-cabin-style walls. Liz and Jackie have added their own accents, creating a very stylized and charming little shop. It’s not terribly large, but it feels like a wonderland that you could get lost in, among the tantalizing scents and picturesque displays that are Instagram-worthy. Breathe in, hold the table pose and breathe out for 3 … 2 … 1 … then a precious baby goat jumps on your back. Its little hooves feel like a gentle massage as it putters around, then jumps down to join its brothers and sisters munching on the grass around you.

Under the shade of a sycamore tree on a beautiful farm or in the afternoon sun at a winery — life doesn’t get much more relaxing than stretching out with a herd of precious, mischievous and downright adorable baby goats. Yes, Goat Yoga is a thing and it’s being offered all over Frederick County. Naturally, we had to investigate, so we tried out Goat for the Soul in Union Bridge and attended an event at Big Cork Vineyards in Rohrersville featuring GoatToBeZen Yoga.
IT’S FUN & DIFFERENT We’ve tried a few fitness classes in the past, such as Pilates and pole-dancing, but believe us when we say goat yoga classes are a truly unique experience. Even though it involves more time snuggling goats than holding yoga poses, the classes are very relaxing and an absolute blast. The group we joined were of all different fitness levels and even though some members were more experienced with yoga, and some more with goats, nobody felt out of place. We all giggled and cooed at the young “kids” and everyone at some point found themselves

under a pile of rambunctious (but gentle!) goats. I don’t think we stopped laughing the whole time in the best possible way.

IT’S GOOD FOR YOU What if I told you that goat yoga (or any yoga with animals for that matter) is excellent for your health? Well, it’s true! There are countless benefits to practicing yoga, such as improving your energy level, increasing flexibility, losing weight, reducing blood pressure and even helping with conditions such as back pain, arthritis, headaches and insomnia, all of which stem from yoga’s calming effect on your parasympathetic nervous system. And animal therapy is also a well-established method of healing and treating a variety of conditions, including anxiety, stress, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), cardiovascular disease and fatigue. It’s also been helpful for people receiving cancer treatment or in substance abuse recovery as well. As a generally busy human, I find myself running between activities and work with little time to slow down and be in the moment. Goat yoga was the perfect opportunity to turn my brain off and relax for an afternoon and taking that time out for

OKAY, WHERE CAN I DO THIS? Chomping at the bit to sign up? Don’t worry! The season is gearing up and there is a plethora of events all over Frederick County featuring these fluffy goat babies. Goat for the Soul offers a variety of classes on their gorgeous farm in Union Bridge. To some of them, you can bring an adult beverage as well! While they do raise goats at the farm, they also have horses, pigs, chickens, hens, turkeys, guinea hens, dogs, cats and rabbits. GoatToBeZen also offers classes on their farm, called Prosperity Acres, which is outside of the county, in Sunderland. They raise goats and make soap, shampoo, goat milk ice cream and other goodies you can purchase. Both Goat for the Soul and GoatToBeZen have partnered with wineries, breweries and distilleries in Frederick County and typically will have a package that pairs goat yoga, wine tastings and a tour while you’re on-site. So, am I going to recommend goat yoga to everyone I know? Most definitely! It’s the perfect activity for anyone who loves animals and would like to get outside for the afternoon, and the best

Nothing beats being at the seaside, with that saltwater air that magically unlocks muscle tension, and miles of sand and ocean that seem to put everything in perspective. Frankly, nothing compares to the ocean. But if you don’t want to deal with the traffic to get there, or you don’t have the time or budget for an overnight excursion, several options await you in and around Frederick County for a quick fix, surprisingly relaxing beach trip.

Although Maryland doesn’t have any natural lakes (sad/fun fact), the area does offer several rivers, quarries and manmade lakes against forested mountain backdrops, which provide their own brand of magic. Several sandy beaches exist nearby for all your lounging pleasures. These little gems are particularly convenient when you want to be near a body of water but aren’t up for a hike during a sweltering Maryland heat wave.

Surreybrooke: A Destination Nursery By Lauren LaRocca
When Nancy and Ron Walz bought a farm in Middletown in 1977, the land was bucolic, but far from ideal. Nancy and Ron transformed it into Surreybrooke garden center and nursery, and the site now draws people from counties away who want to find, learn about and buy exotic plants, shrubs and trees for their yards and gardens. Others come to Surreybrooke for workshops and events, such as the popular Make Your Own Succulent Garden workshop or Music in the Garden Twilight Walk. School groups visit to learn about plants at the Children’s Garden. And this summer, the American Public Gardens Association is coming for a tour of the grounds and private gardens, which Nancy is pretty thrilled about.

GROWING HER VISION “I just started with raised beds on the side of the house,” Nancy said, walking through the Surreybrooke grounds on a sunny weekday afternoon. “I just had a little greenhouse and plants up at the house.” Her vision would expand rapidly in the ensuing decades to include multiple gardens (including what she calls her “secret garden”), greenhouses, several benches to relax and take in the environs and an onsite shop for all your garden and potting needs. There’s even a pavilion area now, which is used for parties and receptions. In short, at Surreybrooke, Nancy has created a destination nursery, one that people are willing to drive a little farther for to come see, one where they take their time and spend all afternoon. It’s an enriching place that offers much more than your typical graband-go garden center. Paths wind throughout the property, revealing flowering plants and shrubs and vines around every bend and an entire greenhouse filled with succulents and another filled with flowers. Literally thousands of plants and trees fill the grounds, which are large enough for you to roam around for hours. Curiously, gardening wasn’t something that Nancy learned from either of her parents as a child. Rather, it was something she simply fell in love with and learned by doing, like a mad scientist in the fields. She read a lot of English garden books and began planting things in part so that people could see what they looked like once they were growing. But it’s as if she couldn’t stop, and indeed she continues to grow the garden center, planting new areas each year to expand its

variety of colors, textures and learning opportunities.

As the years passed, she ultimately realized her vision, creating a breathtaking haven for garden lovers and plant enthusiasts throughout the area. Meanwhile, in the process of creating Surreybrooke, she and her husband have saved five historic buildings that are located on the property, including a sweet, little log cabin built in the early 1700s that predates the founding of Middletown. Nancy once used another historic building on the grounds to run a small shop, where she’d make and sell dried floral arrangements, but she has since closed that part of her business.
EXPLORE THE GROUNDS Nancy used to raise trees, so all the trees on the property came from little whips that she planted and kept until they were big enough, usually about seven years or so. Now, many of them loom above, and others form small groves (hint: her “secret garden” is hidden in one such place). Now that the trees afford more shade on the property, Nancy has been able to plant shade-loving plants, such as hostas. Some of the hostas onsite are absolutely massive. The Children’s Garden area includes the Alphabet Garden, with plants running along a long fence, each representing a letter of the alphabet, ending with zinnias (Nancy had to include a few Latin names to make it work). Children and parents, as well as area school groups, come to the garden to deepen their knowledge of the natural world, learning by seeing, smelling and, in some cases, tasting. is a walk-through maze that winds through a tall grove of pine trees. Nancy started creating the Children’s Garden nearly 20 years ago, when her first granddaughter was born.

In another area, a rippling creek cuts through the property and feeds a small pond, which makes for a relaxing view and hangout spot for people — as well as geese (baby geese, too, depending on the time of year). Nancy has planted native species along the creek and has gotten rid of invasive plants, such as honeysuckle and grapevine, to help filter the spring water, which is the source of water for her home on the property and Surreybrooke. Some people come by and just hang out all day, taking in the sun and the lush space. With plenty of tables, benches, chairs and quiet, whimsical spots, it’s easy to lose track of time here. Although Nancy has a coveted commute to work — ambling along this lush environment of trees and flowers — you’ll seldom see her resting. She’s always moving, digging, planting, watering, wheeling a wheelbarrow, hands filled with some variation of plants and mulch and soil. Even when giving a tour of the grounds, she stops to take a phone call from her daughter, Jessi Hollis, who also works at Surreybrooke and has a question for a customer. “That’s not angelica; that’s white valerian,” Nancy tells her. “It totally looks like angelica, but it’s not. If she comes back, I’ll just dig her one.” Nancy hangs up the phone and then gets right back to it. Does she have a favorite plant? No. How could she? For someone so passionate about the world of plants, it would be
