10 money-saving tips for going green
1. Use your window shades to your advantage. Open them up on sunny days to draw warmth, and close them at night to keep your home warm and cozy. 2. Make it a game — get the kids involved by creating an earth drill, where everyone goes around the house turning off unused lights and appliances. Whoever finds the most things to turn off gets to pick what board game to play. 3. Use a programmable thermostat and keep the temperature a few degrees lower in the winter. Reducing the temperature by one degree can cut two to three per cent off heating bills on average. 4. Watch the clock and only run appliances like dishwashers and laundry
5. Make your own DIY cleaning products at home and use reusable rags and old towels when cleaning. 6. Opt for energy-efficient appliances and unplug small appliances and electronics when not in use. 7. Check for drafts and insulate doors, windows and any other areas where you feel cold air coming in. 8. Install a ceiling fan to better circulate warm air throughout the home. 9. About 90 per cent of the energy a washing machine uses goes toward heating the water. Wait until you have a full load of laundry and wash clothes in cold water. 10. Install efficient toilets and shower heads throughout your home to save on water consumption. New low-flow toilets can use six or less litres of water per flush compared to older toilets that use 13 to 20 litres.

PROGRAM AND UTILITY FEES An annual Secondary Suites Program fee of $60 and applicable utility user fees will be applied to the property tax notice.
REGISTER YOUR SECONDARY SUITE All secondary suites in Mission must now be registered with the City. The Secondary Suites Program will help the City of Mission gain greater insight into housing population concentrations. Registrations received before April 2, 2024 will not require inspections. An annual Secondary Suites Program fee of $60 is being collected to support the administration and response to issues related to suites in the community.
Register now at mission.ca/secondary-suites
WHAT IS A SECONDARY SUITE? A secondary suite is a self-contained living space that is located within a single detached home. The existence of a secondary suite is not determined by the payment of rent nor is it negated by occupancy of family members. If an independent residence exists, then a secondary suite exists. A secondary suite is not a coach home or garden cottage.
All homeowners who currently have a secondary suite must register regardless of whether their suite was built with or without the proper permits or approvals. Homeowners registeringafter April 2, 2024 will be subject to suite inspections and required to bring their suite into full BC Building Code and bylaw compliance with the City. The family of Jaswant Singh Wirk is saddened to announce his passing at the age of 96. Raised in Kenya, Jaswant enjoyed a rich and fulfilling life as an accomplished businessman in East Africa. After moving to Canada, he actively participated in the Alberta and BC communities where he lived, whether through his work or his connection to the broader Sikh diaspora. His wisdom and counsel were sought by many across the communities in East Africa and Canada. They always appreciated his patient, practical and thoughtful perspective. In his later years he enjoyed reminiscing about the people and experiences of life in East Africa and his travels. He believed in the power of education and was himself a life-long learner, supporting his siblings in their educational pursuits. He continued to keep his mind and body active well into his later years. Jaswant was pre deceased by his wife Trishan Kaur (née Gill) and his brother Manmohan Singh Wirk. He is survived by his two sons: Manjeet and Daljeet, as well as his two grandsons, Zak and Patrik and great grand daughter Linn. He is also survived by his sister Harwant and brothers Kalwant and Gurcharan and their families. He will be missed by all those whose lives he touched. Tributes are possible at the Fraser River Funeral Home website in Abbotsford.

After the pressure you have likely experienced since the year began, you are now moving into a period to 23rd March where you can work out what needs to become your main priority in life. You could make decisions this week you had not planned but suddenly realise are necessary, based on what you don’t want to do anymore.
New responsibilities could come your way which might be something you have been aiming for in a work situation but this could also take place on a personal level. There could be a lot more to this than is initially presented. Be mindful of what you are prepared to take on from now to late March, so to avoid getting bogged down.
Pressure from the expectations of somebody else that has been upon since the year began will be released, giving you a sense of freedom. This can open up all sorts of new possibilities where the future is concerned, which can include looking at possibilities you could only dream about before. Focus on this to late March.
Any challenges you may have had to deal with from somebody else since the beginning of the year may now become less obvious to 23rd March. Their determination to either do things or have things their way won’t waver. They could just be less open. You will have support elsewhere but keep your wits about you.
New directions can take shape in your life when it comes to other people, either those you know or somebody new. They will be determined when it comes to their own agenda and you need to be careful about the level of commitment or responsibility you take on. Those in business could be very busy to late March.
More pleasurable activities or a desire to relax since the year began will wind up now. Something may have changed as well when it comes to future goals which will now require some proper focus to get organised up to late March. This could also bring changes to your usual routines, which might take a while to get used to.
Be satisfied with whatever you have managed to organise and put in place since the year began. It is time to relax and involve yourself in some pleasurable activities up to 23rd March. The way somebody else deals with their life might be a good example to follow, especially if you realise you have become too serious of late.
From now to 23rd March you could become more certain about what needs to be put in place for ongoing security when it comes to any changes that could have taken place since mid October. This could involve home and family but also any other area of life that is important to you. Focus on this step involving the next 2 years.
There can be a lot to think or communicate about from now to late March which could stem from new information coming your way right now. Be mindful of what you can reasonably manage because something small asked of you could turn out to have a lot more work attached than is obvious. Be across the detail – ask questions.
Your finances come under focus to late March. This would be a good time to make any adjustments to loans but be mindful of not committing yourself to anything that could become difficult to manage later. This could also be favourable for getting a job, changing jobs or receiving an increase in pay. Don’t be tempted to waste it though.
With Mars entering your sign until 23rd March you will begin a new 2 year cycle but this one is like no other you have experienced so far in life. The New Moon has also just taken place in your sign, so it is all about new beginnings. For some this may mean beginning to alter your attitude to things that can’t be changed, which oddly enough could make you feel a new person.
You will need a lot of patience to 23rd March, especially with any situations that seem out of your control. More information might be needed so that you can eventually move forward without hindrance. A possible new direction may begin to develop but exactly how that will play out could take a month to fully emerge.
