When The Bad News Becomes ALL News

H

ey, did you hear there’s a pandemic going on? The answer is, obviously, yes. Given the daily government announcements, the focus on death rates, the neverending arguments about what we should be doing to flatten the curve, the almost competitive comparison of one region vs the other. And that’s just the media and government sources. Then you get bombarded by the conflicting opinions of friends and family. Those who tell you “it’s no big deal, get on with your life” while others you trust are saying “take this seriously and lock yourself down.” The situation has got to the point of overwhelm for many. Emotions swing from fearful to elated depending on that hour’s latest story. People are feeling confused, tired, sleepless due to this never-ending stress inducement. The high rates of stress combined with the lack of great sleep increases the body’s stress response even further. These Are Important Days Sure, there are days when the feelings can get so overwhelming that the bad news spiral takes over. It can feel like 'the world' has turned against you and nothing goes right. The days you feel this way can become major positive turning points in your life, if you allow them to be. When you allow 'negative momentum' to grow during your day, like a snowball rolling down a hill, it accumulates more anger, pain, victimhood and frustration. As the momentum grows it’s as if you become a magnet for all that is wrong. You see wrong, pain, hurt, everywhere and in every situation. You’re quicker to anger, quick to complain, quicker to judge

We can all begin by being present and aware to the good in your world. Forcing ourselves to battle against the negative tide is not easy and you may not be successful at it everyday, that’s OK. Keep working at it. You’re fighting a big force, so it will take some effort, but winning this battle can be life changing.

Are you there, happiness? Or are you hidden around the next bend? For many the belief is that happiness is just ahead around the bend. The feeling of happiness being just out of reach gives us an excuse to be unhappy, angry, and negative. People with that future happiness mindset miss out on being present to the large and small moments of happiness they can create right now in mid pandemic. In fact it is a great time: To be present to your habits and thoughts with the goal of managing them in a healthy manner. To be thankful for what you have, and hopeful for what may come. While remaining realistic about the ups and downs of the journey ahead. To break old habits that no longer serve you well and replace them with new ones. Start today and proceed one day at a time. Please beware of destination addiction which is defined as a preoccupation with the idea that happiness is the next place, the next job, the next year. Until you release the idea that happiness is somewhere else it will never fully arrive where you currently are. Be Well, Be Safe, Be Compassionate

Statement from MPs Brad Vis and Ed Fast Regarding Mission Institution COVID-19 Outbreak Mission, BC – The Correctional Service of Canada today confirmed that on Wednesday, April 15, 2020, an inmate of the medium security Mission Institution passed away at Abbotsford Regional Hospital from complications arising from COVID-19. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victim and their family. As of April 15, 54 inmates have tested positive for COVID-19, with six test results pending. Six correctional officers have also tested positive. For two weeks now the medium security facility at Mission Institution has been subject to the worst COVID-19 outbreak of any Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) institution in the country. Unfortunately, proactive communication to our community from CSC has been and continues to be absent. The public is understandably concerned about measures being

TRAVEL

taken to arrest the spread of the virus within the prison population, amongst frontline correctional officers, and in the wider community. It is incumbent upon our federal institutions to keep the public informed. We call on the Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, Bill Blair, to discharge his ministerial responsibility to do so. His statement today indicating that “we continue to look at options to see what further measures can be taken” is wholly insufficient. The public is currently unaware of what measures have been taken to protect inmates, correctional officers and the general public. This is largely due to the failure of his Ministry to communicate those measures and to assure the community that every necessary step is being taken to uphold public safety.

The Komagata Maru Affair

his racial discrimination by white supremacists which was condoned by the British imperial government not only created an inner sense of anger and frustration among the Indian immigrants, but also more importantly, as stated by Gobind Behari Lal, convinced them that only free people from a free country could command respect in other countries. As aptly stated by Sukhdeep Bhoi, “Injustices and unfair practices of the Canadian government against the Indian immigrants, built up a reservoir of discontent, ill-will and hatred which erupted into Ghadar. The Sikhs, particularly the ex-soldiers who had fought battles for their British masters, found it hard to believe that as British subjects of proven and heroic loyalty to the British Empire they were targeted for exclusion from Canada which formed part of the

British Commonwealth. As stated by Harold A. Gould, the Sikhs as British subjects were entitled to “emigrate wherever they wished within the Commonwealth without being discriminated against on the basis of race, religion, or ethnicity. What further angered the Sikh immigrants was that the British consular authorities in Canada and USA refused (unlike the Japanese and the Chinese authorities who protected the rights of their citizens and resisted efforts to pass exclusion laws) to assist them in protecting their rights as British subjects. The Canadian government paid extensive reparations to both the Chinese ($26, 990) anf Japanese ($9, 175) for damages suffered during the 1907 Vancouver racial riots. In the words of Sohan Singh Bhakna, such indifference on the part of British authorities “left deep scars on the minds of Indian workers. Both the

Gharib Singh, a committee member of the gurdwara who had served with distinction in the Boxer Rebellion in China with the 14th Sikh Regiment, took off his medal to demonstrate immediate supoprt for the resolutio. Later in the same year, Bagh Singh, a five-year veteran of the Tenth Bengal Lancer Regiment, burned his honourable discharge certificate in a bonfire “to make the point that service such as he had given in the British Indian On 3 October 1909, Natha Singh prearmy was the service of slavery. sented a resolution to the Sikh congregation in the Vancouver gurdwara The Indians had formed two assoto the following effect: “Resolved that ciations, the Khalsa Diwan Society no member of the Executive Commit- (1906) and the United India League tee of the Sikh Temple should wear (1911), to fight against racial disany kinds of medals, buttons, uni- crimination in Canada. British government and the Government of India actually conspired with the Canadian government to put an end to Indian immigration to Canada. The British government in India was worries that “a resident Indian community in British Columbia might easily become a centre of Indian nationalism. According to A.C. Bose, “It was this callous, nay almost treacherous, attitude [of the Government of India as well as the British government] that gradually turned the increasing bitterness of these unfortunate immigrants against their alien government at home.

Emergency supports for home share, support service providers Provincial emergency COVID-19 funding will be distributed through Community Living BC (CLBC) to ensure people with developmental disabilities stay supported and safe during the pandemic. As part of the B.C. Government’s $5-billion COVID-19 Action Plan, up to $35.6 million will be available over three months from CLBC to support service providers to continue delivering residential services, including group homes, home sharing and supported independent living that about 9,500 adults with developmental disabilities count on.

“This pandemic has had a significant impact on agencies and home-sharing providers who perform essential care and services, creating challenges for people with developmental disabilities and their families,” said Shane Simpson, Minister of Social Development and Poverty Reduction. “This funding will ensure that quality of care and staffing levels are maintained so that the people who depend on these services remain safe and supported.”

help of agency-supported living services have also been identified as vulnerable during the COVID-19 pandemic. Emergency funding will support service providers to adjust and continue supports to keep these people safe. Many home-sharing providers are taking on extra caregiving requirements. This is because of the need to follow health guidelines, the disruption to services, such as community inclusion or day programs, and difficulty in acquiring resources that people usually access in their communities. These home-sharing providers will be able to apply for temporary additional funding to ensure people under their care remain supported. In some cases, these residential services are managed through individualized funding arrangements or person-centred societies, rather than service providers. They will also be able to access emergency funding to maintain residential services. As well, the Province has provided $125,000 to VELA Microboard Association of B.C. to enhance its Support Worker Central web platform. Microboards are small groups of family and friends (a minimum of five people) who create a non-profit society to support adults with developmental disabilities. This is an online database designed to match individuals, families and agencies with support workers in their communities.

Under this temporary emergency support, CLBC service providers who provide residential services, such as group homes, can request funding to address overtime costs or staffing shortages and to access additional supplies for delivering disabilityCLBC will work with agencies and related supports to keep individuals launch the process to request funding safe. on April 27, 2020. Commercial transport industry consulted on potential regulation updates The B.C. government invites commercial vehicle drivers, owners and owner/operators in the industry to provide input on proposed changes to modernize safety regulations for commercial vehicles. The Province is proposing changes to Division 37 - Safety Code of the Motor Vehicle Act Regulations to improve road safety: As of June 12, 2021, commercial vehicles that cross provincial borders will be required to be equipped with an electronic logging device (ELD). In response to these changes to the federal Commercial Vehicle Drivers Hours of Service Regulations, B.C. is looking for industry input to help determine what the requirements will be for commercial vehicles operating within the province. National Safety Code (NSC) Standard 13 - Trip Inspections has not yet been adopted by B.C. Currently, under Part 4 of Division 37, many B.C. drivers and carriers are already required to complete trip inspection reports and use pre-printed or electronic reports that mirror the requirements of NSC Standard 13. The adoption of NSC Standard 13 would harmonize B.C. with the rest of Canada and provide clarity for commercial vehicle operators in the province. At the same time, the Province is also seeking industry feedback to inform a decision on mandating the use of speed limiters for commercial vehicles already subject to hours of service. The adoption of speed limiters in B.C. can have benefits, including improvements to safety, fuel savings and a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. Quebec and Ontario enacted speed limiter laws over a decade ago. Recent analysis by the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure has shown the effect on travel times by a lowered travel speed on highways posted over 110 km/h is likely to be minimal, between one to 13 minutes per corridor.

Social media detox for Parineeti Chopra! Parineeti Chopra is one of the few B-Town stars who is not posting her stayat-home exploits like her colleagues, who have been sharing videos of them exercising, baking, cooking, washing utensils, doing the laundry, applying sheet masks and dressing up for the living room. Now, Pari is logging off from social media as well. "Gonna take a much-needed detox from social media for a few days. Some me-time is needed and important. See you all on the other side (sic)," the actor wrote. She is keen on self-isolating to pause and reflect. Speaking of her professional journey, Parineeti Chopra will be next seen in the Hindi remake of The Girl On The Train, also starring Aditi Rao Hydari and Sandeep Aur Pinky Faraar. Dibakar Banerjee's film, Sandeep Aur Pinky Faraar was originally slated for 2018 and later pushed to 2019. The makers announced on March 3 that the film was ready for release. Now, however, the film has been further pushed. The Girl On The Train remake, which is yet to be titled shares the story about a woman who witnesses a murder and embarks on a mission to solve the mystery behind what exactly happened. The Hollywood film was a very successful thriller, and the Bollywood version seems as exciting.

Had my share of tears and self-doubt : Ayushmann Khurrana Even though the nepotism debate has gained credence in Bollywood, Ayushmann Khurrana's success story proves that talent doesn't go unrewarded. "I'm grateful to the industry for welcoming me with open arms," says the actor, who completes eight years in the industry today. From playing a sperm donor in his debut vehicle Vicky Donor (2012) to tackling caste divide in Article 15 (2019) and bringing a same-sex love story to the big screen with Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan, Khurrana has shown that films can go beyond their three-hour runtime to effect social change. "The journey wasn't easy, I had my share of tears and moments of self-doubt. [The credit goes to] the visionary filmmakers who made me a part of their stories," he reflects. ' On the cards is a reunion with director Anubhav Sinha for an action thriller even as he looks forward to the release of Gulabo Sitabo. Khurrana acknowledges that the spate of successful films has brought as much responsibility as joy.

Love is the most unifying emotion : Arjun Kapoor The romantic drama "2 States", starring Alia Bhatt and Arjun Kapoor was released six years ago on April 18 and highlighted the feel-good romance of a Punjabi boy and a Tamil girl. Arjun spoke to real-life couples who were culturally opposite and yet found common ground in love, noting that love was the most unifying emotion. "2 States is and will always be one of the most special films of my life and on its sixth anniversary, I'm trying to do something really special. For me, love is the most unifying emotion and it transcends all barriers. I will be highlighting some really special, real life love stories on my social media," Arjun said."2 States", an adaptation of Chetan Bhagat's bestseller novel of the same name, was directed by Abhishek Varman."I will be speaking to some couples who come from poles apart from cultural backgrounds but have

found their pure love to be the perfect glue between them and their contrasting families. These couples truly highlight the spirit of our film's core messaging - 2 states, One love and I can't wait to speak to them and tell you all more about their fantastic love stories!" Arjun said.

Sushmita Sen beats me all the time, I am a very good boyfriend : Rohman Shawl Rohman Shawl and Sushmita Sen have been dating each other for a very long time. We have said this before and we say this again that the actress is one of those very few names that has always believed in living her life the way she has wanted and been totally unapologetic about it. Be it her films, or her decision to adopt, or even her relationships, she has never hidden anything from anyone and stood by what she has done. And now, in an interview , we got to see the funny side of her and her beau, Rohman. Speaking about the actress, Rohman said, "Okay, I will just sort this out for once. She is the best, she beats me every time and I am a very good boyfriend. She's really good... I have taught her, but she beats me all the time." And what followed next was a collective laugher. She added, "That's true, he taught me chess, and I beat him also." Rohman continued and stated, "No, she is not an overachiever. She is someone who learned chess and she told him you will defeat me a hundred times and then, you will find it difficult to win once in a hundred times and I have done that."

The praise that comes my way is dangerous for my Iman : Zaira Wasim In 2016, Bollywood got a stellar performer in the form of Zaira Wasim in Nitesh Tiwari's Dangal. And with Secret Superstar and The Sky Is Pink, she proved to be a force to reckon with at a tender age. But she quit acting as she felt it was a hindrance to her religion. Despite mixed reactions, she stood by her decision and people respected her for that. And now, she has posted another statement on her social media account and asked us not to praise her since all these appreciations are dangerous for her Iman. She wrote-"While I acknowledge with humility all the love people shower me with, I cannot emphasise enough how the praise that comes my way isn't gratifying at all for me and how big of a test it is for me and how dangerous it is

for my Iman. I'm not as righteous as I might lead many to believe.” (sic)She added, "Instead, I urge everyone to not praise me in any manner but pray that Allah overlooks my shortcomings, which are too many to count, and fills the void in my heart with the light of His Mercy, Taqwa and increases me in Iman, rectifies my intentions and grants me knowledge that is beneficial and a heart and tongue that remembers Him at all times and turns to Him often in repentance, and allow me to perform righteous deeds only for His sake, allow me to remain steadfast and cause me to live and die as a Muslim (wholly submitting to Him) Jazakum Allahu Khayran. Regards.”

Well-cared-for green spaces in urban centres reduce vandalism, increase property value and boost both physical and mental health for those who visit them. “There are many, many benefits to green spaces in urban areas,” says Karen Stephenson, director of regulatory affairs and stakeholder relations at Scotts Canada Ltd, a global leader in the lawn-care industry. “Healthy green spaces are not only a spot for recreation and social activities in our communities — they also help protect the environment around us.” Urban green spaces contribute positively to the local environment by filtering rainwater and capturing pollutants in the air. Whether used for agriculture or urban lawns, pesticides are rigorously tested. Both synthetic and natural pesticides must meet the same high standards of health and environmental safety protection and must be approved by Health Canada. “Canada has some of the best regulation and legislation related to the evaluation of pesticides,” says Stephenson. “Many regulatory agencies around the world are taking a very close look at pesticide products to ensure that they are safe for use. There’s a lot of science to support the safety of these products.”

Getting frustrated at limitations you need to deal with will be of no help. Be careful this does not encourage you to spend money on impulse. This would normally be a socially busy time for you where celebrations abound. Instead you should take the opportunity to complete any unfinished jobs or let something go, once and for all.

It will be easy for you to recognise any areas where you have become too much of a slave to the needs of others. This may have gone on for a long time. It is now that you should take action to change this. What has been a significant change in you is that you are unlikely to find yourself worrying about how you will be thought of.

Venus, the planet of social activity and pleasure now in your sign is being put under pressure that inhibits the usual ability to simply enjoy yourself. Other priorities are overtaking this ability. Future possibilities will seem difficult to pursue. On the positive side this can encourage you to narrow down and even drop some goals.

Somebody’s expectations of you could be in conflict with important priorities to you. If they have authority in some way or think they do you may need to hide exactly how you feel until you can get support from those who realise this needs to come to an end. They may be in a better position to be able to argue the point.

If there is something you are not quite sure about you should search out more information, which could result in some unexpected realisations. It will be difficult to plan social activities for the future but this won’t last forever. You can make a lot of progress with little jobs you have left unattended. Get them out of the way.

You can enjoy getting something out of the way that has perhaps had ups and downs or followed an unpredictable path since early February. On the positive side this has possibly given you more insight into somebody else. Developing greater strength when it comes to doing too much for others can only be of benefit.

The Full Moon this week falls into your sign giving you the opportunity to fully realise something about yourself, which can include what is most important to you. Some tension could arise with someone else related to what you believe is the most balanced way to pursue something into the future. Don’t give up because of it.

There can be a lot building up behind the scenes, which is not obvious. Don’t allow a rebellious attitude or behaviour from somebody else to disrupt what you have been working on putting into place. The more certain you are about your ideas or information you have sought out, the more determined you should be to follow it.

There can be disappointments with social activities and people you were planning to catch up with. It will provide the opportunity to do something that you have wanted to do but haven’t found the time. This does not include work on more routine matters though. It could be searching out information, even reading a book.

Try not to worry too much about finances. Most important is not to spend money on things you don’t really need. You are blessed with natural discipline and self control that you can call up when required. Best to find new daily pleasures to replace those that might cost too much right now or simply can’t be fulfilled.

You could be unmovable when it comes to anything that you feel will affect you personally. Where someone might have thought you were flexible they may be in for a shock when they discover you can have a stubborn streak when pushed too far. You could be disappointed about a social event you were looking forward to.

You sense that you are on the verge of moving on in some way after all sorts of twists and turns since early February. With this can come a realisation that you need to consider other things that should eventually be wound up in preparation for a new 2 year cycle that will begin for you in mid May. There is no rush right now.

Education assistants find new ways to help students B.C. students, families and educators are adjusting to a different school life environment during the COVID-19 pandemic. Most students are learning at home. But some children with diverse abilities and students whose parents are essential service workers have greater needs.

Lund, a support teacher at D.P. Todd, “and that we are supporting teachers to ensure that their continuity of learning is accessible and inclusive to all of our learners.”

Parents of students with complex needs have always known the important connection their children have with their EAs. But in these challenging times, staying in contact with EAs For B.C.’s education assistants (EAs), is proving to be invaluable to help the COVID-19 measures have comstudents continue their learning and pelled them to find creative and comestablish routines. passionate ways to support students either remotely or in person. At D.P. Todd Secondary school in Prince George, education assistants are connecting with students, many of whom have diverse needs and abilities. They connect through online group chats and social-emotional check-ins. The EAs support students’ learning, including reading to them over the phone. “A lot of our students rely on these check-ins,” said Caroline Parker, an EA at D.P. Todd. “When we are in class, you can see their body language change when they've had an opportunity to share what was on their mind, either by being extremely proud of an accomplishment or just letting go of a little bit of stress. This is still even more important today to maintain. They need to know that while so many doors of opportunity are closed right now due to social distancing, that we are still here and do care.” EAs at D.P. Todd are also connecting with classroom teachers to support them in making content more accessible for students who may need an extra layer of support as they learn from home. This might mean recording videos of teachers reading a short story or breaking down a math problem. “Our goal is to make sure that all students who were receiving support in the classroom continue to have access to support virtually,” said Rebecca PAGE 34
