2024 Lexus RZ 450 – the Lexus brand first All-Electric SUV Shines!

Lexus now has its first All- electric SUV, namely the Lexus — RZ 450e. Sharing a platform with Toyota’s BZ4X, the RX is great and much needed addition to the Lexus lineup. In terms of design, there is the signature Lexus spindle-faux grille, a sleek floating roof design, flowing to a neat reat aero trunk lid. A cool rear light bar closes up the styling. Introduced in 2023 , there are few changes for 2024, but do include introduced For 2024, the RZ offers some options mono and bi-tone exterior paint designs, and minor interior styling changes.

The Lexus RZ is offered in three trims. The RZ 450e starts with the Signature at $64,900, Luxury at $74,150 and the range-topping Executive at $81,050. If you opt for the Signature trim with 18-inch wheels, range clocks in at up to 354 km on a full charge. However, if you opt for the top-trim as tested you gain 20-inch wheels,

Freight and PDI is $2,205

The Signature trim highlights include wireless charging, Lexus Safety System+ 3.0, a 10-speaker audio system run through their 14-inch touchscreen infotainment system, heated NuLuxe seats, a heated tilt and telescopic steering wheel, and full LED exterior lights.

The 450e is powered by a 71.4 kWh battery that juices two electric motors. The front motor twists out 201 hp; the rear-mounted motor chips in with another 107 hp. The combination delivers a net system output of 308 hp and a run from rest to 100 km/h in 5.3 seconds. One of the RZ’s keys is the DIRECT4 system. It’s a clever extension that uses the two electric motors and all-wheel-drive ability to control pitch and roll. In short, it improves the handling by a large margin. Also, it can flip torque splits between 100:0 and 0:100 front: rear – pretty impressive and useful in our Canadian climates.

It has a driving range of up to 354-km. Charging on a Level 2 charger will take between 9.5 and 11 hours for a full charge. A Level 3 charger, the RZ will charge at up to 150 kw and charge up to 80% in 30 minutes.

the optional Luxury Package box and some of what you’ll get is a panoramic moonroof, 360º camera, cooled front seats, decorated instrument panel, and a radiant front knee heater.

The top Executive trim highlights include a 13-speaker Mark Levinson audio system, 64-colour ambient interior lights, acoustic glass, the advanced touch steering wheel (and a head-up display. 2024 Lexus RZ Canadian Pricing

Interior wise - Interior wise No glovebox Lexus opted to give the front passenger extra leg room occupants to use the decent -sized centre console and or the pass-through storage beneath the gear selector. The

highlight is the large 14-inch touchscreen looks after all multimedia functions including wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The clever touches include a home button, which makes life so much easier, and real knobs for the volume and the climate controls.

The optional Mark Levinson sound system is, in a word, superb! The RZ has generous dimensions in all areas. The rear seat delivers 952-mm of legroom; the trunk, says Lexus, has 966L with the seats up, which is massive

On the road, the Lexus RZ is exceptionally smooth, refined and extremely comfortable. Lexus has some of the best driving dynamics in the luxury world and their first electric offering is impressive. It sails over bumps with minimal feeling for passengers, acceleration is respectably brisk given that it’s got instant torque. Although its 320 lb-ft of torque may not sound as impressive as many other luxury

EVs, you’ll still be able to overtake with ease, even considering its curb weight is 4,618 pounds.

Despite its taller stance, cornering and handling score well here, thanks in part to the Direct4 system. There are also five drive modes; Eco, Normal, Sport, Range and Custom, with Range capping your speed at 100 km/h, only using the front motor and eliminating the A/C function. There are, however, four levels of regenerative braking controlled by paddle shifters.

the RZ 450e Executive trim’s range of 315 km is simply too low. If Lexus can get their range closer to the 400km mark, becomes more enticing.

The Lexus RZ 450e wearing 18-inch wheels has a posted average economy of 2.2 Le/100 km and an annual cost of $627. Move up to the RZ with 20-inch wheels and the economy and annual cost rise to 2.5 Le/100 km and $717, respectively.

British Columbia’s election is in full swing. The three main political parties- NDP, Conservative and Green are very active in presenting their respective programs and policies to the electorate. On behalf of Punjabi Language Education Association (PLEA), I would like to bring to the attention of these parties ,their candidates and their leaders some issues relating to Punjabi language in this province. Currently in B.C., close to 2 million Punjabi speakers call Canada their home. Punjabi language is now the third most spoken language both in Canada, in cities like Brampton, Edmonton, Calgary and Metro Vancouver. Punjabi was recognized as one of several second languages to be available in BC’s public schools. As things stand now, students in B.C.’s public schools are required to take one of six recognized second languages from grades 5 to 8 . It is optional from grades 9 to 12. Punjabi is one of these recognized languages.

PLEA would like to request that the second language requirement for our students should be changed from the existing requirement of grades 5 to 8 as compulsory requirement to grades 4 to 7 as compulsory and grades 8 to 12 as optional. For Middle schools, it should be compulsory from grades 6 to 8 and optional from grades 9 to 12. Our reason for this is that in our current school system there is a natural break from Primary to Intermediate grades- Kindergarten to grade to 3 being Primary and grades 4 to 7 being Intermediate. As such, it should be made compulsory from grades 4 to 7 and optional from grades 8 to 12.. However, for the Middle Schools, it will make sense to have it compulsory from grades 6 to 8 and optional from grades 9 to 12.

Furthermore, PLEA requests that as Punjabi is the third most spoken language,

the provincial government and the local school districts should have appropriate messaging and information available to parents about the availability of Punjabi as second language in our public schools. Also, the province should ask the post secondary institutions to include teaching of Punjabi as a second language in B.C.’s public schools as part of the teacher training programs in their universities. In addition to that, the school districts and the province should assist with professional development opportunities for teachers of Punjabi language. In certain schools/ school districts, it may be difficult to have enough students or qualified teachers. As such, providing online Punjabi classes throughout the province should be given careful consideration and support.

In some of the Metro Vancouver schools/ school districts where there is a large number of students who may be interested in taking Punjabi, the process of determining their interests should start early in the calendar year so that the schools/ School Districts get enough time to hire teachers, provide classrooms and other support structure to ensure the success of the Punjabi classes. At the secondary school level, it should be included at the time of course selection early in the new year that Punjabi is available as an option from grade 9 onwards.

Incidentally, Punjabi is the tenth most spoken language in the world with more than 150 million speakers worldwide. In Canada and many other countries, it has now become an asset in employment opportunities. PLEA urges all political parties to give serious consideration to these recommendations.

President, Punjabi Language Education Association (PLEA Canada)

Spruce up your home this fall with these lighting tips

As days grow shorter, the role of lighting in our homes becomes more important than ever. The right lighting can transform your living space into a warm and inviting haven, perfect for cozying up during those cold winter nights. However, while creating a cozy atmosphere, it’s equally important to consider safety. Here’s how you can help to achieve a balance between comfort and security with your winter lighting.

Incorporate warm, soft lighting: Use warm-coloured light bulbs to create a cozy

glow. Table lamps with fabric shades and dimmable floor lamps add warmth, while string lights provide a soft, whimsical effect.

Enhance the atmosphere with candles: Flameless candles add an intimate, flickering light, perfect for winter.

Combine lighting with decor: Use accent lighting to highlight key areas like artwork or plants, enhancing the room’s ambiance. Decorative fixtures like lanterns or chandeliers can serve as both lighting and decor, adding style and warmth.

Prioritize safety: Check lighting fixtures and cords for wear and replace as needed. Use timers or smart plugs to avoid leaving lights on too long. Ensure lighting setups don’t block walkways or exits.

Balancing cozy ambiance with safety is key to winter lighting. With careful planning, you can enjoy a beautifully lit, safe and inviting home all season long.

The Thanksgiving recipe guide: new recipe for the holidays

The holiday season is certainly about the spirit of giving and spending time with family. But, let’s face it, stuffing our faces with traditional recipes and tasty new ones is also a big part of the appeal. With the latter in mind, here’s a hearty seasonal soup recipe to savour and three new desserts you can bake ahead to have on hand for guests.

Classic Cream of Mushroom Soup

This is a deliciously rich and creamy mushroom soup that you make in one pot. It makes a hearty appetizer or can be served as a vegetarian main course along with a warm buttered roll or rustic crusty bread for dipping. Leftovers can be packed in a thermos for a homemade school lunch, or a heart-warming snack after a fall outing.

Prep time: 10 minutes

Cook time: 25 minutes

Makes: 6 servings

Ingredients:

2 tbsp (30 ml) oil

1.5 lbs (680 grams) mixed mushrooms (crimini, shiitake, oyster), sliced

1 cup (250 ml) yellow onion, finely diced

3 cloves garlic, minced

1 tsp (5 ml) Italian seasoning

1/2 tsp (2 ml) each, salt and fresh ground pepper

4 tbsp (60 ml) butter

1/4 (60 ml) cup all-purpose flour

4 cups (1 L) chicken or vegetable broth

1 cup (250 ml) heavy cream

Fresh thyme or chopped parsley for garnish

Directions:

Heat oil in a large soup pot or Dutch oven on medium-high heat. Add mushrooms and onions; cook, stirring occasionally until the mushrooms are browned and the onions are translucent, about 8-10 minutes. Remove half of the mixture from the pot; set aside.

Add garlic, Italian seasoning, and salt and pepper to the pot; cook 30 seconds until fragrant.

Add butter, stirring until melted. Add flour, stirring to coat mushrooms, about 30 seconds.

Slowly add broth, stirring to combine. Allow soup to simmer, about 10 minutes. Using an immersion blender, blend the soup until smooth. Return reserved mushrooms to the pot.

Add cream, stirring to combine. Allow the soup to simmer for about 5 minutes, until thickened and creamy.

Serve hot, garnished with fresh thyme or parsley.

Tips:

Remove and discard the stems from shiitake mushrooms as they can be woody.

Replace the heavy cream with half-andhalf cream (10 per cent fat) to reduce the fat.

A Warm Welcome from ABBY: Persons Living with Dementia Gain Access to Meaningful Activity

Thanks to a generous donation from Sansar and Sawtantra Chauhan persons living with dementia at Bradley Centre, Long Term Care Facility, have received a warm welcome from ABBY an ambient activity technology for those living with dementia.

Dementia is an age-related progressive loss of cognitive function mostly affecting those 65 years and above. The condition is marked by a range of different symptoms including but not limited to trouble communicating, memory issues, and confused thinking.

The person-centred technology, ABBY, offers meaningful activity for those living with dementia. The interactive technology allows residents’ to be stimulated through various programs such as, petting a cat or turning a steering wheel to drive in the countryside.

ABBY can also be personalised for families/ friends to upload photos, songs, and favourite television shows to create purposeful engagements with loved ones.

According to Aaron Docksteader, manager of clinical operations, Bradley Centre Long Term

Care, “many residents use the system all on their own and those who require assistance, the staff and family members help them with the interaction. Our next step, we are looking at customizing some of the interactions based on the seasons and special events”.

Elizabeth Harris, executive director, Fraser Valley Health Care Foundation, is especially proud of this purchase and is looking to bring the state-ofthe-art technology to other health care sites. As she says, “the wall mounted technology is

easy to use and provides tangible experiences for those living with dementia in the Fraser Valley. It is most definitively an empowering technology for our residents”.

With an aging population, the number of people living with dementia in Canada is set to rise therefore we need to continue to focus on our physical, mental and emotional health; and especially help those living with dementia in long-term care homes. The Chauhan’s kind gift is a gesture of honouring those with dementia, “we have

seen some of our friends suffer from dementia and we wanted to help others maintain their ability” they say.

Dr. Jassal, donor relations, says “there needs to be greater steps made towards the psychological well-being for those living with dementia. ABBY is a person-centered technology that helps enrich the care environment by keeping the mind stimulated”. If you would like to support the Foundation in helping those living with dementia please contact: Lakhbir.Jassal@ fraserhealth.ca or visit fvhcf.ca to learn more.

The Fraser Valley Health Care Foundation raises funds for vital equipment and programs funded or endorsed by the Fraser Health Authority. They serve the communities of Abbotsford, Mission, Chilliwack, Hope, Agassiz and Harrison Hot Springs.

Community Celebrates Newcomers at Welcome Day Event

Abbotsford residents and newcomers gathered on September 19th to celebrate the Welcome Day event, hosted by the Abbotsford Local Immigration Partnership at Archway Community Services in collaboration with the City of Abbotsford. Held at the Matsqui Centennial Auditorium, the event invited community members to celebrate diversity as part of the national Welcoming Week.

Attendee Ihor shared, “I can hear a lot of English language and meet many interesting people. I see immigrants who came to Canada 5 or 10 years ago and I see what they do now. It inspires me for my future in Canada.”

Attendees were greeted by local officials, including Councillor Kelly Chahal, who emphasized the importance of fostering inclusivity, “as a council, we embrace diversity as our community’s greatest strength, and we want to make sure that people feel welcome here, no matter where you come from.”

Mayor Ross Siemens sent a warm video message, “I know it can be a little daunting to start a new life in a new place but I am hopeful that with the support of Archway Community Services, its partners, and the many other organizations in our city that are here to help, everyone who now calls Abbotsford home, feels equally welcomed and truly a part of our community.”

Chris Kelly, member of Semá:th First Nation and the Fraser Valley Métis Nation, shared a foundational introduction to Indigenous identities in Canada, and the importance of language for building right relationships in a shared community. Attendees also heard welcome greetings from the superintendent of Abbotsford School District and the Chief of Abbotsford Police.

Keynote speaker Kanta Naik, a decorated champion of diversity and immigrant herself, shared her inspiring journey and the impor-

tance of welcoming newcomers. Her moving speech resonated deeply with the audience as she recounted her experience adjusting to life in Canada and working tirelessly to support fellow immigrants.

“To the newcomers that are here today, I want to leave you with the fact that you are so lucky to be in Abbotsford because the city, the teams that work together here at Archway, the school district... you are in a very, very, very good community. I say that because I was the newcomer here as well and I’ve worked with newcomers who come, and I know that you have a lot of resources available,” said Naik.

Amanda Rahn, an instructor with the Archway Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada attended the event with her students. “The Welcome Day event was great! As a teacher to newcomers, I really enjoyed being able to take my students to this event and have them hear from different people in our community.

They really enjoyed hearing Kanta’s story of how she came to Canada and what she shared about what it was like to be a newcomer in Canada.”

The evening included a service fair where attendees could connect with local resources, making it easier for newcomers to access the support they need to thrive in their new home.

Archway event organizer Amy Van Bergen expressed her gratitude for the outpouring of support from the community, as well as the City of Abbotsford, the Abbotsford Chamber of Commerce, and the many service partners that contributed to the success of the evening.

“It’s so powerful to see families who have arrived in Canada as recently as a few weeks ago, standing in City Hall with decision-makers and taking photos with new friends and fellow language learners. Abbotsford is a community that makes gatherings like this possible, and that’s something we can all be proud of.”

Any hectic activity that has just started to You are in a good position to make some final decisions on something you may have first considered late July to mid August. The position of somebody else may be clearer now, particularly if they decide to bring something to an end. If this does happen it can make it easier in some way when it comes to normal routines in life.

Someone else can be very straightforward as to what they either like or expect from you. Be careful you don’t read into this more than is being offered, particularly if there is an expectation for you to take on responsibilities or to put things in place. Make decisions up to late September that will keep you in control of your finances.

Whatever you had to rethink when it comes to putting things in place since mid August will now allow you to be clear of mind to late September when it comes to something that might have been first discussed late July to mid August. You can now make decisions that please you. Don’t be tempted to spend too much though.

You are in an excellent position to be able to make decisions to late September that will take your life forward. You can feel as though you have greater personal choice or some control at last. There might be a second stage to this from January to April next year and for this reason it could be wise to ensure there is some flexibility.

Whatever financial decisions you may have first considered from late July to mid August can now be looked at more thoroughly, especially in relation to the best actions to take to be able to move forward. You need to be able to satisfy your own priorities, which may not necessarily fit in with the expectations of somebody else.

You are in a good position to come to realisations regarding any situations where you might feel as though you are taking on more than is reasonable on a regular basis. This is more about making decisions to bring matters to an end where commitments attached will have an inhibiting effect on possible future accomplishments.

Focus on anything you are determined to develop more for your own independence in the future. You can realise that contemplation alone will not move things forward. From now to early September you need to look at the commitments that would need to be taken on. Doing this in stages will help you to get used to the changes.

You could come to the realisation, from now to late September, that it is better to scale down ideas you might have had late July to mid August to be able to take these things into the future successfully. Others might have bigger ambitions but you can be happier with small steps, allowing you to have a feeling of better control.

Having absolute confidence about how you stand on any matter will engender respect from others, even though they may not fully agree with you. This could result in clarity when it comes to commitment and support, which may have been an issue from late July to mid August and was left hanging. Be mindful of the obligations you take on.

Something you thought had become evident since mid August where someone else’s decision making is concerned could again become more unknown to late September. It could be that they need to withdraw to make final decisions. These could involve taking your priorities into account as well as generating some sort of pleasure in life.

You are in a position to late Sep- tember to contemplate future plans and possibilities that you may have wanted from late July to mid August but could not finalise. You have the opportunity to engage with others and get a response. This could also have a lot to do with leaving the past behind up to 20th November so you can move on with a new life direction.

Something that wasn’t made perfectly clear or finalised by somebody else between late July and mid August can now return to late September where final decisions need to be made by them. It can be up to you to ensure they do not avoid responsibilities that could leave you with too much to get properly organised or put into place.

Credit card confidence: Your guide to stress-free spending

Living costs have increased in recent years and it’s not always easy to keep up with day-to-day expenses. But by following good practices with your credit card you can help reduce some of the stress that comes with high-interest debt.

Here are some things to keep in mind:

Aim to pay off your credit card balance each month to avoid interest. If this is not possible, pay at least the minimum amount to avoid penalties such as an interest rate increase or the cancellation of your card. Your credit score could also be affected negatively.

Regularly check your credit card statements for errors. When you check your credit card statement online, purchases will usually appear after a few days. Keep

receipts of all your credit card purchases so you can check the amounts against your statement. If you find an error, report it to your bank right away.

Take advantage of electronic alerts. Your bank must send you electronic alerts when the credit available on your credit card falls below $100. You may ask your bank to set them to a different amount that works better for you. These alerts can help you manage your day-to-day finances and avoid fees.

Consider professional help if you’re struggling to make payments. If you’re constantly having trouble paying off your credit card, contact your bank to find out what options you may have.

You may also seek help from a credit counsellor. A credit counselling agency can provide a range of services such as one-on-one counselling or group courses and seminars. They can also help you establish a debt management plan. But make sure you do your research to find a trustworthy organization and a qualified counsellor. You can check if an agency is in good standing with a provincial or national association. These associations require members to maintain specific standards of practice.

Why you should check your credit report – and how to do it

Keeping an eye on your credit report is crucial for maintaining your financial health. Credit bureaus in Canada, such as Equifax and TransUnion, collect different information about your credit history. Checking your own credit report does not affect your credit score, so it’s a good habit to get into.

Your credit report provides a detailed history of how you’ve used credit in the past. Regularly reviewing it helps you: Detect and correct errors that could affect your credit score.

Spot signs of identity theft early.

Understand your credit standing before applying for new credit.

5 tips for managing chronic pain

Chronic pain is one of the most common symptoms impacting daily life and quality of life for people with arthritis. An important part of arthritis pain control is self-management, including activities and supports you can use on your own to reduce joint pain.

Here are five strategies to help you take an active role in arthritis pain relief.

Physical activity and exercise

Arthritis may cause you to avoid physical activity for several reasons, including the fear of making your arthritis worse because movement is painful or because you are fatigued. Although it may be difficult to stay active when living with joint pain, maintaining regular physical activity can be an important part of pain control and retraining the brain to experience pain less intensely.

Eating well

There is no miracle diet for arthritis, but food can play a significant role in arthritis pain control. What we eat can impact inflammation, energy levels, mood and weight, which are all factors in how we experience pain. A diet rich in vegetables, fruits, whole grains, lean proteins and healthy fats can help reduce inflammation and manage weight. Heat or cold therapy

Heat and cold therapies can be helpful for short-term pain relief. Cold therapy can be used to reduce pain, inflammation and swelling if your joints are hot and swollen. Heat therapy is helpful for relaxing muscles and improving circulation. Be sure to protect yourself by placing a cloth or towel between the heat/cold treatment and your skin.

Online: You can access your credit report online for free from both credit bureaus. This method allows you to see your report immediately and is updated monthly.

By mail: Request your credit report by mail using forms provided by the respective companies. You’ll need to include copies of two pieces of acceptable identification, such as a driver’s license or passport.

By phone: Call Equifax at 1-800-4657166 or TransUnion at 1-800-663-9980 to request your free credit report. Be prepared to confirm your identity by answering personal and financial questions.

In person: Visit either credit bureau’s physical locations with at least two pieces of identification to request your credit report in person.

Protect yourself from fraud

Always ensure the website you use to access your credit report is secure (look for “https” in the URL and a padlock symbol next to it). Be cautious of fraudsters offering free credit reports or scores to steal your information.

By regularly checking your credit report, you can stay on top of your financial health and address any issues promptly.

Mindfulness meditation and other mind–body approaches

The brain is a powerful tool that can help control our experience of pain. Science has shown that techniques such as mindfulness meditation, cognitive behavioural therapy, distraction and visualization may help reduce the intensity of the physical pain we experience.

Assistive devices and joint protection

Taking action to protect your joints and minimize joint strain can help reduce arthritis pain and make daily tasks easier. Assistive devices including tools and gadgets, mobility aids, medical equipment or other technologies can help you perform activities of daily living more easily, including cooking, walking, or getting dressed.

Response to Conservative Candidates Not Willing To Participate In Public Debates. It Is Not A Good Sign

Elections are about voters choosing the person they believe will best represent their interests and concerns in government. Too often, voters focus on party platforms instead of the individual candidates on their ballot.

Yes, party platforms are important. But be careful about choosing a candidate who puts the interests of their political party first. To ensure that local representation truly means something, we can choose candidates who understand and respect their responsibility to the people they seek to represent.

How can you tell a candidate understands and respects that responsibility? You can start by looking at candidates who demonstrate a willingness to participate in candidate forums and debates. It won’t tell you everything about a candidate, but it at least tells you about their ability to make sound arguments, answer questions they may not

like, debate productively, and openly engage with the people they are seeking to represent.

More often than not, we don’t know much about the people running for office. At best, we have a sense of their public image and little bit about the party they represent.

As a consequence, people get elected to office not because we know them, but because we don’t.

I believe it is too big a risk to vote for any candidate who refuses to participate in an organized community debate.
