Local Businesses Suffer during COVID-19 Pandemic: Memento Mori Studios

O

ver the last couple of weeks, the government announced the closing down of businesses deemed to be “non-essential.” Since then, businesses relating to the personal services have been suffering to make ends meet. In an interview with Chris Gauthier, owner of Memento Mori Tattoo Studios, he said this industry has “really been neglected” by the government. Gauthier had closed his business on March 19th in order to ensure safety of his staff and clients, which was even before the government announced the mandatory closure of all personal service establishments on March 21. While remaining optimistic about supporting his staff, Gauthier was forced to lay off all 17 employees who he says are now receiving CERB payments for far less than their usual income. The biggest hit came when he approached his landlord, who refused Gauthier any chances to defer his lease during this closure. Although he has laid off all 17 employees and minimized [their] overhead to “just mandatory expenses,” Gauthier is still looking at expenses of around $30,000 in business expenses per month. With one establishment in Abbotsford, Memento Studios was working

Gauthier’s main concern now that it may be in the form of a loan is that his employees will be dis-

heartened to hear, while they have a chance, they cannot earn a better wage due to Memento’s savings weakening day by day. Gauthier is encouraging all citizens to shop local. “Shop at locally owned grocery markets, order beer from local breweries, contact local restaurants directly and order take out/ delivery, purchase gift cards for businesses that are completely closed,” he says. Although Gauthier is upset over how poorly the government has managed taking care of local businesses, he has supported Dr. Henry’s decisions, but said, “May’s statistics will determine my ultimate feelings towards this” and that “our lack of stricter regulations is extending the re-opening date.” “Through all of this I’ve been so impressed with how supportive our community is. So many individuals have reached out to share their experiences & concerns or offer encouragement for mine. There’s a lot of great people in our community and many have risen to the occasion in this most challenging time.” To shop for gift cards at Memento Mori Studios and support Chris Gauthier, please visit https://www. mementomoristudios.ca/gift-cards. html

UNITED SIKHS FEEDS OVER 1 MILLION DURING COVID-19 CRISIS Global NGO stands out as humanitarian force UNITED SIKHS is a United Nations affiliated international non-profit, humanitarian relief, human development and advocacy organization, has had boots on the ground providing support and supplies to families in need during the COVID-19 pandemic. UNITED SIKHS has stepped up with Emergency Aid Teams to feed families in need from all corners of the globe. From India, United Kingdom, Malaysia, Australia, United States, Canada and more. In total, UNITED SIKHS has fed over 1 million individuals in need. “As soon as COVID-19 was declared a global pandemic, UNITED SIKHS immediately began working with authorities to provide as much support as possible.” reported UNITED SIKHS, International Humanitarian Aid Director, Gurvinder Singh. In the United States, UNITED SIKHS has provided support in California, Washington, Utah, Maryland and was tapped by New York’s Office of Emergency Management to prepare and serve 30,000 meals to New Yorkers at the start of the New York State on Pause Executive Order that led to the eventual New York City quarantine.

The needs of every geographical area are varied, but UNITED SIKHS is uniquely capable to act quickly and provide communities with specific needs. For example, sanitizing is needed in Gurdwaras in India along with providing meals to thousands of migrant workers. While on the other side of the world in Canada, Food Banks were built to provide families and the elderly with groceries and hygienic items. “When the general public is asked to stock their shelves for an undetermined amount of time, they overlook a great number of families who cannot afford to do so,” reports UNITED SIKHS Operations Manager, Canadian Chapter, Harpreet Singh. “For those families, UNITED SIKHS is dedicated to making sure they receive the supplies they need.”

Whether building food bank or delivering goods to resident’s doors, UNITED SIKHS will remain in step with our mission. By providing humanitarian action when needed to save lives, alleviate suffering and maintain human dignity during and after disasters caused by natural hazards. The UNITED SIKHS goal is to always prevent and strengthen preparedness for emergency situations In Europe, similar sentiments were such as the COVID-19 pandemic. heard when food and basic needs We hope you will help us to continue were distributed in the United Kingthis vital program to serve those who dom. Applications for B.C. Emergency kfimafˆ leI bI sI aYmrjYˆsI bYnIiPwt Benefit for Workers to open May 1 leI arËIafˆ ñ meI nUM KuwlxgIafˆ

Temporary relief is on the way for British Columbians whose ability to work has been affected by COVID-19, with applications for the $1,000 B.C. Emergency Benefit for Workers (BCEBW) opening on May 1, 2020.

“This benefit is further help for British Columbians who are worried about paying their bills and making ends meet during the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Carole James, Minister of Finance. “During these uncertain times, we want to get through this together by helping displaced workers support themselves and their families.” The BCEBW is a one-time, tax-free $1,000 payment for British Columbians whose ability to work has been affected as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Most people who are eligible for the new federal Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB) are also eligible for the BCEBW, including those who have run out of employment insurance (EI) benefits and subsequently qualify for the CERB. To be eligible for the BCEBW, people must: • have been a resident of British Columbia on March 15, 2020; • meet the eligibility requirements for the CERB;

Payments will start to go out within days of application. While there may be minor delays during the initial surge, government staff will be working to quickly process payments.

“No student should ever have to go without food, whether they’re learning in class or at home,” said Rob Fleming, Minister of Education. “Despite the challenging times we’re living in, school-district staff have partnered with local non-profits and businesses in a community effort to ensure kids and their families are getting the nutritious food they need, no matter where they live or learn.”

said. “This important work is giving vulnerable families throughout the province the support they need to help their children thrive away from the traditional classroom setting.” School districts from every corner of the province are developing their own unique plans to meet the needs of their communities.

The Surrey School District immediately implemented a meal pick-up and delivery program, with staff in various positions stepping up to help bring food to students. And in the Kelowna area, Central Teachers, education assistants, administrators and school support staff are putting together weekly grocery hampers for families, delivering food boxes and bagged lunches to homes and setting up designated hubs for meal pick-up. Some school districts are also providing grocery store gift cards and vouchers, while others have formed partnerships with caterers, non-profits, restaurants, local businesses and food banks to support vulnerable families. More than 16,000 families are receiving these services throughout the province.

Okanagan Public school has teamed up with Brown Bag Lunch and Food for Thought to provide thousands of meals for local families, with weekly pick-ups that help maintain physical distance.

In addition to CommunityLINK and Vulnerable Student Supplement funding, the Province is supporting families by shifting the focus of the B.C. The program will deliver fruits and vegetables to low-income families with children “So many people are stepping up through Food Banks BC, in partnerto make sure students are getting ship with schools and communitynutritious meals at home,” Fleming based youth programs. The Komagata Maru Affair Ranjit Singh Malhi On 22 February 1913, these organizations organized a mass meeting in Vancouver and agreed to send a three-man delegation represented by Nand Singh Sihra, Balwant Singh Khurdpur and Narain Singh Chobdar to London and to India for the redress of their grievances. The delegation left for England on 17 March 1913. Sir John Anderson, Undersecretary of State for the Colonies, met the trio informally and stated that Canadian immigration policy was “entirely outside of British jurisdiction.” The delegation then left for India and met the Viceroy, Lord Hardinge and Sir Michael O’Dwyer, LieutenantGovernor of the Punjab. The Viceroy in his meeting with the trio on 20 December 1913 “only agreed to press for a removal of the continuous passage restriction as it applied to wives and children.” In a nutshell, the racial discrimination policy practiced by the Canadian and American authorities coupled with the failure of the British Raj to protect the rights of Indian immigrants transformed, in the words of Gobind Behari Lal, “the most loyal citizens of the British empire [into] its most violent detractors.” Birth of the Ghadar Movement The birth of the Ghadar movement can be traced to the formation of the Hindustani Association of the Pacific Coast, an anti-British and revolutionary organization, around July 1912 at Portland, Oregon. Sohan Singh Bhakna was elected as the President; G. D. Kumar as Secretary and the editor of the proposed propaganda weekly paper in Urdu, Hindustan (The India); and Kanshi Ram as Treasurer. A branch of the “Hindustani Association” was established towards the end of 1912 or beginning of 1913 at Astoria with Kesar Singh as the President and Balwant Singh as the Secretary. The aims of the Hindustani Association were (i) receipt

of vernacular papers from India; (ii) importation of youths from India to America for education with a view to their devoting their lives to “national” work in India; and (iii) to hold weekly meetings for discussing politics. The Hindustani Association formed at Portland hardly functioned as G.D. Kumar soon fell ill and was hospitalized. Efforts were then made to contact Har Dayal for assistance. Har Dayal arrived at St. Johns in May 1913. He proposed the establishment of a weekly propaganda paper (Ghadar) to preach revolutionary ideas among the Indians. The proposal was accepted with the headquarters of the Ghadar to be established at San Francisco and to be named Yugantar Ashram (New Era Centre). Similar meetings were subsequently held at other places (including Portland, Linnton, Bridal Veil and Winans) which resulted in the formation of the Hindi Association of the Pacific Coast’s branches and election of three office bearers-- President, Secretary, and Treasurer.

The delegates of the various branches of the association attended a meeting on 2 June 1913 held at the Hindu Hotel, Astoria, Oregon. The meeting officially agreed to establish a revolutionary organization called the “Hindi Association of the Pacific Coast” to liberate India from British slavery through armed struggle and establish a republican government based on liberty and equality. Sohan Singh Bhakna was elected as President, Har Dayal as the Secretary, and Kanshi Ram as Treasurer. The earlier decisions made pertaining to the publication of the Ghadar and the establishment of Yugantar Ashram as the political headquarters of the movement in San Francisco (the capital of the revolutionary movements of the world) were reaffirmed.

More support for family caregivers during COVID-19

s part of British Columbia’s emergency COVID-19 response plan, the Province is doubling this year’s funding for Family Caregivers of British Columbia to $1 million, helping support both caregivers and seniors. Family Caregivers of B.C. is a notfor-profit organization that supports people who are caring for elderly loved ones, family or friends. What's the average legal fee for an ICBC claim and are there any hidden charges? If you have been seriously injured by another driver’s negligence, you will undoubtedly have questions about how you will be compensated by ICBC for the injuries caused by the car accident. An experienced lawyer will ensure that your damages are properly assessed and that you are fully compensated for your injuries. But that raises a related question: how much does it cost to have a personal injury lawyer represent you? Let’s discuss the average legal fee for an ICBC claim and the potential for hidden charges in your claim against ICBC. Average Legal Fee for an ICBC Claim BC lawyers can provide legal services under a few different types of fee arrangements, for example, a flat fee or an hourly rate for the number of hours worked. However, most personal injury lawyers who handle ICBC claims do so under a “contingency fee agreement.” This means that the lawyer’s fees are based on a percentage of the settlement received or judgment ordered. It also means that if there is no award the lawyer cannot charge legal fees. Under BC law, the maximum contingency fee that a lawyer can charge is 33.3% for a personal injury claim or a wrongful death claim arising from a car accident. ICBC lawyers in BC set their firm’s contingency fee percentage in light of that maximum limit. The average legal fee is in the range of 25% to 33.3% regardless of the severity of injuries.

• You should be clear on what the contingency fee agreement says about legal fees and disbursements if you terminate the agreement prior to resolution of your ICBC claim. You may be required to pay the lawyer’s fees on an hourly basis plus disburseDiscuss Fees with Your Lawyer Upments if you terminate the agreement front or decide to change lawyers. Parliamentary secretary's statement on safe spaces for people leaving violence Mitzi Dean, Parliamentary Secretary for Gender Equity, has issued the following statement on the Province’s ongoing support for women and children experiencing violence during the COVID-19 pandemic:

munities throughout B.C. for people leaving violent or unstable situations, with more spaces to come. These are in addition to more than 100 transition houses and safe homes that the Province funds on an ongoing basis.

“Home should be a safe place for everyone, but for many, that is not the case. Women, children and non-binary people are often at a higher risk of domestic and targeted violence, and this danger has only increased during this stressful time. As this pandemic requires us to stay home and keep our distance from friends and extended family, people facing violence or abuse – many with children – need our help more than ever to find a safe place to stay.

“If you or someone you know is experiencing violence or abuse, please contact VictimLinkBC at 1 800 563-0808 or by email: VictimLinkBC@bc211.ca “They can connect you to these supports and are available to help 24/7 with service in multiple languages.

“Domestic and sexual abuse is not a private matter to be kept behind closed doors. Violence should never be tolerated – not during this pandemic and not ever. It’s wrong, and we will be there “As of today, the Province has secured for people who need our help and a safe nearly 300 additional spaces in com- place to go, day or night.”

Rent relief for small businesses Thousands of small businesses in British Columbia will see their monthly rent reduced by at least 75%, thanks to the new federal-provincial Canada Emergency Commercial Rent Assistance Program (CECRA). “While many small businesses have closed their doors to help keep people safe and healthy, this has not stopped the bills from coming in,” said Carole James, Minister of Finance. “British Columbia is pleased to partner with the federal government on the CECRA, a welcome next step that will help thousands of commercial property owners and tenants in British Columbia.”

The loans will be forgiven if the landlord reduces the tenant’s monthly rent by at least 75%. The commercial tenant would be responsible for covering 25%, the property owner 25%, while the federal and provincial governments share the remaining 50%.

“This program is not just about providing relief for people today, it’s also about planning for our future and making sure that businesses and local economies are ready to be part of B.C.’s economic recovery,” James added. “We look forward to working with the federal government on the details of this program, as well as future opportunities to keep all B.C. Launching in mid-May 2020, the CE- businesses and communities resilient CRA will see B.C. small businesses throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.” receive a total of over $300 million The CECRA will be administered by in federal-provincial relief, with B.C. the federal government through the contributing an estimated $80 million. Canada Mortgage and Housing CorThe 75% reduction in monthly rent poration. for small businesses affected by COVID-19 will be achieved by providing forgivable loans to cover 50% of the rent payments for eligible small business tenants for April, May and June.

In addition to commercial rent relief, the B.C. government is offering significant support to businesses during the COVID-19 pandemic, including tax reductions, delays and deferrals.

Getting frustrated at limitations you need to deal with will be of no help. Be careful this does not encourage you to spend money on impulse. This would normally be a socially busy time for you where celebrations abound. Instead you should take the opportunity to complete any unfinished jobs or let something go, once and for all.

It will be easy for you to recognise any areas where you have become too much of a slave to the needs of others. This may have gone on for a long time. It is now that you should take action to change this. What has been a significant change in you is that you are unlikely to find yourself worrying about how you will be thought of.

Venus, the planet of social activity and pleasure now in your sign is being put under pressure that inhibits the usual ability to simply enjoy yourself. Other priorities are overtaking this ability. Future possibilities will seem difficult to pursue. On the positive side this can encourage you to narrow down and even drop some goals.

Somebody’s expectations of you could be in conflict with important priorities to you. If they have authority in some way or think they do you may need to hide exactly how you feel until you can get support from those who realise this needs to come to an end. They may be in a better position to be able to argue the point.

If there is something you are not quite sure about you should search out more information, which could result in some unexpected realisations. It will be difficult to plan social activities for the future but this won’t last forever. You can make a lot of progress with little jobs you have left unattended. Get them out of the way.

You can enjoy getting something out of the way that has perhaps had ups and downs or followed an unpredictable path since early February. On the positive side this has possibly given you more insight into somebody else. Developing greater strength when it comes to doing too much for others can only be of benefit.

The Full Moon this week falls into your sign giving you the opportunity to fully realise something about yourself, which can include what is most important to you. Some tension could arise with someone else related to what you believe is the most balanced way to pursue something into the future. Don’t give up because of it.

There can be a lot building up behind the scenes, which is not obvious. Don’t allow a rebellious attitude or behaviour from somebody else to disrupt what you have been working on putting into place. The more certain you are about your ideas or information you have sought out, the more determined you should be to follow it.

There can be disappointments with social activities and people you were planning to catch up with. It will provide the opportunity to do something that you have wanted to do but haven’t found the time. This does not include work on more routine matters though. It could be searching out information, even reading a book.

Try not to worry too much about finances. Most important is not to spend money on things you don’t really need. You are blessed with natural discipline and self control that you can call up when required. Best to find new daily pleasures to replace those that might cost too much right now or simply can’t be fulfilled.

You could be unmovable when it comes to anything that you feel will affect you personally. Where someone might have thought you were flexible they may be in for a shock when they discover you can have a stubborn streak when pushed too far. You could be disappointed about a social event you were looking forward to.

You sense that you are on the verge of moving on in some way after all sorts of twists and turns since early February. With this can come a realisation that you need to consider other things that should eventually be wound up in preparation for a new 2 year cycle that will begin for you in mid May. There is no rush right now.

I urge for distributing sanitary pads along with daily rations : Manushi Chhillar

I have experienced sleep paralysis : Vicky

Gorgeous Miss World 2017 Manushi Chhillar, who is set to debut in Akshay Kumar's Prithviraj, has always championed the cause of women. She backs Project Shakti, a non-profit programme, that has joined hands with local women across India and has empowered them to make a living by educating them to make biodegradable sanitary pads. The initiative works towards raising the awareness on menstrual hygiene among women in the local communities of these women. Manushi lauds the government's decision to include sanitary pads as essential commodity amid coronavirus crisis. However, she explains that underprivileged women have become prone to severe risks due to shortage of funds in the hands of daily wage earners because of SARS-CoV-2 – the terminology now being used by medical fraternity to describe coronavirus globally. Manushi has an appeal to make to the all the government authorities.

Vidya Balan pledges to donate 1000 PPE kits to healthcare workers Actor Vidya Balan has decided to donate 1000 Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) kits to frontline healthcare workers across India. In a video message posted on her Facebook page, the actor announced that she is also collaborating with celebrity shoutout platform Tring to raise money for additional 1000 PPE kits. “In the war against COVID-19, our health care professionals are like our soldiers at the border fighting for our health and freedom. Just like we equip our soldiers for the battle, we must do the same with our medical staff. There is a critical shortage of PPE for our senior doctors, residents, nurses and ward boys in their daily work,” she said. “As a result, a lot of our hospitals are not functioning at full capacity. Join me in changing this now. I am donating 1000 PPE kits to hospital and medical staff across the country. And I am pledging to raise money for another 1000,” she

added.According to a statement issued by the actor ’s team, she has joined hands with Tring to provide additional 1000 PPE kits, in association with Manish Mundra of Drishyam Films and photographer-producer Atul Kasbekar. For donations made through Tring, Vidya Balan will be recognising the support of every donor by sending a personal thank you video message, and a chance for a twominute video call with her. Vidya said each PPE kit is worth Rs 650 (allinclusive of delivery costs and applicable taxes) and it consists of one coverall laminated and waterproof, nitrile gloves, goggles, face shields, 3-ply surgical mask and shoe covers

Actor Vicky Kaushal feels the phenomenon of sleep paralysis is scary. Vicky recently conducted an interactive session with fans. When a user asked him if he has ever seen a ghost in real life, Vicky opened up on the subject of sleep paralysis."I have experienced sleep paralysis couple of times. It's damn scary," he wrote. Sleep paralysis is a medical condition where a person, on waking up from sleep, experiences temporary inability to move or speak. The actor also shared that he is scared of watching horror films. Incidentally, he recently starred in the horror film, "Bhoot Part One: The Haunted Ship". The film performed below expectations.Vicky will next be seen in Shoojit Sircar's "Sardar Udham Singh". He has also signed Meghna Gulzar's film biopic of Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw. He will be essaying the title roles in both films.

Chronicling my journey in the film industry : Divya Dutta

Shraddha Kapoor shares her diet plans and what she said is so relatable Shraddha Kapoor is an actress who has a penchant for having the ability to adapt to various characters on-screen. In 2020, we saw the actress enticing the audience of the Indian film industry with her dance moves in Street Dancer 3D and we also saw her as a rebel in the actionpacked movie Baaghi 3. In both the movies she had a dazzling look and an impressive physique, due to that many have pondered over how she controls her diet to maintain her physique and the answer will certainly astound the audience!Recently, when Shraddha was in an interview with a magazine she was asked if she was mindful

of her diet and if yes, then did she have any tips and tricks to maintaining a healthy physique, she said, "I am not rigid with my diet because I love food. However, I do try to keep a balance between junk food and eating healthy." The actress describes to the audience how she is a foodie and just regulates her diet by balancing between junk food and eating healthy. She is truly a source of inspiration. Shraddha Kapoor is definitely captivating the hearts of the audience as an actress and even as a person. The actress had an amazing 2019 with hits like Saaho and Chhichhore. She is emerging glorious due to the success of Baaghi 3 and will be seen alongside Ranbir Kapoor in a Luv Ranjan directorial

"Writing a book is no joke," starts off Divya Dutta, whose last published work, Me and Ma, hit the stands in 2017. Trying to meet her publisher's deadline, the actor has already begun work on her next book amidst the lockdown. The actor agrees that it takes up most of her time. "I think people liked my nostalgic journey [in Me and Ma] and it's beautiful to express what you feel and find a connect with the readers," says Dutta, as she makes writing her priority. She reveals that being in the film industry for almost two decades has provided fodder for her book. "I am writing a memoir on the film industry. It will chronicle my journey in cinema, but I wouldn't call it a biography," says the actor as she explains that the earlier book was also a chapter of her life, but through the eyes of her mother. "This is going to be different from what I have written or shared before," says Dutta of the yet-untitled book.Dutta's next, Sheer Qorma, is a story on the LGBTQAI+ community. She credits her impulsive nature for her choice of films. "I am called a risk-taker because I am impulsive about my choices. I go by my intuition when I get a script. The story of Sheer Qorma moved me as it talks about acceptance by the people you love unconditionally," says the actor, adding Fire (1996) was ahead of its time.
