Strange Days, Indeed In 1980, when John Lennon recorded the lyrics “Strange Days Indeed” in his song Nobody Told Me There’d Be Days Like These, I’m very sure he wasn’t referencing the pandemic of 2020. However, it sure provides us with perspective, these 40 years later. Those lyrics resonated with millions of people around the world back in 1980’s, and have done so through crisis in the 1990’s and again in September 2001 and 2008. Crisis following crisis. We’re experiencing one again in 2020. Maybe drastic change and crisis isn’t so strange or rare after all. 2020 has brought us a tidal wave of change. Deaths, sickness, economic turmoil, divisiveness, rumours and opinions getting more coverage than science and fact, the list goes on. The continually changing news has many people shaking their heads and mumbling under their breath, “What’s Next?” This unpredictability and perception of lacking control is causing a tremendous amount of stress for many. “These sure are strange days” seems to be the term many people are using to describe the unpredictability of today. Strange because the unpredictability, strange because it seems we’re not in control, just strange. But, what if we could predict the unpredictable, would that make these days feel less strange and even a bit less stressful? Science says it is possible. The Science – The Next 30 Days of Strangeness Studies have shown the human brains feel rewarded, and therefore happier and less stressed, when it can predict, or perceive it can control, an outcome. It’s why finishing a project feels so good. It’s why gambling is so addictive. It’s why music can be so enjoyable. It’s why those people you know who are always negative are actually happy when something turns out negative. In fact, this search for the feeling of predictable outcome plays a role in many areas of our lives. For entry into the science backing this notion, begin with the simply written book “Stumbling on Happiness” by Daniel Gilbert. Gilbert’s research on

happiness points to the same unsettling fact: happiness has little to do with what happens to us in our lives, and more to do with how close the outcome was to our assumption and prediction. Whether during a worldwide pandemic, or while watching your number come up in roulette. Gilbert’s theory is that we each have a “psychological immune system.” Basically, a story generator where our minds explain away our past experience and current situations while creating future projections such a way that it always searches for a baseline level of mild happiness. And it’s when this “immune system” fails, such as during times of extreme unpredictability such as during a pandemic, that we risk falling into prolonged depression and/or emotional crises. (ref: https://en.wikipedia.org/ wiki/Stumbling_on_Happiness ) Well, given today’s unpredictability and general lack of control over what you can do, where you can go, what restaurants you can eat in, which relatives you’re supposed to visit, you begin to see why today is feeling so strange. The brain just feels like it has lost control of life and its ability to find that baseline level of happiness.

However, there is an antidote, or Life- witness those emotions manifesting on hack, that can help you avoid getting social media and amongst the people you interact with. On the other hand, to caught in the trap. you will now see these actions for what The Antidote – Forewarned is Fore- they are, their brain’s attempt to gain armed some level of control and predictability. antidotes to the potential negative affects. Looking back at the science of the brain again, if it is prepared for ‘strange unpredictable occurrences’ to occur in the future, it is the same chemically as if it were ‘predicting and controlling’ those unpredictable changes. This little Lifehack leads to clarity of thought and a general feeling of happiness even This constant search for that baseline from what could very well prove to be is also where see trouble brewing. During this coming ‘strange’ period, start by understanding Sadly, without the ability of the brain and predicting that the unpredictable to feel in control, other emotions begin will occur. It won’t make the news any to bubble to the surface and most of better or any more enjoyable. However, those are quite destructive. It is a predictable trap that You’ll find yourself in a much better many will find themselves in. It is at mental state to analyze the news, then that point when John Lennon’s lyrics adapt your actions accordingly. Many will resonate again “Nobody Told Me will still be drawn emotionally into the stories, leaving logic behind. You’ll There Would Be Days Like These.”

Here’s the Great Part Once you find yourself observing more and reacting less, you’ll find you have much more energy to help others, to volunteer to assist your friends, family and community, to help those you love find their way through these next few confusing months. And you can do it with less judgement, fewer arguments and lower stress and with a LOT more energy. “Stay out of the Fray… And You Will Own The Day” Science, biology, economics and reality pull at us everyday. It is our #1 job to ensure we are using every tool we can to not allow this combination to steer us off of our path or change who we want to be. We must, especially during ‘Strange Days,’ keep checking in on ourselves by finding tricks and lifehacks to feel more in control. If we do that more often than not we will win not only that specific day, we will win in life. Opening this column with a John Lennon lyrical quote leads me to closing it the same way. Always keep in mind: “Life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans.” Be Well, Be Safe, Be Compassionate.

“BRIDGING COMMUNITIES”

Latest Update on Condition of Afghan Sikhs and Hindus UNITED SIKHS has been advocating for and serving Afghan Sikhs for many years. This work is ongoing and the families of those lost and injured have been provided assistance. Avenues for Immigration documentation to allow for resettlement are being pursued and the necessary resources to obtain such documentation have been put in place. Delays may occur due to the extenuating circumstances of COVID-19 and the closure of government offices in Kabul. The safety and security of the Afghan Sikhs and Hindu families are paramount. The Afghan Sikhs and Hindus have been told repeatedly, “that you Kafirs should be eliminated in other cities of Afghanistan and not just through the attacks in Kabul and Jalalabad.” Imminent threats still exist today to Afghan Sikhs and Hindus. UNITED SIKHS is closely monitoring the situation. The Afghan Sikhs have instructed UNITED SIKHS to keep all numbers on donated amounts confidential for fear of being kidnapped for ransom. In addition, resources to help offset the adverse impact of Covid-19 have been put into place as Covid-19 has hindered efforts for resettlement and placed an undue burden on our Afghan Sikh brothers and sisters who are locked down with many unable to access daily essentials. All the immediate necessities were relayed by UNITED SIKHS representatives in Ghazni, Jalalabad, and Kabul, and funds have already been wired and sent across. We thank the Sangat for supporting our fundraising campaign on Gofundme. As most are aware these funds have been raised but as the campaigns are ongoing and because of the process and certain protocol of digital fundraising platforms they are yet to be collected. However, due to the urgency of the predicament of our Afghan Sikh brothers and sisters, UNITED SIKHS immediately re-

leased emergency funds on multiple occasions to provide relief in the interim. The funds collected through our ongoing fundraisers are primarily to be spent for Humanitarian Aid (including their immediate needs in the interim and final destinations) and Advocacy efforts towards their temporary and permanent resettlement. In this context, UNITED SIKHS will be working with many Panthic organizations collectively and transparently. We welcome inquiries from donors and aim to answer questions to the best of our abilities within the current security context of Afghanistan. Also, routine updates will be provided as well as a report issued once the project reaches certain milestones or completion. The current crisis faced by the Afghan Sikhs can be faced by Sikhs in other nations. Our legal and humanitarian response teams are working collectively and give us the lucid ability to build on mechanisms to confront these potential scenarios in an immediate manner. The Panth has to unite to take on such challenges with the help of friendly nations and world bodies. The welfare and the security of the minorities in Afghanistan are paramount.

Government creates COVID-19 temporary layoff period

T

o ease financial hardship on businesses and to keep employees connected with their jobs during the COVID-19 pandemic, government has extended the temporary layoff period to 16 weeks for COVID-19 related reasons. Previously under the Employment Standards Act, a temporary layoff longer than 13 weeks in any 20-week period (or about three months in a five-month period) was considered a permanent layoff. With a permanent layoff, employers are required to provide employees with written working notice of termination and/or pay severance to qualifying employees, based on their length of service. Now, temporary layoffs relating to the COVID-19 pandemic can be extended to 16 weeks, if the employee agrees.

A parent's guide to clean air at home (NC) When there are kids in the house, cleaning is a year-round chore. And parents are always looking for the best ways to keep their home safe while looking and smelling fresh. To keep your home and family safe when using cleaning products, consider these smart and practical tips: 1. Mother nature’s irritants. In some cases, DIY or natural products are not always safer than products made in a lab. Many plants naturally produce oils that are toxic or irritating, or that can cause allergic reactions when inhaled or when they contact skin. Whether you're using natural,

DIY products or consumer products, always make sure to read the label and ensure there are no ingredients in there that you know can irritate you or your family members. 2. Keep your home well ventilated. Just as pollutants get trapped inside a closed-up home, so can odours. Regularly opening your windows for short periods of time each day can greatly improve the scent of your home and air circulation by airing out those nasty smells. 3. When you can’t get rid of those pesky cooking smells. Certain odours linger – they are mysterious and often a combination of cooking aromas that get trapped and become stale. Thanks to the science behind Febreze and the simple ingredients in it, it’s a great option for clearing away odours and leaving your home smelling fresh. PAGE 16

Getting frustrated at limitations you need to deal with will be of no help. Be careful this does not encourage you to spend money on impulse. This would normally be a socially busy time for you where celebrations abound. Instead you should take the opportunity to complete any unfinished jobs or let something go, once and for all.

It will be easy for you to recognise any areas where you have become too much of a slave to the needs of others. This may have gone on for a long time. It is now that you should take action to change this. What has been a significant change in you is that you are unlikely to find yourself worrying about how you will be thought of.

Venus, the planet of social activity and pleasure now in your sign is being put under pressure that inhibits the usual ability to simply enjoy yourself. Other priorities are overtaking this ability. Future possibilities will seem difficult to pursue. On the positive side this can encourage you to narrow down and even drop some goals.

Somebody’s expectations of you could be in conflict with important priorities to you. If they have authority in some way or think they do you may need to hide exactly how you feel until you can get support from those who realise this needs to come to an end. They may be in a better position to be able to argue the point.

If there is something you are not quite sure about you should search out more information, which could result in some unexpected realisations. It will be difficult to plan social activities for the future but this won’t last forever. You can make a lot of progress with little jobs you have left unattended. Get them out of the way.

You can enjoy getting something out of the way that has perhaps had ups and downs or followed an unpredictable path since early February. On the positive side this has possibly given you more insight into somebody else. Developing greater strength when it comes to doing too much for others can only be of benefit.

The Full Moon this week falls into your sign giving you the opportunity to fully realise something about yourself, which can include what is most important to you. Some tension could arise with someone else related to what you believe is the most balanced way to pursue something into the future. Don’t give up because of it.

There can be a lot building up behind the scenes, which is not obvious. Don’t allow a rebellious attitude or behaviour from somebody else to disrupt what you have been working on putting into place. The more certain you are about your ideas or information you have sought out, the more determined you should be to follow it.

There can be disappointments with social activities and people you were planning to catch up with. It will provide the opportunity to do something that you have wanted to do but haven’t found the time. This does not include work on more routine matters though. It could be searching out information, even reading a book.

Try not to worry too much about finances. Most important is not to spend money on things you don’t really need. You are blessed with natural discipline and self control that you can call up when required. Best to find new daily pleasures to replace those that might cost too much right now or simply can’t be fulfilled.

You could be unmovable when it comes to anything that you feel will affect you personally. Where someone might have thought you were flexible they may be in for a shock when they discover you can have a stubborn streak when pushed too far. You could be disappointed about a social event you were looking forward to.

You sense that you are on the verge of moving on in some way after all sorts of twists and turns since early February. With this can come a realisation that you need to consider other things that should eventually be wound up in preparation for a new 2 year cycle that will begin for you in mid May. There is no rush right now.

(NC) Emergency situations, such as the current COVID-19 pandemic, can be very stressful. But there are things you can do to manage your finances and make things easier for you and your family. Here are three useful strategies to get you started. Have a budget. Having a budget is key for all circumstances, especially when you’re trying to manage through an emergency. It will help you assess whether you can keep up with your bills and maintain your current standard of living. If you need help, the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada’s online budget planner is a great resource. Be proactive by seeking help. If you're having trouble paying your daily expenses or foresee financial challenges in your future, be proactive by seeking help. A good first step is to contact your financial institution. Discuss your situation with them. They may be

able to defer the payments on some of your credit products, like your mortgage. A financial professional, such as a licensed financial advisor or an accredited credit counsellor, can also help you develop a plan to deal with an emergency. Borrow credit responsibly. During any uncertain period, try to avoid borrowing additional money as much as possible. But, if you must borrow, only borrow what you need and look for products with low interest rates and fees. Make sure you compare all your options and their fees, interest rates and repayment terms before choosing a credit product.

Simplicity should be the way of life: Dharmendra

I ride horses swim, and run : Jacqueline Fernandez spending time at that place and what exactly has the lockdown taught her? She has spilled the beans on all in her recent interview. Speaking to the daily, she said, "At the farm, I ride horses, swim, run and do yoga to keep myself fit. Being amidst nature has never felt so good. This lockdown has helped me devote more time to activities that I enjoy. This The worldwide lockdown has includes reading, too." And just like any other forced us to stay at homes, stay actor, she is also missing her closest friends indoors, and stay as far away from and family, she says, "Earlier, I wouldn't be people as possible. Some are safe in so much in touch with them, but lately, I have their own homes and some are abroad been spending a lot of time with them, though with friends or alone. Jacqueline virtually." On the work front, she has films Fernandez, however, is locked down like Mrs. Serial Killer, Attack, and Kick 2. And at a farmhouse and that farmhouse is this is what she has to say on getting back to at Panvel. Yes, we are talking about work, "I am eagerly waiting to get back to get dressed and Salman Khan's very popular farmhouse shoots, missing all where he celebrates his birthday every have fun… I am year. How has the actress been that."

I'm choosy when it comes to films : Adah Sharma Actress Adah Sharma says she is picky when it comes to signing films and that she tries to pick something that is different from what she has done before. "Yes, I am picky when it comes to choosing films. I try to be part of films that I would want to watch. I also try to pick different roles from what I have done. I started with '1920'. I am very fortunate, the actresses in our industry for years don't get a chance to do what I got to do in

my debut," Adah said.Adah made her Bollywood debut 2008 with the film "1920". She was later seen in films like "Hum Hai Raahi Car Ke", the "Commando" franchise, "Bypass Road" and "Phhir". She also worked in the southern film industry. Adah says she likes to surprise the audience. "I try with each film to do something different because the audience also waits to see 'what different

Veteran actor Dharmendra believes the biggest takeaway from the coronavirus pandemic should be the importance of leading a simple life.Dharmendra, 84, believes people should take the lockdown positively.“Due to lockdown there is no pollution, there is so much fresh air, the sky is so clear, everything looks beautiful. I am so happy to see this time it reminds me of the time that we lived back then. We all should take lockdown positively,” the actor said.“I am living life like this and I am very happy about it. I come to the city when there is work (referring to films) and when not I am happy here in my farmhouse. I am born to give happiness, entertain and inspire everyone,” he added. The actor believes the pandemic is the result of

the actions of humans and the only way to survive now is to live in sync with nature.“It is a very tight slap on our face from mother earth. We need to love and nurture nature. The virus has come because of us and we are suffering because of our own actions. I hope people understand and cut down on a lot of unessential things and not become greedy and be happy with what they have. Less is always good. Simplicity should be the way of life. Everyone must follow this. This is a lesson for life,” he said.Away from the fast-paced life and brouhaha of Bollywood, Dharmendra spends most of his time at his farmhouse in Lonavala. He was last seen in a full-fledged role in 2018 film Yamla Pagla Deewana: Phir Se with sons Sunny and Bobby Deol.

Just as the film was gaining steam, like 'anyone can do that!'. So the theatre lockdown brought its box-office run to a screeching nowadays even if it is a short film halt. With the Anubhav Sinha-directed venture dropping online like I just did 'Tindey', 'moh' or a over the weekend, Pannu believes it has arrived at the right time, music video... I try to pick given the sharp spike in cases of domestic violence. "Thappad something that is different from was in theatres for only two weeks, and its numbers were rising what I have done and others have due to positive word-of-mouth. It would have run for another three done as well," she said. weeks. But in March, COVID-19 was a far bigger crisis than the [boxoffice] numbers of any movie. Everyone associated with the film got their due, and now, it's out there for others to watch too," says the actor, who shone as Amrita, a doting wife who finds herself re-assessing her marriage after an episode of domestic violence. By bringing powerful women-driven narratives to the screen, Pannu has built a loyal fan base over the past few years. But where audiences have hailed her for becoming the voice of the everyday woman, a section has labelled her 'feminazi', misreading her fight for women's rights as an attack on the opposite sex. "I don't understand the term 'feminazi', but most people around us don't even know what feminism tweet, Roy wrote, “This is so beautiful and means. It stands for equal opportunities. heart wrenching. I can imagine what you We have only started exploring the might have felt while you were making it. Love different shades of women and their you.”Filmmaker Kunal Kohli also replied on heroism on screen. For decades, men senior Bachchan’s tweet. “One can only have bashed up villains; nobody imagine your pain sir. I still can’t over losing described them as 'male-Nazi'. Then why chintuji. Too big & too personal a loss for me is Thappad or any film that champions & so many of us. That’s how much he a woman's right and asserts her existence touched so many different people in so many seen as the work of a 'feminazi'? There ways,” he wrote. A day before, on April 29, Irrfan Khan it." breathed his last in Mumbai’s Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital, after battling with neuroendocrine cancer for two years.

Amitabh remembers Rishi and Irrfan Khan in emotional posts Moved by the demise of Rishi Kapoor and Irrfan Khan, Amitabh Bachchan paid them a musical tribute. For Kapoor, he posted a song sung by him for the movie 102 Not Out and, for Irrfan, he reshared the theme music of Piku.Sharing the lyrical version of a classic Bollywood melody “Waqt Ne Kiya”, which he recreated for his last movie with Rishi Kapoor, 102 Not Out, Big B wrote, “Waqt ne kiya kya haseen sitam ..
