If you Are Flipping Properties You May Be Creating a LARGE Tax Liability “It’s not what you make that matters, it is what you keep.” This old business adage is true, you can’t bank on your gross profits… but you sure can bank on your net after taxes. Sadly, though, many use this adage as a justification for operating in a grey area of business, especially in the tax planning world.

Let me state right here, just as I have for decades, the risks to playing in this grey area are NOT minimal (especially when you are misleading the CRA): the risks of being caught, especially now with huge government deficits, are dramatically increased, it is not if you will get caught trying to cheat on your taxes in real estate: it is when you will be.

As that is winding up, next on the radar seems to be the review and re-assessment of short term property transactions (including contract assignments and flips) as income and not as capital gains they were declared as. Gang Prevention Work Continues Amongst COVID Anti-gang youth workers have continued to support at-risk youth with modified services to meet the unique challenges that have emerged during the COVID pandemic. The In It Together program, which is part of Archway Community Services, seeks to disrupt the flow of youth into gangs through one-to-one interventions and working with their families. They support youth at risk of gang involvement due to family ties, suspected drug use or previous trauma. They also work with youth already criminally involved, on probation, or facing charges.

ABBOTSFORD BUSINESS COMMUNITY COALITION RAMPS UP #WHATLOCALSDO CAMPAIGN, ANNOUNCES SMALL BUSINESS GRANTS

T

he Abbotsford Business Community Coalition (ABCC) is ramping up its #WhatLocalsDo advertising and social media campaign, and sharing details of its Abbotsford Business Boost program to help independent local businesses with COVID-19 resiliency and recovery. A new video featuring local comedians Cliff Prang and Sunee Dhaliwal will launch on Friday, May 22nd - a sneak peek trailer is available and the final video will be available here.

“As we return to a new normal, our message is all about encouraging people to think local, act local, shop local, and explore local,“ said Katerina Anastasiadis, Executive Director of the Abbotsford Chamber of Commerce. “It’s about supporting each other - that’s what locals do.” Applications for the ABCC’s Emergency Relief Fund are now open. Created through financial contributions from ABCC members the Abbotsford Downtown Business Association, Abbotsford Chamber of Commerce, Abbotsford Tech District, as well as community contributors, the fund of-

fers grants of up to $2,500 to support immediate business operation needs as COVID-19 physical distancing measures are lifted. “We’re already seeing lot of interest in the Emergency Relief Fund and the wraparound programs we’ve put in place,” said Jennifer McEwan, Executive Director of the Abbotsford Downtown Business Association. “We think we’ll be able to keep growing the pool of available funds with the generous support of some big organizations that are pillars of the local business community.” ABCC has also launched a peer-topeer business mentorship program, connecting merchants with business peers in larger organizations and enabling businesses of different sizes to draw upon each other’s strengths. A Digital Pivot Initiative has also been rolled out as a free resource to merchants looking to expand their digital footprint and make their products and services available online. ABCC continues to champion Support Local BC, an initiative created to help local, independent businesses with cashflow during the COVID-19 pandemic and recovery by selling gift certificates for future use. Abbotsford Tech District, a member of the Coalition, is buying $5000 worth of food and beverage gift certificates, donating them to local charities and community organizations, and encouraging other businesses to step up if they can. “The road to recovery will be long, and it won’t be easy,” said Dave Sidhu, President of the Fraser Valley Indo Canadian Business Association. “But working together as a community will make a huge difference. That’s what locals do.”

What is the Civil Rights Tribunal and What Does it Mean for My ICBC Claim ? As you may be aware, the controversial “minor injury cap” which applies to BC motor vehicle accidents that occurred on or after April 1, 2019. It purports to limit recovery on damages for pain and suffering to $5,627 if you suffered certain types of “minor” injuries. The new BC motor vehicle accident law defines a minor injury as including injuries that range from bruising, cuts and sprains, all the way up to concussions, certain whiplash-associated disorders, TMJ disorder, and psychological conditions such as anxiety, PTSD, and depression. Who decides whether your injuries are minor, and what happens if you do not agree with that decision? What is the Civil Resolution Tribunal (CRT) and what does this mean for your ICBC claim? The outcome of the determination of the CRT can have a significant impact on the compensation you receive in your ICBC claim. There was another major change made to BC motor vehicle accident law when the minor injury cap was imposed: as of April 1, 2019, the Civil Resolution Tribunal (“CRT”) was given the responsibility of adjudicating many motor vehicle accident injury disputes in BC. That means that your ICBC claim may be determined not by the BC Supreme Court, but by the CRT, which now has the jurisdiction to decide: Whether your motor vehicle • accident injuries are “minor” or not; • Your entitlement to Part 7 Accident Benefits; • Liability for the accident (who is at fault for the accident); and

Mukhtiar Kaur Gill September 23, 1928 - July 13, 2020 In Loving Memory It is with great sadness the Gill Family announces the passing of Mukhtiar Kaur Gill lovingly referred to as Shahni, at the age of 91 years old. Mukhtiar Kaur was born in the village of Daudhar, Punjab, India. She went on to marry her soul mate Jagindar Singh Gill and started her family in Dhudhike, Punjab India. She immigrated to Canada in 1971 in Mission, BC where she began building a foundation for her family with her loving husband. In 1979, they settled on their farm in Abbotsford, BC where they began to build their life together. Mukhtiar Kaur was an extremely hard working; passionate, loving soul who thrived on interactions with her loved ones. All her family, friends and the people whom she touched along the way will fondly remember her. She was everyone’s Grandmother (Babay). Mukhtiar was predeceased by her husband Jaginder Singh Gill. She is survived by her son, Avtar (Ravinder) Gill and daughters Amarjit (Sukhcharan) Dhaliwal, Parmjit (Malkiat) Sidhu and Kamaljit Gill, along with their families including 12 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. A true matriarch in all that she did and everyone she touched. Our families throughout all generations will sadly miss Mukhtiar Kaur. We understand that so many of you would like to pay your respects to this incredible woman, but due to Covid-19 restrictions, kindly do not attend the private funeral service. You can have a clearer idea of the results or success that is possible with something you could have started out with 2 years ago. Anything that has gone through hold ups since late May can now move forward to early August. If you feel there are obligations that need to be dropped now is the time to take definite action.

There could be some frustration when it comes to money matters, especially if a past situation wasn’t properly dealt with. The need to communicate or do a lot of running around can step up from now to early August. Anything that has been held up or has not been clear can move forward. Avoid taking on too much though.

Attempting to enjoy yourself socially could be disrupted by the expectations of somebody else or restricted because of obligations connected to the needs of somebody else. A sense of being able to move forward when it comes to finances can result in less of a worry from now to early August. Avoid impulsive spending.

You can either move forward with personal decisions from now to early August or anything you have been attempting to make a decision on can become apparent. Something that requires other people to be involved could become clearer. What you would like from the situation in the long term could fall into place easily.

Health matters, not necessarily your own, could interfere with social plans that have already been put in place. You could be quite happy to isolate yourself and get on with work that has been put to one side for too long. There is much you can accomplish. Things will begin to go your way more from late July to early August.

Any situation involving you with a group of people that has experienced hold ups could now move forward. This week could be the beginning of a lot activity with other people. Don’t feel you need to be involved just because it is expected of you, especially if this will cause difficulty with responsibilities you must see to.

Having to move back to a situation you thought you had moved on from can cause some aggravation. It may seem that you get little choice right now. All you can do is move forward with decisions from now to early August that are connected to the responsibilities you are happy to accept. See what pans out by the end of the year.

A way forward when it comes to the future may become clearer from now to early August though it may be necessary to gather more information. This could be generated because of somebody else doubting your ideas. In the end though the detail and work involved will be up to you so you need to decide if you want this.

You need to be careful when it comes to your finances and anything expected or recommended through other people. If you feel you are being pushed into something you don’t want, especially if it will cost you money, don’t be afraid to put a hold on it. This may not be the best time to splurge out on a holiday either.

You can be very busy with other people. If they have been holding back when it comes to making a final decision on something, they will move forward from now to early August. If there is something you want to have done at home that requires other people to get involved now would be the time to move forward on that.

This is a good time to get moving when it comes to get on with the job of getting rid of things you have been thinking about for some time especially if this will make things easier for you on a daily basis. You could also make a decision to develop your fitness level or pay better attention to improving your eating habits.

The opportunity to involve yourself in things you enjoy could present itself perhaps in an area you had given up on or didn’t think would go ahead. This could bring you into contact with people you have not seen in a while or that have some sort of connection to situations you have been involved with in the past. Much to enjoy.
