The B.C. government is cancelling the carbon tax by introducing legislation to drop the rate to $0, effective Tuesday, April 1, 2025.
“British Columbians are doing everything they can to reduce their emissions. But people shouldn’t have to choose between climate action and being able to afford their bills,” said Premier David Eby. “That’s why we are eliminating the consumer carbon tax, which has become divisive at a time we need to be united. We will help people with costs and fight climate change by ensuring big polluters continue to pay, encouraging industry to innovate and giving British Columbians affordable options to make sustainable choices.”
The reduction of the tax to $0 is an immediate step to align B.C.’s carbon tax rate with the new federal carbon tax rate. The elimination of the carbon tax means people in British Columbia will no longer be required to pay the consumer carbon tax, taking approxi-

mately 17 cents per litre off the cost of fuel and approximately 15 cents per cubic metre for natural gas on their home heating bill.
The climate action tax credit, developed to help offset the impacts of the consumer carbon tax on people and families, will also be cancelled. The final payment will be distributed in April 2025.
“The carbon tax has been an important tool in B.C. for over a decade and half, but it has become too politically divisive and a distraction from the important issues we are tackling,” said Brenda Bailey, Minister of Finance. “While this is a significant shift for our province, we will offset the impact while focusing on growing the economy during these challenging economic times.”
Cancelling the tax and the credit will have an estimated impact of $1.99 billion in the coming fiscal year. The
Province will restructure programs funded by carbon tax revenue to minimize the impact on B.C.’s budget, while supporting people in British Columbia in achieving climate goals.
The Province will continue to ensure big polluters pay through the B.C. output-based carbon pricing system. The system supports decarbonization efforts, incentivizing industry to lower their emissions to avoid paying the tax.
“We remain committed to driving down emissions while making life more affordable,” said Adrian Dix, Minister of Energy and Climate Solutions. “We are continuing to invest in practical solutions, such as home heat

pump rebates for those who need them most and energy-efficiency upgrades, so people can lower their energy costs and reduce emissions without bearing an extra financial burden.”
The Province has made notable progress in promoting the adoption of zeroemission vehicles, expanding public charging infrastructure, and enhancing energy efficiency in homes and buildings. These efforts contribute to emission reductions, support economic growth by creating jobs in cleanenergy sectors and help lower energy costs for people in British Columbia.

Heat for the Streets! Toyota Corolla GR- Fast and Loud!
Auto review By Veeno Dewan
Toyota’s GR Corolla Hatchback is a serious performance hatchback named for the automaker’s Gazoo Racing Motorsports division, (GR). Its remit is outrageous performance in a small package - the very antithesis to the mainstream Corolla its is based on. The GR is expensive many thousands above a standard Corolla - a result of the complete reengineering from the normal Corolla. The body shell is super stiff and the floorplan altered to fit the All-Wheel Drive system. The suspension is also custom built for superior handling and all GR Corollas are assembled in a dedicated facility where many parts are assembled and fitted by hand. The engine is an exquisitely engineered 1.6L three-cylinder unit producing a stupendous 300 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. Adjustable suspension, performance drive modes and all kinds of performance goodies are standard.
Originally, only available with sixspeed manual transmission to define its sporty performance hatchback credentials, for 2025, the most important change is the availability of an 8-speed automatic transmission option and a slight boost in torque. The direct automatic transmission ( DAT) is offered as part of the new upper Premium trim line. Meanwhile, the engine has been retuned to 295 lb-ft of torque, compared to 273 lb-ft in the previous model. Other performance upgrades
include uprated suspension and front and rear limited-slip differentials as standard this year.
The powertrain specification is awesome for such a small car using Toyota’ rally developed GR Four AllWheel-Drive (AWD) system giving drivers a choice of selectable 60/40, 50/50, or 30/70 split torque power distribution to the front and rear wheels. The six-speed manual transmission has selectable rev-matching, while the new eight-speed automatic arrives with paddle shifters and an awesome launch control feature. Driver selectable All-wheel drive (is standard, with front and rear Torsen limited-slip differentials. A unique triple exhaust that’s designed to reduce backpressure for maximum power delivery finishes off the rear.
The Corolla GR arrives in two trim levels. The Core trim with as standard manual transmission for $47,915. The automatic transmission comes only in the Premium trim which is $58,137. The Core Grade has a colour keyed roof with arear lip spoiler. GR stamped side rockers, and wide-fender flares. On the inside, there is seating for five will and GR logoed fabric sport seats. As standard issue on the Core are features such as: an eightinch centre touchscreen with wireless phone connectivity, six speakers, heated sport seats, heated steering wheel, automatic climate control, and
a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. Additions and changes include a synthetic suede-wrapped steering wheel and shift lever. Otherwise, it is standard Corolla ambience with a quality feel, good ergonomics, and switch gear. There is practical interior storage and decent room for front occupants. While the rear seats are tight they are not oppressively so. The rear seats also fold for more cargo storage.
The Premium version (As Tested) adds a carbon fibre roof and power bulge hood, (Also available as an option package to the Core trim.) there is the Automatic transmission, a wireless charger, eight-speaker JBL audio system, suede seat trim, dual-zone climate control, and a head-up display. The Premium with its automatic transmission also has a new sub-radiator to enhance engine cooling.
On the road, The GR Corolla is exciting to drive with its low stance and super responsive engine and transmission combination. The handling and reflexes are quick as the 1.6-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine transmits power in linear fashion. There is even a launch control function to ensure the new 8-speed automatic’s
torque converter spins quicker for hard standing- start acceleration. Peak torque arrives at 3000-5500 rpm, with max horsepower coming at 6500 rpm. Handling is better as well thanks to a suspension trailing arm revision that sees better cornering entry and departure with minimum weight shift. Also tire squat under hard acceleration is also mitigated with revised rear dampers and a new sway bar. The exhilaration is also completed by the roar of the loud rasping exhaust note and the whooshing intake noise. Its a thrill for sure and the GR is extremely fast and satisfying to drive.
Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) economy figures state the automatic equipped GR is rated at: 12.1 city, 8.6 highway, and 10.5 combined. Do note, the performance engine requires the use of premium fuel to preserve its integrity and performance.
Downsides are few – the suspension is overly firm; the GR is expensive and is really a niche product that mostly performance drivers will fully appreciate. Highly recommended if big thrills in a small package is what you want- A future collectors cult car for sure! Wonderful.
2025 Toyota Corolla GR Premium. Priced from $58,137 plus freight and PDE. Price as tested – $60.628.

NDP: Stopping corporate landlords from buying up affordable homes and jacking up rent
On Friday, the NDP announced their plan to stop corporate landlords and speculators, like Mark Carney’s Brookfield, from buying up apartment buildings only to jack up the rents.
#1, 32056 SOUTH FRASERWAY (ABOVE MEDICAL CLINIC) CALL DR. SHVETA SAINI MBBS, MD, DHMHS (ONTARIO) PRACTICE SINCE 15 YEARS 604-304-2236
“People are getting hit from all sides,” said NDP candidate for Vancouver East Jenny Kwan “Trump’s tariffs will drive up costs, and in Vancouver, megacorporate landlords, like Brookfield, are buying up apartment buildings, renovicting people and then they give it the old ‘landlord special’. Slapping white paint on the walls and doubling the rent. People need someone who’s going to end this immediately.”
Under Mark Carney’s leadership in August 2023, Brookfield outlined a deliberate strategy to profit from high interest rates that were pricing working people out of the housing market. A plan his CEO described as an “opportunistic real estate [strategy] in order to take advantage of the stress in the market, which is our sweet spot.”
And it’s working: in Vancouver Brookfield owns properties including Hendry
Place, where a one-bedroom starts at $2895, almost $600 higher than the Vancouver average one-bedroom rent.
“Speculators and corporate landlords are winning, the system is built to help them, not you,” said Kwan. “We want to see that change, so that the system benefits you, not those at the top.
“Brookfield properties has rigged things to make piles of cash - and Mark Carney helped get them there. Last year they made $3.4 billion off of working people trying to pay their rent," added Kwan. "We can’t count on those benefiting from this system to stand up for people against corporate speculations-- Mark Carney ran this company until just a few weeks ago. But you can count on New Democrats who are fighting to make things better for tenants across the country.”
New Democrats have been clear: the federal government is helping fuel this crisis by giving bad corporate landlords access to cheap loans, mortgage insurance, and tax breaks—and that ends under an NDP government.
Recovery program opens, supports healing for people in northern B.C.
More people living with substance-use challenges now have access to treatment and recovery with the opening of the new Northern BC Therapeutic Community in Prince George.
The recovery program has 25 publicly funded treatment and recovery beds and opened on March 13, 2025, following building renovations and program updates.
“People living in B.C.’s northern communities need access to treatment and care as close to home as possible,” said Josie Osborne, Minister of Health. “As we expand services around the province, it is essential that people in remote communities can also connect with the right recovery options. These new beds in Prince George mean that more people will be able to access treatment and recovery services, while removing some of the significant barriers faced by people living in rural and remote communities.”
The Northern BC Therapeutic Community is located 30 kilometres southwest of Prince George on the former Baldy Hughes site. It provides a safe environment for individuals to build community while focusing on recovery from substance-use challenges, and equips participants with the tools needed to sustain long-term success in their post-care journeys.
“When people need support in their recovery journey, every barrier removed helps them get closer to reaching their goals,” said Jonny Morris, CEO, Canadian Mental Health Association of B.C. “The new publicly funded treatment and recovery beds will help people access the supports they need, while staying closer to home – closing the distance and removing the financial costs that could otherwise hold them back. We are grateful to work with
the Province of B.C. and Connective Support Society in providing these accessible, life-changing supports.”
The Therapeutic Community is operated by Connective, a community-based social services non-profit organization working throughout B.C. and Yukon to create safe, healthy and inclusive communities. Program stays will last between six and 12 months, with after-care services available for one year after program completion. This new holistic model focuses on rebuilding physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual well-being using personal and social responsibility within the recovery community as a vehicle for growth and development.
“As the toxic-drug crisis continues to cause tremendous harm in our communities, it is critical that we diversify the range of supports available for long-term recovery and stability,” said Mark Miller, CEO, Connective. “We are eager to offer this vital northern resource to those facing substanceuse challenges, and to contribute our experience in response to this urgent and under-served need.”
These 25 beds are part of the 180 publicly funded beds announced in January 2024 and surpasses that for a total of 190 beds. Since 2017, the Province has added more than 750 substanceuse beds, bringing the total number of publicly funded substance-use beds throughout B.C. to 3,778.
The Province is expanding treatment and recovery options in all regions of B.C. so more people can find the pathway to recovery that works for them. Adding bed-based services is one part of the government’s work to build up the entire continuum of mental-health and substance-use care for people to get the right support for them.

Jim Sinclair, who completed his term and retired from his position after serving as board chair since September 2017, said: “Health care systems across the country are facing big challenges right now – and Fraser Health is no exception. But I am very proud of the work we have accomplished together during my time as board chair over the past sevenand-a-half years.”
He added: “From navigating the COVID-19 pandemic to taking action to hire more health care workers and address current health system challenges and moving forward on true reconciliation with indigenous peoples, the Board has worked in partnership with our community partners, the Fraser Health executive, the Ministry of Health towards our shared goal of a responsive, resilient health system that will support Fraser Health communities for many years to come.”
Fraser Health said that Kang’s appointment will ensure continuity and stability for the organization as they recruit a new president and CEO. Kang has been on the Fraser Health Board of Directors since her appointment in September 2017.
Kang Said: “I am grateful for this opportunity to lead the Fraser Health Board of Directors as we embark on the next phase of our journey to strengthen the critical health services and supports Fraser Health delivers to commu-
She added: “Global health care worker shortages are impacting our communities and while we continue to hire hundreds more health care workers into Fraser Health, there is more work to do to build a system of care that reflects the communities we serve and that is there for people when they need it. In the coming weeks and months, the Board is focused on working with community partners to support health care workers, strengthening services for people, and recruiting a permanent president and CEO as quickly as possible.”
Fraser Health said Kang is passionate about transformative change that strengthens communities, deepens a resilient economy and protects the environment. With over 25 years of professional and community experience, including senior leadership roles in large, complex organizations, she brings strong governance and financial expertise to the table.
As a co-founding partner at Core Firm, a strategy and advisory firm focused on economic inclusion, sustainability and public-interest solutions, Kang helps organizations navigate complex challenges and drive systematic change.

Be cautious about what you bring to an end or the way in which you go about winding something up, especially if you think it will open up more choices. The situation will have to be revisited mid April next year. Other things would have changed by then. It might be wiser to let things take their own course right now.
Something that started off as a small thing when it comes to helping out somebody else that seems to keep on growing would be best dealt with now, especially if it is turning into a habit or interfering with your regular routines. It has probably taught you to take more notice of what is important to you, rather than getting distracted..
604-504-2359 Eqy 604-751-0220
New directions involving other people can be smooth running if things are done their way. While there might be a lot in common, their determination might clash with yours. If you have been attempting to come to an agreement, this might need to be left for now and revisited mid April as things will likely have changed by then.
Something is winding up on a personal level perhaps in ways you were not expecting that is generating thought of all sorts of possibilities in the long term. Someone can play a powerful role here. However it is to eventually settle will not become evident until January to April next year. Meanwhile just go with the flow.
You can have success in getting something out of the way that has been on your mind for a while but the energy just hasn’t been there. Not that you will feel overly energised just yet. It is more a realisation that time is running out. You know you will feel a lot better once this is done, especially if others have a good view of it.
Something needs to be put into place once and for all so that you know what needs to be spent rather than other things coming up all the time. Whatever you do now can create changes that may not be fully implemented until next year, between January and April. You need to be straightforward and practical with any discussions.
There can be a willingness to let something go that has been a personal priority but doesn’t fit well with someone else. It will be more important to establish underlying stability in situations involving others. This can be temporary as other opportunities to focus on your wishes will arise next year from January to April. Patience can pay off.
The New Moon this week occurs in your sign providing you with the opportunity to generate changed directions on a personal level. Anything that has not been heading in the direction you had hoped might be better let go right now. Becoming more practical can appeal to you, especially when it comes to stability with finances.
There can be new directions building up in the background that will provide the opportunity to put a stable foundation in place. This is likely tied into the decisions of somebody else and something may need to wind up so they can take the next step. There could be more than one stage of development attached to this as well.
It might be time to develop a new attitude when it comes to commitments or obligations in your life, especially if they affect your finances. If you have accepted things without thinking, you could recognise this has to stop. This can only happen when you take the time to analyse what you can realistically manage and follow through.
Changes in somebody else’s life may make you realise things are moving on and it will not be the same for you. This is encouraging you to think about what is important to you. It can actually be freeing you up to do so. This is a first stage. New people can come into your life, especially from January to April next year.
New possibilities in the long term can begin to feel more probable or realistic. This could leave behind a level of personal doubt or insecurity. This can be tied to you becoming more aware of what has been important for a long time but needs to be modified in some way for the future. The second stage can occur January to April next year.

B.C. Farmers Gain On-Demand Human Resources Support
LangleyandVictoria,BC/March 24, 2025– BritishColumbiafarmersandranchers willgaininvaluable human resource(HR) support, courtesy of a newinitiative delivered by AgSafe BC.
AgSafe andInvestmentAgricultureFoundation of BC (IAF) have heard from BC’s agriculture sector they don’t have the resources and support they need to effectivelydo HR. They heard BC producers need assistance when it comes to recruitment, retention, performance management, compensation, compliance, and more. Seeing an opportunity to fill the gapby working across partners, IAF proposed the BC Agriculture HR program to AgSafe. Building off an innovative program delivered by go2HR in the tourism industry; IAF was able to connect the program to AgSafe who work directly with farmers/employersandwerehearingtheneedin the sector for solid HR advice alongside the work they were
doing in the Agricultural Safety practices space.
TheBC AgricultureHuman Resources Advisory Service, inspired by a successfulprogram in the tourism and hospitality sector, willserveas an “HR on SpeedDial” fortheprovince’s agriculturalcommunity. Led by Project Manager Kaitlyn Janzen, who boasts extensive experience in agriculture and humanresources, ateam ofRegionalHR Consultantswill beavailable to agricultural producersforconsultations and on-demand assistance via telephone, email, and digital meetings.
The result is HR support services for farmers who are also employers. The initiative is funded by the Ministry of SocialDevelopment and Poverty Reduction, through the Canada-British Columbia Labour Market Agreement, as part of suite of Agricultural Labour initiatives delivered though IAF.
Background
A recent study by the Canadian AgriculturalHuman Resource Councilrevealed that British Columbia’s agriculture sector has the highest vacancy rate of any province at 12%, with over 4,800positions estimated to have gone unfilled in 20211.
In 2024, with the help of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food and stakeholders in the agriculture industry, IAF identified a gap in service for BC agriculture producers: Human Resourceknowledge and assistance.
Utilizing the recentlysecuredAgricultureandFood Workforce Development Initiative funds, the IAF Team identified a HR tool used in thetourism industry during Covid-19 delivered by go2HR.
Once the right tool was found, the IAF team knew there was an ideal organization positioned to collaborate with to deliverthe program – AgSafe BC. Hav-
ing worked with AgSafe to delivertheMentalHealth Supports Program, IAF was confident they were uniquely positioned to deliver BC AgricultureHuman Resources Advisory Service.
This project is supported by theAgriculture and Food Workforce Development Initiative; a fund designed to support BC’s agriculture industry to provide a stable and increasing food supply through targeted efforts to recruit and retain a sufficient workforce to meet the labour needs of the industry. Funding for this initiative has been provided by the Ministry of Social Development and Poverty ReductionthroughtheCanada-British ColumbiaLabour MarketAgreement. Theinitiative is delivered by IAF.
