With just a few days to go before Shen Yun graces the stage at Vancouver’s Queen Elizabeth Theatre, organizers say tickets to the renowned performance are selling fast.

Shen Yun has been playing in Vancouver since 2006 and is now one of the city’s most beloved and anticipated spectacles.Formed by Chinese artists living in the United States, its mission is to revive the Middle Kingdom’s rich 5,000-year-old culture.

The New York-based company has become a global phenomenon due to its authentic depiction of China’s traditional culture through music and

dance. Itcurrently has eight companies, each with its own orchestra, that tour simultaneously across four continents every year.

Shen Yun will begin its tour of Canada in March, playing in nine cities across the country. The company will play seven shows at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre from March 20–25.

Shen Yun features performances in classical Chinese dance, ethnic dances, and vocal soloists, all accompanied by a live orchestra that blends traditional Western and Chinese instruments. Vividly animated backdrops extend the stage, transporting audiences to another place and time.

Audience members often say they feel a sense of inspiration and hope after seeing Shen Yun. Its tour of Canada in 2023 drew many appreciative comments from audience members.

Poetic Justice Foundation's New Exhibit at Burnaby Village Museum Sheds Light on Caste Discrimination in Canada

The OVERCASTE exhibit explores stories of activism and resilience in the Dalit community

The Poetic Justice Foundation presents OVERCASTE, an unforgettable exhibit debuting at the Burnaby Village Museum this spring. Visitors to the Burnaby Village Museum will have the opportunity to experience this powerful new exhibition that features the stories of young Canadians and their struggles against caste discrimination.

The OVERCASTE exhibit sheds light on the pervasive existence of caste discrimination in Canada, challenging the myth that it doesn't exist in the country. Through personal anecdotes, historical context, and community narratives, it honors the Dalit experience, exposes the manifestations of caste-based prejudice in various spheres such as education, work, media, and relationships, and emphasizes the resilience and collective struggle of the community against systemic inequality.

“The caste system is a system of oppression based on class and the family you were born into that we must collectively and actively dismantle. It’s a form of violence and discrimination which is often hard to see which makes it particularly insidious. Even here in Canada, caste discrimination has kept some people in our communities marginalized and excluded — simply for the family they were born into,” says Jagmeet Singh, MP and Leader of Canada's New Democratic Party, “Dismantling inequality is core to my own values and as Canadians, it’s necessary that we eradicate inequality and injustice wherever we encounter it, and that includes casteism.”

Through a series of firsthand stories, captivating photographs capturing moments of struggle and resilience, engaging timelines illustrating historical milestones, and interactive displays inviting participation, the exhibit offers a visual journey into the Dalit experience in BC. Visitors can expect

to immerse themselves in the personal narratives shared by individuals, witnessing the challenges encountered in every aspect of their lives. With each display, the exhibit contextualizes these experiences within the broader framework of caste-based prejudice and inequality, encouraging visitors to actively engage with the material, gain insights, and reflect on their own roles in fostering change.

“In 1906, my great-grandfather Maya Ram Mahmi became the first recorded Dalit immigrant to Canada, seeking a brighter future and escape from the social and economic oppressions he faced in India. Yet, he and his descendants, including myself, have faced ongoing caste discrimination, an issue that persists over a century later.

Through the OVERCASTE exhibit, we aim to highlight the often-ignored problem of caste bias in Canada. This initiative seeks to amplify the Dalit Canadian narrative, which has been historically sidelined and ignored," says Anita Lal, Co-Curator of the exhibit and Co-Founder of the Poetic Justice Foundation. "OVERCASTE is designed to foster solidarity within the Punjabi community, encouraging selfreflection, listening to Dalit Canadians, and sparking meaningful dialogue to address caste-based prejudice locally.”

OVERCASTE will be open to the public during the spring break season at Burnaby Village Museum, which runs from March 18 to 28, 11:00 am4:30 pm daily.

Following its debut at the Burnaby Village Museum, OVERCASTE will become a travelling exhibit intended to spread awareness about the Dalit Canadian experience internationally. For more information on the Poetic Justice Foundation, please visit www. poeticjustice.foundation/

Downtown Abbotsford’s new cultural hub, Open Space, is dedicating its programming throughout the month of March to local women. The space will be featuring events and exhibits to increase opportunity for local women, female-identifying, and gender non-binary folk to showcase their work. "The Fraser Valley has countless talented women that too often go unnoticed" says Open Space Project Coordinator, Alison Chisholm. "We are opening our space to bring these women together and share their talents with the local community."

The Open Space Gallery will feature a Women In Art exhibit launching on March 9th, showcasing works curated by the Abbotsford Arts Council and Kariton Art Gallery, as well as community art pieces lead by Linda Klippenstein. Linda will also be hosting a paint workshop through a Wine and Paint Night on the evening of March 22th. Tickets to the Wine and Paint

include all necessary art supplies and glass of wine to make for an exciting night filled with creative energy. The eventwill be held for a 19+ age group.

Additional events throughout March include the regular monthly Improv Comedy Community Jams hosted by Very Very Improv on March 9th from 7:30-9pm. A new Ladies Comedy Workshop is being hosted March 23rd by local comedian Monique Bellamy, inviting female comics and creators to gather, create and perform in what is sure to be an evening of hilarity and mayhem. Additional weekday art creation spaces and craft events are available throughout the month. All ticket and event information is available at www.downtownabbotsford. com/open-space.

Open Space is located at 33765 Essendene Ave. Inquiries about the exhibits, events, and venue can be sent to Alison Chisholm at openspace@ downtownabbotsford.com

Mobile app, culturally appropriate services help families access justice

Families that are eligible to receive or pay family support will now find it easier to access resources with a new mobile app and a distinctions-based approach that will lower barriers to free services.

The BC Family Maintenance Agency (BCFMA) offers free services to help facilitate child or spousal support payments and provide financial stability for both sides of families going through separation or divorce. To meet the evolving needs of families, BCFMA has expanded its services to include a new mobile app and culturally appropriate services for Indigenous people.

“For the past 35 years, BCFMA has improved the lives of families throughout B.C. by supporting those navigating separation or divorce,” said Niki Sharma, Attorney General. “It’s still tough for single parents who are already juggling multiple roles, though, which is why the work BCFMA has done to make it easier for people to enrol and collect support payments will make a huge impact. The improved access means more people can use this important resource.”

On March 4, 2024, the BCFMA My Account mobile app was launched, the first family-maintenance mobile app in Canada. Designed based on feedback from clients, the app allows users to manage their case and stay up to date on payments. One of the key features is improving direct communication with the agency. Users can send and receive messages or use “request a callback” to prompt a client-services representative to call.

“We are very excited to announce the launch of our new mobile app,” said Joanne Hanson, chief executive officer, BCFMA. “The BCFMA My Account mobile app was designed with the modern needs of families in mind and provides users with a quick

and easy way to access their case information from their mobile devices.”

In addition, BCFMA has established communication with more than 40 Indigenous communities and governments, as well as social workers and payment workers, to develop a plan for offering more culturally appropriate services for families who self-identify as First Nations, Métis or Inuit. The result is a new Indigenous services delivery model led by a dedicated team. The distinctionsbased approach ensures that clients feel safe to speak about their cultural and personal history, including the impacts of residential schools on their family matters. Two community liaison positions have been created to support outreach and the agency is currently enrolling as many as 28 new Indigenous families each month.

“As we modify our services to better meet the needs of Indigenous clients and their communities, it is important that we make time to listen and learn,” said Adrienne Palmer, director of client services, BCFMA. “By working together, we can better identify any barriers clients may be facing and offer tailored supports and resources for navigating the family court system or personal challenges.”

BCFMA should also be able to offer more support to families that have cross-border child support matters, as the international Hague Convention on Child and Family Support came into force in British Columbia on March 1, 2024. The convention will make it easier for BCFMA to help families collect child-support payments when one parent or guardian lives abroad.

The Province and BCFMA are working to make it easier for families to access services that help them build stable, equitable lives for themselves and their children.

The

Talhan Training & Fitness

Atheletes Victorius at The BC Wrestling Championships

What inspired you to pursue wrestling, and how did you prepare for the BC Wrestling Championships?

The thing that Inspired me to pursue wrestling was a desire for physical fitness & health. I prepared for provincials by watching the video of previous matches, building the right mindset, correcting my mistakes, tripling down on my strengths and putting myself in all positions.

Can you share a memorable moment or match from the championships that stood out to you, and what made it special?

The match most memorable was my BC semi-final match when I realized how much better I had gotten. I had a bit of a rough start in my first match. My ability to bounce back and get in the zone was the key. And it clicked in the BC Semi finals for me.

Wrestling requires both physical and mental toughness. How do you stay focused and maintain a positive mindset during high-pressure competitions like the BC Wrestling Championships?

By being present, having believing in the work I have done. Keeping

my mind focused on the process vs the outcome. And taking it one match at a time.

In my matches I like to focus on control using enough emotion to help me but not enough for the emotions to take over.

As a youth athlete, what kind of support have you received from your coaches, teammates, and family throughout your wrestling journey, especially leading up to this championship event?

I have been lucky to have the most improvement-based and supportive coaches and training partners, my family gave me everything that would help me succeed.

Reflecting on your performance at the BC Wrestling Championships, what are your personal takeaways and goals for improvement as you continue to grow in the sport?

I can see the improvements that have been made however I know many places in my wrestling need improvement and will look forward to correcting them. I am just staying focused on the process and bettering myself.

Champions of Diversity Recognized at Fraser Valley Cultural Diversity Awards

Two Abbotsford recipients / Two Chilliwack recipients / One Hope organization / One Mission Organization

Nearly 400 guests attended the 21st annual Fraser Valley Cultural Diversity Awards on Thursday, March 7th at the Clarion Hotel & Conference Centre in Abbotsford.

Four organizations were recognized in the categories of diversity in marketing, effective human resource strategies, innovative initiative, and inclusive environment. Ishi Sharma was named the Youth Champion of Diversity while Zeeshan Khan received the Champion Diversity award.

Returning emcee Free Lee congratulated the 50+ champions of inclusion who were nominated and noted that “the 2024 nominees truly represent all areas of diversity, from gender equality to race, ethnicity, age, religion, sexual orientation, abilities and social economic background.”

Augusta Gladstone of the Kwakwaka'wakw Nation gave the land acknowledgement and performed her Uncle Frank’s song for survivors. She was also a nominee in the Adult Champion of Diversity category and shared, “when I think of the cultural diversity, I

think of cultural safety. We can’t reach that until it is safe for you to be you and me to be me.”

In his welcoming speech, Abbotsford Mayor Ross Siemens noted that Abbotsford is one of the most diverse

communities in Canada and said, “the variety of perspectives, experiences and conditions that are found here serve to enrich all of us.”

“There is a lot of the divisiveness and intolerance in our world, but events like this prove that we can use diversity as a uniting force.”

Kelly Khakh spoke on behalf of the Speaker Sponsor Prospera to introduce the keynote speaker Sally Armstrong an award-winning author, journalist and human rights activist who spoke virtually. Armstrong’s speech focussed on gender and women’s accomplishment on the eve of International Women’s Day. She spoke about writing a story on Kenyan women who forced a change in the way rape cases are treated with the help of Canadian organizations. She reminded attendees that “apathy is evil’ and that the term “innocent bystander is sometimes an oxymoron. People who do not inter-

vene when something is amiss gives tacit permission for injustice to continue.”

In her closing remarks, Manpreet Grewal, the Director of Multicultural and Immigrant Integration Services at Archway Community Services thanked the sponsors, production team and the organizing committee. “Thank you to everyone for making this possible. There's a chemistry which happens when everybody comes together.”

Since 2003, community members have nominated organizations and leaders that build inclusive and diverse communities in Abbotsford, Mission, Langley, Chilliwack, and now Hope. Archway Community Services presents the event in partnership with the Mission and Chilliwack Community Services as well as the Langley New Directions English Language School.

2024 Fraser Valley Cultural Diversity Awards Recipients

Zeeshan Khan, Champion of Diversity

Zeeshan Khan was recognized for his role in the development and leadership of various community projects including food hampers, meal distributions,

and more. He is also the co-founder of Streams Foundation which is a local volunteer-based nonprofit organization.

Khan’s daughter Rida and wife GulRukh Zeeshan accepted the award on his behalf. Rida Khan shared “We're incredibly proud of him for winning this award as well as just doing the work he does in our community. He's worked throughout the years to continue to bridge the gaps in our community and bring everyone together.”

Ishi Sharma, Youth Champion of Diversity

Ishi is a grade 12 student who has worked to create an inclusive environment through her leadership roles within Student Voice at Yale Secondary and establishment of the “EDI for Youth” awareness campaign.

In her acceptance speech she noted how far she has come personally over the years and thanked her fellow nominees “for inspiring people like me every single day. It's an honor to be in the same room as you all.”

Sparrow Community Care Society, Effective Human Resources Strategies

Sparrow Community Care Society runs BC’s first homeless shelter specifically for older adults and was recognized for their diverse staff group which allows them to better connect with their residents.

Executive Director Jesse Wegenast shared that diversity “is a prerequisite to excellence,” and “if you're not intentionally building a diverse staff, you're putting a hard ceiling on how excellent the work that you can do is.”

Tourism Mission, Innovative Initiative Tourism Mission was recognized for creating a more vibrant travel experience with their Enchroma Colorblind Initiative which loans free glasses.

“This award means a lot in our effort to try and make tourism more accessible for everyone to enjoy,” said Lindsay Steffich who accepted the award on behalf of the Tourism Mission team.

Hippie Mike Industries Inc., Inclusive Environment

Hippie Mike Industries is an indoor skate park in Hope whose mission is to create fully inclusive all ages events where

participants are able to learn from one another.

Noting that the town of Hope didn’t have a lot of skateboarders when he started, owner Mike Faux shared that “it wasn't about the skateboarding, it was about giving another place for people to enjoy together” and how he hopes to make the next generations “have it a little bit easier.”

Chilliwack Film Society, Diversity in Marketing

The Chilliwack Film Society is a nonprofit responsible for running the annual Chilliwack Independent Film Festival and the Abbotsford Film Festival. Their mission is to provide a platform for a diverse range of voices to be heard whilst also helping emerging filmmakers and artists get a start in the industry.

Those who missed the live show can watch it air on Sunday, March 17 at 8:00pm, and Sunday, March 31 at 8:00pm on Shaw Multicultural Channel 4 (and 901) Vancouver.

B.C. vineyards, orchards receive help to replant for changing climate

More B.C. farmers producing grapes, cherries, tree fruit and berries will receive support to replant their vineyards, farms and orchards to make them more resilient to climate change, strengthening the province’s economy and food security.

“There are few things better than locally grown fruit and locally crafted B.C. wine,” said Premier David Eby. “We’re taking action to support farmers who have been hit hard by a changing climate with a new task force and replant program, which will help about 1,000 more growers revitalize their farms and protect their businesses. The security of our food and our economy depend on the strength and resilience of our farmers.”

A new enhanced replant program will provide as much as $70 million in support to help producers replace damaged, diseased and lowproducing vines, plants and trees with climate-resilient varieties that produce in-demand, premium fruit.

“Our government is here for B.C. producers who are facing challenges from severe vine and orchard damage from extreme weather, as well as those impacted by pests, plant disease and changing consumer and market demand,” said Pam Alexis, Minister of Agriculture and Food. “This historic investment will help producers replant for a changing climate with more support than ever before, which will strengthen our economy and ensure people can enjoy B.C. fruit and wine into the future.”

The new funding builds on the $15-million Perennial Crop Renewal Program launched in spring 2023, which has helped more than 200 producers remove diseased and unproductive plants and replace them with higher quality crops.

planting guidelines to ensure replanted varieties have enhanced adaptability and performance in the face of climate change, pests, disease and market pressures. Producers will make replant choices based on the best available agro-

JMC Farms in Chilliwack received $70,000 to remove 14 acres of Elliot blueberry plants infected by scorch virus and revitalize the soil to prepare for replanting.

“The crop-renewal program was easy to apply for and allowed our farm to avoid a serious financial burden from the removal of our blueberry plants,” said Marc Dalton, owner and blueberry farmer, JMC Farms. “The program helped our farm to be set up so we could adjust to changing market and climate conditions and allow us to be successful in the future. I am pleased to see the program will be expanded to include more replant costs since it provides good value to support farmers.”

Government staff will work with industry associations to develop

nomic science to ensure they can handle extreme-weather events. Application information will be made available as soon as the guidelines are established.

As part of this investment, government is also establishing a B.C. wine-grape sector task force to develop a research and varietal road map for an economically viable B.C. wine-grape industry. The task force will run for two years and provide practical recommendations to producers and the industry about how to remain profitable and resilient. It will be comprised of Canadian and international experts with members anticipated to be identified this year.

“Minister Alexis’s announcement today is confirmation of this government’s commitment to resiliency

support for B.C. wine growers,” said Miles Prodan, president and CEO, Wine Growers BC. “The ongoing climate change effects on B.C. farmers, highlighted by recent freeze events, is real and directly impacts individuals and families that make up our industry. We look forward to working with the ministry to ensure B.C. vineyards come back better than ever to continue to produce the quality wine consumers have come to expect and that the B.C. wine industry continues to be a significant driver for the B.C. economy.”

Additionally, the Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General is working with manufacturers, with a specific focus on wineries, to support better experiences for visitors and promote tourism. In response to industry feedback, the Province is working to implement a suite of policy changes to enhance visitor experiences at wineries and other liquor-manufacturing sites in time for the summer. This work was informed by in-person visits to more than 30 liquor manufacturers.

“Our government remains committed to partnering with B.C. wineries and grape growers to guarantee the long-term sustainability and success of an industry that forms a fundamental part of the province,” said Roly Russell, Parliamentary Secretary for Rural Development. “We know what a difficult time the last few years have been. These improvements for the sector will help give our B.C. wineries more flexibility to deliver the tailored and world-class visitor experience that they provide.”

After the pressure you have likely experienced since the year began, you are now moving into a period to 23rd March where you can work out what needs to become your main priority in life. You could make decisions this week you had not planned but suddenly realise are necessary, based on what you don’t want to do anymore.

Pressure from the expectations of somebody else that has been upon since the year began will be released, giving you a sense of freedom. This can open up all sorts of new possibilities where the future is concerned, which can include looking at possibilities you could only dream about before. Focus on this to late March.

New directions can take shape in your life when it comes to other people, either those you know or somebody new. They will be determined when it comes to their own agenda and you need to be careful about the level of commitment or responsibility you take on. Those in business could be very busy to late March.

Be satisfied with whatever you have managed to organise and put in place since the year began. It is time to relax and involve yourself in some pleasurable activities up to 23rd March. The way somebody else deals with their life might be a good example to follow, especially if you realise you have become too serious of late.

There can be a lot to think or communicate about from now to late March which could stem from new information coming your way right now. Be mindful of what you can reasonably manage because something small asked of you could turn out to have a lot more work attached than is obvious. Be across the detail – ask questions.

With Mars entering your sign until 23rd March you will begin a new 2 year cycle but this one is like no other you have experienced so far in life. The New Moon has also just taken place in your sign, so it is all about new beginnings. For some this may mean beginning to alter your attitude to things that can’t be changed, which oddly enough could make you feel a new person.

New responsibilities could come your way which might be something you have been aiming for in a work situation but this could also take place on a personal level. There could be a lot more to this than is initially presented. Be mindful of what you are prepared to take on from now to late March, so to avoid getting bogged down.

Any challenges you may have had to deal with from somebody else since the beginning of the year may now become less obvious to 23rd March. Their determination to either do things or have things their way won’t waver. They could just be less open. You will have support elsewhere but keep your wits about you.

More pleasurable activities or a desire to relax since the year began will wind up now. Something may have changed as well when it comes to future goals which will now require some proper focus to get organised up to late March. This could also bring changes to your usual routines, which might take a while to get used to.

From now to 23rd March you could become more certain about what needs to be put in place for ongoing security when it comes to any changes that could have taken place since mid October. This could involve home and family but also any other area of life that is important to you. Focus on this step involving the next 2 years.

Your finances come under focus to late March. This would be a good time to make any adjustments to loans but be mindful of not committing yourself to anything that could become difficult to manage later. This could also be favourable for getting a job, changing jobs or receiving an increase in pay. Don’t be tempted to waste it though.

You will need a lot of patience to 23rd March, especially with any situations that seem out of your control. More information might be needed so that you can eventually move forward without hindrance. A possible new direction may begin to develop but exactly how that will play out could take a month to fully emerge.
