More mental-health, addiction support coming for South Asian people
South Asian people and their families living with mental-health and addictions challenges in the Lower Mainland will have access to more culturally relevant supports.
“When people make the brave decision to reach out for help, language and culture shouldn’t be a roadblock to get the support they need,” said Jennifer Whiteside, Minister of Mental Health and Addictions. “We know that culturally relevant support is essential in guiding people through their wellness journey. That’s why our government is investing in community organizations, like the South Asian Community Hub, to build the services that work for people.”
The provincial government has provided $100,000 to fund mental-health and substance-use programming for South Asian people in the Greater Vancouver area. The new funding
will support three part-time outreach workers, as well as people with lived experience who will engage with South Asians who are homeless or at risk of being homeless.
Outreach workers will connect people and families with wraparound services and resources, such as food banks, income and housing supports, counselling, home detox programs and medical services. These services are expected to support approximately 50 to 75 people who use drugs and another 150 to 200 members of their families.
“South Asian Community Hub outreach workers will develop relationships with these families that are built on respect, trust and cultural safety in their first language,” said Gary Thandi, board member, South Asian Community Hub (SACH). “Too often these families are not aware of how

to access financial aid and health and mental-health resources, as well as how to access harm-reduction supplies, detox or treatment. Through sustained, respectful and culturally responsive relationships, SACH outreach workers will ensure these families receive the types of support they need.”
Outreach workers will also attend community meetings that focus on addiction, mental health and home-
lessness, and create a report that outlines ways to effectively engage with South Asian people experiencing these challenges.
Enhancing supports for people living with mental-health and addiction challenges is an integral part of A Pathway to Hope, B.C.’s road map for building a comprehensive system of mental-health and addiction care for British Columbians.

HAPPY CANADA DAY
Are your sore joints trying to tell you something?
(NC) We all feel aches and pains from time to time. But if you often feel stiffness, swelling or pain in the knees, hips or other joints – don’t brush it off. Research suggests there could be as many Canadians living with undiagnosed arthritis as there are with the diagnosis. It is important to recognize early signs of the disease because the condition can have a dramatic impact on your life, bringing pain, fatigue and restricted mobility.
“Simply put, early action can lead to early relief,” says Dr. Sian Bevan, chief
science officer at Arthritis Society Canada. “Even young Canadians shouldn’t ignore persistent stiffness and pain. This disease does not discriminate and can strike at any age.”
Maintaining a healthy weight, keeping active and eating a balanced diet can all help relieve pain and slow joint degeneration.
Check your symptoms and learn how you can manage joint pain at arthritis. ca/symptomchecker.

Are you at risk for a heat-related illness?
(NC) Let’s face it, a changing climate can make heat waves longer and more intense. And extreme heat can be dangerous for everyone.
Heat illnesses such as heat exhaustion or heat stroke can rapidly evolve into life-threatening emergencies.
Most at-risk are people with breathing difficulties like asthma, or existing health conditions like kidney or heart issues, as well as Parkinson’s disease.
Really hot temperatures are also dangerous for older adults, young children and pregnant people. If you have a chronic condition or take medication, you should speak with a health-care provider about your risks in the heat.
Even if you’re fit and healthy, heat can be dangerous for anyone exercising or doing physical activity inside or out. Hot temperatures make it more difficult for our bodies to sweat and cool off. Physical activity can raise your body temperature faster, leading to
Archway Anti-Gang Program at Risk of Closure Again
In It Together (IIT), a gang and crime prevention program for youth run by Archway Community Services, is at risk of closing its doors again after its government funding ended.
Since 2018, when a 5-year federal grant from the Ministry of Public Safety ended, the program has struggled to secure consistent and sustainable funding. Provincial funding allowed the program to stay open from 2019 to 2022 but at a significantly reduced rate. United Way of BC also provided large grants that that helped maintain services, especially between funding cycles.
“It’s been a constant struggle to secure sustainable funding for this vital prevention work,” said Wanda Phillips, an IIT Supervisor. “It’s disappointing, especially considering the high need for crime-diversion programs for youth in Abbotsford.”
In It Together seeks to disrupt the flow of youth into gangs, crime and negative lifestyles through one-toone interventions and working with their families. IIT uses a youthcentred approach which allows youth to have a voice and create goals for multiple areas of their life.
Archway staff support youth at risk of gang or crime involvement due to family ties, suspected drug use or previous trauma. They also work with youth already criminally involved, on probation, or facing charges.
“Sometimes youth can’t see a positive path forward without some help,” said Phillips.
Youth Probation Officer, Julie Rushton shares that she “can see the truly amazing benefit that these youth have derived from having a healthy relationship with such positive mentors.”

problems when the heat makes it hard to cool down.
People who live alone or are socially isolated are also at a greater risk of heat related illness because early signs of heat illness can rapidly evolve into life-threatening emergencies, and there may not be anyone around them to notice that they may need help. People with pre-existing mental illnesses may also be more at risk to heat.
Whether you’re at high risk or not, it’s a good idea to arrange regular checkins with family, friends and neighbours during a heat wave to make sure everyone is okay. Offer to take them to a cool place and keep an eye out for any signs of illness like confusion, dizziness or swelling. If severe heat-related illness is suspected, with symptoms such as fainting, disorientation, vomiting or having difficulty speaking, call 911 immediately.

What is RSV? Why older Canadians need to know about it
(NC) Of all the things you can get sick with, respiratory syncytial virus –known as RSV – might not be top of mind. But it’s an important one to be aware of, especially for older adults.
The common, highly contagious virus is sometimes perceived as a bug that children pick up in daycare or other group settings and typically presents itself similar to a cold or flu. However, RSV can make anyone sick, and older adults are among those at increased risk for serious infection. In fact, most deaths attributed to RSV occur in adults 65 and older.
Underlying conditions common in adults such as diabetes and lung or heart disease, can increase the risk of serious effects from RSV, but even those without chronic conditions are more vulnerable to infections and health complications than younger people. This is because of the natural decline in how well our immune system functions as we age.
The immune system – like our vision and metabolism – typically peaks
in young adulthood and then starts a slow and steady decline, which leaves older adults more susceptible to infections and health complications. While preventative options for RSV are in development, there’s currently no vaccine or specific treatment available in Canada for adults. Further, immunity gained from previous exposure to RSV is short-lived, making it possible to catch the virus again and again.
Without vaccines or treatment, practicing general infection control measures to avoid it can help. Washing your hands frequently, not touching your face, covering your coughs and sneezes in public, regularly disinfecting surfaces you touch often and avoiding time spent close to anyone who is ill are all things you can do to help reduce your risk

Supporting sustainable cities and communities
(NC) The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) aim to free the world from hunger, poverty and inequity while tackling the challenges of climate change. There are 17 SDGs with number 11 focused on making cities and communities more sustainable.
Well cared-for greenspaces in urban areas help make cities beautiful, encourage biodiversity and contribute to healthy communities. Healthy urban greenspaces offer a range of benefits for people, including providing food and habitat for wildlife, producing clean oxygen, capturing carbon, reducing the warming effects of hard surfaces and creating
outdoor nature spaces for people to enjoy.
Unfortunately, these greenspaces can come sometimes come under threat from pests. For example, the infamous dandelion multiplies quickly and can take over lawns and sports fields if left unchecked.
The invasive emerald ash borer, a wood-boring beetle, is responsible for wiping out millions of trees in Canada. Other invasive species, like giant hogweed, can make walking trails and other recreational areas less safe.
“In order to keep our cities and communities sustainable, land managers and homeowners should have access to necessary tools to control things

What all Canadians should know about rising rates of kidney disease
(NC) Let’s debunk a myth about kidney disease: it does not only affect people with high-risk factors such as diabetes and high blood pressure. It can affect people who seem otherwise perfectly healthy and fit, including children and teens.
It’s estimated that nearly four million Canadians suffer from kidney disease, and about 4,000 die from it annually.
Because kidney disease can progress without any noticeable symptoms, many Canadians are unaware they have any issues until permanent
damage has occurred and life-saving treatment is necessary.
For those in later stages of the disease, dialysis is the go-to treatment. It often leaves patients and families physically and emotionally overwhelmed. Dialysis can involve four to six hours of treatment, three to six days per week for the rest of the patient’s life, often with distressing side effects. This extensive treatment also uses significant resources and dollars from the health care system.
But dialysis is just a bridge to help people get to the best treatment op-
tion: a donor kidney. Almost 80 per cent of Canadians on the waiting list for an organ transplant are waiting for a kidney. Currently, wait times for kidneys from deceased donors are four years or more, meaning most patients die before receiving a transplant.
However, there is a life-saving alternative: living organ donors. You do not need to be related to the recipient to be a match. If you are healthy enough, you could be a match for a neighbour, friend or stranger.
If you have a medical condition that increases your risk of kidney disease, speak to your doctor about monitoring your kidney function. Find more information about kidney disease and living organ donation at kidneyalliance.ca.

2023 MARKS CANADA’S 156TH BIRTHDAY.
It is a time for celebration, but also the perfect time to reflect on how privileged we are to live in an independent, glorious, and growing nation. It is time to think about the heritage of our indigenous communities and the contributions they have made and continue to make in leading our country to prosperity.
As we gather with Canadians from coast to coast to coast to celebrate our great nation, I wish all Abbotsford citizens a very Happy Canada Day!

Archway Anti-Gang Program at Risk of Closure Again
Youth are paired with a support worker with a similar background where possible and the South Asian Community Resource Office (SACRO) side of the IIT program focusses on South Asian youth and their families.
“SACRO provides vital support to South Asian youth and their families, particularly in Abbotsford where the risks of recruitment and other negative influences are high,” said Pavan Jawanda, a Social Worker with the Abbotsford Youth Team.
Since the program began in 2013, staff have provided prevention, intervention and re-entry support for more than 1,500 at-risk youth and their family members.
“Organized crime and gangs are ongoing issues that need attention and resources where youth are offered a path away from organized crime,” said Manpreet Sarai, SACRO Supervisor. “Archway wants to keep being part of the solution and we know that our In It Together program has seen consistent results and changed lives.”
A Project Impact evaluation showed that youth participants had an 89% reduction in criminal activity and substantially less substance use.
IIT works with youth as young as 11 and up to age 25. Chief Dan George Middle School Counsellor, Jason Hawkins says middle school is a “critical time that we see students start to make positive and negative decisions that can have significant impact on their high school years and beyond.
“I have seen kids that feel utterly disenfranchised from their school community feel seen for the first time. Those bonds are absolutely crucial for kids when their only other option is gang involvement and/or criminal activity.”
While the current government funding has ended, Archway staff aren’t ready to abandon the high-risk youth in their program. They’re referring clients to other Archway services where possible and keeping a skeleton crew while they pursue other
avenues for government funding.
IIT is currently supporting 60 youth, with another 20 on the waitlist. 150 youth received IIT services in the last fiscal year.
Ben Vegt is a Guardianship Social Worker though the Fraser Valley Aboriginal Children and Family Services Society. He says there are very few outreach workers equipped to deal with high-risk youth in Abbotsford and worries what will happen if the program shuts down.
I know firsthand that there are life-or death consequences when we don’t have people looking out for these particular youth. I am afraid of what could happen without our IIT workers.”
IIT staff encourage those concerned about community safety to contact their elected officials and voice their support for this crucial program for youth.

Canada Day: Celebrating the Rich History and Vibrant Spirit of a Nation
As the summer sun paints the sky with hues of red and white, Canadians across the Great White North prepare to celebrate Canada Day, a cherished national holiday that commemorates the birth of a nation.
On this day, Canada proudly reflects on its rich history, diverse culture, and unwavering spirit of unity. From coast to coast, Canadians come together to revel in the past, embrace the present, and envision a brighter future.
The roots of Canada Day can be traced back to July 1st, 1867, when the British North America Act was enacted, uniting the colonies of Canada, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia into a single dominion within the British Empire. This historic milestone laid the foundation for a nation that would flourish into one of the most prosperous and inclusive countries in the world.
Canada’s journey from colony to nation has been marked by significant milestones. Over the years, the country has diligently worked towards building a society that celebrates diversity, upholds democratic values, and em-
braces multiculturalism. The adoption of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms in 1982 further solidified Canada’s commitment to equality, justice, and human rights.
On Canada Day, the nation takes pride in its cultural mosaic, where people from various backgrounds and traditions come together in harmony. Festivities are held in every corner of the country, both in bustling cities and tranquil towns, offering something for everyone.
The nation’s capital, Ottawa, becomes the heart of the celebrations, attracting thousands of Canadians and visitors from around the world. Parliament Hill, adorned with flags and surrounded by the majestic beauty of the Rideau Canal, becomes a focal point of national pride. The day starts with a ceremonial flag-raising ceremony and is followed by live performances from talented musicians, captivating parades, and breathtaking fireworks illuminating the night sky.
However, the spirit of Canada Day extends far beyond Ottawa. Communi-
ties from coast to coast organize a myriad of events, ranging from cultural festivals to street parties, family picnics, and sports competitions. Canadians proudly display their patriotism by adorning themselves in red and white, the colors of the national flag, and donning symbolic maple leaf accessories.
In addition to the jubilant festivities, Canada Day serves as an opportunity for introspection and gratitude. It is a time to acknowledge the sacrifices made by those who came before us and to honor the contributions of Indigenous peoples, whose ancestral lands form the bedrock of this nation. Many communities incorporate Indigenous ceremonies and teachings into their celebrations, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of the land’s original stewards.
As Canada celebrates its 156th birthday, it continues to embrace the challenges and opportunities of the future. The nation strives to build a sustainable future, address social inequalities, and work towards reconciliation with Indigenous communities. Canada Day serves as a reminder of the collective responsibility of all Canadians to shape a brighter and more inclusive society for generations to come.
So, as the echoes of “O Canada” fill the air, let us raise our voices in unison, honoring the past and celebrating the present. Happy Canada Day, a day to commemorate the spirit of unity, diversity, and resilience that defines this great nation.

3 simple ways to keep your family healthy
(NC) Everyone in your life can benefit from you taking care of your mind and body Whether you’re young, old or in between, there are plenty of things you can do to lower your risk for many illnesses for both you and your loved ones and everyone in your community. Here are some tips for you and your whole family to follow: Practice healthy habits. The building blocks of good health include getting enough sleep every day, fuelling your
body with a balanced diet and exercising regularly. It’s easy to get off track sometimes, but by incorporating small changes into your daily routine, such as drinking more water or going on daily walks, you can improve your health.
Keep up with medical visits. Whether it’s a follow-up with a dermatologist to check on your child’s eczema, your own cardiologist to regulate your high blood pressure, or the annual visit to
the veterinarian, make sure you book – and keep – your family’s medical appointments. This can often stop a small issue from becoming a major concern.
Help stop the spread of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). AMR happens when bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites adapt and make medications that treat them less effective, or not effective at all. This means the drugs can no longer properly treat infections
in animals and humans. Responsible use of antimicrobial medications, like using them only when needed and as prescribed by a health professional, is one of the keys to reduce the problem of AMR.

viruses. This resilience built in youth gradually declines until around age 50, when the risk of infection and more serious complications starts to be more noticeable. As a result of our naturally weakening immune systems, older adults are more likely to face severe symptoms and potential hospitalization from infections that our younger selves could more easily fight off.
Here are three ailments you should have on your radar as you age:
Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV)

cine or treatment for RSV in adults, but regularly washing your hands, disinfecting surfaces that are touched often, and avoiding close contact with people who are sick can help reduce your risk.
Shingles
Shingles is a viral infection that typically causes a painful rash on one side of the body or face. It’s caused by the same virus that gives us chickenpox. If you had chickenpox in the past, the virus remains dormant in your body and can reactivate later in life
pulmonary disease (COPD)
COPD is a lung disease that causes a narrowing of the airways and can progress slowly over a number of years, with most people diagnosed over the age of 40. Smoking is the leading cause of developing COPD, but there are other risk factors including family history and exposure to air pollutants.
While the cause of COPD isn’t related to immune function, people living with COPD can suffer flare ups due
to common respiratory viruses such as a cold, the flu or RSV, which can worsen their condition. Although there is no cure for COPD, there are treatment options including medication and lifestyle changes that can help to support overall quality of life. Additionally, frequent hand washing and getting your annual vaccinations can help to manage symptoms and potential flare ups.

The idea is to help these families get back on their feet : Sonu Sood
A week on, the families of the victims and injured are grappling with the repercussions of the Odisha train tragedy that took place when the Coromandel Express derailed near Balasore and collided with two more trains, claiming more than 280 lives and leaving 900 injured. At a time like this when no effort is too small and no contribution too big, actorproducer Sonu Sood has stepped forward to support the affected families. his non-profit organisation, Sood Charity Foundation, launched a helpline for the affected. Sood shares, “After they message us on the helpline number, we will call them, get their details and [understand] their problems. We have also been in touch with the concerned authorities, and are procuring the details of all patients who are injured.” Rebuilding the lives of those who have lost their loved ones, in one of the worst train accidents in India, will be a Herculean task. Recognising this, Sood says that his organisation will focus on two areas — employment and education. “We have been hearing so many stories about breadwinners losing their lives. Who will take care of their families? The idea is to help these families get back on their feet. We will help them set up small businesses, and provide employment. We will also take care of their children’s education, and their elderly parents.”
Deepika had a crush on Arjun
A ctress Deepika Padukone is now a global name. From working with A-lister actors in Hindi film industry as well as Hollywood, she had also graced red carpets at Met Gala, Cannes and Oscars. However, the actress made it big in the Hindi film industry with the film Om Shanti Om along with Shah Rukh Khan and Arjun Rampal. Her ‘ek chutki sindoor’ dialogue is still quite famous among the audience. One of the fan pages ‘deepikaforlife’ shared an old video on Instagram, where a young Deepika could be seen getting asked by an interviewer whether it was difficult
or challenging to shoot those violent scenes in Om Shanti Om with Arjun Rampal. To that, the actress shared, “I couldn’t quite digest the fact that Arjun was doing this to me because he is one of the most goodlooking men I have ever seen. And I have had this huge crush on him, so more than anything but during shooting, I would just keep looking at him.” Deepika was last seen in Pathaan and will be seen next in Project K and Fighter.
Sayani used to sit in gay bars every day
Veteran actress Rekha has a secret talent. She likes to sketch with charcoal, director of the television show Ghum Hain Kisikey Pyaar Meiin, Siddharth Jenna has revealed. Sharing his experience of directing Rekha for the promo, Siddharth Jenna shared, “I was super excited and elated when I got to know that I am supposed to direct Rekhaji. It has been an absolute pleasure to work with Rekhaji. She is what she is
because of her discipline, passion, punctuality, and hunger to give more than 100 per cent in all her performances.” He called Rekha, a director’s dream actress, and learnt from her that if one gives their heart and soul to what they do, good things will follow. He further mentioned: “While we had a painting sequence in the scene, she was having fun doing some interesting strokes with the brush on the canvas. I thought those were some professional strokes. I asked her if she paints, and she nodded a ‘no’ with a smile. Then she revealed that she loves to sketch with charcoal.”
A ctor Sayani Gupta feels glad to see that Indian audience has evolved over the years and started negating the stigma around LGBTQIA+ content in films and shows.
However, she is quick to mention that she didn’t not care about the acceptance of the audience when she played actor Kalki Koechlin’s love interest in Margarita With A Straw (2013). On whether she did any additional research or preparation to play a homosexual character, Sayani reveals, “I went to New York and I used to go and sit in gay bars every day. I did it for two weeks and it was very weird. It was very eye opening for me and a bit of a new thing. There were things that I was seeing and learning for the first time. It was extremely educational, not just in terms of what is possible, but how free the
world can be. We as people have to be empathetic and mindful of becoming more and more inclusive.” Looking back, the actor is somewhat happy to see things in the last one decade since her film released. “Nowadays, the younger as well as the older generation is becoming much more aware, open, and inclusive. We are walking in the right direction, we haven’t started running yet. But walking is important so you can run,” the actor shares metaphorically.
‘I WAS A DRUG ADDICT AND ILL-TEMPERED’
Actress Sobhita Dhulipala, who is seen playing a variety of roles in various Indian entertainment industries and platforms, is also an established model in reality, and now her personal life has come under scanner, especially after a couple of pictures of her with Naga Chaitanya were out on the internet last year. Speculation is rife that the duo will get married soon. Speaking to a media house about her relationship, she reportedly said that she did not want to get disturbed by revealing her personal life to the public, as that would take the focus away from her professional work. She also stated that even people do not want to know about her life, and she added that the public will not know if she hides something from them. Hence, she prefers keeping her media interactions limited to her accomplishments and film projects rather than talking about her personal life. Moreover, on asking about her ideal partner, she said that she wants someone who is grounded and close to the earth and has the understanding that life is short and we will all go in a short span.
Naseeruddin Shah, who has been married to Ratna Pathak for more than four decades now, recently opened up about her family’s denial of their marriage. The Tashkent Files actor recalled that Ratna’s parents were against him marrying the actress because of his 'ill-temper, drug-addiction and a broken marriage'. He elaborated during one of his recent interviews and said, “We did not live together, we were courting. I
courted her for seven years before marriage. Her parents were against it, as I was a drug addict, ill-tempered and married before, but she did not pay any heed to that.” It was love at first sight for Naseer, he further revealed. “I took to Ratna right away... the moment I saw her. I had done my first film at the time when we were introduced. She was working in a Satyadev Dubey play and I had done one film. It just felt like I’d like to know this person. She also liked what she saw. It has been a great blessing. We stood by each other through thick and thin, in fact she stood by me through very difficult and very good times,” concluded Naseer.
