Fees capped for food delivery services

To help support B.C. restaurants, this temporary cap on food delivery fees “Local restaurants and businesses is further action our government has play a vital role in our communities, taken to aid local restaurants and keep and they have experienced a signifi- more British Columbians employed.” The EPA order, which was made on Dec. 22, 2020, will be in place until three months after the provincial state of emergency is lifted.

cant decline in sales and traffic due to the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Mike Farnworth, Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General. “Capping food service delivery fees is another way our government is providing immediate relief to our local businesses to ensure they can focus on retaining staff and keeping their business running.” An Emergency Program Act (EPA) order has been created to place a temporary cap on fees charged to restaurants from food delivery companies to 15%. An additional cap of 5% is also included for other related fees associated with use of the service, such as online ordering and processing fees. This will ensure that companies cannot shift their delivery costs to other fees.

Following consultation with stakeholders, including meetings with Adam Walker, Parliamentary Secretary for the New Economy, the Province has ensured the order will exempt small delivery service businesses that are often locally based. The EPA order will also ensure that delivery companies cannot reduce compensation or retain gratuities from their drivers, allowing workers to be paid their regular wages. “In consultations, I was encouraged to hear from food delivery companies who expressed support for a fee cap that has no impact on driver wages,” Walker said. “During this time, we all understand the need to strike a balance between supporting businesses in the new economy while still ensuring that delivery drivers are fairly compensated for the work they do.”

“The pandemic has had a significant impact on the restaurant industry, The EPA order will be implemented leaving many owners to find safe and on Sunday, Dec. 27, 2020, to allow sustainable ways to keep their busi- companies to adjust to the new rules. PAGE 6

COVID-19 and arthritis: what you need to know (NC) It’s not clear whether having arthritis makes you more susceptible to a coronavirus infection. But much like the seasonal flu, older adults and people with autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis may be more likely to get seriously sick if they do become infected. “The main concern isn’t the virus itself, but secondary bacterial infection and other complications that may arise when your body’s defenses are in a weakened state,” explains Trish Barbato, president and CEO of the Arthritis Society. Six million Canadians – about one in five adults – live with arthritis, so the risks of COVID-19 are profound. If you have arthritis, it’s critical to take precautions now while researchers continue their work on finding a vaccine.

tionally, it is recommended that you get your vaccinations updated, including seasonal influenza, pneumococcal and pertussis vaccines. These vaccines won’t prevent COVID-19, but could lessen secondary infection and will prevent illnesses that could resemble it. Some inflammatory arthritis medications suppress the immune system, which may make you more vulnerable to infection. But for most people with arthritis in our country, there is no need to stop your medications as the risk of contracting the virus remains low.

As always, consult your doctor or Follow the standard precautions of rheumatologist about any change in maintaining physical distance, wear- your health or any questions about ing a mask when you cannot do so, your medications. and practicing good hygiene. 'I look for impact of my character than the length' : Aamir Ali

Actor Aamir Ali, who appears in the new web series Black Widows after his recent digital debut with the series Naxalbari, finds web entertainment an exciting space to explore. "I think the webspace is exciting, so I look for the impact of my character than the length. I have done lead roles on television. Also, it is interesting for me, because I have just done two digital shows so far. In 'Naxalbari' my character was totally opposite to the one I played in 'Black Widows'. I got a chance to show my versatility," Aamir said.About his role in Black Widows, Aamir said: "It was not a principal character. The story is lead by three women

and it revolves around a murder investigation. While everyone else in the story is playing intelligent and cunning characters, my character is the only innocent, gullible one. It was a special character. I knew that the length of my role is shorter but it was interesting. Honestly, I will not mind a s p e c i a l appearance as long as it is written well, especially one that creates impact," he said.

I understood myself better as actor through 'Gunjan Saxena' : janhvi Kapoor

Actress Janhvi Kapoor who played the title role in the biopic Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl earlier this year, says the film helped her understand herself better as an actress."Through this film, I've understood myself better as an actor. It's given me a different sense of confidence and, maybe it's because of the impact Gunjan madam's story and resilience has had on me. I have learned to enjoy the process of growth," the actress said."I have always wanted to do memorable work and touch people's lives because I know how much cinema has touched my life. I hope I can do that," added Janhvi, the daughter of yesteryears' superstar, late Sridevi. The film directed by Sharan Sharma is based on the life story of Gunjan Saxena, the first Indian female Air Force pilot in combat, who was part of the Kargil War 1999.

Everyone's preference is not the same : Shikha Talsania Although packaged as a promise of what the comic caper would entail, the trailer of Varun Dhawan-starrer Coolie No 1 received mixed reactions. While some celebrated the teaser, others slammed the film, a re-do of a '90s classic frontlined by Govinda. However, Dhawan's co-star Shikha Talsania doesn't consider a handful of reports enough meat to make a fair analysis. "Entertainment can be different for different people. A certain kind of humour works for me, while another doesn't. But, I can choose to watch what I enjoy," says the actor, whose father, veteran actor Tiku Talsania played a vital role in the original, directed by David Dhawan. With the director helming this second edition as well, Talsania is all praise for his working style. "He ensured that the ambience on

set was fun-filled, and he gave us space to own our scenes."While the masala film could have enjoyed a wider reach had it hit theatres, Talsania says there is a lot to benefit from a web release. "We can't ignore how accessible entertainment has become today. We must celebrate the fact that it has. The magic of watching a film in a theatre is unparalleled, but, OTT has been a saviour in this scenario."

Don't want to do things out of pressure anymore : Radhika Apte Actress Radhika Apte has realised she was doing a lot of work just because of the fear of missing out and says she is now determined not to take up work under pressure. The realisation dawned on her when the world was under lockdown due to the Covid-19 crisis."I realised that I'm grateful to get a lot of work and I have chosen work only when I wanted to do it. But there were a lot of other things I was doing with work, which are part of work and are a part of my job. I was doing these just out of FOMO," Radhika said."I did so just because I didn't want to miss out or just because others were doing it. In this time, when no one was doing anything, I was really chilled. I didn't want to do it either," she added. The actress continued: "I realised, 'Oh, I wanted to do it because others were doing it. If others don't do it, I don't want to do it'. So, just to distinguish between what you really want to do and what you're doing out of pressure -- that's what I've learned in these few months and I don't want to do things out of pressure anymore. Let's see how long that lasts."Radhika entered the industry with a small role in the 2005 release "Vaah!

PAGE 20

Life Ho Toh Aisi!", and went on to do films like "Shor In The City", "Kabali", "Phobia", "Badlapur" and the short film "Ahalya".The actress is credited for breaking the stereotypical image of the Bollywood heroine with her roles in "Phobia", "Badlapur", "Manjhi: The Mountain Man", "Lust Stories", "Sacred Games", "Pad Man" and "Ghoul".Radhika is currently seen in "A Call To Spy", the international production capturing the story of three female spies during World War II. In the film, Radhika plays British spy Noor Inayat Khan, also known as Nora Baker, who served in the Special Operations Executive during the war. Looking back at the challenges of playing the role, Radhika shared: "The biggest challenge is when you are trying to portray a real-life person. It is so difficult because you have a huge responsibility, you can't just come up with things. So, it was difficult because there are no clips or anything that you can watch. It's just literature and photographs. She is a very unique personality, not just because of geographical diversity, but because of a spiritual inclination, and her philosophy, and her reasons behind participating in the war."

Working with efficient co-actors enhances your work : Sanya Malhotra Actress Sanya Malhotra believes that teaming up with efficient co-actors improves the quality of one's work.Since her debut in Aamir Khan's 2016 blockbuster "Dangal", Sanya has shared the screen with many reputed actors including Ayushmann Khurrana, Vidya Balan, Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Amit Sadh. She particularly exuded a special on-screen bond essaying a mother-daughter relationship with Vidya Balan earlier this year, in "Shakuntala Devi". "The best part of the film ('Shakuntala Devi') is the unique portrayal of the mother-daughter relationship that sets it apart from other

Poverty reduction grants support local governments

ocal governments will have the opportunity to apply for the second round of the Province’s Poverty Reduction Planning & Action Program grants to help develop local strategies and solutions to address poverty.

Applications for the second intake will be accepted until midnight (Pacific time), March 5, 2021. “These grants help local governments develop their own poverty reduction plans and projects that directly support vulnerable and low-income people in their communities,” said Nicholas Simons, Minister of Social Development and Poverty Reduction. “TogetherBC recognizes we all need to work together to reduce poverty.”

As part of TogetherBC, British Columbia’s Poverty Reduction Strategy, the Province provided $5 million to the Union of B.C. Municipalities (UBCM) for the grant program, initiated last year. In the previous intake, 63 local governments received a total Government will look at funding new of $1.6 million for 34 poverty reduc- projects, plans and strategies that focus on one or more of TogetherBC’s tion plans and projects. priority action areas, including: housing; families, children and youth; education and training; employment; income; and social supports. District Acquires Land for Environmental Conservation and Future Park Uses

Mission, BC—The District of Mission has recently purchased a 4.7-acre parcel of land on St Anthony Way for wetland conservation and future park purposes using funds from the Parkland Acquisition Reserve. The property is located next to a larger wetland owned by Ducks Unlimited Canada and the District’s purchase will help ensure further protection of the environmental attributes of this area. The remaining acquired space is reserved for park purposes that will be developed at a future time. “This investment in parkland and environmental conservation continues Mission’s legacy with this type of land acquisition,” said Acting Mayor Cal Crawford. “Parks and open spaces are important for a healthy and sustainable community, and the ongoing protection of our wetlands is critical to maintaining this significant natural ecosystem for the benefit of wildlife.” The District thanks the Fraser Valley Watersheds Coalition and the Stave Valley Salmonid Enhancement Society for their assistance and expertise in

identifying the environmental attributes in need of further protection and enhancement. “Stave Valley Salmonid Enhancement Society appreciates the District’s long-standing practice of working co-operatively with our society and other agencies in identifying and permanently protecting environmentally sensitive habitat,” said Jim Taylor, a director of Stave Valley Salmonid Enhancement Society. “The cooperative approach taken by the District goes beyond land purchase and opens the door for attracting outside funding and technical expertise in restoring fish and wildlife values.” The District also thanks the Donatelli family for their stewardship of the land over many generations. In the interim, the current rental agreement will remain in place until further park development plans are approved by Council. Mission’s Parkland Acquisition Reserve is funded from development for the purpose of securing parkland throughout the District.

A clearer vision on where things can or will head in the future or perhaps what is possible, will be coupled with the ability to recognise where doubt lies or areas lacking clarity. Any exaggerated expectations of somebody else can come to light as well as the opportunity to modify them so that everybody becomes happy.

You can be drawn into the needs and desires of someone else mainly because they can be quite intense. Hold back from making generous promises for the future because they could turn into greater responsibilities than you now realise. If this happens it will make you feel rebellious, so be cautious now and avoid this need.

Either somebody new can come into your life or something can take a new direction with another person that can bring a lot of change into your life. This is likely to include much social activity to early January. It may involve you with a group of people that will have a level of excitement attached. Life will start to look up.

You cannot afford to waste time when it comes to matters that need to be sorted out related to work or daily routines. There is something new that will be substantial connected to this, so it must be done properly and to the last detail. You will actually enjoy the end result. It can have a restful and peaceful effect.

The opportunity for leisure, pleasure and social activity will step up another notch. It is also a good time for romance, which will continue until early January. Taking a holiday will be most enjoyable, even planning one for a later time. Spend this week finalising loose ends or getting details in place, otherwise they could be a bother.

You can begin to organise things at home or with the family that give you a sense of satisfaction, especially if it happens to be social. Someone could surprise you with their agreement to be involved or perhaps help you out. You could also decide it is time to buy something new for the house that will jazz it up in some way.

A favourable decision made by somebody else could enable you to make plans you may have been uncertain about. This could include travel for a short period of time. Life will become busy with a lot of running around or the need to communicate more than usual. Involved in this could be something you haven’t done before.

You could be tempted to buy some get fit equipment or spend money on a program associated with improving your general health and wellbeing. If not in this direction you may want something that makes life easier when it comes to daily routines or jobs that need to be done. Just be cautious about spending too much money.

The Solar Eclipse this week occurs in your sign. This can bring a dramatic new direction, especially if born around mid December. There may be a sense that a new life is beginning to take shape. You are more than prepared to take the risk. Venus will also be in your sign now until 9th January, bringing you much pleasure.

You will be more reflective than anything else, particularly when it comes to letting things go, which could also mean getting rid of the unnecessary. Spending time alone will be something you enjoy. It will allow you to get things in place that may have been eluding you of late. A major shift is about to take place in your life.

You are finally coming to the end of cycles that have been holding you back since late 2017. Your focus needs to be on your priorities. Being more mentally determined could seem to come from nowhere. Peace, balance and enjoyment are what you should be considering from now to early January with a view to persist from then on.

It could seem that life keeps piling on the pressure. There is no escape from this but you could find a new way of applying a more balanced way of dealing with it from now to early January. It is better to come to a state of peace with it. Don’t be tempted to make impulsive decisions financially that may not be beneficial.

(NC) Sometimes it feels like dinner just comes around too quickly. For weeknights when you’re feeling strapped for time, there’s nothing better than being able to make your family a healthy meal using a staple ingredient that’s bound to be in the cupboard. Canned tuna is budget friendly, extremely versatile and wonderfully good for you. Look for sustainably sourced options like MSC certified tuna with the blue fish label. When you purchase seafood that is MSC certified, you can enjoy wild, sustainable seafood while helping to preserve the ocean. A great quick idea is to pair the tuna with couscous. If you’ve never made the grain before, fear not, because if you can boil water, you can make couscous. Once cooked, it’s also a good leftover that keeps well in the refrigerator. Feel free to add other ingredients that you may already have like fresh spinach, spring onions or even dried fruit like apricots for a hint of sweetness. Couscous Tuna Salad Prep time: 10 mins

2 tbsp Italian parsley (roughly chopped) 1 heirloom beefsteak tomato (medium diced) ½ hot house cucumber (medium diced) 3 preserved grape leaves (layer leaves, roll them tightly and "chiffonade"- cut into thin strips) Dressing Ingredients: ½ cup cider vinegar ¼ cup grapeseed oil 1 tbsp lemon juice 2 tbsp orange blossom honey Salt and pepper Directions:

Plate by folding together the couscous, vegetables and desired amount of dressing in a large bowl and fluff. Add the flakey chunks of tuna on top of a bed of couscous salad and drizzle remaining dressing over salad and tuna. COVID-19 What you need to know.

Because only humans can cause the virus to spread, the best way to protect ourselves is to stay home. If you must leave your home, it is very important to practice social distancing. It is extremely important to not touch your face, since the virus can enter through the eyes, nose, or mouth. Proper hand washing and alcohol hand sanitizer can help kill the virus on your hands.

Presently we have restrictions that cover social gatherings and events, restaurants and bars, athletic events, mask requirements, travel advisory and enforcement are in effect. Though it may be hard during this holiday season, we must keep our gatherings within our own household.

It affects different people in different ways. Multiple infected will develop mild to moderate illness and recover without hospitalization. Most common symptoms are fever, dry cough, and tiredness. You can also develop symptoms which are less common, such as aches and pains, sore throat, diarrhea, headache, loss of taste or smell.

Testing is available for those who have COVID-19 symptoms and those who have been sent for testing by a doctor or Public Health. You can get tested in multiple places in the Fraser Valley. First, call your Family Doctor! Visit adofp.com/covid to book a test.

You must immediately self-isolate. This means staying home and minimizing contact with other household members. Do not go to work, school or public places.

The PHO orders and guidelines remain in place for everyone regardless if they have received the vaccine or not. The vaccine is being delivered and phases in public health will arrange for different groups as needed. No action is required on your part.
