The old exterior of Building A-East of UFV’s Abbotsford campus has been replaced with an upgraded exterior cladding system, improved insulation, energy efficient windows and other infrastructure, such as roofing, flooring, lighting and fibre optic networks. The new facility will provide open and flexible learning spaces, student consultation areas, new office and classroom furniture, and other necessary amenities. “Investing in better student spaces for in-demand courses offered by UFV enables us to improve access to education for students in communities across B.C.,” said Anne Kang, Minister, Advanced Education and Skills Training. “The renewed facility
“While we certainly miss the energy our students bring to campus, this project is another example of the work being done to ensure the best possible campus learning environment upon their return,” said Joanne MacLean, president, UFV. “We’re especially excited knowing this targeted capital funding from the ministry will continue to help us engage learners, transform lives and build community for generations to come.” The total project cost of $7.7 million for Phase 1 was funded by the Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Training. A few finishing touches, including landscaping, will complete the Building A-East component of the project. The focus will now shift to upgrading Building D, Phase 2 of the project, a larger and more complex project that will implement similar upgrades to those of Building A-East. Phase 2 is scheduled to be completed by early 2022.

There should be plenty to occupy you but this could easily distract you from matters going on behind the scenes. It would not be wise to presume you know what can be expected from somebody else, especially if money is involved. Making your priorities clear does not necessarily mean they are accepted. You must follow up.
What you would like to do and what you feel you can do without stirring up too much controversy can be two different things. This could unwittingly bring you to a point where you need to be realistic. There will be commitments attached and while you are capable of handling them you may need to ensure there are boundaries.

Before you enthusiastically rush into something take a good look at the responsibilities attached, as they may not be as easy as they are portrayed. This you could discover from Mid May. Keep your longer-term goals in focus with the view of maintaining your independence when it comes to any future choices.
Get as much rest as possible as your energy level will not be high. Finding some quiet time to yourself will give you the opportunity to contemplate the way a matter can be tackled that should be moving forward but is unclear. Knowing the true desires or expectations of somebody else can be difficult to tap into right now.
Expect a busy and active time involving other people. It might be difficult to work out exactly what they are looking for or expecting from you. You should avoid taking on commitments for this reason, especially if they cannot be changed. Focus on your own priorities and any actions necessary to put things into motion.
Someone else can be charming yet mysterious. You cannot afford to take them on face value, especially when it comes to what they believe will be future development. Employing your natural analytical skills will enable you to realise where things don’t add up. You should not waver from whatever you want to establish for yourself.
The days may seem to drift by without accomplishing what you intended. You may wonder where the time went. Distractions can come from unexpected expectations of others. This will be difficult to curb if you feel guilty about not responding to them. You can certainly make things more enjoyable but you must be determined.
What starts out as fun involving somebody else can turn out to be more for their benefit than yours. This could make you realise that you cannot afford to put any more time into it. Your focus needs to be on matters you want to put into place that will bring underlying security and benefit. This could include home and family.

You are in a good position to put your ideas forward. There is likely to be something about this that will not follow normal protocol. Even so, some sort of traditional aspect can be maintained. Be sure you have all angles covered because anybody you might need to challenge will be prepared to fight for their position.
Attempting to make final decisions on any matter can be difficult. You might be trying to push something too quickly. More time and energy probably needs to be put into the details, especially if it needs to satisfy somebody else. An unexpected opportunity can arise either connected to something you want to buy or work.
You should be full of optimism because the opportunity to pursue something important to you can present itself. This could come about in an unusual way or it could mean you need to go after it in your own way. The only thing you have to watch is spending money on impulse and taking things on face value. Investigate.
There can be much to enjoy on a personal level this week. It may be hard to feel motivated when it comes to general routine but it won’t hurt to be lazy for once. You need some time to think and contemplate so that you can take advantage of the active cycle you have until 23rd April to start putting things in place for solid results later.

Interview With Mission Mayoral Candidate: Paul Horn Background Questions: What is your educational background?
Stone Soup Initiative, Grapevine Food Sharing, Volunteer Mission and the Strands of Poverty study. I have also served as Vice President of the Mission District Historical Society and Mission Minor Lacrosse. I was also a board member of the Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame and the Southwest Mission Ratepayers Association. I am currently the president of the New Westminster Salmonbellies Senior A Lacrosse Club, which is Canada’s oldest and most successful sports team. I am also an active part of the Mission Food Council and Mission’s Community Wellness Committee.
I graduated from the International Baccalaureate Program in 1984 and went on to study Child and Youth Care at the University of Victoria. I went back to university again in the 2000’s and earned my Bachelor of Arts from Thompson Rivers University; my Professional Teaching Certificate from the University of the Fraser Valley; and my Master of Science in Performance Management from the University of Leicester in the UK. I am passionate, knowledgeable and skilled in these areas and I want to make sure that we set up mission for a strong future. What would make you a good elected representative? I am good at building consensus and I am an effective advocate, capable of working with other levels of government and the private sector to get what we need in our community. What are your top 3 priorities for the district? How will you address them? Jobs – we need to ensure that the waterfront, our downtown core, and Silverdale all include capacity for people to work. In the case of the waterfront, that will include substantial clean industry. In other areas, it will mean professional offices, mixed used retail and service sites, and the technology connections to allow people to work from home throughout our community. It will also include the infrastructure planning, such as cell coverage, Internet service, and roads that will allow for the transportation of goods and workers. We need to update the software we use at City Hall so that we can more efficiently communicate
that we keep up with development. I would reconvene the Mission Healthy Community Council in the first few days of my term and ask them to undertake the process of renewing these plans. Engagement – we need to repair the relationship we have with our citizens, using processes like Community Visioning workshops and Town Hall meetings. If people only interact with the city when they are feeling like a proposal is threatening their neighbourhood character, we will continue to have deep divisions in our community and nothing good will come of that. But if we engage citizens in planning in a proactive way, we can have a long-term plan for our infrastructure and for major development areas such as Silverdale and the Waterfront. There are many other areas that represent a priority, but these are the foundations from my perspective. If we begin with these three things, we will create a foundation for tackling other important work.

Parliamentary secretary’s statement on Sikh Heritage Month Rachna Singh, Parliamentary Secretary for Anti-Racism Initiatives, has released the following statement to mark Sikh Heritage Month: “The Sikh community has continued to enrich and strengthen our province since the first Gurdwara opened its doors more than 100 years ago in Vancouver. British Columbia is now home to one of the largest Sikh populations outside of India, and we are grateful for the rich culture and diversity that they bring to this province.
“April is an important month for Sikhs around the world. For more than 300 years, Sikhs come together to mark the creation of the Khalsa of Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji, which imparts the values of equality, selfless service and social justice that are so important to the Sikh community. This month is also a chance to celebrate the harvest and the start of a new agricultural year as part of Vaisakhi, the holiest celebration in Sikh faith.
“While celebrations will look different this year with COVID-19 still on our doorstep, I encourage everyone to take the opportunity this month to take part in these festivities in a safe way and learn more about a community that has played a significant role in shaping this province over the last century. “The last 12 months have challenged us all in so many ways, but our government remains committed to stamping out racism and discrimination in B.C. That’s why we’re making it a priority to introduce B.C.’s first anti-racism act and legislation that will help reduce systemic discrimination and pave the way for race-based data collection.
“I encourage all British Columbians to join us in honouring Sikh Heritage month and taking inspiration from the invaluable contributions that Sikh Canadians have made – and continue to make – to communities in B.C. By treating each other with respect and dignity, and lifting people up at “At a time when so many are every opportunity, we can make B.C. divided, we can all learn from a more just, inclusive and welcoming the Sikh notion of ‘sarbat da province for everyone.” bhala’ and the wish that everyone should prosper. From Balwant Sanghera’s Desk Every five years Statistics Canada conducts a nationwide Census. It provides an opportunity for Canadians to help paint a portrait of Canada’s diverse population. The Census provides high quality information on key socioeconomic trends that help the government make important decisions that affect our families, neighbourhoods, and businesses. At the same time, the Census provides a comprehensive picture of Canada’s rich cultural diversity, ethnic make-up, linguistic profile, and diversity. All Canadian citizens, permanent residents as well as nonpermanent residents including those on study permits and work visas etc. are required to count themselves in. It is mandatory. This process has two forms. 75% of households will get the short form. It requires basic information and is easy to complete. 25% of Canadian households will get the long form which requires more information than the short form. The Census Day is Tuesday, May 11, 2021.On both forms there are couple of questions about the respondent’s language.
languages-English, French, others. The response to language related questions determines the number of speakers of each of these languages selected by Canadians. The last Census conducted in 2016 placed speakers of Punjabi language at 568,375. However, during the past five years, the number of Punjabi speakers in Canada has grown at a tremendous rate. Many new immigrants, international students, and temporary foreign workers are likely to be Punjabi speakers. Thus, the current number of Punjabi speakers in Canada might be close to a million now.
The language questions require the individual to choose one of three
President, Punjabi Language Education Association (PLEA)
On behalf of Punjabi Language Education Association (PLEA) I would like to urge well-wishers of Punjabi to take active part in Census 2021. The Census will provide them with an excellent opportunity to select Punjabi. By doing so they will be giving a big boost to their mother tongue. Not only that, but they should also encourage their family, friends, and neighbours to do so. Sincerely, Balwant Sanghera
