FRASER VALLEY BANDITS LAUNCH #IAMVALLEY MOVEMENT AHEAD OF 2021 CEBL SEASON The Fraser Valley Bandits launched the #IAmValley movement Tuesday with the release of a cinematic hype video that uses a diverse cast of 35 athletes, artists and business leaders filmed across more than 16 locations in the Fraser Valley to celebrate the voices, histories, identities and industries of the region. The cast includes past, present and current amateur, Olympic and professional athletes, as well as local artists and entrepreneurs who participated in a robust shooting schedule earlier this year. The goal of the video and overall campaign is to showcase the Fraser Valley as a dynamic region that is defined by the various cultures that occupy its rich landscape and to spotlight the accomplishments and bright futures of the artists, athletes and leaders who are writing an exciting chapter in Fraser Valley and Canadian history. A full list of cast members and scene locations can be found below. “The #IAmValley movement was built on the premise of celebrating our community and encouraging youth and adults alike to take pride in where they are from. The Fraser Valley is a special place because it is enriched by individuals and families who have lived here for generations or are new to British Columbia and chose this region as their home,” said Bandits vice president Dylan Kular. “Whether it be on the court or in the community, we are an organization that is committed to honouring the heritage and numerous

cultures of the Fraser Valley and we invite everyone to be part of what we are building together as a team.” To produce the video, the Bandits collaborated with esteemed Abbotsfordbased videography company Colla Films. The voiceover for the video was performed by local hip hop artist Saint Soldier (Amrit Saggu). By blending a combination of off and oncourt Bandits highlights with an array of cinematography, the #IAmValley campaign video serves as an important recognition of the region’s status as a basketball hotbed and an inclusive home for everyone. The campaign also stands as a rallying cry ahead of the upcoming Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) season, which begins on June 24 with a rematch of last year’s championship that saw the Fraser Valley Bandits fall to the Edmonton Stingers in the final. The launch of the campaign is accompanied by the grand reveal of two new branded elements, an #IAmValley slogan wordmark and an “FV” monogram secondary logo, which will be introduced to fans and a global audience on social media through the Bandits’ respective Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, TikTok, and YouTube pages throughout this week. Fraser Valley fans can rep the new branding (see below) thanks to a fresh line of New Era Cap merchandise by visiting the Bandits online team store or in-person at the TELUS Bandits Athletic Centre (located at West Oaks Mall in Abbotsford).

B.C.’s paid sick leave will support workers, reimburse businesses Workers will soon have access to a made-in-B.C. paid sick leave program that will support workers to stay home when they are sick during the pandemic and afterward, including permanent paid sick leave, as a result of legislation tabled Tuesday, May 11, 2021.

The number of paid sick days and other supports will be determined following consultations with the business community, labour organizations, Indigenous partners and other stakeholders.

To better support workers during the pandemic, amendments to the Employment Standards Act will bring in three days of paid sick leave related to COVID-19, such as having symptoms, self-isolating and waiting for a test result. NEW THEORY MAY REVOLUTIONIZE TREATMENT OF ENDOMETRIOSIS Endometriosis, a disease found in up to 10 per cent of women, has been enigmatic since it was first described. A new theory developed by researchers at Simon Fraser University suggests a previously overlooked hormone — testosterone — has a critical role in its development. The research could have direct impacts on diagnosis and treatment of the disease, signaling hope for women with endometriosis worldwide. The disease is caused by endometrial tissue growing outside of the uterus, usually in the pelvic area, where it contributes to pain, inflammation, and infertility. But why some women get it, and others do not, has remained unclear. The new research is based on recent findings that women with endometriosis developed, as fetuses in their mother’s womb, under conditions of relatively low testosterone, compared to women without endometriosis. PAGE 10

According to the researchers’ theory, this low testosterone ‘programs’ the developing reproductive system of women to exhibit the unique suite of traits that is linked with endometriosis, including early menarche, short menstrual cycles, high pain sensitivity, high inflammation, and altered levels of the hormones that control ovulation and the menstrual cycle.

“Low testosterone in early development is the strongest known correlate of endometriosis, and its effects can explain the majority of endometriosis symptoms,” says SFU biological sciences professor Bernard Crespi, a Canada Research Chair and co-author of the work with graduate student Natalie Dinsdale. “What’s more, the new theory has direct implications for endometriosis diagnosis and treatment.”

The researchers found their theory to be supported by a remarkable range of data in the literature, from genetics and development to endocrinology, morphology, life history, and evolutionary biology, thus providing the first comprehensive explanation for the traits associated with endo- Crespi notes that testosterone has apmetriosis. parently been overlooked in studies The theory can explain almost all of endometriosis because it is usually symptoms of endometriosis as down- regarded as a ‘male’ hormone, even stream effects of low early-life testos- though it is known to have key effects terone. We show that polycystic ovary syndrome is essentially opposite to endometriosis in its causes, correlates, and major symptoms. As such, this work should help to transform our understanding of both disorders.”

Elli AvrRam wins best actress at Stockholm City film fest for 'With You' Actress Elli AvrRam has won the Best Actress award for her role in the short film "With You" at the Stockholm City Film Festival. The 23minute short film is based on the socially relevant subject of mental health awareness, sexual abuse and childhood trauma. "I'm just so thrilled and grateful for this recognition. We all went in with our heart for this project, and to see it getting this response at such prestigious film festivals is truly heart-warming. I feel so happy for all of us, grateful to my director Peppe Segura, and especially for the fact that a story like this is being noticed and appreciated," she says. Talking about

the process of shooting the film, she adds: "I flew down from Mumbai to Stockholm to shoot the film because I wanted to be part of such films that raise awareness about important issues. Everyone who worked on the film felt it's important to bring in light, in the darkness, because that's what we all need to be able to find the strength and to change things. It was emotionally tough to step into my character, Lilly, but I believe that's what I also love, to get challenged, because it leads to growth as an actor."

Couldn't have asked for a better digital debut : Sonia Balani Actress Sonia Balani makes her digital debut in the upcoming "Bhopal To Vegas", and she says her character shows how to follow a dream and lead life on own terms. The "Detective Didi" fame actress plays Rashmi in the series, a character she describes as "a fearless and vivacious young girl who wants to be successful while doing something she enjoys". "She is smart and carefree, and takes risks unlike other girls her age. I admired her in many ways, and couldn't have asked for a better start to my digital innings. My character and the story are both relatable and funny, and also deliver a subtle message on following your dreams, being passionate about what you do, and falling in love the way you want," said Sonia.

I was impressed by Rashmika Mandanna`s nuanced performance in Dear Comrade : Shantanu Baagchi Scouting in the South for fresh talent is a tried and tested formula—one that has often yielded a positive response. Joining the bandwagon of South imports is Rashmika Mandanna, who while gearing up for her debut Bollywood film Mission Majnu, has already begun shooting for her second project opposite Amitabh Bachchan. “We chanced upon Rashmika’s work,” says director Shantanu Baagchi, who was seeking a female lead in the Sidharth Malhotrastarrer. “I was impressed by her nuanced performance in Dear Comrade [2019]. It is a crucial role in the film. [We needed an actor who would understand] the sensitive interpretation of the character. She has the right mixture of innocence and beauty [that fits the role]. There’s a good possibility that Indian audiences will discover another movie star from the South,” he says. In his first video interaction with Mandanna, producer Amar Butala realised that he had found his leading lady. “It was remarkable to see her react to the script narration. She picked up every nuance of the character despite being on a video call,” says Butala, adding that he was banking on her “experience and confidence”. “She also has the sincere energy of a newcomer.”

woman in many films, TV shows and web series, and she says she would like to explore comedy, especially in films. "I want to do comedy roles in cinema because that one of the genres I did not tap into much. I used to do comedy on television and on stage. We used to do 'The Great Indian Comedy Show' with Suresh Menon, Ranvir Shorey, Vinay (Pathak), Rakesh Paul. I love doing comedy and that is why I want to explore the genre in cinema," Suchitra said. "In real life, I am quite a clown, though my on-screen image is different and that's because I mostly played those ' strong women' roles," added Suchitra, who is still recalled for her delightful comic cameo in the 2001 hit "Dil Chahta Hai". Asked if there is any web series or film role that she wished she had essayed, Suchitra replied: "I think the character that Neena Gupta played in 'Badhaai Ho' and Shraddha Kapoor's character in 'Stree'. Even though 'Stree' was a horror film I was laughing all through it. I like such entertainer films in which the story has a dash of comedy."

Started cooking because of my son : Malaika Arora

Malaika Arora says she started cooking because of her son Arhaan Khan. Malaika will be seen on the fourth episode of 'Star Vs Food'. She cooks her all-time favourite comfort food, Malabar fish curry, for her close ones including sister Amrita Arora, and friends Preeta Sukhtankar and Sarvesh Shashi. On entering the kitchen, Chef Prateek Sadhu asks her how she planned to cook in the kitchen in stilettos. Malaika replied: "If I had a choice, I would sleep in stilettos. I have already thought two steps ahead of you, I am a mom, so I am always well prepared. So, I have come with comfy shoes and I am fully prepared." She added: "I really look forward to days like this because it has all my passion in it, which is spending time with my near and dear ones, my dear friends, cooking, learning something that I don't know, meeting new people, raiding a kitchen." On how often she cooks, Malaika said: "Whenever I get the time. My son loves it actually, he likes. I actually started cooking because of him." "He once came back from school and he told me, 'mumma, all the other parents cook such yummy stuff and you don't know to cook, actually that was one of my challenges that I took up when I said, you know what, I will show you and I can do this! So, I cook for him pretty often," she said on the show, which airs on Discovery+.

How Long Does It Take to Settle an Infant’s ICBC Claim? When a child is hurt in a motor vehicle accident, parents are faced with a lot of extra responsibility. Caring for a seriously injured child takes a big financial and emotional toll. Already overwhelmed parents are surprised by how long it takes to settle their child’s ICBC claim. Infants’ ICBC claims take longer to settle because there are special considerations for injured children. Here is what parents should know. Different Time Limits Apply to an Infant’s ICBC Claim The general rule is that an adult has two years from the date of the accident to start a personal injury lawsuit. If the person is under the age of majority (19) at the time of the accident, the running of the two-year limitation period is postponed. That means an infant must file their lawsuit before their 21st birthday, or within 2 years of the accident, whichever is later. That being said, there may be good reasons to start the child’s ICBC claim right away, even if settlement does not occur until after the child reaches the age of majority.

Mel Chaudhary Lawyer Email address: mchaudhary@ simpsonthomas.ca Phone: 604 697 3251 Simpson, Thomas & Associates jured. For example, consider a child whose ability to work is impacted by the injuries. Compensation for this loss of future earnings may be significant, as a child has their entire working life ahead of them. But how is the loss valued if the child had not yet started work or even chosen a career? It takes time to gather evidence to substantiate a child’s damages.

Expand pathway to permanent residency for essential workers, says BC group Migrant workers and their advocates today held a press conference calling on the Canadian Government to expand the new pathway to permanent residency for essential workers. On April 14th, Immigration Minister Marco Mendicino announced a new pathway to permanent residency called the Temporary Resident to Permanent Resident Pathway. It provides 90,000 new spots for permanent residence, with 50,000 of them being for workers: 20,000 for healthcare workers and 30,000 for workers in essential, nonhealthcare jobs. The program officially opened on May 6th. “The government knows that providing these workers a path to permanent residence is the right way forward, which is why it created this pathway. But, for a program that is supposed to recognize the important contributions of essential workers, it leaves out far too many,” says Jonathon Braun, from the Migrant Workers Centre (MWC), during the virtual press conference. “These workers, many of whom have been working in Canada for years, will

be left with temporary status – and helped Canadian families to continue vulnerable to abuse and exploitation,” standing, despite everything that has he added. been experienced with the pandemic for more than a year,” he added. There are an estimated 200,000 to 500,000 undocumented workers in For agricultural workers, their preCanada today and they form the most carious situation is exacerbated by the vulnerable section of “essential ser- COVID-19 pandemic. vice” worker heroes during this pan“As agricultural workers, during the demic. For this reason, I “I think that the requirements for this would like to ask the Canadian governprogram are not fair. Migrant Workers Centre calls on the Canadian government to improve the Temporary Resident to Permanent Resident Pathway by: Expanding the policy beyond November 5, 2021 and making it permanent Removing the caps on the number of applications processed under the temporary public policy Removing the arbitrary language requirement Removing the arbitrary requirement that an applicant has to be “currently” employed in order to qualify Implement a complementary public policy to allow undocumented workers to restore their status in Canada in order to qualify for the new public policy “The exploitation and precarious state of migrant and undocumented workers has to stop. These are workers who often perform the dirty, difficult and dangerous jobs in our communities. Jobs that COVID-19 now highlight as essential. Beyond calling them heroes, let’s give them the justice they deserve,” said Braun.

You can come up with some inventive solutions when it comes to finances required for anything you want to put in place. You ideas can be clever, yet practical. This can also apply to conversations or agreements that you might need to enter into. It all may take more time than you initially anticipate to arrive at a final conclusion.

The New Moon this week occurs in your sign providing you with the opportunity to take new directions with something important to you on a personal level. It may also bring an opportunity you do not expect. You could be unusually forthright with something you have to say. There maybe the need to deal with technology as well.

Mental clarity when it comes to future goals worth pursuing may make you realise that what somebody else expects is not necessarily for you. Don’t expect to have all of the answers just yet. Some sort of initial commitment may be necessary from now until late July. This may not become rock solid until January to May next year.

New opportunities to take action on something that is an important priority to you can present itself quite surprisingly. This may involve a group of people in some way. Somebody who is in a position to support you will willingly do so. This might require some behind the scenes communication. It will be one step at a time.

Don’t presume there to be a totally straightforward path when it comes to any new commitments involving other people. It would be wise of you to verbalise what is important to you. Exactly what others expect from their connection to you will be difficult to know just now. This could become more obvious from late July.

You are in a good position to streamline daily routines by dropping anything that takes too much time. This can alter your commitments mainly because you will focus on your priorities more. Activity with others will increase significantly to late July. This could also include forming beneficial relationships and gaining recognition.

time to time but you should not let them stop you altogether. Have regular exercise and watch overindulgence to late July. Weight gain will be easy.

want to refuse but you will need to know how this could be put into place successfully. Make room for them to change their mind up to mid July.

Some very constructive exchange of ideas between you and others can occur. This can involve some sort of underlying change of structure for you up to late July. It can take all of this time to get something fully sorted to your satisfaction. Be careful about being too generous of yourself and ending up with most of the work.

Being diligent with work that needs to be done can bring some stable financial results. You could also generate financial improvement through taking a closer look at your spending. Changes on a pleasurable or social level could bring new people into your life that can be different to normal but interesting at the same time.

Commit yourself to anything you think you might enjoy. It could take until mid July to either fully find out or settle yourself into it. You could suddenly find the energy to get to work on something you want to restructure. This could include matters to do with home and family. You need to be mindful of financial costs attached.

You will initially begin a new 12 Year Cycle with Jupiter, your ruling planet moving into your sign until the 28th July. This will be stage one – stage two will occur late December to May 2022. New ideas can spring to mind that will give you a sense of optimism that may have been lacking of late. A new you can begin to emerge.
