DOMESTIC ABUSE HEAD INJURIES PREVALENT AMONG WOMEN IN PRISON, STUDY FINDS Aslam, the study’s second author who led the interviews and assessments with offenders, says expanding the study to Canadian and other prison populations would be a critical next step. She can talk about the impact of trauma, head injury and the overall vulnerability of female offenders in the study sample.

prison population more broadly and could help to inform mental health and criminal justice policy development.

“The relationship between head trauma and both violent crime and length of incarceration suggests that this may be an important consideration in the assessment and management of violent offending, as well as in reducing the risk for reoffending,” says Aslam. “There is a need to consider these vulnerability factors in Canada and elsewhere in developing appropriate policy and interventions for this population.”

“The findings are incredibly sobering,” says Aslam. “While we anticipated that the incidence of head injuries among women who are involved in the criminal justice system would be high, these estimates exceeded our expectations.” Researchers also found that violent criminal behaviour was three times more likely among women who had a history of significant head injury, while women who sustained such injuries generally had prison sentences that were three times longer. Twothirds were found to have suffered repeated head injuries, and nearly all reported a history of abuse.

The study, carried out by the University of Glasgow, was funded by the Scottish government and the National Prisoner Healthcare Network. Aslam previously earned a Master’s degree at the University of Oxford and is currently a clinical forensic psychology graduate student in SFU’s Mental Health, Law, and Policy Institute, working with SFU professor Stephen Hart.

CFIB statement on BC’s emergency sick leave coverage and consultation

T

he Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB) appreciates the BC government has taken into consideration the fragile state of BC’s small businesses in its emergency COVID-19 sick leave coverage. The BC government incorporated CFIB’s recommendations into its BC paid sick leave program, mainly that this program is temporary, funded by the provincial government and workable for businesses. It is critical that the reimbursement of 3 paid sick days, at $200 per day, is paid back to employers quickly and they are not having to wait weeks for the reimbursement. “Small businesses understand the need for workers who contract COVID-19 or develop symptoms to rest, isolate and recover,” said Annie Dormuth, provincial affairs director. “This is essential to overcoming the pandemic and getting to a position where businesses can fully open and operate. Today’s announcement at-

tempts to strike the right balance of allowing paid sick days while also not imposing additional costs on BC small businesses at a time when they can least afford it.” Analysis from the CFIB shows the average BC small business has added more than $138,000 in debt, and only 37 per cent are making normal sales for this time of year. More broadly, the recovery of private sector employment continues to lag the public sector throughout the province. “CFIB is concerned about the government’s intention to introduce permanent sick days once the program ends after December 31, 2021. Small businesses are now seeing a glimmer of hope of when they can resume their operations without restrictions. The economic recovery of small businesses still remains uncertain and asking for their feedback on taking on additional costs right now is bad timing,” concluded Dormuth.

Speakers from three different religious backgrounds addressed the webinar including Governor of Kerala Shri Arif Mohammad Khan, Art of Living founder Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, and Chief Minister of Punjab, Capt Amarinder Singh. In his opening remarks the moderator of the session, Dr Jagmohan Singh Raju, Additional Chief Secretary, Govt of Tamil Nadu lamented that UN has conveniently ignored the genocide perpetrated on the Indian populace over centuries ignoring acts of violence against non-Abrahamic religions like Hinduism, Sikhism and with miniscule presence in the state rallied from across the country and Buddhism. abroad to help the flood victims last He also appealed to commemorate year. Guru Saheb stood for secularism and he was a universally acknowledged spiritual leader and was rightly called, ‘Hind di chaddar’, he said. His government is preparing several programmes to commemorate the occasion which had to be postponed because of the pandemic and once the situation eases our endeavour is to spread the message across the globe, Capt Amarinder Singh said. Besides renovating the jail in Bassi Pathana where Guru sahib were imprisoned, his universal message of one humanity and religious freedom shall continue to be promoted.

The exemplary role that Sikhs have always played during any crisis is reflection of the teachings of the great gurus that they have imbibed into their lives, Sri Sri said. They have learnt the lesson that as human you cannot be a back-bencher or shy away from one’s responsibility as a human to help those in need, to stand up and act. And the greatest truth, Gurudev said, is not to be carried away ever by the arrogance and pride of power, but stay humbled and standup for truth. Later, reputed filmmaker of “Nanak Shah Faqir” and “Raazi”, Harvinder Singh Sikka, in his expression of gratitude considered the opportunity as a Divine gift for being a part of such discussions which revealed many unknown facets of Sikh history, including Maharaja of Patiala’s interaction with the Sikh Gurus that need to be documented and shared.

Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar began his address with “Waheguru ji ki khalsa, waheguru ji ki fateh”, and said that Guru Tegh Bahadur taught Sikhism, more than a religion, began a powerful message to the world that and still is, a way of life, remarked you should not forsake those who Harvinder Sikka. believe in you.

1. Remain at The Scene: Never drive away from the scene of an accident without stopping, even if it seems minor. 2. Stop Safely: Bring your vehicle to a stop in a place not blocking the road, if possible to move it safely. Otherwise, leave your vehicle where it is and get yourself and your passengers to safety. 3. Check for Injuries: Check yourself and your passengers for injuries. If you are not too injured, check on the well-being of the occupants of others involved in the accident such as the driver and passengers of the other vehicle, a pedestrian, or cyclist. 4. Call for Help: Call 911 if anyone is injured, if the accident has caused significant damage to vehicles or property, if the other driver leaves the scene without exchanging information (a hit-and-run), or if you have any other concerns (for example, the other driver seems intoxicated or is refusing to provide insurance information).

You can come up with some inventive solutions when it comes to finances required for anything you want to put in place. You ideas can be clever, yet practical. This can also apply to conversations or agreements that you might need to enter into. It all may take more time than you initially anticipate to arrive at a final conclusion.

The New Moon this week occurs in your sign providing you with the opportunity to take new directions with something important to you on a personal level. It may also bring an opportunity you do not expect. You could be unusually forthright with something you have to say. There maybe the need to deal with technology as well.

Mental clarity when it comes to future goals worth pursuing may make you realise that what somebody else expects is not necessarily for you. Don’t expect to have all of the answers just yet. Some sort of initial commitment may be necessary from now until late July. This may not become rock solid until January to May next year.

New opportunities to take action on something that is an important priority to you can present itself quite surprisingly. This may involve a group of people in some way. Somebody who is in a position to support you will willingly do so. This might require some behind the scenes communication. It will be one step at a time.

Don’t presume there to be a totally straightforward path when it comes to any new commitments involving other people. It would be wise of you to verbalise what is important to you. Exactly what others expect from their connection to you will be difficult to know just now. This could become more obvious from late July.

You are in a good position to streamline daily routines by dropping anything that takes too much time. This can alter your commitments mainly because you will focus on your priorities more. Activity with others will increase significantly to late July. This could also include forming beneficial relationships and gaining recognition.

time to time but you should not let them stop you altogether. Have regular exercise and watch overindulgence to late July. Weight gain will be easy.

want to refuse but you will need to know how this could be put into place successfully. Make room for them to change their mind up to mid July.

Some very constructive exchange of ideas between you and others can occur. This can involve some sort of underlying change of structure for you up to late July. It can take all of this time to get something fully sorted to your satisfaction. Be careful about being too generous of yourself and ending up with most of the work.

Being diligent with work that needs to be done can bring some stable financial results. You could also generate financial improvement through taking a closer look at your spending. Changes on a pleasurable or social level could bring new people into your life that can be different to normal but interesting at the same time.

Commit yourself to anything you think you might enjoy. It could take until mid July to either fully find out or settle yourself into it. You could suddenly find the energy to get to work on something you want to restructure. This could include matters to do with home and family. You need to be mindful of financial costs attached.

You will initially begin a new 12 Year Cycle with Jupiter, your ruling planet moving into your sign until the 28th July. This will be stage one – stage two will occur late December to May 2022. New ideas can spring to mind that will give you a sense of optimism that may have been lacking of late. A new you can begin to emerge.

Is Parenting Stressing you out? The Calm Connection group can help! Parenting is hard work and it is common to feel confused or uncertain about your child’s development, especially their social and emotional development. The Calm Connection Program helps parents to understand that the world we are raising our children in today is different from the world that we grew up in. Children’s brains are actually being wired differently due to their experiences in today’s world, and so our parenting needs to reflect and respond to these changes too. The program empowers parents so that they can continue to develop safety and connection with their child, especially during times of stress. It sets the foundation for lifelong connection with their child and fosters resiliency for their children to cope with stress in the future. The Calm Connection is a six week parenting group that provides opportunities for parents-caregivers and children to strengthen their relationship, reduce stress and increase

their awareness and understanding of social emotional learning. The information and strategies provided in the Calm Connection group, will help support parents in laying the foundations in development critical for skills that their children will need for lifelong learning and opportunities. If you would like to learn more about Calm Connection, or about your child’s social and emotional development, you can make a referral to us on our website at www.fvcdc.org (click on refer here) or contact at the numbers below. We also accept referrals from your family doctor, pediatrician, health nurse and caregiver (with permission from the child’s guardian). Participation in our programs is free and accessible through designated interpreters. Most important thing is patience : Mrunal Thakur

Want filmography I can be proud of after 50 years : Rajkummar Rao Rajkummar Rao has been tagged as one of Indias best actors. He has been feted with the National Award and has essayed characters that have redefined the Bollywood hero. The actor shares the kind films he wants in his filmography. In his 11-year Bollywood journey so far, Rajkummar has featured in many slice-of-life features including 'Kai Po Che!', 'Shahid', 'Aligarh', 'CityLights', 'Bareilly Ki B a r f i ' , 'Newton', 'Stree' and 'The White Tiger'. He says the pressure of Fridays doesn't make him feel insecure. "I feel very secure. I don't take the

pressures of Fridays. I believe that there are some films that are for life -- some are meant for life and some for both box office as well as life, such as 'Stree'," the actor points out. "I just want to do good films. That's the only way I want my filmography to be (made up of) films I can be proud of when I turn back after 50 years and say these are films, I have done and they are all special," he says. The 36-year-old actor was recently seen in the horror-comedy 'Roohi'. He has 'Badhaai Do' and 'Hum Do Humare Do' coming up. He says he wants every year to have some great films where he can play wonderful characters.

Actress Mrunal Thakur says uncertainty is a natural trait if one belongs to the film industry. "I think the most important thing is patience. As an artiste, you are always curious to perform but the big question is content. You have to choose the right script. I feel pressured (and think) should I choose this script? I feel internally that I can do better but then I feel if I let this script go, will I get more films? This thought keeps bothering me all the time," she said. Mrunal has interesting films such as 'Toofan', 'Jersey' and 'Aankh Micholi' coming up, and says it is important to not take up films just for the sake of having work. She talks of patience again, while noting that the Covid outbreak has delayed her releases, just like all other films. "It all depends on how patient you are. It's been a while after 'Batla House', then 'Ghost Stories' came, and now 'Toofan', 'Jersey' and 'Aankh Micholi' are taking time. I tell myself every day that I know it is difficult but the wait is worth it. These are special stories and it is an honour to be part of them. These are the kind of films which deserve to be celebrated. The storyline content, screenplay, characters, makers -- everything. It is difficult but it's a game of patience," she says. Like everyone else in the industry, Mrunal wants to be part of cinema that is meaningful. "If I try to hurry up, I may end up taking up scripts just for sake of it. I will end up losing myself. For me, films are an integral part of my life and I want to be associated with a film that will have a message and do good for society in some way or the other," she sums up Working on a film is a time- like what you are doing. In the consuming process and that is why case of 'Radhe', I liked the script. actor Disha Patani believes one has It is a fun, massy film. I like to really be excited about the watching such movies.
