Over is devastating to me. this last year, I’ve been exploring a different part of Canada from what I am accustomed to and have enjoyed every minute in this city. However, recently that has changed. I am struggling right now to be in Halifax while my family is suffering at home. We have been forced out of our home in the Sumas Prairie region of Abbotsford, BC due to the recent flooding disaster. Rather, I should say they are going through this – I am sitting across the country, unable to help and only able to express my grief all alone.

Losing one’s home and livelihood is a devastation in itself; however losing wedding photos, mother’s day cards, pets and animals that are loved as family is much worse. My heart shattered listening to these stories on the news over and over, unable to even hug my neighbour whose dog was stranded in the flood or console my father who was in tears for being unable to save his daughter’s silly belongings. Sumas Prairie is full of people who are proud of what they’ve built; they put countless hours and sleepless nights into

In fact, the city values agriculture so much that Council voted to integrate strategies of cultivating public support for agriculture and to invest in agricultural infrastructure as priorities for its official Agriculture Strategy3. My family immigrated to Canada long before I was even born. We reflect on this choice quite often and are eternally grateful to be part of this nation. There have been so many opportunities given; through hard work, my parents achieved all their dreams here. They watched their children grow up safely, worked on their farm to feed their community, and became part of something so much bigger than themselves. They found a home in Canada and, frankly, nobody in my family would ever dream of going somewhere else. Everything we need and want is here. Right now though, we are turning to you, the government of Canada, to help us and the other residents of our community in our joined time of need. I sincerely thank you for reading my letter and want to wish you Happy New Year. I look forward to hearing back from you and to all that we can achieve together.

Agriculture is one of the economic pillars of the city of Abbotsford and defines the city in many ways3. According to the city’s website and federal resources, over 7000 people are employed by Abbotsford farms and total gross farm receipts in 2010 amounted to over $635,000,0003. These numbers were consistent in the 2016 Census of Thank you, Agriculture and have been trending Harleen Dhillon MRT(T)

From Balwant Sanghera's Desk: Tackling Loneliness

It has been close to two years since COVID-19 Coronavirus suddenly hit the world like a ton of bricks. Despite all of the relief efforts and financial support by governments at different levels, this pandemic has adversely impacted majority of people. The ongoing waves of these variants have scared everyone. The Coronavirus has affected everyone not only socially, economically and physically but also mentally. Throughout all of this, the feelings of loneliness, especially for senior citizens and other vulnerable people in our society stand out. This has prompted a lot of research and studies on this subject especially since the Coronavirus crept upon us.

Loneliness leads to other mental health issues like depression, anxiety, heart disease and stroke etc. Strangely, our youth seems to have been equally affected by feeling of social isolation and loneliness. Being alone and loneliness are vastly different from each other.

PAGE 2

U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy has summed up the distinction very well in these in his book: The Healing Power of Human Connection in a Sometimes Lonely World. Dr. Murthy goes on to state that loneliness is a subjective feeling that the human connections we need in our life are greater than the human connections we have. He goes on to state: “You could be surrounded by just one or two people and feel perfectly content if you have strong relationship with them”.

On the other hand, even if you are in a large group of people but don’t have a strong connection with any of them you may feel lonely. Julianne HoltLunstead, a professor of psychology and neuroscience at Brigham Young University, is a prominent researcher on loneliness. She states that younger people and those living alone and those facing financial insecurity or mental and physical health issues are at a high risk of feeling lonely and depressed.

The COVID-19 Coronavirus pandemic has exacerbated the impact of loneliness on us more than ever before. Based on her research, Holt-Lunstead offers some practical suggestions to deal with loneliness. These include mindful meditation, expressing gratitude or giving thanks to others. Also, performing simple tasks of goodwill for ones neighbours, friends and others helps one make lasting connections.

need to be upfront in sharing our feelings. Noble suggests that engaging in some sort of art form really brings out our true feelings and defines us. It is very unfortunate that a lot of people suffer in silence rather than seeking out help. Rather than suffering in silence we need to reach out and ask for help. In every community there are a lot of resources and resource people well qualified to help. Quite a few of them offer their services in various languages. Thus language should not be a barrier to seeking out help. Spending some time in Nature, such as a park or wilderness is a great panacea for mental health issues and loneliness. Pursuing ones hobbies or passions and learning new skills are also some of the other ways to feel connected and overcome loneliness.

It has been reported that performing small acts of kindness for others also goes a long way in tackling loneliness. Expressing gratitude and giving thanks to others is a great way to feel connected. At the same time, these selfless small acts and tasks give one a lot of internal satisfaction and happiness. Such strategies are supported by Dr. Jeremy Noble, a Harvard physician and founding president of the UnLonely Balwant Sanghera Project. Dr. Noble suggests that we should focus more on making authentic (Balwant Sanghera is a retired School connections. As part of this process, we Psychologist and Community Activist)

Ken Herar endorses BC Liberal Leadership Candidate, Ellis Ross

BC Liberal Leadership Candidate Ellis Ross is being endorsed by Ken Herar, City of Mission Councillor. Herar believes Ross' vision for uniting BC and broadening the BC Liberal Party is a winning combination for all British Columbians.

welcomes everyone in. We need to stop putting up barriers. Yesterday's insider politics aren't going to build a stronger BC Liberal party or a stronger BC," says Herar.

"When we first met, I shared with Ellis (Ross) that I had considered run"Frankly, (Ellis Ross) is a breath ning for BC Liberal leadership, but of fresh air. The BC Liberal Party had decided to hold back this round." needs change, and a new voice that Herar continues, "Ellis actually encouraged me to run. He welcomed the additional competition and told me that he felt adding Indo-Canadian representation to the race, as well as another voice for change, would be beneficial to the BC Liberal party." In a recent interview, Ellis Ross shared his vision for building a 'bigger tent' BC Liberal Party. Speaking with Mo Amir on the Premiere episode of CHEK's marquee "This is Vancolour" 7pm Sunday evening talk show, Ross stated that under his lead-

Construction to begin on Fraser Highway improvement project Drivers who live or work in west Abbotsford can look forward to faster, safer travel in and out of the City via Fraser Highway, as a result of a threephase improvement project. Construction of the first phase is scheduled to begin mid-February 2022. The project will help reduce traffic congestion and enhance public safety on Fraser Highway, between Mt. Lehman Road and Station Road. The first phase will involve intersection improvements and centre-left turn lanes at the following strategic intersections: Lefeuvre Road; Bradner Road; Ross Road; Stevens Street; and Pinegrove Street. The improvements to the western section of Fraser Highway align with the City of Abbotsford’s strategic goal to improve transportation throughout the City and the enhancements meet requirements for the movement of goods and people, which improves the livability of the City and promotes the local economy.

lot easier and quicker- but also much safer,” said City of Abbotsford Mayor, Henry Braun. “Abbotsford is the largest city in the province geographically and requires an efficient and reliable transportation system. Providing improvements, especially to major traffic corridors, will benefit everyone who lives and works here.” Phase 1 construction was awarded to Eurovia British Columbia Inc. In order to mitigate traffic delays the contractor is required to start work after 9 a.m., Monday to Friday. There is an enhanced traffic management plan in place to help mitigate traffic impacts to allow two-way travel to be maintained during the day. The bulk of the work will be carried out from Monday to Friday between 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Some work may be done in the evening/night shifts Monday to Friday between 6 p.m. and 7 a.m., as well as on Saturdays anytime between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. The City of Abbotsford is working with Eurovia British Columbia Inc. to minimize traffic impacts.

ership the BC Liberal Party would "walk diversity" and "be inclusive" to a wide range of views. "Ellis (Ross) gets that we need to start with mutual respect and focus on uniting British Columbians. Those are values that shape our community and which shaped my upbringing, and they're values I know (Ellis Ross) and I share," says Herar. "I have always been passionate about my community, and I want to continue to do more. If the timing is right, I would be proud to earn a spot on the BC Liberal team, led by Ellis Ross," says Herar. “I know Ellis Ross is that change. TD Bank Group and UFV tackle social isolation and loneliness using robots and AI The Community Health and Social Innovation (CHASI) Hub at the University of the Fraser Valley (UFV) has received $225,000 over three years from the TD Bank Group to use artificial intelligence and social companion robots to reduce social isolation and loneliness in youth and older adults during the pandemic.

“We are excited to partner with TD on this project to examine the effectiveness of various interventions in helping these two population groups that have been deeply affected by the pandemic,” noted Dr. Martha Dow, Director of CHASI. “These findings will be shared with government, industry, and community partners to enhance social and emotional wellness in our community.” The World Health Organization (WHO) has identified loneliness as a significant predictor of depression and anxiety in both older and younger adults. However, the rates of social isolation and loneliness are significantly higher amongst older adults compared to all other age groups, with around 40% of all older adults reporting feelings of loneliness.

The TD Ready Commitment funding will support research augmented by artificial intelligence and machine learning to examine the impact of the pandemic on two populations that have been disproportionately impacted — youth and older adults. Along with other research methods, smart algorithms will be developed to detect audio-visual cues, recognize emotions, and respond to symptoms of anxiety and depression, as well as teach new coping strategies. The project team will assess the success of these methods in helping offset social isolation and loneliness.

Cell: Fax: 1 866 565 4138 “For people in communities everywhere, the pandemic has underscored the critical importance of maintaining good mental health, especially during periods of social isolation and loneliness,” said Andy Cribb, Senior Vice President, Branch Banking, TD Pacific Region. “TD is proud to partner with UFV and CHASI as researchers seek to address this significant challenge so that they can help people and communities stay resilient for years to come.” While youth aged 15-24 are more likely than the general population to report worsening mental health due to COVID-19, the most dramatic impact of the pandemic has been felt by older adults, their families, and caregivers. “We are particularly excited about this project and helping people affected by COVID-19,” said Anita Nielsen, UFV Executive Director, Advancement & Alumni Relations. “We see UFV’s role as central in supporting the health and wellness of communities and we know this partnership with TD will fuel innovative thinking from inception to implementation while training the next generation of student researchers.”

Taking action to put future plans in motion could meet with some unexpected twists and turns involving other people. They might think you are moving too quickly or haven’t dealt with the details thoroughly enough. What they prefer could be more cautious or conservative. This might require you to reassess your priorities.

Whatever decisions you plan during January need to be viewed as an initial stage, so it would be wise not to attempt implementing them quickly, especially if somebody else is pushing for this. It will not be until mid February to mid March that you will be in a position of clarity and probably because of what goes on before that time.

Something needs to be brought to an end and while that should not be difficult to manage, wanting to do it could be the stumbling block. Clear vision of what the future will mean is difficult but there is an ending, new beginning energy involved. This could also require you to re-evaluate commitments up to early February.

There is a lack of clarity when it comes to others. It would be best that you observe their actions – it could tell you a lot more than what they have to say. Don’t rush into taking on any obligations, especially if you feel sorry for anybody or presume it will help. You need to wait and be asked and then carefully consider your answer.

Other people will prove interesting up to March. This could include coming into contact with people from the past from mid January to early February. They could seem very open with what they have to say or perhaps promise but you could find it will change, mystifying you. It will be from mid February onward it will make sense.

Don’t be too reliant on others when it comes to putting things in place – you will get a lot more done through getting on with these tasks yourself. You could begin to realise during January that daily routines need to be streamlined for complete success with changed structures. Complete clarity will arise from mid February.

This is a good time to present your ideas to somebody else – they could be keener to pay attention to them, even implement them than you anticipate. It won’t hurt to leave more regular routines to one side for the moment. You will enjoy having a break during January and perhaps visiting somewhere that has pleased you before.

Impulsive spending on something that could be useful in daily life can be worthwhile but on anything indulgent is a different matter. Family matters that haven’t been sorted in the past could come up again in January. You should take this seriously and give them thought. Final solutions can be established from mid February.

Social opportunities can come thick and fast this week. More practical things could curb being able to take advantage of them all though, so be sensible, otherwise, you could get over tired. From now to early February, put your mind to any details that need to be cleared up or plans that need to be put in place for this coming year.

Don’t be surprised to find yourself changing your mind or in a situation where you need to, from now to early February. This will concern something personal to you. Don’t expect to gain complete clarity yet – further contemplation could be required up to mid February. Then you can move ahead with certainty through to 10th March.

You will want things in order and could initially feel it is so. However, it would be best to make allowance for unexpected events or circumstances that could come out of nowhere and generate many distractions for you. Financial matters could need closer attention – there might be something you have forgotten to pay or allow for.

Hold yourself back from a serious commitment just because it feels right or seems to be what you have dreamed about. Don’t risk anything financially. There is something you need to contemplate to early February that could lead to re-looking at important priorities in life. You can make clearer decisions from 10th March.
