The Abbotsford Community Foundation (ACF) is pleased to announce that it is releasing an updated Vital Signs report in 2022. Community residents are asked to share their experiences of Abbotsford in a short survey, available at https://www.surveymonkey. com/r/ACFVitalSigns2022. Supported by Community Foundations of Canada, Vital Signs reports are locally led by community foundations and used by residents, businesses, community organizations, universities and colleges, and government leaders to learn more about community needs, take action and direct resources where they will have the greatest impact. “The purpose of Vital Signs is to examine and raise awareness of the strengths and challenges facing Abbotsford,” says Wendy Neufeld, Executive Director of the Abbotsford Community Foundation. “Our last report was issued in 2019, and there have been tremendous changes both locally and globally since then. In our 2022 report, our data collection and community survey responses will provide an update onissues we covered in 2019, including housing,
safety, and economy. The 2022 report will also reflect on two other topics that have increased in relevance since 2019: community belonging & health and wellness. Having an understanding of what’s happening at the community level helps the Abbotsford Community Foundation to make effective decisions and helps our local charitable, service and government agencies to do the same.” In addition to data collection and statistical analysis, the Vital Signs report includes input from the Abbotsford community. To that end, the ACF has developed a short survey about local issues. The survey, which is anonymous, consists of 36 questions and should take no longer than 10 minutes to complete. It can be found at https:// www.surveymonkey.com/r/ACFVitalSigns2022 or you can contact the ACF by phone and request we email the link. Residents have until the end of April to complete the survey. Survey results will be aggregated and shared in the upcoming Abbotsford Vital Signs report, to be published in October 2022.

COVID-19 & IMPACT ON INFORMAL CAREGIVERS’ MENTAL HEALTH: STUDY A new study led by Simon Fraser University’s Gerontology Research Centre has found that female informal caregivers who provide intensive care at home experienced higher levels of depression and anxiety during the COVID-19 pandemic, and suggests more support is needed. The study, among the first to examine the mental health of informal caregivers over time, was recently published in The Journals of Gerontology: Series B. Researchers surveyed 14,118 care-
riencing more depression and anxiety compared to those caring for a loved one in a healthcare institution, including long-term-care homes, and more anxiety than those who cared for someone in another household. Female caregivers reported greater depressive symptoms and anxiety while male caregivers exhibited a greater increase in symptoms of depression and anxiety over time. Researchers suggest that this pattern could be due to greater resilience among female caregivers during the

Tool helps close financial gender gap (NC) Women have been disproportionally impacted by pandemic job losses and having to reduce their work hours to manage children’s schooling, caregiving or household responsibilities. But even before the pandemic, studies show more women struggle with feeling confident about their finances than men. The Air Quality Health Index (AQHI) is a scale designed to help you understand what the quality of the air around you means to your health. It’s a tool developed by health and environmental professionals to communicate the health risks posed by air pollution. The tool is designed to help individuals and teams or organizations doing outdoor activities make decisions to protect your health and the environment such as: • limiting your exposure to air pollution; • adjusting your activity during episodes of increased air pollution and favouring physical activity on days when the index is lower; and • reducing your personal contribution to air pollution (e.g. by choosing active transportation). The index provides specific advice to the general public, as well as for people who are especially vulnerable to the effects of outdoor air pollution. Vulnerable people include small children, pregnant people, seniors, people who work outdoors, people with lung or heart conditions, and people who exercise or play sports outdoors. If the AQHI is between four and six, be sure to reduce the intensity of your activities. Consider rescheduling if the AQHI is seven or more. Whether you’re a sporting-event organizer, a participant on a sports team or are just getting out on your own, be sure to consult the index before and during an event, as levels may change quickly. Abbotsford, BC – From January 28 to May 7, 2022, The Reach is proud to present ÈIÈy ‘c qryV |sheeshe ‘ch thareṛ | a crack in the mirror. This exhibition is a survey of new work by artist Simranpreet Anand, a young Punjabi-Canadian artist whose work has been deeply influenced by her experiences as a Punjabi-Sikh. The exhibition is guest curated by Sajdeep Soomal, and it includes several works also made in collaboration with artist and scholar Conner Singh VanderBeek. Anand’s practice, indebted to familial and cultural community, engages materials and concepts drawn from the histories of Punjab and its diasporas. The title of the exhibition, sheeshe ‘ch thareṛ, captures the fissures emerging from the artist’s ongoing encounters with matter and material culture in our globalized world. The show opens with bMdy csm dIdM Pnfie |bande chasm deedn fanaai (SGGS 723), a body of works that takes the synthetic, plastic-laden material culture that surrounds contemporary Sikh institutions as its starting point. Parallel to this series are works that consider the fabric of everyday life, attending to its embodied histories and gendered contexts of labour.
Users can download the app from the App Store or Google Play and sign in with the BC Services Card app or a Basic BCeID account any time of day. For both Anand and The Reach Gallery Museum, it was essential for all the exhibition texts to be presented in both English and Punjabi. Furthermore, both Anand and The Reach recognize that a significant segment of the local Punjabi-Canadian community can speak and understand Punjabi but may not be able to read and write it. Therefore, each exhibition label also contains a QR code that connects to audio recordings of Anand reading the Punjabi content. A virtual artist talk with the artists will be presented on March 29, also in collaboration with the School of Creative Arts at the University of the Fraser Valley. To register, visit: https://artisttalk_simranpreetanand. eventbrite.ca. “I’m thrilled to be able to present this exhibition by an emerging artist who is each making real artistic and professional strides in her practice,” says Curator of Art & Visual Culture Adrienne Fast. “As the only public, professional art gallery in the Fraser Valley, The Reach has an important responsibility to support artists who live and work in our region. But we also want to showcase work that speaks to the many different communities in our region, including the large and historically important South Asian community in the Fraser Valley. sheeshe ‘ch thareṛ includes beautiful and meaningful works of art that many of our visitors will see themselves reflected in.”

Taking action to put future plans in motion could meet with some unexpected twists and turns involving other people. They might think you are moving too quickly or haven’t dealt with the details thoroughly enough. What they prefer could be more cautious or conservative. This might require you to reassess your priorities.
Whatever decisions you plan during January need to be viewed as an initial stage, so it would be wise not to attempt implementing them quickly, especially if somebody else is pushing for this. It will not be until mid February to mid March that you will be in a position of clarity and probably because of what goes on before that time.
Something needs to be brought to an end and while that should not be difficult to manage, wanting to do it could be the stumbling block. Clear vision of what the future will mean is difficult but there is an ending, new beginning energy involved. This could also require you to re-evaluate commitments up to early February.
There is a lack of clarity when it comes to others. It would be best that you observe their actions – it could tell you a lot more than what they have to say. Don’t rush into taking on any obligations, especially if you feel sorry for anybody or presume it will help. You need to wait and be asked and then carefully consider your answer.
Other people will prove interesting up to March. This could include coming into contact with people from the past from mid January to early February. They could seem very open with what they have to say or perhaps promise but you could find it will change, mystifying you. It will be from mid February onward it will make sense.
Don’t be too reliant on others when it comes to putting things in place – you will get a lot more done through getting on with these tasks yourself. You could begin to realise during January that daily routines need to be streamlined for complete success with changed structures. Complete clarity will arise from mid February.
This is a good time to present your ideas to somebody else – they could be keener to pay attention to them, even implement them than you anticipate. It won’t hurt to leave more regular routines to one side for the moment. You will enjoy having a break during January and perhaps visiting somewhere that has pleased you before.
Impulsive spending on something that could be useful in daily life can be worthwhile but on anything indulgent is a different matter. Family matters that haven’t been sorted in the past could come up again in January. You should take this seriously and give them thought. Final solutions can be established from mid February.
Social opportunities can come thick and fast this week. More practical things could curb being able to take advantage of them all though, so be sensible, otherwise, you could get over tired. From now to early February, put your mind to any details that need to be cleared up or plans that need to be put in place for this coming year.
Don’t be surprised to find yourself changing your mind or in a situation where you need to, from now to early February. This will concern something personal to you. Don’t expect to gain complete clarity yet – further contemplation could be required up to mid February. Then you can move ahead with certainty through to 10th March.
You will want things in order and could initially feel it is so. However, it would be best to make allowance for unexpected events or circumstances that could come out of nowhere and generate many distractions for you. Financial matters could need closer attention – there might be something you have forgotten to pay or allow for.
Hold yourself back from a serious commitment just because it feels right or seems to be what you have dreamed about. Don’t risk anything financially. There is something you need to contemplate to early February that could lead to re-looking at important priorities in life. You can make clearer decisions from 10th March.
