Pharmacists

can prescribe

contraceptives, treatments for minor ailments

Starting June 1, 2023, people in B.C. can get prescriptions from their pharmacist for contraceptives and medications to treat 21 minor ailments, such as allergies, shingles, cold sores, pink eye and uncomplicated urinary tract infections.

“We are delivering on our commitment to give pharmacists the power to provide prescriptions,” said Adrian Dix, Minister of Health. “Starting tomorrow, people can go to their local pharmacy to get the medication they need for many minor ailments and contraceptives. This not only makes it easier and faster for patients to access these services, it also takes pressure off the primary-care providers and our public health-care system as a whole.”

To access the new minor ailment and prescription contraception service, B.C. residents with a Personal Health Number (PHN) can visit a pharmacy in person or call to schedule an appointment. Starting June 29, 2023, they can also book appointments online.

“Community pharmacists are here and ready to help people in B.C. when they need it,” said Chris Chiew, president of the BC Pharmacy Association. “Across the province, thousands of pharmacists are eager to support patients by using our expertise and training to increase access to care. Pharmacists are one of the most accessible health-care providers in B.C., and we are here for patients when they need us for the treatment of a minor ailment, a prescription for contraception or ensuring they have the medications they need.”

Through the new service, a pharmacist can make an assessment of the patient’s presenting symptoms, check their medical history and recommend an appropriate treatment, which may include self-care advice, over-thecounter medications or prescription medications. Some patients may also be advised to see another health-care provider if the condition is deemed non-minor or if there are other concerns warranting further exams by a doctor or nurse practitioner.

“Pharmacists across the province are ready to take on this expansion of their scope of practice,” said Suzanne Solven, registrar and CEO of the College

of Pharmacists of British Columbia. “Their education and training, and the new regulations and standards of practice that are now in place will ensure that the public has increased access to safe and professional prescribing services.”

The online appointment booking system will be similar to the Get Vaccinated system that people used to book COVID-19 and influenza vaccination appointments. People will be able to locate pharmacies that offer the service they need, be referred to a self-assessment guide to make sure the service is suitable for them, then proceed to book an appointment with the pharmacy of their choice.

“This new booking system will make B.C. the first jurisdiction in Canada to offer a provincewide online booking system to see a pharmacist, which will make it easier for people in B.C. to see their pharmacist,” Dix said.

The change follows an expansion of pharmacists’ scope of practice in October 2022, which allowed pharmacists to adapt and renew prescriptions for a wider range of drugs and conditions, and administer a wider range of drugs by injection or intranasally further to a prescription.

The scope expansion is part of B.C.’s Health Human Resources Strategy, announced on Sept. 29, 2022, to ensure people get the health services they need and that people are cared for by a healthy workforce. The strategy focuses on 70 actions to recruit, train and retain health-care workers while redesigning the health-care system to foster workplace satisfaction and innovation.

As part of the strategy, the Province is implementing a new family doctor payment model to help more family doctors start or continue their practice; adding more post-secondary training seats for doctors, nurses and allied health professionals; making it easier for internationally educated health professionals to enter B.C.’s health-care system; and adding more supports for people living in rural, remote and First Nation communities, including virtual health-care and travel programs.

Residential Tenancy Branch offers service in more than 200 languages

The Province’s Residential Tenancy Branch (RTB) is offering real-time interpretation services in more than 200 languages for dispute resolution and other information.

“Renters and landlords have been clear that the former residential tenancy dispute-resolution services, offered only in English, were not adequately addressing their needs,” said Ravi Kahlon, Minister of Housing. “We’ve heard those concerns and are taking action to provide assistance to people in multiple languages so both renters and landlords can get the fair treatment and timely support they deserve.”

Interpretation in multiple languages, offered free as of April 1, 2023, encourages more British Columbians whose first language is not English to access the RTB’s services.

Previously, people requiring interpretation in a different language were advised to engage a family member

or friend, potentially preventing them from accessing the RTB’s services.

“This change will help bring greater access for everyone involved in a tenancy inquiry or dispute,” said Spencer Chandra Herbert, chair of the Rental Housing Task Force and MLA for Vancouver-West End. “Offering these services in multiple languages responds to feedback received by the Rental Housing Task Force to ensure greater assistance for people with English as a second language so they can access the services they need at the RTB.”

Some of the more-common languages in which these services are being offered are Arabic, Cantonese, Farsi (Persian), French, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin, Punjabi, Spanish, Tagalog, Urdu and Vietnamese. Services are also being offered in many of the Indigenous languages spoken in the province.

“The outcome of a disputeresolution hearing can be the difference between retaining one’s home and being made homeless on short notice,” said Andrew Sakamoto, executive director at the Tenant Resource and Advisory Centre, a tenant-welfare organization. “All B.C. tenants, regardless of their first language, deserve access to justice when it comes to their housing. Today’s announcement will help ensure fewer tenants fall through the cracks when trying to pursue their rights at the RTB.”

The new service builds on multiple actions the B.C. government has taken to better protect renters since 2017, including:

capping rent increases below inflation at 2% in 2023;

banning illegal “renovictions,” an eviction that is carried out to renovate or repair a rental unit;

launching Canada’s first provincewide rent bank;

closing the fixed-term lease loophole; ending all strata rental-restriction bylaws;

limiting age-restriction bylaws in strata housing except for 55 and older; and

increasing the RTB’s operating budget and staffing by 40%.

or add the available rooftop tent from Mazda’s accessories range. Other equipment includes front and rear splash guards, side rocker garnish, headlamp garnish, and black wheel locks and lug nuts. Also available is a matte black hood graphic with a unique design inspired by the Meridian Edition. Our Meridian tester also featured G-Vectoring Control Plus, i-ACTIV AWD, Mi-Drive with Sport/Off-road/Towing modes, 18” inch black finish alloy wheels, i-ACTIVSENSE safety technology suite, LED interior lighting, wide-angle rear-view camera, 10.25- display, Bose® premium audio system with 12-speakers, 360° View Monitor, frameless rear - view mirror with Homelink® wireless control system, 7” inch digital LCD gauge display and more.

rear seats upright and 1,595 L with them folded. Standard roof rails, and a height-programmable power tailgate also add to the versatility.

The CX-50 rides very well on the highway with decent acceleration and smooth gear changes. There is also a sport mode which changes the transmission shift points for better response and enhances the G-vectoring control performance for sharper steering response and optimizes traction control when accelerating. The turbo engine has plenty of power and is the option to get if you can stretch to it – especially as it allows for more towing ability. The CX-50 has an offroad mode which holds the transmission in lower gears, optimizes the traction control for increased grip on loose surfaces, and gives the front and rear axles an equal torque split.

Safety is high with advanced safety and driver-assist items like blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, and lane-keeping assistance There is also forward collision warning with pedestrian detection and automatic emergency braking. Adaptive cruise control is also standard.

The interior of the CX-50 offers space for five passengers in two rows of seats. Inside, is a tastefully upscale interior with a visually interesting mix of colors and materials throughout. Some great detail such as the raised stitching d on the dash look very upmarket. It a neat driver friendly das. There are comfortable seats front and rear and excellent room in all quarters. Cargo space is increased with rear flat folding seats with 889 L of cargo room with the

Overall, the CX-50 is fun, relaxed, and easy to drive. Negatives are few, the infotainment system could be easier and less distracting to use, but that is about it. Fuel economy is rated at 10.4 L/100 km City and 8.1 L/100 km on the highway.

To sum up, Mazda have taken the correct step in providing an on-trend compact crossover with a rugged appeal and light trail duty ability. Positives include attractive styling, good driving dynamics, safety, and a plethora of as standard features. Highly recommended and excellent value for money.

Abbotsford Police Department Establishes Satellite Office at Highstreet, Hosting Community Pop up Events

In a move aimed at strengthening community connections and enhancing public engagement, the Abbotsford Police Department (APD) has opened a satellite office at the prominent Highstreet Shopping Centre on Mt. Lehman Road. This new location is set to serve as a hub for various outreach initiatives, with pop-up events scheduled throughout the summer.

Sgt. Paul Walker, media relations officer for the APD, expressed enthusiasm about the opportunities this satellite office brings. "The establishment of this office at Highstreet offers us a unique platform to interact with the west Abbotsford community," he stated. The intention behind organizing pop-up events is to encourage open dialogue between residents and police officers, allowing them to discuss community concerns, share insights, and forge stronger partnerships.

Walker emphasized that the Highstreet satellite office is not operational 24 hours a day, nor does it handle in-person police reports. Instead, individuals seeking to file a report should contact the non-emergency number at 604-

859-5225

APD Deputy Chief Dan Culbertson extended gratitude to Highstreet for their collaborative approach in fostering public safety. He acknowledged the significance of this office location in building community connections and facilitating increased public engagement with Abbotsford's police officers. Culbertson further added, "We look forward to hosting community pop-up events at this location and increasing AbbyPD's presence in the west Abbotsford region, supporting our vision of making Abbotsford the safest city in B.C."

The opening of the satellite office at Highstreet marks a notable step in the APD's commitment to fostering stronger relationships with residents and establishing a visible presence in the community. As the summer unfolds, the pop-up events promise to offer an invaluable opportunity for open conversations and mutual understanding, ultimately contributing to a safer and more connected Abbotsford.

MLA Banman condemns NDP delays and inaction on flood mitigation plan

In light of the ongoing floods, mudslides and fires in several B.C. communities, MLA Bruce Banman, BC United Shadow Minister for Emergency Management and Climate Readiness, called for immediate action to improve emergency preparedness in the province.

In a statement delivered in the House today, Banman criticized the government’s lack of preparation and proactive measures to protect British Columbians, particularly those in rural

areas of the province. He pointed out that the government’s flood mitigation plan, which was first brought forward in 2020, is only being implemented three years later and after the 2023 floods have begun.

Banman emphasized that floods, fires, and other emergencies are not new to British Columbia, and the government’s lacklustre response is unacceptable.

Surrey Police Union Launches New Website

Website Urges Surrey Mayor and Council to Dispatch the Surrey Police Service Now

The Surrey Police Union launched a new website, DispatchNow.ca. The website calls for swift action from Mayor Brenda Locke to follow provincial recommendations to transition to a local police service.

“We’re launching DispatchNow.ca because we need more police officers on the ground now.

We need to dispatch the police,” said Ryan Buhrig, Surrey Police Union spokesperson. “Surrey

Mayor Brenda Locke is stalling on making a decision to fully transition to a local police force.

Meanwhile, violent crimes are escalating in Surrey,” continued Buhrig.

In April, British Columbia’s Solicitor General, Mike Farnworth, made a recommendation to fully transition to a local police force to address the public safety issues in Surrey.

“The Minister rejected the City’s original plan. A vote to keep the RCMP would mean dangerously low staffing levels,” said Rick Stewart, President of the Surrey Police Union.

There are currently numerous Surrey Police Service members available and waiting to be dispatched, pending delays on the City of Surrey’s final decision on whether to transition to a local police force. In some cases, these are qualified officers with substantial years of experience from other police jurisdictions.

“We invite the community to show their support for a transition to the Surrey Police Service by adding their name through the website, said Rick Stewart. “Every day that we don’t have a commitment from the Mayor and Council to follow the Province’s recommendation to transition to a local police force, more crimes are committed and innocent people are hurt,” continued Rick.

Health-care workers better protected by expanded whistleblower legislation

Health-care workers will benefit from new protections when bringing forward concerns about serious wrongdoing as the scope of the Public Interest Disclosure Act (PIDA) expands to people working at health authorities, Providence Health, and BC Emergency Health Services as of Thursday, June 1, 2023.

“No one is above the rules. When someone sees something that could seriously undermine confidence in public services, it’s vital they feel they can safely share those concerns without fear of repercussion,” said Niki Sharma, Attorney General. “As we bring more employees under the protections of this legislation, British Columbians can be reassured that serious wrongdoing will not get in the way of delivering on the services we need most.”

PIDA promotes accountability and transparency by providing a framework for employees to report serious wrongdoing to designated officers within their

organization or to the Office of the Ombudsperson without fear of reprisal.

“The whistleblower protection law provides an important protection for health-care workers to voice their concerns about serious wrongdoing as we take action to strengthen our public health-care system,” said Adrian Dix, Minister of Health. “This is the result of years of diligent work done in light of the ombudsperson’s recommendations in the Misfire: The 2012 Ministry of Health Employment Terminations and Related Matters report. I thank everyone in the health organizations who have supported the development of the Public Interest Disclosure Act thus far, and I am proud of this legislation under our government.”

Employees who participate in PIDA investigations are protected from reprisals, such as demotion, termination or other measures that adversely affects an employee’s work conditions. This ensures that employees, both current

and former, who are under investigation or participating in an investigation, are treated fairly.

PIDA also requires ministries and the ombudsperson to report the number of disclosures they receive and the results of any investigations they undertake each year.

The Province passed PIDA in 2018 in response to the ombudsperson’s 2017 report, Misfire: The 2012 Ministry of Health Employment Terminations and Related Matters. The Province has implemented all 41 recommendations from the report.

Government has been progressively implementing the act across the public

sector since it came into force on Dec. 1, 2019. It currently applies to staff in government ministries, independent offices of the legislature, tribunals, and select agencies, boards, commissions, and Crown corporations, such as BC Housing. Bringing health authorities under PIDA will extend the protections available under the act to healthcare workers.

Other organizations, including educational institutions and health agencies, will be brought under PIDA in December 2023, and in 2024.

When Nora feels empowered

Nora Fatehi recently recalled the times when she has gotten panic calls from producers who wanted to cast her for dance numbers in order to save their film. According to the actor, that gave her a sense of empowerment. In an interview with an international news portal, Nora talked about getting panic calls from producers who wanted her to save their films with a dance number. However, the actress is cautious about choosing the right ones but when she does, she leaves no stone unturned to deliver her best. Elaborating further, she added that it definitely gives her a certain sense of empowerment, and responsibility. And the actress also said that when she is in front of the camera, she delivers. Nora went on to share that in a year, if 10 songs are offered to her,she says yes to one, or two. According to her, she doesn't want to bore the audience. The actress also added that she also doesn’t want to get stereotyped by doing too many dance numbers.

Nora has some noteworthy dance numbers in films like Bharat, Stree, Batla House, Roar, and Satyameva Jayate to her credit.

Sambhabana juggles shoots with studies

O disha-born actress Sambhabana Mohanty is one of the few actors from the state who has carved a space at the national level.

The Pyaar Ka Pehla Naam Radha Mohan actor has given her career trajectory a dramatic nonentertainment industry twist by pursuing a Ph.D. in sociology while juggling her studies with a busy TV career. Sambhabana says: "My mother is an actress from the Odia film industry, my father is a music album director, but I still am inclined towards studies. After my graduation, I worked in a few Hindi and Odia television serials and then decided to pursue my studies and enroll myself for a Ph.D. in at Sambalpur University in Odisha."

Talking about her life’s twists, Sambhabana said: “Clearly, life had a different plan for me. Soon after signing up for the course, I got the offer to play Damini in the show, and without giving it a second thought, I took it up.” Undoubtedly, it’s a lot of work. “It is not easy to juggle between the studies and shoots. I really have to take out time from the busy shoot schedule, but the professors and my production team are very supportive. So, I am able to manage both things, and I hope I clear my exams with flying colours,” adds the actress.

Priyanka breaks her silence on boycott calls

Actress Priyanka Chopra, who has been in the industry for two decades, took to Twitter and shared a lengthy post over unnecessary boycott calls of movies The film industry has always been a soft target for politicians and militant religious outfits. Several big films have suffered a lot due to the same, and one such instance was witnessed around the release SRK-Kajol starrer

A ctress Anupriya

Goenka is all set to reprise the role of Naina Nair in the second season of ‘Asur: Welcome To The Dark Side’. She reflected on her own journey in the film industry as well as her personal experience working in this thriller show. Reminiscing on what inspired her to transition from the corporate world to acting, Anupriya spoke about her immense love for the art and the zen effect it has on her. “I am an overthinker and my mind goes on constantly talking. I feel acting is the one time when I feel meditative. Between action and cut, no matter what is happening in my life, I’m just there in the present moment.”

“That is the most fulfilling feeling. It’s almost as if you breathe through it (acting) and everything in life is justified for the purpose of acting – the emotions, the good, the bad. I have started

searching for new experiences because I want to be a better performer and push myself.”

Coming to her role as Naina, Anupriya also spoke about how closely she relates to the character. “There is a lot of similarity between me and Naina. I relate to her in the sense that I’m also very strong-headed , I’m very opinionated, I don’t shy away from my opinions but at the same time I’m extremely vulnerable sometimes, and I show my vulnerability too.” “I have my own struggles with right and wrong, my value systems. But through Naina, I was able to touch upon that part, that one can cross a line for what they believe in.”

Dilwale and Bajirao Mastani starring Deepika and Ranveer. Breaking her silence on the issue, the Citadel actress wrote, “I can’t help staying silent on this anymore.. It’s too sad to see how films and actors become political pawns! Bans based on baseless propaganda.. People think films are just fun and games to make! They are made with blood, sweat and tears for entertainment!! Pls stand by the filmmakers who put in their life’s money and hard work to make people laugh and smile. Don’t let them be blackmailed and threatened by holding their films ransom just before release.” Priyanka admitted to being aware of the consequence of her statement but also added that she can’t keep mum anymore. “I know I may get into trouble for saying all this but I can’t be a silent witness to character defamation based on opinions anymore.. That is not what, the India I grew up, taught me,” theactress quoted.

D espite studying film direction, actress Alaya F decided to become an actor. Spilling some beans on the same, the actress told a news portal that although she studied film direction, she realised that it wasn’t for her because she is hyper-specific about everything when she is creating. Alaya also revealed that there have been times when she has reshot for brands, not because the brand is not happy but because she is not happy. Talking about her debut film Jawaani Jaaneman,

costarring Saif Ali Khan and Tabu, Alaya said that while she was shooting for the film, she was at her peak of calm. Each scene just flowed for her. She absolutely loved the film. According to her, everything fell together well in that film. She added that the first day of shooting made her very happy about her decision to be an actor. Earlier, the actress shared that she can feel whether the project is interesting, conventional, or unconventional in her gut, and that's how she opts for it. She also expressed how she wants to explore every kind of role. Having said that, she also doesn't want to do anything that’s overly experimental at this stage, unless it’s with the right set of people.

Here’s why Alaya became an actor

Born on May 11, 1929, in the village of Mehal Kalan, District Barnala, Sardar Mehar Singh Cheema was blessed with a loving and close-knit family. He was the beloved son of Late Surjan Singh Cheema and Late Chand Kaur Cheema and shared a special bond with his three sisters and three brothers. Sardar Mehar Singh Cheema was affectionately called Bapu ji by those who knew him. Bapu ji's journey through life was marked by resilience and unwavering love, even in the face of adversity. At the age of 41, he experienced the loss of his beloved wife, Late Jal Kaur Cheema, leaving him with the responsibility of raising their three sons and one daughter on his own. He edicated himself to providing a loving and nurturing environment, ensuring that his children felt cherished and supported. With the support of his brothers, he migrated to Mission, BC, Canada, along with his children and parents. In the pursuit of a better life, he built a home for his family, embracing the challenges that lay ahead.
