The Patrika Auto Review: 2023

Nissan Rogue Platinum AWD

The 2023 Nissan Rogue is the third generation of the compact SUV and is one of the company’s best-selling vehicles. The more squared-off and upright cabin layout gives the new Rogue a purposeful contemporary look, Cosmetic changes include a new logo that is found on the grille, wheel centre caps, liftgate and steer-

ing wheel.

The 2023 Rogue has a new SL trim slotting in between the SV Premium Package models and the fully loaded Platinum model. The SL trim level ($39,998) includes wireless charging, navigation, and the three-zone climate control system from the top trim level.

There is a price hike with frontwheel-drive base models with the 2.5-litre engine costing $28,998, while AWD is an extra $2,300 at $31,298. The new 1.5L engine is found on the SV and higher trim levels. The SV arrives with All-Wheel

Drive, a large moonroof, and the ProPILOT Driver assistance suite for $35,598. The SV Premium Package costs an extra $2,000 and adds a power liftgate, rear sunshades, rear heated seats, and leatherette upholstery. The top-trim Platinum model as tested costs $43,448 98 and adds a head-up display, wireless phone charging, quilted leather seats, a Bose premium sound system, and a large 12.3-inch touchscreen.

For 2023, the Rogue also offers a new 1.5-litre turbocharged variable compression engine with a very impressive output of 201 horsepower at 5,600 RPM and 225 lb-ft of torque at 2,800 to 4,000 RPM. This is an upgrade from the 181 horsepower and torque in the 2.5-litre engines. Nissan claims a fuel economy of 7.6 litres per 100 km combined for the 1.5-liter engine. The motor is paired to a continuously variable transmission (CVT) with wider ratios and less noise and vibration.

Standard on every Rogue is Nissan’s Safety Shield 360 suite that includes forward emergency braking with pedestrian detection, rear emergency braking, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning, and high beam assist. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity heated front seats, steering wheel, and exterior mirrors are also part of the mix. All versions get a seven-inch driver information screen and an eight-inch infotainment system. The premium package ($2,200) adds leatherette upholstery, rear window sunshades, and a power liftgate. We tested the top Platinum grade at $44,5738 (available only with AWD), which adds: Heated outboard rear seats and a wireless phone charging pad, 19-inch wheels and 10.8-inch display, and the head up display. Plus, more. There is also available rear sunshades, and a built-in Wi-Fi hotspot. A redesigned Divide and Hide cargo system is standard on the Premium. One of the highlights of the Nissan portfolio is the ProPILOT

Assist system, the semi- autonomous driving and cruise control system.

On the road, the increase in power was noticeable when taken on the highway. Acceleration was smooth and the engine provided the needed power when having to pass. Highway handling is also noticeably improved with a new Electric Power Steering system. It responded well to quick lane changes and the updated suspension design kept the Rogue firmly planted to the road. Nissan’s Vehicle Motion Control System predicts what the driver is trying to do and provide greater control in taking corners and lane changes. A central control

There are no real issues with Rogue, pricing is little higher than the competition, but the standard equipment levels and higher quality trim, finish, and materials more than make up for the still fairly reasonable base price. In summing up, the 2023 Nissan Rogue continues on its mission to provide one of the best compact SUVs in its class. The improved interior cabin, abundance of technology, safety. And great road manners make the Nissan standout. Highly recommended

The rear is spacious enough with adequate legroom. Cargo volume is 1,113L behind the rear seats – and total space with the rear seats folded is 2,098L.

wheel allows one to easily change between five driving modes: off-road, snow, standard, eco and sport.

2023 Nissan Rogue: Platinum AWD Model as tested: $46,566 including freight and PDE. More info at www.nissan.ca

Archway Calls for Resolution on Fraser Valley Transit Strike

Archway Community Services is calling for an urgent resolution to the Fraser Valley Transit Strike.

“The appointment of mediator Vince Ready on June 8th was welcome news, but we are concerned there haven’t been any updates since mediation began.” said Archway CEO, Rod Santiago. “We call on both parties to use this opportunity to negotiate a successful contract.”

“Reliable and affordable public transportation is critical for our

are adult learners falling asleep in their English classes because they’re so tired from working overtime to pay for the increased transportation costs.””

The Foundry Abbotsford youth health centre, run by Archway, has also seen a drop in the number of youth accessing mental and physical health services in-person.

community’s health and wellbeing. Three months is far too long to have this strike drag on and every day is further hurting transit users, including many of the most vulnerable in our community.

“Seniors, students, newcomers, those with disabilities and low-income families are among those that are hardest hit, with few alternatives that work for their budget.

“We’re hearing from seniors experiencing increased isolation and loneliness which has been significantly impacting their mental health and well-being. Clients aren’t able to pick up their food bank hampers or travel to work, which puts them even further behind.

“Youth and newcomers are having difficulty getting to school and there

“When youth, and others who rely on public transportation, are delaying medical care they’re being denied equal access to healthcare,” said Simone Maassen, Archway Manager of Youth & Health Services.

Archway staff are doing what they can to provide virtual services, delivery and rides to clients during the strike.

“Important services like public transportation need to be maintained and we ask the BC government to continue to have an active role in ensuring these negotiations are successful,” said Santiago.

growing region in our province, which is why we’re taking action in the Fraser Valley now,” said Pam Alexis, Minister of Agriculture and Food. “The 2021 atmospheric river was devastating and our farmers were extremely hard hit, so we’re helping them prepare for flooding risks while also supporting food security and ecosystem health for generations to come.”

The new $20-million Fraser Valley Flood Mitigation program, delivered by the Investment Agriculture Foundation of BC, will increase the province’s food security. The program will support flood resiliency on individual farms as well as larger, community-

the severe 2021 flooding,” said Brad Driediger, farm owner. “We believe that the measures outlined, such as improvements to farm-level infrastructure and community-scale floodmitigation projects will increase our farm’s resilience to future floods. This is not about our farm but strengthening this community and food security in British Columbia. We look forward to working together in building a more-resilient agricultural sector for our province.”

The funding will be used to develop community-scale projects that protect and restore local ecosystems and wetlands, such as culvert improvements, embankment stabilization and crop

diversification. The program will also support individual farms with projects, such as:

improving feed and fuel storage and protection;

erosion control;

the development of natural buffers;

raising the elevation of electrical, farm equipment or feeding stations; and

drainage or water infiltration systems. The program will also support community partnerships between Fraser Valley farming organizations, Indigenous and local governments, and non-profit organizations so there can be strengthened collaboration in preparing for and mitigating flooding risks. The program is part of the $200-million food-security announcement made in March 2023.

Governor General’s silver medal — Ravneet Sohal loved everything about

her kinesiology program

Ravneet Sohal of Abbotsford is excited about her future, but she’s also reveling in her recent past. Her experience in the UFV Bachelor of Kinesiology degree program was so positive that she will carry warm memories and valuable knowledge gained through her career journey.

Sohal is off to medical school at the University of BC Okanagan site in the fall. Her excellent grades helped gain her admission to med school, but also earned her the Governor General’s Silver Medal, awarded at UFV Convocation to the student with the top marks in a four-year degree program.

“I’m really honoured to be receiving this medal,” she notes. “I couldn’t have done it without the support of friends and family, and the excellent education I received at UFV. This university gave me access to lots of opportunities that I would not have had at a larger university.”

The UFV Kinesiology program is based at the Chilliwack campus and students end up being in many of the same classes together, creating a cohort-like atmosphere.

“I really enjoyed the content of my courses but also the professors — I had positive experiences with every single one of them,” she notes, citing

Amber Johnston and Carl Neinhuis as favourites. “I also really liked getting to know the other students so well. We were all together on the Chilliwack campus, and spent a lot of time together.”

At the end of her first year, the pandemic hit, and Sohal, like many other students, had to transition to online learning.

“That was very hard, especially for the kinesiology lab sessions,” she recalls.

Coming back to mostly in-person learning for her last two years was a relief, but also a bit of a shock.

“I was really excited about coming back but we also forgot how to interact and follow a set schedule and other things,” she recalls. “It was challenging but I re-learned how to balance time and prioritize better again.”

Sohal further developed her leadership skills by serving as a Kin Pal mentor, checking in on and guiding new students. She was also a Supported Learning Group leader, a paid position where students lead small group sessions to help first-year stu-

dents in courses that are extra challenging, academically.

Sohal really valued the networking opportunities that came with being in the Kinesiology program. Activities like career panels and research projects exposed her to career possibilities and valuable experience.

She worked with Dr. Gillian Hatfield on projects related to osteoarthritis and core muscles, taking measurements and performing tests on volunteers from the community.

“There was so much opportunity to share and learn beyond the course content and to apply in everyday life,” she notes. “It made my educational experience that much more valuable.”

She is also going to be a published academic soon. She will be cited as a second author on a paper evaluating

the reliability and validity of Youtube content focusing on childhood burns.

In addition to being a mentor, Sohal was informally mentored by a student a year ahead of her who also wanted to go to medical school and ended up being admitted. She is following in his footsteps a year later, after months of concentrated studying last summer to prepare for the MCAT, a test used by medical schools to assess applicants. Although she likes the idea of being a family physician, she’s not ruling out other specialties yet.

“I’m going into medical school with an open mind,” she says. “It’s hard to get experience in a clinical setting before medical school so I will find out more about the various specialties as I go along.”

Sohal is from Abbotsford and attended Dasmesh Punjabi school.

Do you know what your mortgage trigger rate is?

(NC) Interest rates have risen dramatically in the past year. When your mortgage has a variable interest rate with a fixed payment, you may reach a trigger rate when interest rates rise.

Your trigger rate is the interest rate at which your mortgage payment will no longer cover the principal and interest due for that period.

Once you've reached the trigger rate, your payment will only cover interest payments and no money will go towards paying down your principal amount. That means that you’ve stopped paying down your loan.

The best way to find out your trigger rate is to review your mortgage or loan agreement. You can also contact your bank. They’ll be able to calculate the exact rate for you. They’ll also be able to let you know your options if you reach it.

For example, your bank may offer to extend your amortization. This is the

time period over which the mortgage loan is reduced and eventually paid off by regular payments. Extending the amortization would avoid having to increase the amount of your recurring payments. However, extending your amortization means paying for a longer period of time and paying more interest in the long run. If you do look into mortgage relief options, it’s important to know what the impact will be for your entire mortgage.

If you’re worried about your mortgage, contact your bank to discuss your options. You could also seek advice from reliable and trusted sources to explore your financial options. Contact a financial professional, such as a licensed financial advisor or an accredited credit counsellor, to discuss a plan. Do your research to find a trustworthy organization and a qualified professional.

Lower Mainland farmers increasing environmental sustainability, food security

Farmers in Metro Vancouver and Abbotsford will have access to $1.5 million to implement practices that create benefits for food production and the environment.

The funding will support select programs, which are offered by the Delta Farmland and Wildlife Trust (DFWT), to improve soil health, sequester carbon, support biodiversity and enhance ecosystems.

The programs offered by the DFWT promote the sustainable use of agricultural land through the use of: cover crops after the summer harvest to improve soil quality and prevent winter erosion;

pollinator-friendly flowering plants and grasses in targeted areas to support biodiversity and improve important food crop pollination;

perennials in annual crop rotations to improve soil health and provide habitat for wildlife; and

permanent rows of bushes and plants along field borders to improve biodiversity and sequester carbon.

The DFWT is a non-profit organization that has promoted the preservation of farmland and wildlife habitat in the Fraser River estuary through cooperative land stewardship with local farmers for more than 30 years.

This $1.5 million is part of the Resilient Agricultural Landscapes Program and is funded through the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership, a five-year (2023-28) $3.5-billion investment by federal, provincial and territorial governments to strengthen competitiveness, innovation and resiliency of the agriculture, agrifood and agriculture-based products sector. This includes $1 billion in federal programs and activities, and $2.5 billion in costshared programs and activities that are funded 60% by the federal government and 40% by provincial and territorial governments.

Opposition leader blames premier’s policies for increased crime rates in BC

The official leader of the BC opposition, Kevin Falcon of the BC United, is laying the blame for the increased crime rates across the province and the Fraser Valley on Premier David Eby.

“I think it’s important to recognize that the person that has been responsible for crime over the last five and a half years was none other than David Eby, as the attorney general,” he said in an interview with CIVL.

“During that period of time, we have seen an explosion of repeat offenders released back into the communities often on the same day they’re arrested,” Falcon added.

Falcon comments on how Eby’s problem-solving consists of committees and hosting announcements, that one would be in four months after working with experts to address the catch-and-release program. Six months later, an announcement was made, and the answer was clear, the catch and

the release program wasn’t working. Falcon had some ideas on what he and the BC Liberals/United Party would do if he was in power.

“We’d give very clear directions to crown prosecutors across BC, that when they have a repeat offender in front of them, that’s been committing violent acts. The interest of public safety must always take priority over the interest of that individual to be released back into the public.” Falcon details. The second part of Falcon’s plan is his and the United Party’s proposed expansion to their mental health facility Red Fish in Riverview. The expansion would cost $1.5 billion over a proposed plan of three years as well as $100 million for homeless funding.

“There are 105 beds, we would triple it to over 300, and then we would set up regional mental health and addictions clinics for certain individuals who need special 24/7 care.”

As the OTT fever grips the audience owing to its accessibility, the actor spoke about the revolution it has brought. He said, “OTT is a great thing that has happened. It is giving work to a lot of good actors and the audience is getting to see the acting of some very good actors.” He further mentioned, “See, films and OTT are two different things altogether and they will always be different. I enjoy cinema and I enjoy OTT as well. If you enjoy your work and you are getting good work to do, I think one should not worry about where the

work is getting released.”

Talking about what made him to say yes to Asur for his OTT debut, he said, “I loved the story. Actually, I loved many things about it. When I heard the idea of the show, I enjoyed it so much because I knew this will surely work with the Indian Audience. I found it interesting and that made me to say yes to it.” Asur 2 is currently streaming on Jio Cinema.

On her upcoming film Man, directed by Igore, she said it is quite a responsibility doing a femalecentric film. “When I do female-centric films, I get to do more rounded characters, so I am just very happy about that. And the sense of responsibility is definitely higher than before. But I’m ready to take up the challenge.”

Kubbra opens up on The trial role

the shows: ‘Asur 2’ and ‘Badtameez Dil’ have her portraying two completely different characters. She said: “I crush on all my directors. I follow them like sheep. Oni was remarkable to work with for both seasons of ‘Asur 2’. I was in love with his mind. The whole show was beautiful teamwork. Even Gaurav Shukla, our writer, I call him our Desi Tarantino (sic).” Talking about the journey of ‘Asur’, she said: “When I was approached for the first season,

A ctress Kubbra Sait, best known for her role in the Netflix neo-noir crime thriller series Sacred Games, will be soon seen in the upcoming courtroom drama web series The Trial: Pyaar, Kanoon, Dhoka in the role of Sana, who she described as a headstrong person. Elaborating on the same, she said, “One thing that I realised while filming for this show

It was like a show had come my way and I had to decide if I had to do or not. Then I came to know Barun was a part of it, so I asked him. He told me to do it and so it was with his conviction I said Yes. For the second season, I knew I couldn’t wait to come back for it”.

Actress Tamannaah Bhatia who is known for her films like Himmatwala, Entertainment, Baahubali shares how she would never kiss onscreen but decided to do so for Lust Stories 2. Talking about her role in Lust Stories

2, the Babli Bouncer actress said, “I really wanted to work with Sujoy and I’m really happy that he thought of me for this part especially because I have done literally no intimacy in my career or very little intimacy in my career. I was that audience that would get awkward and I was that audience that was like ‘main ye kabhi nahi karungi, main kabhi nahi kiss karungi on screen (I will never do this, I will never kiss onscreen).’ I was that person, for me it was an evolution to get out of that framework.” She added, “India is vast and so many parts are yet to evolve. A lot of evolution has happened, but a lot more is left. I did not want this to sort of hold me back. It was purely for creativity. Not like I am trying to be famous after 18 years (in showbiz). Not my endeavor.” On the work front, Tamannaah will be seen in web show Jee Karda and Rajinikanth’s Jailer.

is how women who have a consistent need to be happy and only when they’re affable and sprightly, they are nice, but if they are rough on the edges and don’t sugarcoat things, only then they are tough.” For her Kubbra says,“ Sana is hardwired and strong willed, she has seen the worst already and she does things that require her to be twisted. It’s amazing to be able to play that.

That person is so not me, I thought that was an incredible change for me.” Along with Kubbra, the show also stars Padma Shri awardee Kajol as Noyonika Sengupta, along with actors Sheeba Chaddha, Jisshu Sengupta, Alyy Khan, and Gaurav Pandey in key roles. Taapsee opens up on camps in film industry

Actress Taapsee Pannu recently, talking about existence of camps in Hindi film industry, has shared that it isn’t something people don’t know about! A few months ago, Priyanka Chopra talked about those camps that often dictate casting. Now, Taapsee was asked about her opinion on camps in the industry, and while she refrained from nitpicking on someone else’s comments, she had a similar story to tell. Speaking to an entertainment portal, the Pink actress said, “Yes, Bollywood camps isn’t something that people don’t know about. It’s been there since forever. It can be basis an actor’s friend circle, a certain agency or group that they’re a part of and people’s loyalties differ based on that.” The Badla actress admitted that she was always aware that the industry is going to be biased and unfair, and that she refuses to let it make her a bitter person. “And if after all that, you still decide to be a part of this industry, then it’s your choice and you can’t complain about it later,” said Taapsee. Taapsee will be seen alongside Shahrukh Khan in Dunki.
